What is your favorite Stones album? Mine so far... Beggar's, I Guess? I don't know. That's rough. There are so many damn good albums LOL including this one! Crazy.
Sticky Fingers (then Exile, then Some Girls) but I do love a ton of the songs from the Brian Jones era of the band. The US compilation album Flowers is maybe my most played Stones record.
Yesss! Monkey Man finally! I remember my dad laying between his enormous speakers with Monkey Man cranked all the way up. It was his favorite song by them. Awesome choice, and reaction Lee, thanks for this.
Keith plays all the guitars on Let It Bleed and Monkey Man! He played all guitars on the album except an acoustic slide guitar overdub by Taylor on Country Honk and some rhythm guitar on Live With Me. Keith played all the slide guitar on the album too. The album was about complete when Taylor joined. Recording started in 68 and finished late 69
Both brilliant tunes, this is probably my fave Stones album. Yep, you got the blues Stones thing right. They were basically a London based blues cover band before Mick and Keith locked them in the kitchen and told them they weren't coming out until they'd written their own track. They came out with 'The Last Time' and the rest is history.
First time I heard “Let It Bleed” was Halloween 1981 when The Stones played it at the Cotton Bowl. I was 16. Jimmie Vaughan’s Fabulous Thunderbirds and ZZ TOP opened. I’ve always loved “Monkey Man”. Can you imagine this song, “Angie”, “Sympathy For The Devil”, “She’s a Rainbow”, or “Waiting On a Friend” without Nicky Hopkins?
Monkey Man is such a great song. It always reminds me of a friend who is no longer with us. He loved this song & we were camping back in the day, trippin' our brains out & Monkey Man came on & he was just into so much, singing & dancing to it. It's a really great memory that Monkey Man always brings back. So thank you Lee & Kathy
That opening vibraphone on "Monkey Man" just slays. Not a trifle too Satanic. This is the last album with Brian. The cover shows we used to stack albums to play, one after the other.
@laurencaulton103 yup. No internet back then and 3 TV networks meant for young people in the late 60's and early 70's rock n roll was incredibly meaningful to many of us.
Saw Steel Wheels tour in '89. When they played Monkey Man, the stage was dark during the intro and they had these colored lights that synced up with those vibraphone/piano phrases. Unforgettable. Awesome song and great show.
Monkey Man live when Lisa Fischer was with them is mind blowing. Mick and Lisa, together is magic. Thanks, Lee! Both of these are so good from what I think is my favorite Stones album. There's so many ❤
One of my all time favorite albums, bought it right after it came out. Even my dad liked a song or two from it, which doesn't surprise me because I just about wore it out. And my dad would've been a hundred years old next year. He mostly loved his big band and country music. I've learned to love All kinda music from hearing ALL kinds music.
I always had a soft spot in my heart for pianist Ian Stewart, who was the second member of the Stones after Brian Jones. Ian was kicked out of the band by Oldham in mid-1963, but stayed with them as road manager and a side musician until his death in 1985.
I love watching you get into my fav music. Brian Jones was an amazing musician. He could play anything! ❤ I love all of the early Stones albums. My nickname was Stones in HS lol
Thanks Kathy G for such a great pick. I have always loved everything about this, vocals instruments, well the whole package. Rock on. Both songs brightened my day. Blessings all. Peace
My all time favorite Stones album. Used to listen to this thing on acid waaaaaay back in the day. So many killer tracks. BTW- the studio version of Midnight rambler is on this LP & it is totally KILLER!!! U should check it out. I know u did the live version, but trust me dude, this version is insane cool. Anyway-….. peace my brother 🎸🎸🎸🎹🎹🎹🥁🥁🥁👊✌️😎
Keith played all of the electric guitars on these songs and most of the songs on the album. Mick Taylor had just joined, and he only appeared on Country Honk and Live with Me (highly recommend especially with Keith on bass). Taylor would become a driving force on their next album Sticky Fingers. You want a great Taylor solo, try Sway on Sticky Fingers.
Monkey Man is one of my favorite rock songs of all time. It's almost cinematic. I sometimes imagine that opening instrumental intro being used in an animated sci-fi movie like Heavy Metal as a bunch of spaceships start an attack run on a planet. Well, that's my head canon. Great song!
Another excellent & thoughtful reaction Lee. FYI, Keith played all the gtr parts on both Let It Bleed & Monkey Man, and most of the rest of the l.p. as well. Mick Taylor "only" appeared on Country Honk, Live With Me, and also the Honky Tonk Women hit single which, btw, was mostly his arrangement.
Lee -- one of my most triumphant Phish moments was when out of nowhere they busted out Monkey Man to close Set 1. The first little piano roll over that bassline sent a wave of sonic energy through a crowd of over 50,000 fully switched on, fully tuned in phans. SuperBall Festival, Watkins Glen NY July 2011. Only performance ever.
Monkey Man is so awesome. But then, this album is the epitome of the Stones! Great high school memories! And hey, digging the Floyd DSOTM t-shirt you’re rocking.😊
#1) "Sticky Fingers", Great blues guitar with Mick T and Keith, a haunting druggy-spooky feel to the final songs, but Album ends on high final note. #2) "Goat's Head Soup", Most people don't rate this one high enough. I just love the spooky-blues mood of this Album. #3) "Get Yer Ya Yas Out", One of the best LIVE albums ever. The "Sympathy" and "Rambler" are the best Stones recordings ever. #4 "Let It Bleed", as demonstrated right now, just an awesome album. Agree, love that instrumental on "Monkey Man".
Goats Head Soup is excellent, The Stones go R&B and Funk. It's Only Rock N Roll album is great as well, The Stones start exploring Protopunk and there's a great mix of songs. I believe the song "If You Really Want to be My Friend" was written by Taylor about the band, Richards specifically. "Time Waits for No One" is one of Taylor's greatest performances. That album is the one that made Taylor leave The Stones because he wasn't given writing credits among many other reasons.
If your looking for other "pretty" Stones songs, here are some suggestions 1. Back Street Girl (1967) 2. Moonlight Mile (1971) 3. Winter (1973) 4. She's a Rainbow (1967) 5. Let it Loose (1972)
My then boyfriend introduced it to me and I was hooked ever since. He gave me his album when he decided he preferred the Dead. This was 81 and think his was original from the original release. Still have it. One of my prized possessions.
Nicky Hopkins’ slightly spooky piano riffs at beginning set the perfect tone for the whole song. Just saw a documentary on Nicky where they discuss this. “Monkey Man” “Everybody’s got something to hide except me and Monkey” - both clearly drug user slang of the day.
Sweet! "Monkey Man" is the underrated masterpiece from Let It Bleed. The delicate piano starting off the song on the studio version disguises so much of what follows lyrically. Then a tambourine sets up the rhythm for the drums to carry along while slashing guitar chords begin to tear the clothes off the impending celebration of debauchery. The drum pattern leading into the interlude after the second chorus lands really hard and quite funky. Charlie Watts, RIP! Haunting, edgy, and funky, with an instrumental passage that pointed the way for the second half of Derek & The Dominos "Layla" to walk a year or so later. And while not a cover of this song, also check out "Monkey Man" by Toots & The Maytals from 1969 or the 1979 cover version by The Specials. Same title, different song, super fun either way.
I don't see anything from Exile, which is a shame but hopefully soon remedied. There are so many tracks that are transcendent. My personal favorite is "Let It Loose", Mick at his most bluesy and soulful and a group of backup singers I want to go polygamist with. So many other songs that would top the charts of best Stones songs including, "Sweet Virginia" and "Lovin Cup". I could go on to include the entire two disc album but I'm sure others will fill you in.
'I was bitten by a boar, I was gouged, and I was gored, but I pulled on through.' That's the Rolling Stones - survivors from the 1960s to 2025. I can't imagine how much will and perseverance it takes, and I'm 78 years old.
“I was dreamin’ about this steal guitar engagement when you jumped my head and feed it jasmine tea. She knifed me in my dirty , filthy basement with That jaded , faded junkiness. What pleasant company.” Such a poetic way to describe S&M. Pure gold here.
I remember listening to this song as a 14 year old I think we were with my best friend in the back bedroom at my parent’s house. We had it turned up all the way like we did during that phase. And I remember us just screaming “I’m MF monkey!”. I have no idea what my poor mother was thinking. 😬 When I get a little too grouchy Grandma Waspy, I have to remember these moments when we were just..out there.
Yes, he only plays on “Live with Me” and “Country Honk,” but many dispute whether or not he's actually on the latter track. Let It Bleed is a Keef album. He's on top of his game and was rarely better.
“I was dreamin’ about this steal guitar engagement when you jumped my head and feed it jasmine tea. She knifed me in my dirty , filthy basement with That jaded , faded junkie nurse. What pleasant company.” Such a poetic way to describe S&M. Pure gold here.
I've been married for what will be 34 years in April. Monkey Man was me and my wifes first dance at the reception. As you may imagine, when the Bride and Grooms first dance is Monkey Man the odds are its gonna be a pretty good party
Got Live If You Want It - 1966 was a great album. Not the greatest production because of technology of the time, but a great collection of their mid 60’s work.
Great technology was certainly available at the time, but not used very much at all on rock music. I have classical music from the mid- late fifties that is jaw dropping, and equal to anything afterward. But the effort, top recording engineers, and best microphones and mixers were not used in Rock until later. And even then, not used throughout the genre. Then, the loudness wars arrived in the late 80’s and got worse and worse through the 90’s and beyond so today, some recordings are so compressed and clipped into distortion, they are worse than mid 60’s recordings, but not for the same reasons.
Got Live If You Want It was my first album purchase. "The Last Time" has always been a favorite song for me. I think The Who "Live at Leeds" was the second album I bought. Strange that my first two albums were live?
Love monkey man..early stones albums do it for me…12x5 ,Rolling Stones now, decembers children, beggars banquet..you’ll find great songs on these albums…yeahhh…couple of instrumentals…2120 s Michigan ave and now I’ve got a witness..and of course prodigal son..yes indeedy…and salt of the earth

What is your favorite Stones album? Mine so far... Beggar's, I Guess? I don't know. That's rough. There are so many damn good albums LOL including this one! Crazy.
Favorite Stones album? Easy: Sticky Fingers. A slightly drug themed album so potent that just sniffing the vinyl can get you hooked.
Sticky Finger or Beggars Banquet, but I like the Stones most in Scorsese movies.
Let it Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Sticky Fingers (then Exile, then Some Girls) but I do love a ton of the songs from the Brian Jones era of the band. The US compilation album Flowers is maybe my most played Stones record.

"Monkey Man" has always been a personal favorite. Thank you to whoever requested it.
me too.
My favorite, also. So glad to see it finally show up here.
Keith plays all the guitars on Let It Bleed and Monkey Man! This may have been Keith at his best.
Thanks man and RIP Nicky Hopkins
The Greatest Rock and Roll Band. Got no problem with that statement.
"Take my arm, take my leg, oh baby don't you take my head"- classic lyrics
Big Thanks Kathy G! Excellent choice 🐵
Monkey Man is such a GROOVE!!!
Two great songs ...of course, it's the Stones

It's a really great memory that Monkey Man always brings back. So thank you Lee & Kathy
I remember those times
"...with that faded, jaded, junkie nurse" Fab lyrics
It's faded, faded, junkiness.
@@cognitiveawareness5833 Wrong! @andrew rennan7291 has it right. “With that faded, jaded, junkie nurse, oh what company!”
Such a great album, one of those you can play from beginning to end, without touching the tone arm!
That intro to Monkey Man..is just sooooo badass 😎 😊😊😊
Loved this request Kathy G! Absolute rocker! Thanks for adding "Let It Bleed" L33, great choice and commentary! ☮❤🎶
Two great songs, Kathy G. Thanks a lot.
There’s one for you, Barry!😅
Oh man oh man! Monkey Man! One of my favorites. I still can picture the first time I heard this...
Pure Keith with that Open G guitar tuning growl.
Simple genius!!
One thing that made both the Beatles and the Stones so great (among many, many other things) was their drummers.
Peak stones
Yup
Mmm. The Apex.
GIMME SHELTER👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I loved both of those ❤ the stones are so good.
Keith is playing the slide on Let It Bleed.
Mick Taylor barely plays on the album Let It Bleed. Keith plays nearly every guitar track.
Two very under reacted to songs from the brilliant Rolling Stones. THANK YOU, and thank you Kathy!!!
Of course! I’m glad you enjoyed 🙏🙏 these guys are the best 😎
Saw Steel Wheels tour in '89. When they played Monkey Man, the stage was dark during the intro and they had these colored lights that synced up with those vibraphone/piano phrases. Unforgettable. Awesome song and great show.
Whomever said "peak stones" is right ❤
Monkey Man has such a great groove. Spectacular!
Stones ❤❤❤ Great choices!
My favorite album changes depending on my mood or circumstances as life goes on! ❤❤❤
Any of the Mick Taylor albums, got that classic Stones sound!!!
Two of my favorite Stones songs.
Monkey Man is playfully answering all the exaggerated rumors about Mick's life style. Now he is an exercise junkie!
I well remember when this album came out. Love most all of their stuff; hard to pick a favorite album.
Monkey Man live when Lisa Fischer was with them is mind blowing. Mick and Lisa, together is magic.
Thanks, Lee! Both of these are so good from what I think is my favorite Stones album. There's so many ❤
Part of the soundtrack of my early adolescence. Monkey Man is a favorite of mine. Thanks for enjoying this.
Welcome! Thanks for the great bonus track, Lee!
Great request! 😊
"CAN'T YA HEAR ME KNOCKIN?" IS ONE VERY UNLIKE MOST STONES, IT'S EXCELLENT!!😎👍🏼👍🏼
🐒 ♂️ Monkey Man is one of my Stoney favs. Keep it rockin' Now L33 🎶🎶🎵🎶🔥💯✌️☮️🕊️🇺🇸
Two great tracks from my favourite album.
Stray Cat Blues is a cold nasty rocker
Great song, one of my faves 👍

"Let it Bleed" is my favorite album. There is an absolute great version of "Let it Bleed" on the live album "Stripped".
One their best albums ever!❤

This is the good stuff. Oh, and Mick Taylor era Stones rocks!
Congrats on 4 years ! Grew up on these songs , still so good !
Wore out this album on vinyl TWICE! To me it sounds fresh as ever!
Two of the top tier.
Let it Bleed is ICONIC.
Thirty-six thousand! Congratulations! 🙂 Next up? One Million!!!
IMHO their greatest album. Perfection.
Exile then Sticky then Bleed😎
Good ones. I really enjoyed Monkey Man.
Thank you, Kathy G!
Thanks Kathy G for such a great pick. I have always loved everything about this, vocals instruments, well the whole package. Rock on. Both songs brightened my day. Blessings all. Peace

I've always been a fan of the Stones, but the Mick Taylor era is ( IMO) the best.
Love the way Mick pronounces “lean on”.

Yeah the descending piano with the slide counterpart ......wow and the abrupt transition back absolute genius
The entire album is amazing! Let it Bleed is my favorite but that's a hard pick. Always loved The Stones, a most amazing band!
Monkey Man is my favorite Stones song along with about 5 others :)
The middle part of Monkey Man is great. A sick album front to back.
