- In this video I show you my Singer 319W machine that I converted from motorized to treadle in a No. 21 drawing-room cabinet that has the machine lift-system. This is the plain Mission style 21 cabinet in tiger oak. The 319W machines were made around 1955-57.
I am using around 37 different treadle or hand-crank machines in my collection for Kathryn Kerr's "365 Challenge" sampler quilt project. I am sewing 10-11 different blocks on each of my different machines and sharing the machines used as I go through this project throughout the year. - Навчання та стиль
Oh!! You’re back posting again!! You’ve been missed!! Going to catch up on all your new videos ❤❤❤❤

Saw the picture and clicked on it and heard your voice and thought wow how did I miss fiddleyBits video on this cool machine. Then I scrolled down and saw .. I am only 7 hours late. I have the green one they are soo cool wanted one for a long time then one popped up locally. Glad you like it also and a very very good video as always from you. Thank you
So sweet that you recognize my voice and say you missed me. :-) I'll be making a new video with a different machine throughout the year as I work through this 365 Challenge sampler quilt. I have a fun story for you about my green 319W portable. I took it to a quilting workshop and it put all the new machines to shame as it blazed right through every task. I was the first to complete the project and that included all the dense FM quilting. These are truly amazing machines!! Thanks for the very kind comment.
@@FiddleyBits Yes you have a lovely voice and a enviable way of speaking. Just perfect and pleasant informative videos. Nice flow I am all over the place jumping around and talking too fast and many have too many useless filler words. What can I say you are a stand out. It is a gift :-)
@FiddleyBits how can I contact you do you have an email address to give? I am in Fremont California.
I think it's neat that some of the later models machines could be used as a hand crank or a treadle One of those came up for sale near me and I didn't get it. Kind of thinking I should have
Beautiful cabinet and machine. I never see those cabinets in that condition, always moldy where I live. Thanks for showing this.
Amaziiinggg ❤❤
Lovely machine. I love my vintage machines. I've converted my treadles to hand cranks since I've been having knee issues. I'm in love with hand cranks now. Thanks for sharing nice to see you back on UA-cam. ❤
Mi máquina es de ese modelo. Genial.
Máquina de costura muito bonita parabéns
I'm sat besides my Mission style 21 cabinet. I never noticed the mirrored veneer before! Another fascinating video!
It's amazing isn't it. I have two of these, sold a 3rd, and all 3 have this beautiful mirror-grain oak veneer. My walnut cabinet doesn't have the mirrored veneer, but they did go to the trouble of making sure the grain was oriented in the same vertical direction down the doors. I think of the cabinet makers in those busy factories taking the time to be so careful about creating those doors--it's just wonderful. Only a custom cabinet artist would do that today. And, these cabinet are so well made and solid. I just love the quality of antique/vintage machines and cabinets. Thanks for the nice comment and I'm so glad I was able to show you something new and wonderful. :-)
@@FiddleyBits Speaking of veneer ... I've noticed the bottom of my front doors both have "587" stamped on them and the same number in grease pencil on the bottom of my lifting tray. I think these cabinets were fitted up, then disassembled to veneer the individual pieces and the odd number markings were to keep the fitted pieces together.
@@Doctor_Al Could be. It always amazes me how well built these old cabinets are and how carefully they put them together in those huge busy factories.
@@FiddleyBits Yep, I went and looked more closely at mine today and I'm now convinced the purpose was to keep the book matched veneer doors together and get them back to the cabinet to which they had been fitted. This was all at a time before advances in manufacturing made parts highly interchangeable.
If you use a 20U bobbin case, you can use a 15 X 1 needle. Same for 306.
I'm so happy with this video. I'm a real fan of the 319 and it's wonderful to see someone else really appreciate it.
This is as close to an industrial machine as Singer ever made for the domestic market. The first domestic zigzag Singer made was the predecessor to the 319, the 206 in 1936. Singer based the 206 in large part on their industrial machines. In the 1950's they then made the 306, the 319 and in I believe the early 1960's the 320. The great thing is that while they improved the later models of this machine, they kept the internal mechanisms from the 206. In other words, the 319 from the late 1950's uses industrial design internal mechanisms from the 1930's. That's why the bobbin set up is as it is. And when they made the 319 in the late 1950's, they went with "retro" (industrial) design features, such as the moving mechanisms on the outside of the machine and the typewriter keys that harkened back to the 1930's. It's a unique, beautiful, very robust and in every way a truly brilliant machine.
Thanks for your wonderful video.
Thanks for the info on the 319 development!! I didn't know any of that and it does explain why it's such a great machine. I just finished my 11 days of the 365 project with it and it was perfect. Beautiful stitch and such a joy to use. I'm glad I have it and a second one (two-tone green) that is portable. I'll be keeping these two until I can't sew any more! :-)
@@FiddleyBits You're very welcome. Did you know that as part of the documentation that came with the 319 was a set of pictorial instructions of how to set up the 319 as a treadle? I have a copy in my files. So they actually contemplated the 319 would be used by people as a treadle, just as you have done. One of the more capable treadle machines I would think.
The 319 was made from 1956-1962 and the 320 from 1958 to 1962. I have them both, they are wonderful machines. I do prefer the 320 with a flatbed conversion because the bobbin is so much easier to access. I also replaced the old stretched out cloth timing belts with a corded rubber belt; makes them run nearly silent.
@@artillerybuff2000I've been wondering whether I should change out the cleated belt on min for one of the new rubber belts. I take that you believe it's a worthwhile thing to do, is that right?
@@artillerybuff2000 I take it that you believe that changing out the belt is a worthwhile thing to do? I've been thinking about doing that myself but haven't made up my mind.
I have heard, but have not confirmed, that the DB1 (1738 Industrial) size needle works fine in these machines. This makes sense as they kind of split the difference between the standard 15 (Domestic) size and the obsolescent 206 size this machine takes. Some combination of eye-to-shank and eye-to-point distances, apparently. I do know you can't count on running a 15 needle in these without problems. You can swap the bobbin case, too, but I haven't tried that myownself.
There are options. I had the first production model of this machine and Singer retrofitted the bobbin case to accommodate all needles. The case may be adjusted with a Dremel tool, purchasing an "open case" or the bobbin case from a Singer # 20U machine ( you need the the bobbins ). Some people would "re-time the machine, but that is really not satisfactory.
@@1953childstar Or, as I found out, just buy and use 1738 (DBx1) needles. They run just fine in a swing-needle machine with an unmodified bobbin case.
Love it and love those Parlour / Drawing room cabinets !! Could you please do another video showing the foot treadle pedal in operation when sewing ! Glen
😢 I can’t get notifications for your videos. Every time I try to click the bell it says error. And sometimes it says this is disabled because it is kids content. I need your videos, I learn so much from you.
Add me to the list of people who can subscribe but can't activate notifications. I, too, get some kind of error about kids content.
I'm not getting any sound on this clip. I figured it is because the kids' filter blocks out all the cuss words.
Did the 319W sit down OK into the wooden tray? I have a #21 and want to put my 201-2 in it. But, it sits a bit wonky. It'd be usable but looks funny. The 15-91 sit flat but about .030" high. [I'll use the electric motors, not treadle] Again, usable, but not what I want. I could remove metal from the underside of the machine (gasp) or slightly modify the wooden tray (gasp2!), neither of which appeal to me.
I'd appreciate knowing if yours fit without modifications.
The 319W does sit a bit proud in this cabinet, but I tolerate it. Since you have to insert the bobbin/case from underneath, I do not have the drip tray under the machine--it is open under there. That way I just reach under and put the bobbin case in or out. I, too, have found that not all machines fit perfectly in these older cabinets, and I understand why you don't want to remove or modify the trays. I do remove the trays when necessary and bag them up marked well with the info about where they came from, so I can put them back in at a later date.
I looked at this model one time but it was noted it was almost impossible to find the needles.
Will any full size spoked hand wheel fit on a 319, or is there a certain one I should try to find?
I don't remember which machine I took this spoked wheel off of, but one off of a Singer 66, 15, 99 or 201 should be fine. The Singer machines older than the ones mentioned would have heavier wheels, which would probably also work, but I'm not certain. The new Singer replacement wheels that you can buy online should also work. You can treadle the 319 with the original hand-wheel, but it runs slower that with the spoked wheel. I absolutely LOVE treadling my 319...it is a wonderful treadle machine.
What Hand wheel is use to convert the hand wheel to treadle.
Pretty much any standard Singer SPOKED hand wheel should fit. You can buy new replacement spoked wheels if you don't have an old machine available.
Did your cabinet come with a key?
CORRECTION!!! My 1st answer to your question was incorrect!! I didn't realize some of the drawing-room cabinets have different locks than most other cabinets. I did NOT get a key with any of my cabinets like this one and you can not open this kind with a small screwdriver. SORRY for the error!!!. Following answer is WRONG WRONG WRONG===>>>All Singer cabinets with locks originally came with keys. I don't remember if this one came with a key. All the keys are the same for Singer cabinets and have a triangle shaped tip. A small flat-head screwdriver will work just fine for locking/unlocking a Singer cabinet.
I got a SINGER 319K from my cousin. And I went to test it, the machine mistakenly came with a 15x1 needle. I sewed fabrics with zig zag and straight stitching. And the needle bent and the thread tangled underneath the seam. After that, the machine stopped moving the needle column to oscillate in the zig zag and decorative stitches. But the SINGER 319K can sew a straight seam perfectly well. If I move the needle positioning lever (left, center or right). I can manually move the needle column. But when I activate the decorative stitches from the keyboard using the internal CAM disk, the needle column no longer moves. Do you have a video showing how to disassemble the SINGER 319K and repair this part that makes the needle column move? I ask you please. Singer 319K is excellent and Strong sewing machine.
No, sorry, I have never taken one of these apart. Also, don't have any idea of how to help you with this problem. 😢
@@FiddleyBits Thank you. I live in Brazil.
do you have the hoop an darning foot attacment an if so can you make a video on how to use them ta
I do have a darning hoop and have used it. They are fairly difficult to use, but do work. I don't have the time to make a video showing how to use one, though, sorry.
@@FiddleyBits where can i get an o ring for the bobing winder to work witch one did u buy i have the same problem on my 319k singer
@@rndea100 The best way to get the o-ring that would fit your spoked handwheel would be to take the handwheel to a shop that sells o-rings and make sure it fits your wheel correctly. That's about all I can recommend and is what I did.
@@FiddleyBits i did that no luck
