71 year old geezer here. I’ve had the Oura Ring GEN 3 for one year. The only time I take it off is when I charge it. I think the ring is FANTASTIC. It gives me terrific information that I rely upon daily. I’d be lost without it. 😉
My ring sizer kit will arrive tomorrow. I’m up there, too, at 64 and I’m very active. I want all the tools I can get toward a better quality of life. Thanks for your comment.
@@GwenMotoGirl Good luck, Gwen! One month short of 2 years with the ring. Still magnificent. One thing to mention: if you do weight training, be careful. The knurling on a barbell and dumbbell will scratch the surface of the ring. Wear gloves. 😉
I have the Gen 3. I love the ring, but hate the subscription. After 1 year the battery life is down to 2.5 days. I would be glad to pay for a subscription if part of it was paying for my next ring upgrade.
@@hdtravel1 its not free they already have your 300 bucks. Ultrahuman, ringcom, samsung doesn't have subscriptions, I'm sure they're going out of business sure.
I’ve been thinking of getting an Oura ring for a while, so I’ve watched a lot of reviews. Yours is one of my favorites! Very informative and love the editing ☺️
Thank you so much! I always watch a TON a reviews before making a purchase as well. Happy to answer any specific follow-up questions to help you make your decision. :)
I have had the Amazon Halo since it came out. I loved it because it was accurate (especially the sleep data), inexpensive, easy to ignore, and the battery lasted days. With Amazon no longer supporting Halo, I was looking for an even more discrete alternative. Ordered Oura yesterday and waiting for a sizing kit!!!
Love the review. I also have the oura 3. They do mention that the battery life is shorter than 7 days if you have the oxygen meter on. Personally I make it till day 7. But I don't keep Bluetooth on, don't use the oxygen tracker, don't use the location tracker and only sync 1 time a day in the morning with natural Cycle and then look at the data from the day and night before
Hey Robin. Congratulations on your engagement, what a smart idea for a ring! Your fiance is a genius! I've owned the Oura Gen 2 and upgraded to Oura Gen 3. l work in the sleep industry, I actually sell mattresses. I am also an athlete, (a keen cyclist). I needed the Oura ring to manage performance and recovery. I also wanted to know all about my sleep patterns etc. My Readiness and Sleep scores have improved (as I became more disciplined, in order to get better sleep). Although all the metrics are highly individualized, I would like to see my friends, family metrics within the app (a feature not been made available since it's conception - which is a CON). If made available, it would encourage more conversation or support to get back on track....some people need to be reminded to take a break or to try and focus on sleep etc. Take driving for example, in extreme cases of fatigue, this can be the difference of someone making it from point A to point B, versus not making it at all!. I could go on......but I should not write a novel! If you reach out to me, I am happy to discuss with you further.....all the best!
What a great comment! Thanks for sharing your ideas. I actually agree that if there was a selective social feature (so I could share with family for example) it might encourage me to stay on track even more. I’ve been going to bed too late recently! Thanks for this great reminder!
I visit the OURA website every once in a while and just boldly forwarded this video to my bf. Hopefully he'll get me an oura ring as an engagement ring, too. 😇 This is SUCH a sweet gesture and so useful as well! I'm mostly interested in heartrate, activity levels and the body temperature measurements for fertility reasons.
I returned mine after a week. It was HORRIBLY inaccurate. It thought I was asleep just for laying still. It would report I was asleep and even in DEEP sleep on days that I had insomnia and was up until 2 hours after it said I started sleeping. Support escalated my ticket at my request till I reached the higher levels and they basically admitted that my ring is not malfunctioning and the product is not accurate, but customers should be alright with that.
Thanks for sharing your experience!! Definitely something important to consider. I’ve gotten a lot of benefits from general “rough” tracking (I’m more motivated to prioritize sleep and have a log of how I’ve generally slept over the course of many months). So I suppose high resolution accuracy hasn’t been a major need for me personally. But I think it’s important people are aware of this! I also benefit a lot from the body temp/ period tracker which was something I didn’t scout the ring for but has been a nice plus. Seems to be in sync with my body. Have you found a more accurate alternative? Would love to know what other options you’re exploring.
@@anthoniusbende1317It is worse than that, access to YOUR data is hidden behind a paywall and who knows who has access to it. I hope they go out of business.
Thank you Rachel! 🥰 ps: I have been walking palms forward every morning and am seeing a massive difference in my arms and posture. 🙏The appreciation is mutual. ✨
I replaced my wedding ring with an ENSO ring, yeah, that was not a popular choice for everyone in my family. I then replaced that ENSO ring with an ŌURA Ring generation 2.0. It has been a good 700 days later and... Yeah, oh yeah, wearing an ŌURA Ring to bed is the best way to track sleep and learn more about my sleep habits. I just love wearing a smart ring. I would like the battery life to be 15 days though. If ŌURA increased the weight by three times and allowed me to charge the wearable twice a month - oh yes, that would be epic. Nice video, "The Science of Self-Care" and I subscribed.
Thanks for sharing! The most important thing is that you are happy with your “smart” wedding ring. :) I totally agree with you on the weight tradeoff for a longer battery life. That would be ideal.
The subscription is a new cost introduced with the Gen 3 ring. I’ve heard that if you buy a second-hand Gen 2 model you can avoid paying the subscription cost. From an FAQ on the Oura website: “Gen2 users will not be charged a monthly membership fee, and we'll continue to support the Gen2 ring..”
Ow my congratulations for your engagement! I discover your videos today and this is the third one, I appreciate your Chanel and love the idea to have one ring to trac everything. I use a thermometer for my cycle and a band for steps basically, and have everything in one place looks a really smart idea, and no scream!!! I am having a pretty ruff year and struggling to back to my old form, sleep is an issue and after start to walk at least 5k steps a day have some positive effects so far. I hope you channel grow, thanks you for sharing your discoveries.
Congratulations on your engagement. Have you looked into circadian rhythm for better sleep? I used to have horrible sleep habits. No i sleep 9ish pm and wake at or before 430am and it's been life changing. I alway endeavor to get the first 15 minutes of sunlight in my eyes most days.
@@asanta2023 definitely not. I work in an industry that requires me to know about radiation emissions and the oura ring is absolutely not harmful at all
Hey! Just got my ring today. I am excited because I feel like is a good device to track everything in one place. I wear a Garmin for running/strength training, an Apple (which also does some tracking but short battery life) and sometimes I want to wear my fancy watch. I don't like to wear a watch when I sleep. So while the Oura ring may not be as accurate for my running data, I still will have that via my Garmin. I'm hoping Oura will help me manage stress better!
Hi Robin! Your video review of Oura ring is very helpful. Great presentation and very thorough evaluation of its Pros and Cons. Thanks so much for helping me assess its potential. I work a lot with Lucid Dreaming and Dream Yoga. So my interest was piqued in Oura to know and understand the quality and state of sleep and dream states better. I have not yet decided on spending yet, but will definitely look at Oura now, thanks to your review.
I slept pretty poorly last night and I’ve been really tired today. So that sleep tracking stuff sounds intriguing. It would be really interesting to compare my own intuition about my sleep quality to the data.
Love that idea. I’m sure your intuition is pretty spot on. That said, certain things (like how many minutes it takes you to fall asleep) are harder to perceive yourself.
Sleep Metrics Total Sleep is the time spent in bed when you were actually asleep. A restful night’s sleep for most people ranges from 6 to 9 hours. What counts is how rested you feel and making small improvements. Time to Sleep is the time elapsed between starting a sleep recording and actually falling asleep. The time to sleep field in the app is populated when you use manual sleep recording. Light sleep: Light sleep is the least restorative of the sleep stages, but important because it often comprises up to about half of total sleep. It is easiest to wake up during this stage of sleep. The body processes memories and emotions, and metabolism is regulated during light sleep. REM sleep: Sleep occurs in waves, with a crest called REM (rapid eye movement) when we dream. REM sleep provides energy to the brain and body, and supports daytime performance and cognition. The proportion of REM sleep in each sleep cycle generally increases during the second half of the night. Deep sleep: Sleep occurs in waves, with a trough called deep sleep when we are in maximum recovery mode. During deep sleep, blood pressure drops, breathing may become slightly slower, and muscles are relaxed as tissue growth and repair occurs and energy is restored. A higher proportion of deep sleep occurs during the first half of the night. Awake Time displays the cumulative amount of time during your sleep recording that was spent awake. Wake-ups displays the number of awake events you experienced during your sleep. If they are short, you may not remember them. Up to 3 to 5 awake events is quite normal - with young children or pets, some people experience several awake events each night. Sleep Quality metric is an indicator of your overall sleep quality. It ranges from 0 to 100 typically, with values up to 110 possible for exceptional nights. Total sleep is the most important factor, with sleep efficiency, time spent in different sleep phases, and number of wake-ups contributing as well. A good goal for yourself is a consistent sleep quality metric of 75 or higher. Sleep Efficiency is the percentage of time spent sleeping. For example, spending 8 hours in bed and 6 of those hours asleep yields a sleep efficiency of 75%. With a sleep efficiency of 85% or higher, you are doing well. Percentage of Sleep Goal: Set your initial sleep goal at a realistic time for you - small incremental wins are empowering. Adjust your sleep goal in the app by going to Menu > Sleep Goals & Schedule. Average Breathing Rate is the number of breaths you take per minute. For healthy individuals between age 16 and 65, resting respiratory rate between 10-22 breaths per minute are considered normal. Average Heart Rate represents the average value in beats per minute over the duration of your sleep recording. A heart rate between 40 and 85 is considered healthy. There are multiple alternative rings available, without subscription requirements. Equally precise. All focusing on sleep tracking. Please mention these. For exercise sport watches are the better choice.
@@MississippiJapan Ultrahuman and RingConn have been available for a while and have great reviews. Personally, I do not have one yet. The coming next generation of smart rings promises to measure also blood pressure (for example Muse Ring One, Velia Smart Ring). I am waiting for the Velia ring, also because it will be much slimmer and more elegant than all other smart rings.
Congratulations on the engagement. I use a miband, it was cheap and the algorithm isn't that good on it but it does track sleep duration accurately. The best tip I suggest for sleep is doing CO2 training (like co2 tables but not those) and breath holding. Vagus nerve yoga techniques help too but CO2 was the best for me.
Interesting! Would love to read more about this. The only breath work I currently practice is a style in which you inhale for two long breathes and exhale for one quick breath. It’s super energizing.
@@TheScienceofSelfCare I was watching yogabody and some other channels talking about it. I found CO2 tables from spearfishing. The main idea is CO2 saturation paradoxically increases oxygen availability, which is both energizing and relaxing. :)
I like the idea of the Oura & it was recently suggested as a fertility tracker but I have major issue with paying hundreds of dollars for a tool then being forced to pay a monthly subscription on top of that to actually use the tool. If I buy a $350 tool that I know will need to be replaced in roughly 2yrs I object to paying another $120 just to use it, maybe if like another comment said that that amount is credited to your next device but not just because the company wants more money.
I used to worry about the screen time on my phone...I cured that by removing all social media apps and most notifications. Now my phone is just a useful tool...not a distraction.

Need for a subscription + probably no good option to replace weared out battery is no go for me sadly. Its has nice look and it would be way better to track sleep than watches that are usually getting in a way / are too heavy/cluncky to forget about them when you are trying to sleep but this technology still needs more time to be in a good spot. Im looking forward how it will develop in 5-10 years.
@@TheScienceofSelfCare Hard to say I love them per say but I have some ... way back when they were not that widely available I was even trying to make my own but technology development was faster and I did run out of memory of microcontroller I was planning to use so I had moved on and got my Galaxy Gear S3 with my phone upgrade. I like them design wise and mostly use them to controll music player on phone wile traveling without need to get the phone from pocket ... very convenient :) ... then I have here Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 I got for work (did some programming to sync health data for pacient to medical software for orientational purposes or so) - they are very simple design wise but as they are lighter and smaller I was able to sleep with them few times to test sleep monitoring and they have more health oriented sensors as they are much newer. Also technically I guess that Pokeball Plus from Nintendo is also wearable I used to play with - it had some interesting game functions but as there were some inventory caps in place it stopped to be that convenient to quickly do stuff without need to manage it in app anyways .. still interesting piece of technology :) ... Im looking forward to see what future brings.
I have had my Oura ring for over one year now. The pros is the look, the durability and the functionality. Its amazing for what it does and I am no doctor or scientist but I feel everything is pretty accurate to my lifestyle. The scores really push me to do better everyday ( steps, calories and sleep) The ONE con is the subscription!! Idk but although I love what it does I just can't justify $6 a month more in this world of subscriptions for everything we all live in. Once you stop paying for Oura subscription you really do not have much functionality with your ring other than style?
@@tellmechris88 thanks for sharing! yes-I also have subscription fatigue! Generally, I am willing to spend money on my health if something actually influences my behavior for the better. Like you, the oura stats do motivate me to prioritize my sleep and rest, so I am willing to spend the 6 bucks a month. :)
I currently wear the Oura Gen 2 & ordered a gen 3 that I'm considering cancelling because of the subscription. I'm 65 & purchased the gen 2 on the advise of my Dr. who also wore one at the time.
Had my Oura ring Gen 3 for less than six months. Worked well, but when I had to transfer data to a new device, that's when trouble started. Sync problems, very slow customer service that didn't really read my emails because they kept giving me the same instructions. And when they did provide different sets of instructions, none of them worked. I can't get it to sync. They sent a replacement ring (could very well be refurbished), and it doesn't work either. So here I am, 6 months later with 2 nice looking rose gold rings. Neither of which are working.
Program to Correct the Architecture of Sleep: Redefining Sleep Medicine Sleep is a vital process that plays a critical role in promoting health and well-being. However, for many people, sleep disruptions are a common occurrence that can interfere with their daily lives. Parasomnias are a type of sleep disorder that disturbs the architecture of sleep, leading to abnormal behaviors, movements, and sensations during sleep. With the advent of the Program to Correct the Architecture of Sleep, a new era of sleep medicine has dawned, which is changing the way parasomnias are treated. The program involves a series of non-medical interventions that aim to normalize the sleep architecture of individuals suffering from parasomnias. The interventions are based on the latest advances in sleep research, including neuroimaging, polysomnography, and novel natural therapies. The program is a more comprehensive and personalized approach to treating parasomnias and is tailored to the individual needs of each patient. One of the primary components of the program is neuroimaging, which allows clinicians to visualize the brain's activity during sleep. Neuroimaging methods, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), provide insight into the brain's neural networks that control sleep. This information is crucial in identifying abnormalities that contribute to parasomnias. By identifying the specific neural circuits that are disrupted, clinicians can design targeted therapies to correct the underlying pathology. Polysomnography is another essential component of the program. It is a non-invasive test that records several physiological parameters, including brain waves, eye movements, muscle activity, and breathing patterns. This test provides valuable information on the duration and quality of sleep, as well as the presence of parasomnias. Using this data, clinicians can adjust the program to optimize the patient's sleep architecture and minimize the occurrence of parasomnias. The program also involves novel natural therapies that target the specific neurotransmitter systems involved in parasomnias. These therapies are designed to enhance the inhibitory neurotransmission in the brain, reducing the activity of the neural circuits that cause parasomnias. Examples of these therapies include supplements that enhance the activity of the GABAergic system, which is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. In conclusion, the Program to Correct the Architecture of Sleep is an innovative approach to treating parasomnias that is changing the landscape of sleep medicine. By combining neuroimaging, polysomnography, and non-invasive therapies, the program provides a personalized and comprehensive treatment plan that optimizes sleep architecture and minimizes the occurrence of parasomnias. This program is an exciting development in sleep research, as it brings precision therapies to the field and opens up new avenues for research and discovery. Got the gen 2 when I started running longer miles which initially neg. Impacted my sleep, then upgraded to the gen 3 upon release to take advantage of free lifetime membership. The battery died, and I had to brow beat them to sending me a new one, which they did. Actually, I can’t remember if it was the GEN two or the GEN three that died but one of them died. I wish it recorded the sleep data without having to open the app everyday. I would say a pro is it has gotten me to pay attention to my sleep. Not sure I upgrade when this dies.
I'm interested in getting an Oura Ring. I've used watches in the past (different ones, Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, FitBit Charge 3+5), and.. I don't jive with any of them really. The FitBits die on me after only 1-1.5yrs it seems, and the others need to be charged every 1-1.5 days! >.< Great video, thanks for the honest reviews and opinions! And.. CONGRATS ON THE ENGAGEMENT!
Congratulations! This is such a dream. I definitely want an Oura engagement ring too! 😍 So much comfortable than smart watches/bands. Plus it tackles a more hollistic and wellness approach compared to other smart devices, specifically the Apple watch which is better for activity. Hope you get protection from OSleeve too, to take care of your engagement ring as well.
This was helpful! I’m wondering if you would be open to making a video on using the ring as a period tracker and how it can track your monthly cycle?? If it does???
Thanks Sofia! The Oura ring is a great period tracker because it tracks body temperature, which fluctuates across the menstrual cycle. It’s really cool to follow along. ✨ I also know Natural Cycles-which is an app that helps you track your fertility-is now compatible with the Oura ring. So I think the period tracking possibilities are improving quickly! Other apps/companies are starting to integrate Oura ring data and Oura is also continually updating its own software. 🙌
I thought on paper the Oura ring looked amazing. After digging through all the pros and cons though, I can't figure out why anyone would actually want this ring. The ring itself is a very simplistic tracker found in most cheap devices today. It will not function without an app (no LCD or any indicator lights on it), it needs constant charging which means it is not on your finger tracking metrics and worse of all, for some reason it requires a monthly payment to function... WHY ?!? Save yourself the headache and get a $30 bracelet that the battery last three times as long, doesn't require a cell phone and certainly doesn't require a monthly membership. However, if you are one of those people who love over paying for something not everyone has, constnatly have a cell phone in your hand, love believing guessed at metrics, enjoy monthly subscriptions, and love having 10 chargers on your nightstand, go for it!
I would not recommend Oura ring. After using Oura ring for more than 2 years I don’t think that this device is good value for your money. The battery lifespan is ~ 1 year, after my first ring battery died and after innumerable emails with Oura poor customer support team I got a replacement. ~1 year later the same problem happened and they do not provide any guarantee for it. If you consider the total cost and the membership on top you can get much better metrics and insights from many latest generation devices in the market and with better accuracy
Thank you for sharing! I have been thinking of getting one just because I do not like wearing things on my wrist-- large watches, or fitbits. Can you wear this on any finger?
Oura recommends wearing it on your index finger as that’s the finger it was designed to be used on. I wear it on my ring finger because it’s more comfortable for me there and it seems to work well and measure my sleep perfectly fine. :) I think the most important thing is that your ring fits well because the little LED nodules need to make contact with your skin.
I was thinking about buying 1, however, soon as i learned i have to pay for a subscription. I lost my urge to buy one. To pay for such an expensive tracker and still have to pay for an apps is not acceptable
I agree. Initially I didn’t think the subscription price was that bad, but just the fact that it’s an ongoing cost is definitely a turn-off. A little trick I have heard: apparently if you buy a secondhand Generation 2 ring, then it works without a subscription since the subscription was only introduced with the Gen 3 ring.
@TheScienceofSelfCare wow, that's good to know, but I wonder if it has all the features. I have garmin, and I love it, but wearing 24/7 and it give my wrist a rash sometimes, goes the same for Samsung i used to own as well, so I thought it's good to have a ring to switch out sonetimes
Watching your video is part of helping my decision whether or not to buy one. It seems based on what I've read and seen, it is something that I plan to purchase.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the Oura Ring! I have previously used a Samsung Galaxy watch and currently have a Garmin, but I've started really looking into the Oura Ring. I feel like wearing these watches has made me more dependent on screens and constant alerts. I just took a cruise and disconnecting for the week was the most amazing feeling. That was 3 weeks ago and I haven't worn my Garmin since. I am a terrible sleeper and all reviews point to the Oura Ring as the best sleep tracker. I'm hoping to get the process started on ordering this week! I'm just torn on the color. Can't decide if I want Silver or Stealth... :)
The fact that the oura ring has no screen is one of the most underrated benefits in my opinion! While it’s tracking you can still feel totally “unplugged”. I personally love my silver ring, but have seen all the colors in real life and they are all seriously beautiful. Which one will match your wardrobe best? ;)
@@TheScienceofSelfCare Yes! That's exactly what I'm looking for. As for my wardrobe, that part is pretty flexible. I keep thinking along the lines of going well with the other jewelry I wear. My wedding ring is white gold and I tend to wear more silver than any other metal, but I also sometimes wear rose gold and gold rings. I know mixing metals isn't as big a deal as it used to be, but that habit of matching is hard to break. Ha! The Stealth would definitely go with a lot and give me a little more freedom with the other rings I wear. 🙃
@@TheScienceofSelfCare Haha. Maybe not....I ended up going for the silver. I think my goal is my index finger on my left hand. Silver will go best with my wedding ring. 🤣
I am very interested in something like this for a 16 year old non-verbal autistic boy. Can this be used without him having a phone? I can be the one checking the data randomly while he could be miles away at school for example?
Usually you have to hold the phone close to your ring to “upload” the data. So from afar, you would only be able to check what has been uploaded. Otherwise you will need him to be in close proximity to the phone to update the data. Hope this helps!
With this ring, you’re not only making a commitment to your partner, but to your health! I love that. This is a little late but I hope you’re still using it, and hopefully in happily married/soon to be married bliss!
I ordered the wrong size as a gift. Since I did an exchange as a result, Oura now refuses to allow a return even though the new ring is not working properly. 😢
Do you wear the ring on your ring finger or on the suggested index finger? I'm wondering if that effects the difference in steps between Oura and Apple.
That shouldn’t make a different because the oura ring estimates activity using a 3D accelerometer that’s inside the ring (different than how it measures other things like heart rate). Here’s what Oura says about it: “By using a 3D accelerometer, the Oura Ring is able to measure the movement of your hand to estimate whole-body activity (physical activity) and leg movement (step count).”
@@hlcwilson that’s a nice hypothesis, though a lot of people also report Oura undercounting their steps. I think it’s safe to say that “step counting” is not Oura’s strong suit and if steps are extremely important to someone, they should consider a different device. My iPhone seems to be pretty accurate, but it does require me having it on my body at all times. :)
I’ve been looking for something to track my sleep and came across this ring by accident. As longtime sufferer of insomnia I think I’ve found my tracker. It’ll give data on weather or not meds are working etc
Hi, thanks for the review and congratulations on your engagement. I’m looking to get this ring to track my sleep. My question is do you have to set in your ideal sleep time of when you would like to be in bed or it’s smart enough to actually know when you go to sleep and tracks it?
New subscriber here. Love your content and delivery. 👍I’m a terrible sleeper and I am seriously considering this. Congratulations on your engagement, although this was 6 + months ago and you’re probably married by now. If I’m correct, congratulations to you both.
Welcome!! Thank you for the kind words and wishes. 🙏 We’re not married yet! I’m still happily wearing my oura ring. ✨ Please let me know if there’s any content you would love to see or topics you’re specifically interested in. :)
I only learned about the Oura ring yesterday, and now I want one so bad! My sleep is a mess, and I mean it is truly ruining my life, so I was looking for a tracker... What puts me off is the subscription cost, it does add up, to an already expensive purchase :/ Also I understand it doesn't have a feature to wake you up at the right moment in your sleep cycle, and I am interested in that as I feel like a zombie no matter how much sleep I get (unless I get to sleep the hours I want which are not compatible with an office job...).
I’m thinking to get one for my bf working in aviation industry. He normally had very bad sleep, wake up multiple times. He already owns an apple watch so I’m considering if the Oura ring would help? Also how do you feel about the “readiness” level whether it had ever brought you down when you saw the score so low? Love you video anw.
Not to be pessimistic, but what happens when your Oura ring's battery dies out (inevitable, after a few years) and you need a replacement? It's your engagement ring, so will you continue wearing it despite it no longer being functional in addition to a new one?
Haha that’s not pessimistic, it’s realistic! I’m not super attached to material possessions. So I will probably just get a real wedding band and call it a day. :)
But maybe the sleep tracker is not accurate either. You know The step tracker is not accurate because you can count your steps but how do you know the sleep tracker is accurate?
That’s a very good point! The body temperature seems to be pretty accurate as well as period tracking, which are things I can more easily validate. I have noticed that sometimes it categorizes deep meditation in bed (which I do in the morning) as light sleep, but for the rest it seems to match up with my experiences. For example, sleep latency (how long it takes you to fall asleep) seems to generally reflect how long it felt it took me to fall asleep. If I wake up in the night to pee, it will show that. I do know there have been Oura ring heart rate comparisons to medical ECG and it was found to be highly accurate. Other elements may indeed be less accurate, hard for me to know. For me personally, I have still benefited from the information even if it’s giving me rough sleep trends because I have no higher resolution alternative.
10:06 Ick, cloud subscriptions for software I could easily write myself, if they just exposed the SDK. The technology looks worth it, but the business model (like printer ink) is distasteful.
I just got my ring today so excited! Love your review, I read that after wearing the ring for 4 days it will give you the most accurate information also I just read that we shouldn't let the ring run out of battery and don't overcharge it either. What do you think about the first 4 days?
Unfortunately, you lost me at "subscription". I feel like I get all the same data with my Garmin Swim 2 and the Garmin Connect app. Thank you for the review!
For me, it's only worth it if you're actively diagnosing and treating sleep issues. Working on my sleep hygiene and trying to work on apnea without the evil CPAP, it's invaluable. It's what prompted my demand of a sleep study from my Dr. when they didn't think I needed one because they thought I was too in shape to have apnea. The ring was very annoying and in the way with my vertical mouse, so I couldn't wear it while working. It's a little fragile, so I wouldn't wear it while working out or doing yard work, camping, hiking, etc. I just let my iphone count my steps. My ring literally just sits on my nightstand except when I sleep. I pay like $6 a month, no biggie. But when it dies, I won't get a new one. I may go the Garmin Watch route so it doubles for hiking, GPS/maps, etc. so I'll use it more than just for sleep.
It does suggest ideal bedtimes and I believe you can adjust different preferences / goals. I personally aim for 8 hours each night and this (or work) determines my wake-up time. Through oura I’ve learned that I generally sleep closer to 7 ish hours… even if I’m laying in bed for longer!
Hey, thanks for your question! In all honesty, I use it less for sleep tracking now. At this point, I feel like I understand how to get a good night of sleep. So I still wear it, but it’s not always charged. I also use it more when I do mini sleep experiments on myself. In the future, when I start trying to conceive, I will be using this A LOT because it’s very helpful to track your body temperature / cycle. How are you liking the gen 4??
I disagree - my iPhone and Oura are in lock step - It also calculates step equivalency yoga , strength training - no other wearable has the flexibility - it’s HRV is accurate Oura also has nice meditation and best hint exercises
Thanks for sharing! Did you connect your oura to your Apple health data? That could be why they are in lock step? When filming this, I hadn’t connected them. So I’m curious if it will be more accurate now!
From my limited research, I think heart rate variability (HRV) - which can be a proxy for stress - is relatively accurate with Oura. Blood oxygen is not clinical grade but also seems relatively good compared to other wearables.
I've been thinking of getting one for a while now, becauase i don't wanna wear a sports tracker watch all the time, as i'm more into luxurary watches. So i'm just about to press the button on the order, and you vid helped with the decision :D
Pay a company to buy a product and then pay the same company a subscription to collect your health and travel data and I presume they are free to sell that on. oh yes where do i sign up?
No gadget that costs more than 300 euro and ALSO charges you a monthly subscription just to access the app is worth it. Total rip off. Either you charge for the ring or for the app. Both of them is just mercenary behaviour.
It gives you recommendations like “take it easier today because your body temperature is up” etc. …but I usually ignore recommendations from devices because I’m stubborn and like to decide things for myself. So I mainly use it to collect info for self-learning. ☺️
Was looking into this and none of the reviews talk about the pedometer. I stopped using the Garmin Lily as it’s step counter kept counting steps whilst on the bus and in camper. Shame the oura’s pedometer isn’t good, the only thing stopping me from buying it.
So I ran out to BestBuy and got one yesterday! I guess it will take some days to get a baseline and I definitely got the wrong size for my index finger and have to wear on the middle finger - not the end of the world. When sizing, you have to bend your finger to see the "fatter" fit. All that red and green blinking at night, I just put it on airplane mode but don't know if that stopped it cuz I fell asleep.
@@catherineknight1660 wow!! Quick update! I wear my on my ring finger and it still measures perfectly :) in airplane mode the ring still collects and stores data, you just have to take it off airplane mode to sync it with your phone ✨
@@TheScienceofSelfCare Found out my fingers sometimes swell later in the day, so the ring fits a little tighter. Also, depending on what I'm doing, might want a tighter fit, especially in water related activities. I'm getting the hang of it! Thanks for your attention and support!
@@catherineknight1660 Nice! Though Oura suggests using it on the index finger, I’ve found it works fine on all fingers. Personally having a tiny bit of wiggle room has been most comfortable for me. My ring is not super tight, never falls off, and still gets the measurements. You can also experiment with different hands because my hands are not symmetrical in ring size haha. Once you have your favorite finger I would try to keep it on that finger so that you get consistency across your measurements. Enjoy!!
These latest rings, have a way to go, con their like a gym membership if you use them great if not just a waste of hard earned money. Life span of a wearable battery is limited, I guess 😊you just have to buy a new ring when they fail? If you weight lift this ring will get crushed for sure where a watch won't.
I am not sure how much your ring size will change but if it changes drastically maybe you can contact Oura? I feel they owe customers great customer service since they charge a monthly subscription.
Great question! No, it’s not necessary. In fact, Oura suggests wearing it on the index finger. I’ve also seen people wear it on the middle finger. The key is that the ring fits well on your finger so it can read your heart rate / body temp / etc.
Nice! My husband of two months just surprised me with it last week O am waking up hot a lot and concerned about my sleep. I do love it so far but the apple watch, i’m just a big fan and f it too because of my workouts. I’m walking and wearing it now so here it goes! I am happy to finally have a sleep tracker!
sounds great, but only if you are totally health gonzo focused. I couldn't/wouldn't justify the cost for the app. I'd rather pay waaay more for the ring upfront - this paying for app culture - to me - is overdone, just like tipping. I can definitely afford to do this but refuse on principal. it's too bad because this ruins a perfectly great concept making it unattainable for many people. sure when you are not paying for too many things i suppose this can be justified but it's my pressure point in the world of useless subscriptions - everyone wants money, when does it end? i wish i could time travel back in time when you actually bought products one time and they actually lasted for 30 plus years instead of this useless throw away culture.
71 year old geezer here. I’ve had the Oura Ring GEN 3 for one year. The only time I take it off is when I charge it. I think the ring is FANTASTIC. It gives me terrific information that I rely upon daily. I’d be lost without it. 😉
Love this! It’s pretty magical how much info this tiny little band can relay. Thanks for sharing Zane. 💫
@@TheScienceofSelfCare My pleasure, Robin. You have a great channel! Keep up the terrific work! 👍👏
@@Zane_Zaminsky thanks for the advice! I do lift heavy and I usually wear gloves, so I’ll definitely do that. Anything else to add?
I have the Gen 3. I love the ring, but hate the subscription. After 1 year the battery life is down to 2.5 days. I would be glad to pay for a subscription if part of it was paying for my next ring upgrade.
Companies need to charge subscriptions to be sustainable and stay in business - there is no free ride buddies !!!!
@@hdtravel1 Sure, but make it a large enough charge to be a payment toward the next ring.
@@hdtravel1 its not free they already have your 300 bucks. Ultrahuman, ringcom, samsung doesn't have subscriptions, I'm sure they're going out of business sure.
Thanks for that review! When you mentioned that it's not really accurate in measuring physical activity, that did it for me. Really helpful!
Exciting! Never heard much about the Amazon Halo. If accurate sleep tracking is important to you, Oura is the perfect next option. :) enjoy!
I’m doing the same thing because of the halo. I loved it and I don’t think I want to go back to the Apple Watch

Thanks for the alternative. I could never get the oura ring because it is definitely not priced to be accessible for everyone.
@@TheScienceofSelfCareFitbit has this!
Aww this makes my day! I agree- I think a health gadget is nicer than a stone hahaha
@@TheScienceofSelfCare yes inaccurate... just a funny gadget... with a subscription to it.. hmmm

Wow I had no clue about the subscription. That is a definite con for me.

Sounds like a great duo! Oura can definitely help you prioritize and improve your sleep (which impacts stress management). Enjoy your first night! :)
Sleep Metrics
Total Sleep is the time spent in bed when you were actually asleep.

For exercise sport watches are the better choice.

@@MississippiJapan Ultrahuman and RingConn have been available for a while and have great reviews. Personally, I do not have one yet.
A little late to the party but I have a question- Is this like wim hoff breathing? Thank you
I like the idea of the Oura & it was recently suggested as a fertility tracker but I have major issue with paying hundreds of dollars for a tool then being forced to pay a monthly subscription on top of that to actually use the tool.
Sounds like a great idea. I could use a phone clean-up myself!

The pros is the look, the durability and the functionality.
Its amazing for what it does and I am no doctor or scientist but I feel everything is pretty accurate to my lifestyle. The scores really push me to do better everyday ( steps, calories and sleep)
The ONE con is the subscription!!
Program to Correct the Architecture of Sleep:
Redefining Sleep Medicine
Sleep is a vital process that plays a critical role in promoting health and well-being.

Aw thanks Shayline! I hadn’t heard of OSleeve. Appreciate the tip. 🥰💍✨
@@TheScienceofSelfCare you're welcome! it's a protection for your Oura without sacrificing comfort and accurate data. I love mine!
@@TheScienceofSelfCare DONT MIND HER SHE IS A SCAM EVERY OURA RING VIDEO ON UA-cam HAS THIS FAKE PROFILE'S COMMENT
Do you work for OSleeve? I've seen you mention it on a couple reviews for Oura now ;)
This was helpful!
I also know Natural Cycles-which is an app that helps you track your fertility-is now compatible with the Oura ring.
Thank you so much for sharing!! Super valuable perspective. Do you have another device that you use and prefer now?
Thank you for sharing! I have been thinking of getting one just because I do not like wearing things on my wrist-- large watches, or fitbits. Can you wear this on any finger?
Oura recommends wearing it on your index finger as that’s the finger it was designed to be used on.
I wear it on my ring finger because it’s more comfortable for me there and it seems to work well and measure my sleep perfectly fine. :) I think the most important thing is that your ring fits well because the little LED nodules need to make contact with your skin.
Omygod congratulations on your engagement!! ❤️
Thank you, Jaël! 🥰❤️
There are several alternative smart rings available without subscriptions.
Ultrahuman air seems to track the same with no subscription
Watching your video is part of helping my decision whether or not to buy one. It seems based on what I've read and seen, it is something that I plan to purchase.
Glad this video is helpful in your decision-making process! Let me know if you have any specific questions I can answer :)
@@amandadavenport4405 sounds like your heart knows which one to go for! :)
@@TheScienceofSelfCare Haha. Maybe not....I ended up going for the silver. I think my goal is my index finger on my left hand. Silver will go best with my wedding ring. 🤣
@@amandadavenport4405 Nice choice. I have silver because all my jewelry is silver and I haven’t gotten sick of the color. Still love it :)
I just got my sizing kit today. I put the band on & it's very comfortable. Can't wait to send in my size & get my ring. Loved the video. Thank you
Exciting! The ring itself is just as comfortable and light-weight. You’ll love it. :)
Me too!
Been wearing my Oura for a month & I love it
@@murphy1384 yay! So glad to hear it. Thanks for reporting back!!
Great review, I was on the fence but will not get one for myself. Thank you.
My pleasure. Glad you found this video helpful!
With activity tracking, the ring is always on, where as you put your phone down through the day, so wouldnt it make sense the ring is higher?
Do you worry about radiation emissions using devices like this?
@@asanta2023 there’s nothing in this that would cause radiation emissions? Thats not how electronics work.
Congratulations!
So is the ring permanently connected to the app? I ask because of Electric Smog because of bluetooth.
Best regards
I ordered the wrong size as a gift. Since I did an exchange as a result, Oura now refuses to allow a return even though the new ring is not working properly. 😢
Do you wear the ring on your ring finger or on the suggested index finger? I'm wondering if that effects the difference in steps between Oura and Apple.
That shouldn’t make a different because the oura ring estimates activity using a 3D accelerometer that’s inside the ring (different than how it measures other things like heart rate).
Here’s what Oura says about it:
“By using a 3D accelerometer, the Oura Ring is able to measure the movement of your hand to estimate whole-body activity (physical activity) and leg movement (step count).”
Could the additional "steps" be accounted for by hand gestures while talking then?
@@hlcwilson that’s a nice hypothesis, though a lot of people also report Oura undercounting their steps.
I think it’s safe to say that “step counting” is not Oura’s strong suit and if steps are extremely important to someone, they should consider a different device. My iPhone seems to be pretty accurate, but it does require me having it on my body at all times. :)
I’ve been looking for something to track my sleep and came across this ring by accident. As longtime sufferer of insomnia I think I’ve found my tracker. It’ll give data on weather or not meds are working etc
I add the oura widget on my iPhone!! It’s right on the lock screen
Does it track Blood Pressure spikes? I am having a hard time finding a device that does that accurately.
Did you keep the heritage? Or would you upgrade to the horizon? Both look nice 😊
Please let me know if there’s any content you would love to see or topics you’re specifically interested in. :)
I had no idea this smart ring existed. Thank you for the video.
I have a smart ring comparison video coming out in a month or two! There are many more smart rings coming on the market.
Hi, I have an Apple Watch as well but I wasn’t sure if it would be really worth it. Were you able to figure this out? Or any recommendations?
Did you upgrade to the Gen 4 ?
nice review...congrats on engagement and I see you made it to that 1k subscribers lol.
I just got my ring today so excited! Love your review, I read that after wearing the ring for 4 days it will give you the most accurate information also I just read that we shouldn't let the ring run out of battery and don't overcharge it either. What do you think about the first 4 days?
hi, did the ring need to be trackedwith internet on ur phone. I want one but i don't have 4G on my phone
@@LeDressingDeCapucine Yes.
I love that he proposed with an Oura ring! Very cool...
Does it help you time when to go to sleep and when to wake up based off of when you are in a light sleep mode?
It does suggest ideal bedtimes and I believe you can adjust different preferences / goals. I personally aim for 8 hours each night and this (or work) determines my wake-up time. Through oura I’ve learned that I generally sleep closer to 7 ish hours… even if I’m laying in bed for longer!
I got the Oura a few days ago. Do I need to enter an activity every time I begin something?
No you do not. The app will automatically log different activities it picks up, but you often have to confirm or categorize the activity. :)
I just purchased an Oura ring. I'm waiting on my sizing kit to arrive.
Exciting times!! Hope you love it :)
@thescienceofselfcare I just got the Gen 4 Oura ring. I wanted to ask. Are you still wearing yours? Do you still find a lot of value?
Hey, thanks for your question!
In all honesty, I use it less for sleep tracking now. At this point, I feel like I understand how to get a good night of sleep. So I still wear it, but it’s not always charged. I also use it more when I do mini sleep experiments on myself.
In the future, when I start trying to conceive, I will be using this A LOT because it’s very helpful to track your body temperature / cycle.
How are you liking the gen 4??
You explained everything, I Love it, thank you so much!
My pleasure! Glad you found the video useful. :)
What colour is it please? Xx
This is the silver heritage :)
@@TheScienceofSelfCare thank you my darling. Suits you so much :) xx
The Apple Watch is not clunky at all. Really no different from any other watch. In fact, probably thinner than many other smart watches.
I disagree - my iPhone and Oura are in lock step -
It also calculates step equivalency yoga , strength training - no other wearable has the flexibility - it’s HRV is accurate
Oura also has nice meditation and best hint exercises
Thanks for sharing! Did you connect your oura to your Apple health data? That could be why they are in lock step?
When filming this, I hadn’t connected them. So I’m curious if it will be more accurate now!
What about for use other than sleep, I mostly want it for stress/oxygen levels
From my limited research, I think heart rate variability (HRV) - which can be a proxy for stress - is relatively accurate with Oura. Blood oxygen is not clinical grade but also seems relatively good compared to other wearables.
What camera did you film this on? Quality is great.
Thank you-canon m50! It’s quite a powerful little camera. Highly recommend :)
I've been thinking of getting one for a while now, becauase i don't wanna wear a sports tracker watch all the time, as i'm more into luxurary watches. So i'm just about to press the button on the order, and you vid helped with the decision :D
Glad this helped! I feel the same about sports trackers (aesthetically). Imo, this is the most subtle and tasteful wearable on the market. :)
Would love to know if it scratches or fades or tarnishes etc.;;;((. Thanks
Mine looks just as nice as the day I got it, 10 months ago. :) no obvious tarnishing and I’ve been wearing it 24/7. 👍👍
So is this only for reviewing information ? Or does it actually help with something besides that
It gives you recommendations like “take it easier today because your body temperature is up” etc.
Yes - Oura’s pedometer is really not great! I use my iPhone, which seems to be quite accurate. Many people also seem to be happy with the Apple Watch.
Comprehensive review. Good quality. Thanks for uploading.
Thanks Mike! Glad you enjoy it.
definitely thinking about getting the Oura ring, thank you!
My pleasure!! 💍
Enjoy!!
Thank you for an honest and detailed review
My pleasure!
Honestly, this is all new for me.
Very interesting, thanks for share your experience.
These latest rings, have a way to go, con their like a gym membership if you use them great if not just a waste of hard earned money. Life span of a wearable battery is limited, I guess 😊you just have to buy a new ring when they fail? If you weight lift this ring will get crushed for sure where a watch won't.
Why not on the recommended index finger?
What about when I lose weight my ring size will change
I am not sure how much your ring size will change but if it changes drastically maybe you can contact Oura? I feel they owe customers great customer service since they charge a monthly subscription.
Can it sync with Google Fit app?
Yes it does :)
Do you have to wear the ring on the ring finger?
Great question! No, it’s not necessary. In fact, Oura suggests wearing it on the index finger. I’ve also seen people wear it on the middle finger. The key is that the ring fits well on your finger so it can read your heart rate / body temp / etc.
Thank you so much 🙏🏼😊
Really helpful review, thank you.
So happy it was helpful!
Congratulations
Aw thank you!! Totally agree 💕
