My faves from ATMP are 'Wah Wah', 'Beware of Darkness', 'What Is Life' and 'A-waiting On You All', closely followed by the rest of the tracks. Brilliant record ×3. Or 2, depending on your preferences, some don't dig the jams. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤔

Oh man that jam was WONDERFUL. there’s nothing quite so rewarding , for listener and musicians both, than players with top skills just jamming out.
I’m reminded of the Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, and studio players ( Sklar, Wachtel and Kunkel) jamming on Funk 49. If you haven’t heard that, check it out on UA-cam. They’re just grinning away.

  • @ednieto05
    @ednieto05 8 днів тому +1

Great reactions, Lee! You will also love "The Art of Dying"" - a scorching rocker with another deep message from George. It's a hard rocker from start to finish that is awash with the Wall of Sound! Brilliant song! "Apple Scruffs" is a great little love song from George to the Beatles fans (mostly girls) that used to hang outside of Apple Corps every day to see the Beatles coming and going. The band got quite close with these hardcore fans in the late 1960s, and even hired some to work for the Beatles. From the Apple Jam disc from All Things Must Pass, check out "Thanks for the Pepperoni" a great rocking jam with Harrison trading solos and licks with Clapton and Dave Mason and also features Carl Radle, Bobby Whitlock and Jim Gordon. IMHO, it's the best song on the Apple Jam disc. "I Live for You," recorded for ATMP, but not released until the 2001 reissue is absolute gem. Not sure why it was left off the original! Love your videos, dude!

During an interview with Guitar World, Zakk Wylde, (Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera etc) reflected on the brilliance of the seminal ‘Something’ track on 1969’s acclaimed Abbey Road. “What an amazing song,” he said of one of the most delightful love tracks to grace The Beatles catalogue. “He even got Sinatra and Elvis covering that one, which goes to show how amazing it is,” Wylde added.
Wylde continued: “Me and John DeServio, who plays bass with me, often talk about George [Harrison] - whenever he solos, you always know it’s him. Even when he was playing in The Traveling Wilburys, you could always tell.”

There is a great video of an interview with Frampton where he talks about how he first found about about the talk box that he ended up famously using later on. He talks about being at some of the 'All Things Must Pass' sessions. Pete Drake was there too, he was a renowned pedal steel player, any time you hear that on this album it's him (not to be confused with George playing 'regular' slide guitar). Pete Drake invented the talk box, he had used it on radio ads in the 60's. He showed the talk box to Frampton, who decided he had to have one. Great interview, they interview Drake as well and he talks about his early usage of it.

Yes it was the third "Apple Jam" disc. The best thing about this disc (besides "It's Johnny's Birthday" he wrote for John) was the label on the record. Gone was an Apple and replacing it was a jam jar with "Apple Jam" printed on the lid. The Beatles were always clever with their visual presentations. Very clever and professional job in the commercial art dept.

Hi L33 - Absolutely no compaints with more George. Love George's version of "If Not For You," The Dylan version is good too. I love all the little components that go in to making up this song... Everything adds a texture and can be heard it's not muddy at all which is the danger when you have so much going on at the same time. As for "Out Of The Blue".... yup that was on disc 3. And they are all Jams.... Including :"It's Johnny's Birthday".. A song stangley enough for John's birthday. Which George gave John a copy of before the album came out.
This was the first Triple album I ever bought. And remains the best. At the time it was considered expensive and the record company wondered if it would be bought in large numbers.. Bur I think we all know how that worry went... For goodness sake, it was GEORGE HARRISON....!!! And we all needed Beatles recordings.
I just love that in the first few years after the break up George and Ringo were more successful than John and Paul... Hard to believe and get your head around at this point in time but it's true.
As for the Phil Spector production.... well, as Phil usually does, he got the tapes and then did nothing with them for a long time, so George had to get them back and do a lot of production himself. So this was REALLY a George project.

Out of the Blue is the opener or closer for disc 3 depending on the album: the 1970 release has it as the first track and the 2001 reissue has it as the closing track, apparently as George originally intended. Neither issue, however, includes any sugar sprinkled on top of the Apple Jam.

George intended 'Out Of The Blue' to be the last track and climax of the triple album but for some reason or mess up which I forget it became track 1 of side 5. Definitely works better as last track. The third disc Apple Jam is part of the album as far as I'm concerned...brilliant stuff.
George must be the best Dylan interpreter. 'I Threw It All Away' and 'Mama You Been On My Mind' are 2 more.
'Here Comes The Sun' reminded me of 'My Sweet Lord' on the radio today so there was crossover with his Beatles and non-Beatles sound.
Scorsese likened listening to ATMP to walking into a cathedral. He directed the George documentary.
Sugar on top song for me is 'Life Itself' from Somewhere In England LP...sublime.

👍 Good ear! I’ve heard this lots before. I never really noticed that! Very similar for that small part. I wonder if it’s just a coincidence or who nicked who? Harrison‘s album came out in November of 1970. And Sticky Fingers came out in April 1971. So it looks like the Stones might’ve “borrowed” from it. And this is coming from a diehard Stones fan as you can tell by my handle. Or maybe it’s just a coincidence. Hard to say when each individual track was recorded. I suppose that could be researched but I’m too lazy! 😆

They co-wrote 'I'd Have You Anytime.' But 'If Not For You' was Dylan's. The same year he was making All Things Must Pass, George dropped by when Dylan was recording New Morning and plays on several takes of songs and jams that didn't make the Dylan record. One of these was 'If Not For You' (released on the first Bootleg series set). In 1968, they co-wrote 'I'd Have You Anytime' and 'Nowhere to Go.'

It's weird to me, but the "jams" disk got some criticism as "filler". But how in the hell could you assemble that group of musicians and NOT record their jams?? Right? Jim Gordon was outstanding here...I don't know if he was considered a part of the "Wrecking Crew", but he was definitely on the A-list of studio musicians in LA. He is so creative here because he could play any genre of music. He recorded with everybody!
