In addition to all the amazing things about the voice and the arrangement, I think it’s striking that the Disturbed band members went back to the 1960’s for this song and chose it because of the way it impacted them. Paul Simon is a poet, and the deceptively simple lyrics of this song, especially when combined with the music, need to be heard in every age. David Draiman said one of the other band members (I don’t recall which one) made the suggestion to choose this song, and he and the others quickly agreed that it was right for them. They intended their version to be a respectful homage, not a replacement. I have always loved the original, but I believe this version truly makes the powerful message of the lyrics come alive in a way the softness of the original did not. Great respect to David Draiman and the Disturbed musicians for choosing this song even though they knew it would be a shock to their fans and profoundly different from their usual work. And great respect to David Draiman for daring to make himself so vulnerable by putting his voice and emotions out there like this. Astonishing and inspiring.
This song was written about people’s inability to communicate not literally but to be able to emotionally connect with each other resulting in people who do not know how to love each other! The power in David’s performance just cements that were now in this moment, Simon and Garfunkel warned we was heading this way
I am a 67 yr old Grandmom and I could listen to this 100 times a day! I am going to a concert as soon as they can tour again with my granddaughter. David Draiman is an amazing man and vocalist. Their new song “Hold On to the Memories” is touching too!
I grew up with the original song and the difference between that and this cover is that I heard the words when I was young. With this version, I finally understand them.
I would have given you a thousand thumbs up for your reaction. The song MOVED you. It touched your heart. We are exactly where the song says we are. I hope you never forget the message.
This song touches your soul... it made me cry... it gave me chills and goosebumps everytime I hear it... his voice, the words, the Instrumentals... EPIC!!! Loved it!! It speaks to what is going on in the world right now!!!
This song, and the way David Draiman sings it, seems to perfectly capture the current pain and despair that many Americans are feeling right now as the silence from policy makers is deafening .
Your reaction is priceless! It confirms that other people "Feel" music like I do. David Draimen was classically trained to be a Cantor.....his voice is angelic and demonic at the same time. Beautiful rendition.
Absolutely love this live version just as much as the official video, maybe even a little more. The instrumental arrangement is stunning and adds so much. I don't hear any illness or imperfection in the vocal, I just hear emotion and power. Thanks, Hap!! I can't pass up listening every time it shows up on my youtube feed. Still gives me chills.
Still to this day, I get teared up when I listen to this version, specially if it's been a while since listening to it. I've never listened much to the lyrics of the original untill David Draiman and the rest of the Disturbed crew made this version. It HITs me like a TON OF BRICKS. Cor Blimey, HaP' Cor Blimey! ^^
Fun fact: Disturbed: Sound Of Silence(Live on Conan) was nominated on 59TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS (2016) for Best Rock Performance. That's how good this song is👍
I love this version because of the added instrumentals from the orchestra but you still can’t deny the power of the studio version and that amazing video.
Paul Simon heard this copy of their song he was so impressed he put it on his playlist on his phone and David had the flu when he did this and he nailed it
Absolutely Positively Love This Song and this version!! I just happened to tune into Conan the night Disturbed did this. I have been doing my best to spread the word about this ever since. I also really enjoyed your reaction.
Beautiful brother Mark of a good musician isn’t it, restraint exercised, respect for the words, the writer, the meaning. Live it & love it. Powerful Penetration
This was written by Paul Simon and recorded by Simon & Garfunkel in 1965; count back to that. It was a social commentary and warming, and now more pertinent than ever.
I dont know what warning is in this song. Ive tried looking it up. Paul Simon is quoted as saying that it is about the disconnect between humans and our inability to communicate with each other. How is that a warning? Its still relevant today because we still have technology that allows us to be hypnotized..
His band mates wanted to show case his vocals and thought this would be the perfect song to do that. They wanted him to do it with only a piano, but he wanted all his band mates to be involved.
He is a classically trained cantor with loads of natural talent!! This version is very visceral with his vocals and the orchestra touching your soul. Not to mention he had the flu and a fever and that’s why he was seated. It takes balls to sing right next to the timpani as well. Paul Simon heard this and told David “This song is yours “. No higher compliment in the music world. BTW, I cry every time I hear this 😢😢
You should listen to the Simon and Garfunkel original just for the contrast. They were amazing too in a totally different way. Super group from the 60s - another very political time. So great to see this great song be revived. Bridge over Troubled Waters is another awesome song of theirs.
I know it has been 2 years. I would like a DVD of the video of the studio version with the audio of the Conan Show version. MM WAAH! This version has been viewed over 100 million times(the most from any Conan Show), the audience gave a standing ovation for over 10 minutes, it was nominated for a Grammy, and the backstage people came out to see who was singing. I am 76, grew up with the Simon & Garfunkel version plus others; the Disturbed version is when I understood the song.
I believe this is the best version I’ve ever heard of this song. This man has a very low tones of voice but it all fit together as he performed the song. He also has the same song slightly different versionBut when I first heard this song I couldn’t believe the low tones and how he growls through all those long tones I’ve never heard anything like this,I was completely blown away and I would watch this song and listen to the song many more times in the future.Hap3 You are an awesome reactor thank you for doing this song
I was a Simon and Garfunkel fan when they first hit the scene and have listened to all their songs and many of their performances. I've watched the music video version of Disturbed doing this song. The very best is this live version done on the Conan show. In my opinion. And it's more relevant now than ever. Not only relevant but, it evokes a sense of immediacy, like, we fix things now or resign ourselves to dystopia.
It’s amazing how many people get a personal connection to this song. It reaches into your soul. You’re alive man. I understand he was sick and that auto tune was applied by Conan’s producers afterwards without Disturbed’s knowledge. Still, if if the song was sung less perfectly, you know he has the chops and the intensity is there. Watched tons of these reactions now and I now wonder, what could be the sequel to this song? Wouldn’t that be interesting!
My interpretation of the song The Sound of Silence. This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the perspective of the awakened. Hello, darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing something new in their vision. And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence." The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet. They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?
I watched Lots of reactions to this Song and I live the Fast that it connects totally different singers and instrumentalists and fans of different music styles. I am astonished especially by the fact that an emotional perspective is able to achieve the same goal like the scientific one. Connective as Dr. Dre, Ice-T and Cube, Smetana, Jessie J, Loreena McKennitt and B.B. King for me.
It’s an excellent performance but it’s normally expected from David 😊He did it more than good considering he was sick. I’m always changing between listening to this and official video.
good morning just woke up and music first before take my coffee and ready going to work have a nice morning his voice was so fabulous i love to hear wow very cool enjoying your reaction too thank you guy have a bless Monday all... 🍞🍎🍌🥯🥐
💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖 everything about this,it's hard to believe David draiman was real sick when performing this,as it's just amazeballs 💖👍🎶🔥 he can sing anything & one of my favorite singers,he's freakin brilliant 🔥🎸🎶🔥🎸🎶🔥🎸🎶
I am unsure why so many people are saying the original is a warning and the disturbed version is the consequence or something. Its the same exact lyrics, just sung differenly. Paul Simon himself said the song is basically about the disconnect between humans and our inability to communicate with each other. And its still true to this day, which is why the song was chosen by Disturbed. There isn't even a hint of a "warning" in the lyrics. I think it started off as some person trying to make some sort of philosophical or prolific statement to give a little more umph to the performance while trying to sound like an intellectual lol.
Hey love i love your reaction. For me this version was my radiation cancer song 😢 I was in a dark room with stabs of neon light 43 times😢 Love your reaction always 🥰
Hello Mate! After seeing your reaction to SRV's song and admonition to lift each other up, I knew that your reaction on this performance would be special. You are a special person and thank you for sharing your thoughts and insight with us. If you get a chance, please do a reaction on Disturbed' s song "The Light". Again, thank you!
Oh my gosh, it's a good thing you shaved your Stach off or I would have though I was looking at Freddie! Lol. Take care, like your studio. Haven't heard this song for years and I like this version.
Heard he wasn't very happy after he found out auto tune was used, not by him but the show he was on before releasing it.(to me he brought a dark tone to the song which I prefer to the original great reaction as always 💯👌👍
David has none more with, “ The sound of silence “ to reach all kinds of cultures, then he could ever reach as a Cantor in a Synagogue. - Joe Redfeather -
You really need to check out and react to Jason Mraz and Daryl Hall singing Jason's song I WON'T GIVE UP. It was performed at Daryls studio, as part of his ongoing collaboration series with other artists from different musical genres. Epic
Hap, if he was sick, wonder what he sounds like well!? :) I think David is an AMAZING singer...WOW he made the song..love the music & drums~~oh and so are you, AMAZING and how you do reactions... you're the best!!
I know this isn't the meaning of the song. But I have a interpretation It's biblical If you're familiar with the movie Moses . First version is about passing the word around about God 2 version is about Moses walking alone passing the word of God. And his vision is to get people loving one another. 3rd version The ten thousand people are his followers 4 version is about when I Moses goes and tell the Pharo about there only Is one God And the silence is where the Pharo orders people not to mention God any more And the last version is about when Moses was told to leave his city . And his followers left with him Is about Moses going up the mountain leaving his followers alone and abandoned And that's when God wrote the Ten Commandments Than when Moses comes back carrying the words of God . Only to see that everyone was living in sin Worshipping to there golden God . Then Moses thru the Words of God and now they are written on subway walls And that's the people saying God his coming That's the way I see it Hope I didn't offend anyone Great Reaction Stay Safe
Agree ! To me it is !!! And the people bowed and pray to the neon God they made ( the golden calf !! Falls god ) Moses saw !! The anger part !!! We know there were 600,000 people !! 10,000 people maybe more
Your eyes and facial expressions relay the emotions you felt as well as the surprise you experienced!! This is a powerful cover of this song written in 1965!! "Disturbed" has never done a song like this before as they are a Hard Rock/Metal group!! This is my favorite song recorded in the past 5 years!! Wondrous and remarkably... this is so far removed from their typical music that anyone (EVERYONE?) is taken aback and or blown away!! Not until this was released (12/2015) did anyone feel these lyrics so intensely!! This is way more dominant and dynamic than the 1965 original; not necessarily better!! This song can and SHOULD be listened to by anyone who likes music; all genre listeners should experience this song!! IMO, 2 more magical songs, check out Heart paying tribute to Led Zeppelin (2012) in front of the boyz!! -Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -David Draiman: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right." - How Paul Simon Felt To Have Disturbed Transform Classic Song to Heavy Metal ua-cam.com/video/ntNfwoKD0XA/v-deo.html
@@xelahooper2176 - they are not mainstream. It's not about who's the best. For them is good enough to be nominated, because like this they can sell more.
Yes when he did this song he had the flu... he was very weak and that’s why they had him sitting for the song.. the day before he spent in bed he was so weak...
When I first heard this version of the song I didn't like it. I thought it was too different from the original, too much angst. Then I began to understand it and to realize that the difference was what made it great. It has a power that the original didn't have and relates more to the world today. Thanks for your reaction. I have another suggestion for you. Do you remember Eric Burdon and The Animals? Burdon grew up hard in Newcastle. I don't know if the other band members were northern boys. They were part of the "British Invasion" of the US after The Beatles, and their version of House of the Rising was a big chart-topper. Would you like to react to it? ua-cam.com/video/0Fy7opKu46c/v-deo.html
THE QUESTION YOU ASKED FOR THOUGHT. " ARE WE IN A BETTER SPACE FOR MUSIC? ARE WE IN A BETTER PLACE FOR MUSIC? WHICH I CONSIDER PERSONALLY ONE IF NOT THE HIGHEST FORM OF COMUNICATION. WE SHOULD AND COULD BE AT A ULTIMATE HIGH. WE HAVE ALL THE TOOLS IN THIS DAY AND AGE. ie, INTERNET, KNOWLEDGE. WE ARE LIVING BEINGS THAT CAN SPEAK HEAR, AND MINDS TO THINK BUT ARE WE REALLY USING ALL THIS TALENT THAT WE POSSESS INDIVIDUALLY? PROPERLY? WE SHOULD ALL TAKE THE TIME AND SERIOUSLY LOOK AT THE THINGS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF US. WE COULD MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.
I agree that at this time we have so very much technology at our disposal, so much possibility to reach massive numbers of people with our song/message/story/what-have-you that we should seemingly be able to change the world through this communication with the masses ... yet that doesn't happen. Instead we have become so saturated with everything ... including great music ... that we end up not absorbing even a fraction of what we hear. We block much of it out maybe as a form of self protection from sensory overload ... ? Perhaps? Who really knows. In times before all this techno overload we deal with today, when we had to rely on foot born communications that might take weeks ... even months to recieve we gleaned every possible meaning from each and every communication whether it was a spoken story or song or memorized message (Yes there really was a time when we relied on our brains like we do computers today!). I dont think we are improving in our actual communicating with one another. Instead we become more and more dysfunctional. Music does have the power to bring us together, but I think in most cases we still only hear the surface sweet rhythms and vocals that first attract us. It often takes effort to understand the message in the lyrics ... if there is one and most listeners just don't bother.
When you listen to it think about the God of technology we talk without speaking we we hear without listening. S and G's version made you think, Disturb's made you feel!!
This man CAN SING!!! ....from baritone to tenor, from clear as a bell to rasp on A DIME!! Beautiful full, velvety voice!! Kudos David!!!

Thanks!
It tears me up every time I hear it. His shout out to us that we wasted our darned time and that we need to start listening to each other.
The power of music if done correctly.

Yes he was sick so that shows what a superb voice he has!
Paul Simon created the message in the 60's when he wrote it, Disturbed delivered it superbly
Paul Simon heard this copy of their song he was so impressed he put it on his playlist on his phone and David had the flu when he did this and he nailed it

David Draiman's voice is AWESOME!! Control is AMAZING!! Best ever!!
I feel it all... lyrics, music and the meaning
Like a religious experience for me....moves me to my very soul!

My interpretation of the song The Sound of Silence.
This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing
it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very
long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective
of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the
perspective of the awakened.
Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in
the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing
something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted
the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone
under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the
dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in
the armor of dark, a tear in the matrix, if you will and in that moment they
saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds
(awakened Ones) telling
those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy
those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle
way,
but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of
being attacked
by those that controlled the sound of silence.
They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not
to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became
aware of theLight/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time,
it really pissed them off.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them
Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead
remained in the sound of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."
The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the
things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet.
They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by
consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through
their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the
people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship
sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?
Loved the original, Disturbed now own this song
Disturbed es genial y David tiene una súper voz, ellos tienen un gran corazón, te sugiero que indagues sobre ellos, saludos desde Uruguay 🇺🇾
King for me.
live=love and fast=fact
You teared because you felt the loss.
For me, his voice goes from deep velvet, to satin, to silk, and then WHAM! Burlap. Love, love, love this.
I know this vid is older but, just came across it and I love watching you listening to it.
I think I've listened to this a hundred times....there is nothing more to say...
Yeah I feel this one real deep... POWERFUL message
Nicely done young man!
Great job on your video. You didn't talk over or keep stopping it and we can see it hit you.
Hey love i love your reaction. For me this version was my radiation cancer song 😢 I was in a dark room with stabs of neon light 43 times😢
Love your reaction always 🥰
❤️ amazing reaction
I learned this song in forth grade and it’s about the Vietnam war. My parents weren’t happy with my teacher
My favorite song of all time...Disturbeds version!!
Hello Mate! After seeing your reaction to SRV's song and admonition to lift each other up, I knew that your reaction on this performance would be special. You are a special person and thank you for sharing your thoughts and insight with us. If you get a chance, please do a reaction on Disturbed' s song "The Light". Again, thank you!
Added! and that reaction is soon to come. Thank you.

This is Disturbed's "Flu Game"!
Oh my gosh, it's a good thing you shaved your Stach off or I would have though I was looking at Freddie! Lol. Take care, like your studio. Haven't heard this song for years and I like this version.
Listen every day I love
Heard he wasn't very happy after he found out auto tune was used, not by him but the show he was on before releasing it.(to me he brought a dark tone to the song which I prefer to the original great reaction as always 💯👌👍
David has none more with, “ The sound of silence “ to reach all kinds of cultures, then he could ever reach as a Cantor in a Synagogue.

Best song ever! Disturbed is awesome.
Powerful message for these days
You really need to check out and react to Jason Mraz and Daryl Hall singing Jason's song I WON'T GIVE UP. It was performed at Daryls studio, as part of his ongoing collaboration series with other artists from different musical genres. Epic
Hap, if he was sick, wonder what he sounds like well!? :) I think David is an AMAZING
singer...WOW he made the song..love the music & drums~~oh and so are you, AMAZING and how you do reactions...
you're the best!!
I know this isn't the meaning of the song.
But I have a interpretation
It's biblical
If you're familiar with the movie Moses .
First version is about passing the word around about God
2 version is about Moses walking alone passing the word of God.
And his vision is to get people loving one another.
3rd version The ten thousand people are his followers
4 version is about when I Moses goes and tell the Pharo about there only Is one God
And the silence is where the Pharo orders people not to mention God any more
And the last version is about when Moses was told to leave his city .
And his followers left with him
Is about Moses going up the mountain leaving his followers alone and abandoned
And that's when God wrote the Ten Commandments
Than when Moses comes back carrying the words of God .
Only to see that everyone was living in sin
Worshipping to there golden God .
Then Moses thru the Words of God and now they are written on subway walls
And that's the people saying God his coming
That's the way I see it
Hope I didn't offend anyone
Great Reaction Stay Safe
I agree I see it as God talking to us and giving us a warning when it’s time to pay attention to his calling to us as it says in second Chronicles
Agree ! To me it is !!! And the people bowed and pray to the neon God they made ( the golden calf !! Falls god ) Moses saw !! The anger part !!! We know there were 600,000 people !! 10,000 people maybe more

Pierces through your soul! 💜💘 💯
The stars just aligned that night and everything went right."

Just nominated? How did they not win? And what beat this that year?
@@xelahooper2176 - they are not mainstream. It's not about who's the best. For them is good enough to be nominated, because like this they can sell more.
AMAZING DAVID. ILOVE BRASIL.
Yes when he did this song he had the flu... he was very weak and that’s why they had him sitting for the song.. the day before he spent in bed he was so weak...
I put him up there with Bobby hatfield, my two favorites ever!!!!!

DAVID IS BEAUTIFUL I LOVE DISTURBE
As you know this was done in the 60’s & what was happening (race riots/marches) 2020 what’s happening same thing.
When you listen to it think about the God of technology we talk without speaking we we hear without listening. S and G's version made you think, Disturb's made you feel!!
I am posting this on January 20, 2021 and the lesson was not learned. We are doomed as a free society even though we were warned.
