  • In this video, I put Oura to the test against…Oura. After owning my ring for nearly 2 years, I wanted to see if I was still getting my money’s worth from this sleep tracking device. So I bought a second one. And for the past few weeks, I’ve been wearing them side-by-side to see how the data compares.

    Really great to hear the final takeaway and the evaluation over all between the two. I think it's great you're being transparent to your followers for how you're growing and change your view on the technology/instruments you leverage.

      Thank you so much, Stephen! This was an especially humbling video for me to make because I do a lot of sleep experiments using data from my Oura ring and rely so heavily on it from day to day. And even though it's a phenomenal tech device, it still is tech at the end of the day...and the data shows it's not perfect. And so my biggest hope for people watching is that they can get the same benefit out of the lessons i've learned about the importance of listening to your body, not just the device when it comes to sleep!

    Did you switch up which hand the new ring was on? it would be interesting to see how alternating would effected the discrepancies. maybe what you are measuring is difference between your left and right side / or how the ring interprets the data from your left as oppose to right. it would be interesting to try out 2 new rings and test them on both sides.

    Maybe it can be in part because you bought the ring & tracked the first months. Oura does say that it takes a few months to learn your body so maybe after time they would sync up more. I noticed when I first got my Oura ring the calorie burn was higher & from memory deep &/or REM were consistently higher as well as readiness to begin with but then evened out after a few months. It could be more related to the learning period vs the established consistency.

      I feel you! It's hard to not see a bad score and let it impact your day. Easiest way (but takes some discipline) only check once a week!! Keep a log of the habits you do daily, but don't compare with your sleep results until the end of the week. Then at the end of the week you can look at correlations to habits. late night TV, late dinner, afternoon caffeine, exercise, meditation, etc. Then you can adjust. I think it's great to be obsessed with data! I certainly am! but it's not particularly healthy to be obsessed with daily data!

      it is indeed! one of the reasons I invested in the chilipad mattress cooler is because I noticed my temperature going up at night, which can be disruptive to sleep cycles. since buying the chili almost 2 years ago, i have seen the temperature stats on my oura ring lower as a result. but it's unclear how much ambient temperature the ring picks up, which could also be a factor at play here.

    I makes sense that for the calories and deep sleep the rings would have a lot of discrepancies, mainly because those are areas that have seen a lot of advancement in knowledge and tech, so if I was going to trust one more, it would be the newer one, but that's just me - and I agree whole heartedly that we shouldn't rely too deeply on these techs, they are a guideline, not an exact directive - great vid, Thanks!

      Bruce! So great to hear from you and happy to hear you got yours. how do you like it so far? i absolutely agree on wearing it on different hands may have caused some discrepancies and i tried to get that out early on in the video. ideally in a perfect experiment i would have 4 - two on one hand and two on the other but that would have been VERY expensive! but yes, this is definitely a factor to consider and i agree that my experiment is less than perfect, but maybe i'll switch the rings around (wear the new one on the right hand) and see if my results differ!

    My husband and I have the Oura rings and got them a little over two years ago. My rings battery started going down hill really quick so much that it wouldn't read my scores at night because the battery would die; this is with me charging it before bed. Keep in mind I keep my ring is on airplane mode except when its on the charger and I am syncing it. It has been inconsistent with charring and working for a while now. Now it's to the point where even if the battery is still decent when I wake up, it hasn't read my scores from the night before. This starting happening to husband also. His battery is still pretty strong so it makes no sense why the scores aren't being read. The solution they gave to my husband is a factory recent which did not work. Oura cannot answer any of my questions and has been a huge disappoint in customer service. They don't have solutions and are basically telling me that my ring is trash and I need a new one. They offer a $50 credit for a new one. After a lot of back and forth with Oura I assume that these devices have a two year life span and you shouldn't expect it to last longer than that and if it does you are lucky. We are both so disappointed, especially because we were part of the group that preordered and paid for the rings, fronted money to Oura when the next generation came out and waited 8 months to get our rings. We have recommended them to so many people and its such a bummer that they haven't lasted. When I first reached out they said my battery has gone bad and they were going to replace it under warranty. Then they realized I was a month over the 2 year warranty and they wouldn't budge. I like the device, but it is very expensive for a 2 year life span.

  • @fidrewe99
    @fidrewe99 3 роки тому

    I really wonder what is causing the discrepancy in sleep stages between the two rings!
    It SHOULDN'T be the software, as both rings should have the same version of the software running.
    As the reference temperature for the ring is your average anyway, the offset between the two rings should not matter. The correlation between the two is still high and cannot explain the difference in REM time.
    However, in general the fact that temperature and heart rate are average values over the whole night, it might well be that one of the rings is better at picking up changes of those quantities than the other, as it's the changes that are relevant for the estimation of sleep stages.
    Did you have the rings on different hands? That might also explain the differenceand of course this will affect your activity scores.

      Despite my many problems with the Oura ring… heart rate has been pretty accurate for me. Perhaps it’s too loose?

    The need to do a cross-over test and swap rings between hands is the obvious shortcoming here, and might change your interpretations.
    I see a few other people have commented on the same thing. Have you completed this testing?
    Some of the things you label as "old vs new" could be "left vs right", and no the bias would not necessarily be constant.
    Welcome to the wonderful world of trying to gather and analyse useful data!

    Hmm, interesting video. My assumption is that the differences in the sleep stages might be due to your arms moving independently. I'm sure you know that no commercial grade sleep tracker can actually "measure" what sleep stage you're in (maybe Dreem can since it has electrodes?) since they can't measure your brain waves. It's best guess based on whatever proprietary algorithm the company developed to interpret all the sensor data and make a "best guess" at what sleep stage you're likely in.

      Exactly. I think you're right. That's why I think nightly metrics have to be taken with a grain of salt. I still love the oura ring but no longer trust it to accurately identify my REM and deep sleep on a nightly basis. I still wear it to track sleep and wake times, total hours and temperature.

      @@katie_moore My Oura ring is arriving today!
      There's a few sleep experts who have said that sleep tracker data is still accurate relative to itself. Like when you compare your sleep data against itself. The absolute values are likely wrong, but the relative values are still relevant (i.e. I slept better today relative to yesterday etc).

      Exactly. Glad it’s arriving today!! Have fun! Even if it’s inaccurate it’s very fun to track and learn from your data!

    it probably would have been appropriate to follow instructions. Place ring on index finger. The other fingers a not as accurate.

    Interesting maybe you should trust your old one, after I left that comment, I found this, from 2 months ago, where a scientist compares the data from the Oura ring to an EEG - very interesting!! ua-cam.com/video/I2pm3bzCuCg/v-deo.html

    Hi. Thank you for this video! I'm new to this channel and I've seen you for the first time. You are a beautiful woman, if I may say. Honestly think that. Your face radiates just such a wonderful beauty!
    But as far as I can see from this video, you are worried a lot about your health. And I just ask myself if you are aware of your issue with your bodyweight? Maybe you are,if so, sorry for writing this. If not, just a short comment : you'd look even more beautiful if you'd simply just put on some kilograms, be the woman you deserve to be and enjoy some more food and other things than workout and healthobsession. and therefore reduce your mental worriedness about your health. Anorexia is a real big issue and I think that's point nr.1 that you got to be worried about and should try to fix, also when wanting to tell people about health in general. But,maybe that's all clear, and you tell in other videos. If so, sorry for this once again!
    Blessings to you , beautiful woman.

    So take the results with a grain of salt,,, But they still want $500AUD... You can buy a premium smart watch for the same price with the same features and more.. So I'm definitely not buying an Oura ring until their results are accurate and the premium price drops to something more affordable!!

    • @katie_moore
      @katie_moore  3 роки тому

      that's totally fair and the reason I made this video! I want people to decide what's worth it for them. So far I haven't found a smartwatch that is more accurate than the oura ring for sleep.. However I'm very hopeful the Fitbit Sense could replace my Oura ring! Stay tuned for that review coming up!

      @@katie_moore Yes I was hopeful on the Fitbit Sense aswell but there is a few reviews where they are saying that it's not completely accurate either unfortunately. I don't mind spending a few hundred dollars on something that has more things accurate than telling the time but when it's only the time that is accurate I honestly can't see the point. Here in Australia the Fitbit Sense has a $500 price tag. Reliability vs price just doesn't weigh up in my book.. Really hoping that something does come out soon that can say that it does what it claims. By the way,,, I hope you don't mind my saying but damn your a beautiful woman!! 😍👍👍
