Here is a list of Caran d ache rich pastel pencils colours I usually use: numbers...
Primary colours...
Reds... 788-060, 080
Yellows... 788- 240, 530, 035
Blue... 788- 145
Orange 788-052
Purple 788-099
Green 788-719
Faber-Castell Pitt pencils for the eyelashes... 1122-105, 176, 182 and 199
Rich colours I sometime use for the bright areas in the skin tones...
788- 541, 542, 871, 581. and the vivid ones I used for this portrait are 788-582, 571
Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as the lightfastness is very poor. so I use Conti a Paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it I would recommend buying the sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

Truly a God given talent. Incredible work 🔥🔥🔥
Hi Bryan, I just keep out of the way, the energy has so many names, universal energy, the muse, God and so on... I just go with the flow and observe and keep out of the way, we all have this in us, I have spent many years searching within to uncover the essence of the feeling. Thanks for the kind words... all the very best. 🙏
@@DavePortersArt make no mistake, it's God given!! Not some unknown energy, I'm an artist too and I was born with it, God given!!! I'm a realist portrait artist as well.

You are welcome 🙂 Thank you for the kind words and watching the video. 💕🤗
You are so very talented Dave and I absolutely love watching your videos 😭
When you mention in your videos about opening the heart to the picture, well I always thought it to be a magical type of experience when that happens too!
It's fantastic to hear someone else explain just what I have experienced as an artist too but couldn't quite ever put into words - that is shutting off our monkey mind and channeling our heightened sense of connection/vision.
Keep 'em comin'! ☺️
Thank you so much for your kind words. Thrilled you love watching my videos, thank you. Wonderful that you sense the same feeling I connect to when creating work. The mind plays tricks on us for sure, from about the age of 12 years olds I have been interested on how the mind works. All the very best. 🙏

🤔😮👍😎🔥😀HHMM!!! Oh Wow!!! Very Cool!!! Amazing Job!!!! Thank You!!!
Hi... thank you so much! You are welcome 🙏🙏
Hi Dave, to this day this is my favorite skin tone tutorial. I've gone astray with some method where the face starts off looking like the incredible hulk or Kermit the frog.
Not sure if that is for me, I'm only 1 year into this and with your method at least I can produce a pleasing painting.
Thanks for everything- Dave
Hi Dave. Lol... good to try different methos until one clicks 👍
Great to know you are finding this video useful Dave. Thanks for watching them. All the very 🍻🙏
I’d be thrilled just to get to the under layer stage and it look as good as yours!
It is only practice Cherry, once you get the hang of mixing the three primaries and secondaries it will be straight forward for you I'm sure. 🙏🙏
Dave, do you have a video with the beginning drawing of portrait?
@@pierceandrews4975 Hi Pierce... I haven't a slower version... I have so many outline videos in my channel with this video I wanted to focus more on the other stages. 🙏
Love your videos. They are so informative and instructive. But I have difficulty trying to find out the actual pencils and colors that you use for the portrait videos.
Thank you, means a lot to me... thanks for watching. All the brands and numbers are listed in the description below this video.
Or if you really want to learn my technique, consider joining me on Patreon for more in-depth videos. 😊🙏
Hello Dave. Your drawings are outstanding!! Most of my pencils are "Faber Castle" would they be good enough for this kind of drawing please? Also blending the colours is my biggest problem. 😊
Hi Piedade... please check out this video in my channel... Learn my skin tone technique | 3 different Brands 3 Reviews. ua-cam.com/video/kbxFSTRu0f4/v-deo.html I explain how I use Faber Castell pencils. 🙏
❤❤❤❤❤
🥰🙏
I am just curious as to what kind of pastel pencils you use . There are many different types oil , chalk ect . Any help would be greatly appreciated. Absolutely beautiful work btw . I have subscribed to your channel and am in awe of your work ❤
Hi Heidi... thank you so much for your kind words and watching my videos... the pastels I use are soft pastels or chalky pastels... if you look in the description under this videos I share with you the brands and numbers I use... if you Google the brands you will get to know more about them... all the very best with your art journey 🙂🙏
Hi Dave do you do a video on how you do the first freehand sketch please.
Hi Jean... I haven't for this portrait but if you check out my playlist I have several explaining my outline freehand procedure.... here is the link 🙏🙏

Have you done any portraits with a child that has face painting? I'm trying to work out the details with shading in pastel.
Thanks for the great fun idea... if you check this video in my channel I discuss how you can shade any colour... here is the link ua-cam.com/video/7YGvMZ-N0jw/v-deo.html
What were the Pitt pastel pencils you used for the eye details? Don’t see them on the list. Thanks for these great videos!
Hi Julie... Let me check.... 1122-105, 176, 182 and 199. Thanks for letting my know will add them... You are welcome 😊🙏
@@DavePortersArt Thanks so much!
hi Dave, looking to get into portraits. Would you recommend pencils or the pastel sticks.
Hi Terry, I prefer building up the subtleties with the pencils I do use the sticks occasionally if needed. All the very best 🙏
I really love your tutorials but I use crayola.is it possible if you make a tutorial for crayola colored pencils
Thanks for the suggestion Abigi. It is hard to keep up with all the different brands out there. I tend to stick to what I have developed in pastels. Will give it soon consideration. All the very best to you. 💕🙏
you really are a favorite! How long has this taken you?
Thank you so much Anna, on average on a full portrait taken around 15... 20 hours. 🙏
Hey :) If you had to explain the process in a few steps what would they be ?
From what im seeing,at first you put a few layers but its still not the actual skin tone, and then you put colors on top that look more like skin tone colors + you blend with your fingers, and then you do details ?
Also,do you blend the eyes using your fingers? Like the iris and all the smaller parts? Cause i cant the color goes everywhere my fingers are too big to blend it.
For more in-depth information Realtime please check out this video in my channel... ua-cam.com/video/7YGvMZ-N0jw/v-deo.html
Regarding blending... the tool I use for details is a colour shaper... amzn.to/3dLGaTh
All the best... thanks for watching 🙏
@@DavePortersArt thank you!! 🙏🙏
What Paper are you using for this? and Thanks
Hi Gary... its Pastelmat dark grey... I list all materials in the description. 🙏
Hi Dave! I have a question: do you do the basic drawing with graphite or black pastel pencil? I think if it is in pastel pencil, will be easier the lines will be absorbed by the colored pastel pencil….Thanks!
Hi Loreto, I use a Carbothello 708 grey pencil on Pastelmat dark grey board. . and you are quite correct as its grey it doesn't cause the colour to muddy up and melts away. You are welcome. 🙏🙏
Are these pastels? What brand do you use?
Please check the description for the list of pencils and brand names 🙏
What paper and color are u using in that sir
Pastelmat Dark Grey 🙏😊
Are these oil pastels?
They are soft chalk pastels, my method of colour mixing should work with any medium. Thanks for watching 🙏
I would’ve enjoyed it more if you could’ve been a little slower…
Thanks for the feedback... this video is quite an old one... my recent uploads have more realtime here and there. Please consider join Patreon if you would like the benefit of all realtime. All the best 🙏
