Iron Maiden - To Tame a Land Bass cover

- This is probably the most difficult bass line from the first 4 Maiden albums .... I really had to strengthen the little finger on my left hand for this one! Based on the sci-fi novel 'Dune' by Frank Herbert, 'To Tame a Land' has a definite Eastern feel to it, really summoning up a desert atmosphere.
The really tricky bit (at 4:06) is actually based on a classical guitar piece....something I only recently found out.....no wonder it is so difficult to play on bass! Check out "Asturias - Isaac Albeniz" played by Tal Hurwitz on youtube, and you will see what I mean.
Overall, To Tame a Land is an absolute masterpiece in my estimation, so I find it hard to believe it was only played on the World Piece Tour in 1983 and never played since. Mr Harris....have you never heard about the joy of playing 'deep cuts'?! Come on!!
Anyway, this completes my covers of the 1st four albums, so I am off to learn the Powerslave album next. I hope you enjoy my covers, sub, like, comment etc
UP THE IRONS!! \m/
One of the best Maiden songs, and you dug it.
Can't believe Frank Herbert hate Iron Maiden.
Congratulations !
+Baptiste Trumeau Well it's Herbert's loss in my opinion .... it would be great to most authors to have a huge band play homage to a piece of their work. 'Dune' would have been a great title if allowed! Thanks for watching mate :)
A highly overlooked masterpiece...well played.
This is the best cover of this song I've seen. A lot of people play it just a little wrong.. but you've found all the notes to play and the ones not to.. great job!
Thank you very much Marty ;)
Actually around 4:15 he plays a low E and not a B.
I love this song, it sounds so much like Rime of the Ancient Mariner from the next album Powerslave....Great Bass cover to my friend.......\\m//
Thank you mate. I guess it is more that Rime sounds like this though! The instrumental part in the middle has a similar feel. ;)
To Tame a Land and Where Eagles Dare - my 2 favs off of Piece of Mind. You effing nailed the bridge @4:05 on through til @5:00. Excellent as always!
Thank you very much mate :)
Great job, love the bass in this song!
Thank you very much. yeah this song should have been played live again at some point since 1983 for sure!
I does not get any better than this. That was incredible playing. I was able to breath when you hit the 6:13 mark thinking you just nailed this epic song. Really well done!
UP THE IRONS \,,/
+Constantine Isslamow Well parts of this song took some practice, that's for sure! Thank you very much Constantine :)
Awesome cover mate, I always liked this song and the bassline ofc :)
I can't wait for the Poweslave! \m/
+mario1997281 Thanks Mario ;) You will have to wait a little as I am only just deciphering 2 minutes to midnight, so some way to go there! ;)
That was perfect \m/
Probably the best song ever :)
And you did it justice .. love to play this, there's no "weak" part in this song - absolute masterpiece as you said!
Up the Irons!
+Demonsinger Cheers mate. Yeah I wish they dug this one out for the Early Days tour in 2005, but alas..... Thanks for watching again ;)
Spettacolare categorica bass cover ,favolosa song up the iron
Excellent,you nailed it dude.👌
One of the best Iron Maiden bass lines
Thanks for watching ;)
Prop to you bro .!!!! Hands down best performance of One of my favorite Maiden songs.
Sorry for the late reply, but thank you! :)
Inspired to take up bass watching this! Excellent!
Do it mate....you will never look back ;) Thanks for watching!
stunning job
Thank you very much! ;)
Great song, great sound, great cover!
Thank you mate :)
Perfect I been waiting for a good cover of this to show up!
+Sanitys Void Thank you very much mate :)
+J Huet - WelshPhantom After a study of your bass lines here I concluded I basically had it right (two notes wrong probably.) too but I was playing it lower on the fret board and using more open strings. It sounded right and at the same time a bit off. Now I know why. ;) The way you play it must be the way Harris plays it. I used to play along to this one back in the later 80's and early 90's.
+Sanitys Void Yeah I watched a bootleg dvd from the world Piece tour, and although not good enough quality to see Harris' fingers, I could see where his hand positions were, and worked it out from there :)
You're amazing ... great job
+Alexander Varejão Thank you very much! :)
Great playing!
Thank you very much :)
Solid work, as always :). I've never heard this song before, and thanks to you now I know one more Maiden's masterpiece ^^
Aside from the great play of yours, that stain(?) your little finger left after the intro was pretty disturbing for me ;).
+jarafPL If you have not heard this song before you really need to get "Piece of Mind" ... an excellent album overall. Re the 'stain', those mirror scratch plates just love sweat / grease etc....just look at Steve's bass during a gig! It wipes off just like any mirror though ;) Thanks for watching!
+J Huet - WelshPhantom Thanks for advice, I'll definetely get it :). For the 'stain' (is there a more accurate word for it? I'd love to know it.), I know it's inevitable, and it's not really a problem. I was just like 'I'll be watching his hands all the time, I'd like to learn this song one day... waait... there is something strange on that mirror thingy.'. And from then, I've spent 2 minutes or so, just staring at it :D
+jarafPL maybe 'smudge' or 'smear'....just finger mark would do :) You will enjoy Piece of Mind by the way ;)
+J Huet - WelshPhantom The more I know ^^. Already listened Piece of Mind on UA-cam, awesome album, I've really got goosebumps on some songs. Thanks for letting me know it ^^
+jarafPL Cool! ;)
Yeah, that's it 🤘
Thank you for watching mate :)
THE BEST SONG OF MAIDEN
At least very underrated. Thanks for watching :)
Flippin eck. Spot on.

+Phil Cat Thank you mate ;)

Thank you mate :) Here is a short video I did of the part you mean, played slowly. ua-cam.com/video/55-6lCtNMX4/v-deo.html Please be aware this is what I think Harris plays, but I could be wrong! Thanks for watching ;)
niiiiice!!
Thank you mate :)
😍😎😀😁👏👊😍😎
Just rewatched all of your videos (again) including Maiden and I've been wondering what's the progress you made with the Powerslave? Shall we expect a new cover soon? Cheers mate! :)
Hi Mario. Been really busy this year, so only on the 4th song so far (Flash of the Blade). I have got Aces, 2 mins and Losfre Words learnt pretty well though. Thanks for watching mate :)
Thanks for the notice! There are some great songs on this album which Maiden should play more often live. Saw them a month ago at Split, Croatia and they have only played Powerslave. But it was an awesome show anyways. Looking forward for your next video. :)
NOICE!
Thanks! :)
Complimentoni
Where are the new videos?
Hi mate :) Good question! Yeah, I should pull my finger out. I have just started learning the Powerslave album (got Aces High and 2 minutes to Midnight, on Losfer Words now), so hopefully some new vids soon :)
Easily the hardest Maiden track IMO
+Dedamn666 Yeah, the middle part is probably the hardest section from the 1st 4 albums. Thanks for watching mate ;)
Hey J Huet, can you help me out with this riff. I went and learned the riff wrong the one you are playing at 4:06 in the video. Because I learned it wrong it's even more difficult to re learn it right. Can you call me what I am doing wrong? I got the first part just not the turn around, I believe it's six notes with me getting probably about three of them wrong. See short video, ua-cam.com/video/69SLsl0y0Mo/v-deo.html
