- This is my second patcher film and in this one I show you the needles and thread that I use, as well as a demonstration of treadling action and sewing a circle as if patching a boot!

Thanks to your videos, I bought myself an old Singer 1928 K58 patcher (with treadle base) and restored it. Its an awesome machine that allows you to do so many things that are impossible with traditional machines. I made a table top for mine based on an original sears catalog picture of the optional table top that was available for these. I love the front mounted hand wheel and would encourage people to look for machines with the proper setup for mounting the hand wheel in either front or rear locations.Most parts seem fairly easy to get. The thread I use in the US is #69 (also called T70) bonded nylon (upholstery thread). I got lucky and bought mine for 250 USD and spent maybe another $40-$50 on parts and about 20hrs of my time for cleaning and fixing. Many restored fully operational units can go for $700-$900 in the US. Wish I could find a Singer 133K like yours, but never see them even on Ebay.

Harry, I just finished another 29k. I had to buy a few parts from College Sewing. I have an electric stand that the machine sits on and the belt runs from the stand. Both of my machines are in great shape and sew excellent. Can't beat these old singer machines.

I too have a Singer 29K53 and also a 29K15, and I have found your excellent videos very informative and helpful. The 29K53 has the same catch as yours to press to release the cover plate over the bobbin and shuttle. Other models have a round button instead. In my case, the tiny flat spring under the catch had broken and the catch would drop and wouldn't hold the plate still. The plate would then move and the needles would break. My attempts to find a replacement spring on-line only found the alternative round spring. Yesterday I finally had the brainwave to make such a spring from a junior hacksaw blade. I cut a piece to approx 40mm, held it in mole grips and ground it down to 3mm wide. Hey presto, I had a new spring which works just fine! So if you ever get stuck for such a spring, that's the way to fix it!

You could maybe also shape a matching thickness feeler gauge arm taken from an engineering set. These are available very cheaply and are spring steel

Oh Hey Harry I use 11/18 29x4 needle not with a chisel I sew patches on leather jackets you think that might leave a bigger hole the letter is like buffolo thickness, or do you think the pointed one would be best?
Do you use the waxing pot for the thread ? What does it do to benefit the thread ? I haven't added it to mine yet thanks !

I have nearly the same machine! Minds a 29k55 from 1922, the treddle looks a bit different and mine is rustier since it was used in a saddlery for quite a few years. It works really good, though I'm having some problems with the bobbin jamming up but I think it's because im using such thick thread. I've got a pile of jeans a foot and a half tall that need patching, plus a pair of shredded overalls and I broke my last canvas needle this morning (I think I ran over a zipper). So we've ordered some more.
Sounds like you are making good use of it...I found Gutterman upholstery thread was pretty good ...it's thick but not ultra thick.
@@harryrogers well I had run out of my original thread that I had and I was like "I guess I gotta order new stuff now" so I just ordered it through the store (I work in my uncle's saddle repair shop, he repairs stuff for the local tack store) and it was heavier than expected haha. At first I was having problems with the bobbin being too tight so I found one that didn't have the tensioner thingy on it (that metal piece that holds the thread on the side) and it works pretty good.

Thanks this was helpful to see. On these machines is there a back stitch function like modern machines, to lock the thread before putting running through the stitch?

well iam sure glad you made this video i use a No 29-4 awesome machine, ha ha I know now i put the bobbin upside down and the 3 oclock hmm I will try that, also i thought it couldnt handle the thread that it was to thick. but i think i will oil it up and get the tension correct just is very touchy, Get Video Thank You!!!!

It is rusted solid ! Because it was left out in all weathers .
I have spent all day soaking it in WD40 , giving this and that a tap/wiggle/turn , and . . . , got it working ! !
I hope to be able to restore , and use it !
Any way I can get a manual ? They don't do this model , I have not found one yet .

The cylinder arm is a bit longer than some of the 29k patchers I have seen ...works fine tho !

Hi Harry, I tried sewing yesterday with a size 120 needle and Gutermann Tera 20 thread at top and bottom. After about an inch of sewing, the needle broke. I think because it was a thick needle, it needed moving to the left a bit as it must have hit the bobbin holder. I unscrewed the top screw above the needle a bit but I can only shift the thing a tiny bit to the left. Is it meant to be like this? The manual isn't very clear. I will also try thinner thread on the bobbin so I can fit more on.

I have a patcher, its a great machine, the only tiny fly in the ointment with it is the capacity of the shuttle, you cant sew a great amount without filling it up of course it was never designed for great long runs.

How do you get your cast iron so nice? I have the exact same setup however the treadle has small patches of rust.

I've viewing a few of your videos :) Thank you. I by chance ran across an Adler 30-7 (green) with treadle base. But running with motor. I have been told they are knock offs of the 29k's. So your videos have been a lot of help. My only other treadle machine experience is with my G Grandmas Singer 66 Red eye.

Hi, do you think this machine would be ideal for stitching leather sweatbands into felt fats? I am just getting into the craft of hatting and find that hat-specific machines are too expensive or impossible to find. There is a patcher available near me, and would like someone's opinion on whether or not it would be suitable for this purpose? Thank you!
That sounds like a reasonable use...I have put leather patches on knitted jumpers with it so I GUESS it would work with felt. The bobbins are small and there is no needle feed but you would be doing small runs and on smooth surfaces, so to me it seems a reasonable relatively inexpensive approach...of course I have not tried this, so at your risk. What exactly is that material you're using at 6:40???? I've been looking for the same textured/ type of material but I don't know the exact name!

Harry. Iam from South America , I got this machine in a auction, it was lot of 6 diferent old machines. See... I just wanted one of them but the deal was for the six . So I am learning how to use it. I don{t know if the thread must go all the way down to the needle or just to the slot on top of it, then out and then to the needle eye. Do you thread the needle from left to right ? Harry, any idea what the hole is on the tray of the base? Where they to hold a leg of a table leg to make a flat bed? Looks like a hole in an anvil! :-)
Hi I have not got mine to look at now, but yes I think so...there are a couple of nibs on the machine itself to take a table, and in one of my vids I show the attaching of a wood table to the machine...sorry I can't remember which video!

Hi there Harry , I have the Patcher 29-4 ..... & I love it .... I have not the right bobbins , the ones I have split horizontially , I'm not sure why , I have been using pre wound bobbins from Coats & Clark .... I think they hold more thread than if you wound your own ... I hope to find some od the right bobbins before I run out of the pre wound ones .... & have you a flat bed with yours , I am trying to make one , I'm sure it is easy just need a bit of a hinge for the " foot " .... could you show the flat bed if you have one & the measurements ... I have a band saw & can cut one quite nicely I'm sure .... just wondering what you have .... I'm in California USA
Harry, I have two machines, one with a treadle and the other is electric. The one with the treadle works great. I am almost finished with the other one, but I have run into a snag. The one that I am not quite finished with has larger stem on the shuttle carrier and it does not fit into the hole, or its very tight if I would force it. I have rebuilt it all the way to putting the bobbin carrier in and had to stop. This gear box must be some kind of clone. All of the parts were interchangeable accept for this. I've spent a bunch of time on these, and I would like to finish them, Any Suggestions????????

Harry, where do you get your Bonded Nylon NM40 from? I ordered similar stuff from China, but it's nothing like the thickness it's supposed to be. It's expensive in the USA as well as postage and import tax! Do you get it in the UK?

If you are thinking of who I am thinking of, they're rip off merchants when it comes to postage charges. £25 for three cones to be shipped to the Netherlands? (That was only the postage!!!) My 1945 SINGER 29K70 came to me without a bobbin winder... your machine also appears to be missing one. Do you just wind your bobbins by hand?
I seem to be having trouble finding the correct size bolts to attach my patcher to the treadle. It’s a K29. Are they an odd size?
Yes...but I don'tknowwhat type...College Sewing machines might sell them...I know some people retap the threads.

Yes, it's a tallow bath.
If I want to. Would it be possible to put the hand crank wheel on the other side?
I think it can go on the right hand end of the machine, I don't think it can be mounted on the other side.
Hi Harry, I’ve just bought a patcher 29K15 in a shocking, seized state. I’m having to drill out screws and pins. Have you any idea what thread standard Singer used, BSF, BSW or propriety . I have lots of taps and dies, a lathe and mill but can’t identify the threads because mine are too badly rusted.thanks for any pointers you can give, Mike

What is the maximum leather thickness that you can sew on this machine? Is 1,5-2cm possible?
It was designed for patching jackets and boots etc. In another video I put various leathers through it.

Hello Harry, I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I am in the process of restoring a Singer 29K I came stuck when I found out, that the sawing circle is totally seized won't turn at all. any ideas are most welcome thanks.
I assume the thumbscrew that tightens and locks it in position is loose? Otherwise maybe penetrating oil and hot rags to loosen it? Do look at a parts diagram e.g. off ISMACS website that has free manuals to see how it's assembled.
@@harryrogers Thank you, Harry. I did put a flame torch to it with lots of dw40, and other thin oil. hasn't budged at all. I already broke one of the screws. , now I am searching around to replace the screw

Hello Harry! Nice video! I've just serviced a Singer 29 that I believe to be the predecessor to your machine, a cobblers machine. I've been trying to work out what wax to use in the wax tray, and if it should be liquid (molten?) or solid. All help is appreciated! Best regards

Hello Harry. I just got a treadle myself. What a difference. I have been trying to find a tiny screw, to screw into the carrier shuttle. Believe it or not, I tried to find them on eBay and a few other sites. Nobody knows what I'm even talking about. They used to press them in, but on a site tonight, the guy said to just grind the head off of the screw and make a notch at one end, then just force it in the little hole on the shuttle. I've tried to find those little screws, but I think they're all gone. Thanks

Hello 8 years later :) can you tell me what needles do I need? I used Groz-beckert 120-19 Nm but I want thicker needles because these break often. I think 130/21 Nm should work for me but don't know what system do I need. If you or anyone else in the comments knows please tell me it would be extremely appreciated!

I talked to you a few months ago about finding a singer 29-4 and a month ago I meet a very sweet older lady that had on well I talked her into selling it to me just brought it home yesterday. Need to build dolly for base but all original and her husband built table like you describe . She gave me all her needles ,scraps of leather,needle threaders,extra bobbins.But I would like to know of businesses that can supply parts and pieces for this machine . thank you Deb in Vermont

Could you grind the walking foot smooth so it does not mar or impress the leather?
Yes some people do that, if you do just start by taking the bite off the foot....the leather will tend to slip more...so consider this before grinding anything, and perhaps make sure you have a spare foot first. You can reduce marking by releasing foot tension and putting paper over the sewing, and that might be a better approach.

Would this machine be suitable for making bags etc. I'm just starting with a very limited budget and I can't afford a new Juki/Adler. Looking for the best low cost option that is functional and reliable. Found one of these just a few kilometers down the road for 500.
I would prefer to use a Singer 331k or a Singer 31k which should both be a lot cheaper...personal view of course.

How does this compare to the 29-4?
The patchers start with the 29...and then the next digit usually shows model number......early and late models.....and there are also long and short arm versions....google some more and you will see what I mean! Regards Harry

Hi Harry, College Sewing didn't really know which screws I needed but thought the frame screws may be the ones - they turned out to be tiny so no luck there. Would be possible for you to measure one of yours and count the threads per inch and let me know the sizes - maybe even send a photo? I am assuming that all the models had the same size screws but I may be wrong. Its very frustrating as I am dying to start sewing!

,I just saw your question today to Harry Rogers regarding Singer mounting screws for a patcher. Singer made their "Own" thread pitch for their machines so people would be forced to come back and buy any needed bolts in the future from them. The easiest solution Is to buy a new thread tap for the next larger size hole. They are not expensive and are available from any hardware or tool store.I'm not sure where you live but if I can help email me thru UA-cam.I have been restoring 29-4 & 29K machines for years !

Yes it would work fine, the stitching may not be the most refined but it is alright and if sewing leather you can hammer over the stitches to flatten them. If sewing for a business at scale you might want a more refined industrial sewing machine.
@@harryrogers Hey. Thanks for the advice. I’m just a potential hobbyist. I found one for auction. It’s probably going to be next to nothing to buy, but it will need maintenance. My aim is to sew nylon fabric. I have a feeling it will work out. If not, I suppose I can resell it.

LesterVerano it's not got the power of a sole stitcher or of a modern post bed.....but it might on light soles??? Hopefully others who make shoes can comment.

I found one for $300 that has been sitting in a garage for about 25 years. Things move they’re just stiff…. I’ve never restored one and may like to try but I’m reluctant to ruin it by attempting. Do you have any sources that you would suggest, books videos, manuals or otherwise, that would be helpful in the process. I found one that was recently restored, everything but the decals, for $900.

Good afternoon Harry, and Merry Christmas. I recently bought a Patcher, (29K58) with treadle base and it was sewing quite well until I changed the cotton thread that came with it, to synthetic. It's quite thick, but approximately the same as the original thread. It has started to give me real problems in the tension department? All the stitches are being pulled up and sort of leaving a loop on the top of the work. No matter how I try to resolve the problem, it still does the same. You seem to have the most experience with the patcher, any ideas? I'm sewing relatively thin leather, but two layers. I was sewing 4 layers this morning with cotton thread and no problems whatsoever. I must be missing something fundamental, here, as I am sure (I think!) that the synthetic stuff doesn't cause me the problems I'm having......does it?

Thanks for that Harry, but the tension on the bobbin is as tight as it can go. I put on the cotton based thread again and guess what? It is behaving perfectly. I can only assume that either I am using the wrong type of needles, or the machine is just being a real pain in the a. I'll have to try some other methods. The stitch length also seems to be not quite right. I have sen some other forum, where they mention that if I can move the foot more than a 16th of an inch either way, the cam is worn. So, it seems that my cam is worn. Although I haven't opened up the machine yet, is it a part that can be replaced easily? Does it make a difference if the bobbin is placed with the notch any way up, or if the thread is supposed to feed into the tensioner from any particular direction? Just thoughts, but maybe there's some logic behind the misbehaviour when it comes to synthetic threads. Thank you for the videos, I will watch. Alan
OK, found the cause. When I first put in some thick white thread, it worked ok, then I ran out of bobbin thread, so I changed it for black. What I didn't see, was that I had not put the thread under the tension spring of the bobbin. I had the tension spring wound tight as it was causing the loops on the top of the work, so consequently, when I changed the thread, this time I couldn't get it under the tension spring, purely because of bad light and I was fast losing patience with myself. OK, I did watch the two videos on the 29K and I understand it more now.. I do have quite a bit of movement in the walking foot, though, but I can get 8 stitches to the inch and for me that's w=quite alright. Is the cam replaceable?

I spoke too soon, Harry. I finally come up with the idea that it hates this black thread and it looks a real mess on the top of the work with loops, missed stitches etc.(ET30 if that means anything to you?). The white stuff (ET20) is behaving oerfectly. I think I'll order cotton unless I see something on Ebay that matches the white stuff. Ever trying!!!! Alan

so uhmm... your stiches are bad we can all see it... looks like you got some new disks as well, i would assume the shutle is new since you bothered to change/clean the plate, i know its a 3 year old upload but whats up with that? wrong needle size? your tension seems to be set as low as it can be set and your still getting down stiches on the upper side of the material. its it a thing with these machines not much can be done about it?
Hi Carlos...you can set the tension on these fairly easily and it holds it...this looks rough but it was just a quick demo with a single layer...more bobbin tension or less top tension would have sorted this plus using two layers of leather. It's a good machine, though I rarely use it as I use needle feed and larger bobbin machines most of the time. Rgds Harry
wow 3 year old upload and still here, that was quite impressive. and quick. sorry if it looked like a prick comment, dont doubt its a good machine, my though process comes from you seemingly desregarding the litle arm on top with no pull and together with the low tension on the disks i jumped into thinking it could be a "machine" quirk seeing as they fit more into "hard" shoe work then light fabric and it wanking the bottom thread would just be something the machine did. ty for the comment you have a gr8 channel i have been binge watching you for the last days @@harryrogers
