    I have the z flip 3. Several cases have adhesive. I outright refused to use the adhesive strips. There is just too much potential to damage a decice. So glad you made a video addressing this issue.

      Thanks for commenting!
      So in a vacuum, by itself, the adhesive doesn't pose any risk to the aluminum the frame of of phone is made from. The real risk is if any of the adhesive strips lines up with the mmW 5G antenna cover, which is also present on the Z Flip 3, then damage can be done on removal.
      The adhesive does serve an important purpose of anchoring the case in place to prevent scratches from fine dust particles due to minute movements and shifting of the case on the phone. The easiest way to safely avoid the antenna cover problem while also utilizing the adhesive is to simply check the location of all the adhesive strips in relation to the antenna cover first. If there's a strip that would sit right on top of it, remove that strip from the case. You can leave all the others in place. Then install the case as you would normally. It should now give you no problems!

    Thank you for the warning. It’s a shame the Samsung design engineers didn’t think about how to anchor cases without adhesive. All it would have needed is some small detents in the frame.

    Hey mate, I'm not in the US I'm in Australia but up until early this year I worked for Samsung in the mobile servicing department. Given Ive not seen or handled the Fold 3 but I did on the Fold 1 and 2 plus the normal Note and S series devices with the IP ratings. I'm pretty confident that your concerns are warranted regarding liquid ingress into the device. The issue you'll (possibly) have is that they'll most likely class it as physical damage. With the Fold devices due to the way they're manufactured, I'm pretty sure they'll require the entire frame to be replaced. Using an example, if say you drop your phone and you dent in your volume or power button...due to the way the LCD module is manufactured, they can't replace just the buttons. The entire screen would need to be replaced entirely. That would apply to the Fold 3 presumably. The bitch with the Folds is that the inner display is also a part of the frame and comes as one part pre installed. So, definitely contact Samsung in your area just for confirmation. I'm not sure how strict they are in the US regarding warranty, but here in AUS it's very black and white. Perhaps since it's so new they might be nice, but prepare yourself for the possibility of having a largeish payout get it sorted.

They may be cheaper than Samsung if an out of pocket cost is required but they usually aren't authorized and sometimes don't use genuine parts or have the correct machines needed to repair the phones properly. A lot of people go there to save time/money but the phone usually ends up costing more as it breaks or has issues. If Samsung confirm this during inspection it's not covered under warranty

      @@benphillips9973 I work at a ubreakifix in the US and we're partnered with Samsung to do their repairs with genuine parts. I can absolutely say water damage is is considered physical damage and is not covered under the warranty and it is a hefty chunk of change for a display repair, like $550+ for the inner display. You are also correct that the buttons would require a full frame replacement and the inner display is attached so it's that same $550+ price to replace the frame or hinge!

    Good to know as I am a fan of spigens slim cheap cases. I usually take my cases off once in awhile to clean around the edges where it meets the phone and retty much every time I find a little bit of dust/dirt on back/sides between case and phone as well. Not much on good cases but enough that you keep in mind to clean it once in awhile to prevent the debris from causing damage.

    @xile6 3 роки тому +1

    kinda of like duh. I i guess a ton of people dont think. Im using the official silicon one. It only has a small adhesive on the front screen on the left side. Works fine.
    I would never use a case that uses that much adhesive and really not one thats on the sides of the phone.
    But also you can use a drop of IPA (rubbing alcohol). This i will loosen/ dissolve the glue

    • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  3 роки тому

      Well yeah, I definitely hope we see more cases come out that can stay in place without adhesive and still avoid sliding around.
      As for your suggestion about isopropyl alcohol, normally that would be a great idea and actually for almost every other spot where there's adhesive on the case, a small drop can help.
      But when it comes to the sensitive antenna cover area, there is a high risk of the alcohol seeping underneath the antenna cover and causing its own adhesive to weaken, which would only increase the risk of damage during removal of the case.
      Thanks for watching!

  • @preciouspearl487
    @preciouspearl487 2 роки тому

    yea.. putting adhesive on a $1800 phone, limiting ability to remove the case at leisure, never resonated with me -- therefore, skipped on that option.. I also heard about how some cases (particularly the cheap cases) left markings on the zfold... Based on that, I decided (at least for now) to stick with the Samsung case pen case (mentioned not to leave damage), and will try using both an elastic band to keep from flapping when not in use and a wireless charger friendly ceramic Finger ring holder kickstand...

    • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  3 роки тому

      Normally, this would be a pretty good suggestion for helping adhesive come off, but in this case, it's not a good idea since the alcohol can also seep in behind the antenna cover and weaken the adhesive holding it down as well.
      Hopefully that makes sense! Thanks for watching!

    I've used the Spigen Slim Armor Pro on my ZF2 and now my ZF3. I've had the Spigen Tough Armor too. Never had this problem taking the cases off intact. Never damaged my phone.
    It would be nice if Samsung made a "Tough" or "Rugged" version of the Fold. Models years ago that were popular, would have one of these versions for people who were rough on their phones.
    We almost never carry our phones around without a case. You'd think that Samsung would pay attention.

    • @roberto69420
      @roberto69420 2 роки тому

      Never mind. The glue tape was not distributed but on one side on the edge and I just smoothed the glue over with my finger nail, stuck the cover back in the slot. I pressed on it for a bit and after an hour accidentally drop it in my kitchen sink and it appears to still be waterproof. So yeah that worked kinda. • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  2 роки тому

      That's essentially the exact solution I provided at the end of the video for those that had not yet installed such an adhesive-based case on their phone. For those that have already caused significant damage though, that wont' work.
      The only good thing is, after speaking with several people who have been in direct contact with samsung it appears that the external cover isn't critical for waterproofing so even if it falls off completely, other than being a cosmetic blemish, it shouldn't have any affect on the IP rating.

      In my case since I did partially damage the adhesive of the antenna cover, in addition to leaving the adhesive and backer in place, I also put several layers of folded thin card stock between the case and the side of my phone to apply enough pressure to keep the antenna cover from lifting.

      But between the sliding hinge protection constantly hanging up upon opening requiring a concerted effort to open without binding, to the oversized lip on the front, making swiping everywhere but from the top, almost impossible, I realized I made the wrong choice.

      @@252ICEMAN The issue isn't always noticeable sliding, without adhesive, the micro-movements of the case can cause scratching as dust and grit accumulate in-between the case and the phone. Nothing wrong with running without adhesive but just make sure remove the case from time to time, and clean it out and give your phone a wipe down.

    I did a fair bit of research before deciding on a case for my Fold 3. Each to their own, but I was really not keen on using a case that require adhesives. At the end, I've only found 3 cases that doesn't use adhesives.
    - Speck Presidio
    - Otterbox Symmetry Series
    - Foddom Dootoo
    I don't know much about the Dootoo case, but I'm quite keen to give that a try. From reading about the Otterbox case, it seems like it would benefit from adhesives, because it slides around. The Speck case however is actually connected at the top and bottom so it's 1 piece, and afaik, no other cases use this design. This means it shouldn't slide around, and doesn't require the need for adhesives. This is why I settled for the Speck case.
    Perhaps this is an alternative for those who, like me, would prefer not to use adhesives at all...
    Appreciate the PSA though :-)

    I only ever use double sided for the front screen and at the front face like you have said, it also important to test the cases first some time the moulding tolerance effect the screen protector sometimes when fitted. So use a box cutter to scrap/remove some plastic material from the inside. And test before fitting. These cases don't allow for the antenna.

    Greetings

    • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  3 роки тому +1

      Hey man, no problem!
      So the issue is that the US version of the phone and the version sold in certain other markets, has a plastic cover over a cutout in the top right of the frame of the phone. Most cases that use adhesive to attach themselves to the phone, have adhesive on this spot. When the case is removed, it can damage this cover, usually pulling it off.
      To avoid damage you should make sure to remove the adhesive in this area before you install a case. If you've already installed a case, using a different technique to remove it, is necessary.

  • @crescentfade
    @crescentfade 3 роки тому +1

    Turn the device off and apply directed heat (blow dryer) to the corners of the case. Far less struggle.

    • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  3 роки тому +2

      That's a good tip! For most of the case that should be just fine. However, with the antenna cover region, it isn't a great idea as the heat will not only soften the case adhesive but the adhesive that holds the antenna cover in place as well.

  • @tomlee45
    @tomlee45 3 роки тому

    Why don't you not put the adhesive where the antenna is and rather just apply it everywhere else? Wouldn't that solve the antenna issue ?

    • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  3 роки тому

      That is exactly the solution I give in the "So you're thinking about installing a case with adhesive" section of the video. Thing is, people need to be aware of this problem first before they put a case on their phone or the stage is already set for damage to be done when they go to remove it.
      For example, I didn't know about this, myself, until I made the discovery when I damaged my phone during a case removal.

    • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  3 роки тому +1

      Hey, congrats on getting the Fold! So you actually don't need to worry about trying to find a non-adhesive case. The key is just making sure that you don't use the adhesive on the part of the case thats right over the antenna cover.
      You can either do this by simply not removing the adhesive backer that covers it, or you can just peel off the entire adhesive strip that's on that section of the case.
      Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
