I had almost no knowledge in English, math, physics, chemistry, and etc. I took the math and English entrance tests in order to enroll in a college. Start at zero but that don't mean the inherited potential is the same for everyone. There seems to be a limit for different people. I wonder if Khan wants customers for some courses?
"We all start at *zero*.. " Well, guess what? I'm now at standard for all of my subjects and even above for some. I have learned how to play the Ukulele and I have been taking Squash / Tennis lessons for the past few weeks. And today, I began learning how to code. But, why am I telling you all of this? It's not because I'm bragging. I used to be a nobody. I used to be someone who was never willing to try new things. I used to be someone who gave up easily. And I used to be someone who thought everyone had a natural talent and I was the only one who didn't. Incase there are people who are in need of help or motivation. Let me tell you a story of a deaf boy. Due to his disability, he has a hard time learning stuff. He never learnt to count until 4 years old. He would fail everything. Math, English, Science. Usually, everyone would just quit but not him. He worked through countless tuition and speech therapy. 7 years later, he is in a prestigious school with a great future. He wants to have countless occupations - Radiologist, Game Developer, Bio-Engineer, Technologist, Businessman. He gets great marks in math and biology with an A on his final exam. While he does have amazing scores, he still have flaws and struggles with chemistry, history and English but he still practice and uses his time. You may think that this person is incredible but believe me, it's not. It's not the power of himself, it's the power of never giving up and self-determination. If he, a deaf person can somehow pull this off, then you, an amazing person can do it too. All you need is the power of never giving up and self-determination. And that deaf person... is me. Never give up, your most difficult obstacle will become your warm up.
Public education infuriates me by letting certain kids believe they are genuinely dumb. Ever since I was born up to high school, I've been told I was 'dumb'. Do you know why? It's because I was extremely shy and I hid myself from the world and everyone. No one understood why I wouldn't utter a word. So guess what? At first, they put me in an institution for people with cognitive problems. I sat there, looking at those people with those disabilities and thinking: "This is not me. I don't belong here". Finally, my parents got me out of there and I continued school as per usual. In high school I had the same problems. Thankfully that nightmare is over now and guess what: my grade average is 85% at university. I am just angry at all the people who thought I was dumb. After growing up I finally realized I am much smarter than the norm. I want to tell everyone: don't be fooled by narrow minded fools out there! Don't let anyone let think you are dumb because you are not! Believe in yourself! You can make it!
Sadly, people believe in a lot of nonsense. Another belief that holds people back is the idea of talent. "I'm not talented enough, so I won't waste my time." The reality is that there are very very few geniuses out there. The rest - most of the "talented" people - just practiced a lot. The secret ingredient is doing something you like or are interested in. That's your path to success. You may not become the second Michelangelo or Mozart, but how many artists are at their level? Hardly any. So yes, believe in yourself! Hard work bears fruit.
As a teacher myself, your story of frustration and struggle is heart-breaking to me. I'm genuinely sorry for the grief you suffered. On behalf of all teachers, I'm deeply sorry. We get it wrong sometimes, very wrong in your case especially, and your story of overcoming is truly inspiring. I wish you the best! May your experience inspire others to believe in themselves and the power of perseverance.
I'm a 27 year old Pilot/Flight Instructor. I'm not an emotional person, but I cry every time I watch this video. I had a terrible education growing up because of personal circumstances, and I was always very hard on myself. I felt stupid. My marks were never very good - mostly because I was never in class and I was missing fundamental concepts from earlier grades -. I graduated highschool not knowing my multiplication tables and feeling inferior. I'm now a Pilot, instructing, supervising other Instructors and flight training at a reputable Aviation College. With hard work, patience and perseverence, you can learn anything!
human is actually intelligent .Unfortunately, we , human, don't know how to be grateful. Laziness is our worst nightmare, always teach us how to give up in doing anything else.
It's been like 5 years since I 1st stumbled upon this video. I still come back to this video when I struggle with learning something new. This is by far the best motivational video I have seen. Thanks Khan academy
I can't imagine going to school without Kahn academy-- you guys have literally changed the way students interact with material. No one is "too far behind" anymore if they have the willpower and an internet connection. In high school, I could barely pass basic math-- I couldn't afford a tutor, and I'm not sure youtube really even existed yet lol. Going back to college as an adult, I've been a straight A student and am about to graduate at a top five medical school-- and I'd say about half of my basic sciences education came from your site and others like it. Thank you for everything, and I can't wait to donate to you from my first real job :)

Still coming back to this video after years. I took a huge break from studying maths and I'm now terrible at it. It's so easy to get tilted when you are in Early Maths and you mess up something because of a dumb mistake. Gotta remember this is all part of the process, it's all a mindset.
People on this comment section are very pessimistic about human capabilities. It just shows how weak you guys are mentally. Believe in yourself and be confident. It will fundamentally change you into a better person!
I can't appreciate this video enough. I'm going through a hard phase right now.. everything I thought I was good at, that identified me, I found people better than me at it. They can take away my victory, but they can never take away my capacity to learn.
Scias To be quite honest, nothing would scare me more shitless than to have nothing left to learn about. Be comforted by the knowledge that whatever you do, whatever direction you turn, there are treasures of knowledge, a myriad of deep oceans, every single one deep enough to never reach the bottom within your lifetime. And of those myriads of oceans, no two look or feel alike. And yes, you might be curious about the hidden realms of all the oceans you can't visit or go deep enough in, just because there are too many overall, but you can always rely on visitors of those hidden realms who brought back invaluable treasures to marvel about. Because of that, life can never, ever become boring. Not for a diver, that is. (In this metaphor by the way, religions are mud puddles on the wayside.)
Nobody's born smart. We all start at zero. Can't talk, can't walk, certainly can't do algebra. Adding, reading, writing, riding a bike, nobody's good at anything at first. There was a time when Einstein couldn't count to 10 and Shakespeare had to learn his ABCs just like the rest of us. Thankfully, we're born to learn. Slowly, surely, you stumble, slip, crawl, fall, and fail, and fall, frustrating, confusing, trying, struggling, until one day, you walk. One foot in front of the other. One idea on top of the next. Each wrong answer making your brain a little bit stronger. Failing is just another word for growing and you keep going. This is learning. Knowing that you'll get it even if you haven't gotten it yet. Because the most beautiful, complex concepts in the whole universe are built on basic ideas that anyone anywhere can understand. Whoever you are, wherever you are, you only have to know one thing, *you can learn anything.*
my first word when the video ended was, "really?" with a shaky disbelief voice, but strongly motivated! I wanna learn computers! I'm a 21 student who still doesn't understand basic computers. Because back then my aunt said angrily that I broke her computer which I didn't, and that makes me really scared to touch a computer after that. Now that I don't live in her house anymore, I should have bravery to learn and not shy even when I start very basic
Thanks Khan. Learn from our mistakes, don't be afraid to fail because failing is one of the ways we learn. Embrace it because once you have it you can change it.
Im hoping to learn things like video game design, programming, and other computer related stuff, but its extremely hard growing up in a county where most everyone is playing sports and your computer class just has windows xp computers with MIcrosoft office 2003. but so far I have been able to be mildly good at things like Photoshop, aftereffects, premiere, and somewhat dreamweaver. Though the condition im in is rough ill keep trying, thanks
+Nano Pixel Learn it on your own. It will be worth it :) My family is one that has been in the medical profession for generations. I went overboard and took up engineering. The materials and references we have are mostly for medicine, so I had to search for others. It took some effort for me to convince them that I need a computer since they did not use it as much. Keep learning and cheers ;)

Zakee Ulhaq This video is not about how long it takes a person to learn something, or even things that come naturally to you. This video is about anyone on this planet being able to learn anything. I notice you said that it took them longer to learn what you could, but you never said they didn't learn it.

Truly gifted kids are such a minority that they shouldn't even be a factor in your choice of whether or not you'll apply yourself to a particular discipline. I'm apparently "gifted". Ironically I was one of the rare kids that did nothing but study, train, compete during school and at the end of it all I get people that can't be bothered to apply themselves at all tell me I'm lucky because I'm gifted. Great stuff except gifted doesn't mean things automatically come to you with minimal effort.

I agree, but I fear that some people will misunderstand this and take it to mean you can do _anything_ at the same LEVEL as _anyone_ if you work as hard. If you want to reach expert level, in anything competitive, you need to start during the crucial early years of life. If you miss out (during early childhood) on learning related things about whatever you're looking to learn, then as an adult you're completely screwed (that is if you want to compete with those who didn't miss out). An adult who never dabbled in anything musical (or music related) as a kid, will _never_ reach the heights of someone picking it back up in adulthood, putting in the same hours/practice quality as you, let alone an expert performer who has been at it consistently since they were 2 years old. This is not just because of total time in practice hours (which is crucial), but because they missed those crucial formative years where you have the most free time you'll ever have in your life, your brain is primed for myelination, and your curiousity and sense of 'play' is at it's peak. You just can't compete with people who have had that kind of exposure (and they're abundant). Not only those lucky enough to have done all of that, but also those elite few who had the _best_ possible help, were financially able to afford to do it, had ultra supportive parents who sacrificed some of their own life for your pursuit, _and_ had regular access to peers, and mentors who were better than they were. That said, as an adult who missed this window, and had none of the advantages mentioned, you CAN still learn _almost_ anything, or at least learn it to a sufficiently competent level (whatever level that may be for you).
This video made me cry because it made me think wow I think I can really do this I think anything is possible I believe in myself I know I can do it feeling strong knowing that I learn slowly just got to take my time and think and think hard until you know you got to answer you know they could do it you know that anything is possible and though most importantly you can do it failing is another word for passing because the more you fail the more you learn the more you learn the better you get in the better you get you know everything is possible thank you Kane Academy

+Matciej But those that have natural talent also gain from hard work, just because you can beat a talented person that gives no effort doesn't mean you can beat a talented person that works just as hard as you.

Yea yea we can all learn to a certain extent. But let’s be real.... not all of us can actually be good at those things. We can all learn how to play basketball or learn coding but not all of us will be good at it. Which is why some of us feel less motivated and end up giving up. We can all learn whatever we want. We can all be whatever we want. But in the end it comes up to whether your good at it or not. And sometimes practice and hard work just doesn’t cut it. That how life is. Some of us just don’t make it to where we want to be and we have to accept that. Good video tho Khan academy. Good video

After growing up I finally realized I am much smarter than the norm. I want to tell everyone: don't be fooled by narrow minded fools out there! Don't let anyone let think you are dumb because you are not! Believe in yourself! You can make it!
You are |genius|
'Top 10 most inspiring speeches of all time'
Wait... I can?

Not only that, humans are social animals, we could be only be strong and intelligent if working with others

Soo relateable

Same bro. I too couldn't solve problems which I could have easily solved 4 years back
Holy cow, this is more inspirational than Shia LaBeouf.
People on this comment section are very pessimistic about human capabilities. It just shows how weak you guys are mentally. Believe in yourself and be confident. It will fundamentally change you into a better person!
This was beautiful, I feel inspired. I just started college and I am really struggling so thank you for this video, it really helped.
I can't appreciate this video enough. I'm going through a hard phase right now.. everything I thought I was good at, that identified me, I found people better than me at it. They can take away my victory, but they can never take away my capacity to learn.
I did NOT expect to cry from a Khan Academy video today

Sure, I can learn anything. But I can't learn everything, which sucks.
With you on that one... :/
Scias to know everything - is impossible, but I, cherishing my dream, would rather die trying.

ATIQ ALIM Check your Veritasium and his video on learned helplessness. It's really insipiring.
Nobody's born smart.
We all start at zero.
Can't talk, can't walk,
certainly can't do algebra.
Adding, reading, writing,
riding a bike,
nobody's good at anything at first.
There was a time when
Einstein couldn't count to 10
and Shakespeare had to learn his ABCs
just like the rest of us.
Thankfully, we're born to learn.
Slowly, surely, you stumble, slip, crawl,
fall, and fail, and fall,
frustrating, confusing,
trying, struggling,
until one day, you walk.
One foot in front of the other.
One idea on top of the next.
Each wrong answer making your
brain a little bit stronger.
Failing is just another word for growing
and you keep going.
This is learning.
Knowing that you'll get it
even if you haven't gotten it yet.
Because the most
beautiful, complex concepts
in the whole universe
are built on basic ideas
that anyone anywhere can understand.
Whoever you are, wherever you are,
you only have to know one thing,
*you can learn anything.*
my first word when the video ended was, "really?" with a shaky disbelief voice, but strongly motivated! I wanna learn computers!
I'm a 21 student who still doesn't understand basic computers. Because back then my aunt said angrily that I broke her computer which I didn't, and that makes me really scared to touch a computer after that. Now that I don't live in her house anymore, I should have bravery to learn and not shy even when I start very basic
go for it
Thanks Khan.
Learn from our mistakes, don't be afraid to fail because failing is one of the ways we learn. Embrace it because once you have it you can change it.
"Failing is just another word for growing and you keep going."
The best quote I heard since 2017 started. 👏

My family is one that has been in the medical profession for generations. I went overboard and took up engineering. The materials and references we have are mostly for medicine, so I had to search for others. It took some effort for me to convince them that I need a computer since they did not use it as much. Keep learning and cheers ;)
+Nano Pixel Let me guess, North Africa, South america or south east europe?
Idk why I come to watch this video again and again and everytime it gives me hope.
This video will never get old .... Truly inspiring 💕
The important thing is that everyone learns at different rates. Sure, maybe I can learn virtually any thing but how long it might take me?
I have read somewhere that to learn a specific trait requires about 20 hours of concentrated work..
It does not matter. It's not a race. What do you want to learn? What would you enjoy doing?
Einestein was in the right place at the right time, with the will to prevail. My experience making my own armor was that the first 20 hours will teach you so so much. !0,000 hours is how long it takes to become Einestein, or Tiger Woods,
Gytax0 There was a video on Ted I think about the 10,000 myth.
Zakee Ulhaq This video is not about how long it takes a person to learn something, or even things that come naturally to you. This video is about anyone on this planet being able to learn anything. I notice you said that it took them longer to learn what you could, but you never said they didn't learn it.
Been studying physics for a while now... Just need to practice more.

Not give up
Truly gifted kids are such a minority that they shouldn't even be a factor in your choice of whether or not you'll apply yourself to a particular discipline.

The most motivational video I have seen in my life .Thank you very much
I agree, but I fear that some people will misunderstand this and take it to mean you can do _anything_ at the same LEVEL as _anyone_ if you work as hard.
First I need to learn how to learn.

But those that have natural talent also gain from hard work, just because you can beat a talented person that gives no effort doesn't mean you can beat a talented person that works just as hard as you.

I'm leaving this comment so whenever someone likes this, i get reminded to watch it again.
I reminded you😁
Yea yea we can all learn to a certain extent. Good video
You said every mistake you do is a sign of growing. When am I going to stop growing???
