I lived in Radstadt until the age of 10. Among ourselves, we kids spoke "Dialekt". With my parents and in school,it was "High" German. Then one day, I said something to my mother in "Dialekt"and she did not understand me. Years later I spent 5 days in Vienna and had no language problems. I am writing this because I never noticed these differences. In "Dialect" I said "hob", but in class I said "habe".
really with you do more of these I'm planning to move to upper austria and these would be very helpful since I don't want to sound like someone from Hamburg in austria
In 1979 when I was 20 I started to learn German having fallen in love with a Welserin whom I met at the University of London, Royal Holloway College. After two weeks touring West Germany including West Berlin, I crossed the border into Upper Austria. Wow, what a difference from standard German. Ever since then I have tried to maintain the ability to be “bilingual” in German, ie Kaiserdeutsch and Austrobayerisch. I also quickly learned dialect forms such as aufi for hinauf and aufa from herauf. Thank you for your video, please continue the excellent work. Viele Grüße aus dem Vereinigten Königreich.
I just realized that I picked up the Austrian pronunciation (or lack thereof XD) of the R without realizing (I live in Graz). I speak standard or almost hoch deutsch (German is my 3rd language) but I would never pronounce the R in Wirt, Bart oder Berlin.
I think the first tip is extremely helpful, but what I noticed most as an exchange student in Wien was the "ei" difference. It sounded more like a Southern US dialect, pronounced /a/. So "weit" was pronounced more like /waat/. I assume you do another video covering this, so I am going to look for it. Danke!
Wow, this is so cool that you are teaching this. I travel to Vienna about every 18 months or so because I love the architecture, vibe and cuisine. I remember some very basic German from a high school German course of one year which was many years before you were born, but it is not enough when I want to chat. And I realize now that even if I had continued my studies well in to university German, I would still not understand Viennese! Oh well.
Hello good afternoon how are you, could you help me with several phrases with their preposition and phonetics, at the time of pronunciation of Austrian German thank you I appreciate it.
That is very correct! R behind vowels is always vocalised in Standard German. It is not vocalised in some dialects only. But the quality of vocalisations is different throughout the dialects. I would say, Standard German is there very close to Eastern Middle German, but it differs in Austria as well as in Berlin (to give a second example). I would suggest in 'Wirt' for example, if it is /wiat/ in Austrian German, it would become a schwa-sound in Standard German [wıət].
Tyrolean (Austrian) German, much harder: Wirt does not become Wiat but Wirrtt Schmerz does not become Schmeaz but Schmearrzz Bart becomes to Bårrt or Bårrscht packen - påckkn
My grandmother was from Vienna but she rolled her R's, sort of like Italian. Is that more of an old-time thing? She only ever lived in Austria before she came to America in the 1930s so I don't know why should would have had that kind of an accent.
in Südtirol lots of dialects roll their Rs like that, maybe it works like that in Austria too? Like, many Rs are omitted just like he said, but my granny would also say things like "bin im Gorrrrrtn" (instead of "bin im Garten"/"bin im Goahtn", though I know south tyroleans who say Goarrrtn), and so on
Wow, that is fascinating! Thank you for the video. Is it hard for Austrians to speak Hoch Deutsch? I mean, how does it feel for an Austrian to speak like this?
Well, it depends a bit on the dialect you are speaking. For some it is hader and for others not so hard. And it depends on the educational background: if your teachers in school spoke standard german (Hochdeutsch) or made you speak like this, you are more familiar with it and will find it easier. If they spoke dialct, speaking standard german will feel more unnatural and forced.
And i guess it also depends on your attitude 😂. I'm from the vienna area, where speaking standard german has a positiv connotation and most people don't mind speaking it. But other austrians hate standard german (for whatever reason) and sometimes i feel like they would rather cut out their tounge than speak anything other than their own dialect.
@@Esther-jj8ee Because Hochdeutsch is not their language. Hochdeutsch isn't even the native tongue of Austria historically. The old king spoke a different Germanic language but the country transitioned to Hochdeutsch for international purposes.

good idea, do more !
Wow, I've been speaking Austrian German all along 😆👌🏼 mixed with dialect words from Hamburg. No wonder people think I'm odd. 😂
The fact you didnt color the state of vorarlberg on the austria map in the opening few seconds because our accent is so different 😭
nice content - thank you ! I will impress my Austrian boyfriend :) (I'm Piefke)
Strange. I would consider the R sound more harsh in Austria. Look at Falco Sounds. The R is so substantially vocalized.
Hello good afternoon how are you, could you help me with several phrases with their preposition and phonetics, at the time of pronunciation of Austrian German thank you I appreciate it.
Isn't the R in Standard German also vocalized? I learnt it that way while learning Hochdeutsch
