Where have you been all my life! Love the limited palette! I use mostly soft pastels but this technique is a game changer! Looking forward to trying this in my portraits! Thanks!
I don't keep any secrets... I give everything I know... what's wonderful is I am always learning and developing with every painting it is an amazing medium. 🙏🙏
Hi! You have given me loads of information about the use of pastels. I’m just starting out, after concentrating on watercolor portraits for quite a while. I liked your idea of relaxing into the rhythm of laying on the colors. I agree that helps immensely, as I believe that tension can be seen in your final product. Another thing I want to strive to do, particularly in painting a baby or young child, is pay attention to small, subtle details in values and proportions. I’ve noticed often that it’s so easy to add years to those soft baby faces. Kids are a challenge! Thank you for your generosity in teaching us about pastel portraiture. I look forward to viewing many more tutorials.
Hi!... Thank you so much for your kind words Judith... means a lot. Pastel are such a joy to use... thank you so much for watching my videos... all the very best 🙏🙂
An incredible teacher. I usually watch your video when i'm a little down, when my drawings are not going so well. And everytime, at the end of your video, i found the motivation, the faith and the ambition back. Your words are quite right and encouraging. Thank you! By the way, your drawings are so great!
Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback Morgane!... so thrilled that you are enjoying the video and the words, humbled that they are a source of inspiration... all the very best to you! Cheers Dave. 🙏
Like you, I am in the UK. I love your calm approach and your work is astounding. 4 years ago I was doing pet portraits in Prismacolor coloured pencil and did about 6 one after another for people I knew. Like you, I am a realist and it has to look exactly like the subject, the eyes and every bit of fur, etc. After producing that many I had had enough and stopped. I had invested in a few different complete pencil sets. Recently I wanted to start again as a hobby but found I lost confidence after such a long gap so kept putting it off! I made myself start on a portrait of my brother and now every day cannot wait to carry on with it! It’s like I’ve come home! Now I’m learning even more techniques. Thank you for your wonderful videos. You are an inspiration.
Good to know you are from the UK... thank you for your kind words. It is important to have time to paint what you personally want to do. Commissions can create tension with all the time limits and expectation that are involved. You are welcome... thrilled my work inspires you so much. All the very best with your renewed passion for art. Take care. 🙏
Hi Dave, this has really helped me get out of my comfort zone (furry friends) and explore skin tones so I can do human portraits! I've moved from 'oh my word, there's no way I am going to be able to do this!' to 'yeah ok, think I can get the hang of this with a lot of practise." Thanks to your tutorials. Tara

I’ve tried an under painting of green. I use 3 or maybe 4 greens to get a likeness and get the values right. I was proud of it when I finished with the greens. Then came the colour, I found this very difficult but I finished the picture in the end. I use pan pastels then pastel pencils for details. This video is great to understand how the colours work. Thank you 😊 I know that feeling you are describing, I call it getting into the zone. I feel relaxed and it just happens. I just need to get into that zone more often but when you do it’s great.
Hi Gillina... I really like to simplify the colours to primaries and complementary colours when creating skin tones... I have tried using similar colours but they didn't seem subtle enough. Truly love watching how you work, Dave. Is there any way to do some real time video of a child’s face. It’s hard to sort it all out when it’s going so fast. I’m learning so much about color through you and don’t want to miss something. Thank you so very much for taking the time to do these videos. I watch them over and over.
Hi Jeni... thanks for being interested in my work... Will be creating another child drawing in Pastel with realtime footage here and there... I have slowed the pace in places within this video. Its a learning curve... trying to balance not making the video too long and keeping most of the footage in is difficult. Will try a different approach maybe cut a lot of footage out to give more realtime showing each stage... something that I am looking into to improve. Cheers... Take care 😊🙏
Dave Porters Art thank you so Dave. I can appreciate how making videos can be difficult. It’s helping me to use the white then put the color in! I was loosing my light areas.I look forward to the next video! ❤️
What an incredible video. I am very new to using pastels and would never have thought of using the undertone colours you have used. Your work is just beautiful.
Glad it was helpful Claire! appreciate the kind words. It is a technique I developed similar to how I paint in Oils. It seems to work well to achieve the glow that skin has. 😊😊🙏
Just found your channel and so glad I did, I’m just starting out with pastels coming from a digital art background. Your work is so inspiring and informative. Thank you so much. Would be mad not to subscribe. Off to binge on your videos. 👍🏼
Hi Deryl... thanks for taking the time to comment... glad you find what I do interesting 🙏 good to know that you find my voice ok too 😀 it was hard at first to hear it myself... Cheers for the kind feedback! 😊🙏
Okay, you inspired me. So I ran out and bought a 48 color set of Modern Master's Pastel pencils from Hobby Lobby, here in the U.S., and a pad of pastel paper. I've done charcoal and oil portraits for years but wanted to try something new. Well. it is either me or maybe Modern Master's pastels are a very poor quality but I absolutely hate what I came up with. LOL Thank you for including the brand of pastel pencils you use. I'll have to try those when I get a bit more money. UGH!
Hi David... Glad you are inspired... how I mix colour is exactly like I do with oil painting but mixing them on the paper/board rather than mixing them on a pallete. The surface you use has a massive impact on the result you can achieve... I do prefer Pastelmat or senellier sand card. Makes all the difference. So before buying anymore pastels I would suggest trying them on a sanded surface. Take care 😊🙏
I subscribed some weeks ago and always looking forward to your next video. Beautiful drawing and great color techniques which I want to try myself as well, using just primary and secondary colors. In the description you name the full set of pencils you use. Could you also maybe name the individual pencil and color codes? Would be very helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your work, love it and looking forward for the next one!
Hi Dorien... I will look into doing just that... thanks for the idea. I'm thrilled that you are enjoying my videos and look forward to more... really appreciate the kind feedback... Cheers!
Amazing! Thank you for the tips. I love working with pastels and portraits and this is helpful. I'm in awe of how something like that can be made from so few colors.

This is really worth the time. A big thanks for this, but will love to ask a few questions; do you have challenges with some clients? Like them dictating or spotting out few errors as a professional and what will you advice young artist like a few who needs to get some cash to buy good products and also assist the family. I am asking as regards to my latest jobs I did that I have to paint a portrait within 3 days measured at 3×4 feet and a few changes was made etc what best advice would you give.
Thank you for watching Tanimowo... you are very welcome. It can be challenging sometimes with clients, what with the time they would like it for and asking to change this and expecting realistic results from really bad quality reference images. There is no real answer to this, just take a deep breath, and focus on giving rather than receiving then God will give you the strength and insights to complete the work. Stay focuses in your heart and all will be well 🙏
@@DavePortersArt thanks so master. Liked what you said in this video about emptying yourself and it's just the perfect way to achieve greatness in art. Thanks so much.
These saying stick with us 😊... I keep getting the message in my awareness from my past art teacher... "persevere just keep persevering it will come". That was way back when I was around 13 years old I received that jewel of inspiration. I am so grateful for all the pointers I have received over the years. 🙏🙏

Hi Dave, I am so excited about this new medium that I started collecting pastel pans, pencils just to name a few, BUT I don't know where to start! I love portrait and trying my first piece, it was a total disaster! Where do you find easy reference photos for the absolute beginner? Please help
Hi Annelize... it is an amzing medium to work with. I would start by just practicing on say noses, then ears, eyes and so on. Best to see it has play and enjoy exploring... this will calm things down. Find some images out of a magazine and draw them. Happy Drawing and painting ☺
Love your art! You've listed the numbers for the caran dache pastel pencils but not for the stabilo carbothellos. I have the 60 set but still can't work out what colours you picked lol 😆
Hi Victoria the Carbothello pencils are... green 585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 amd white 100. I dont use this brand's blues as the lightfastness is very poor. so I use conti a paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19 ... hope that helps :-)

New "drawing" artist here! Love your tutorials. What name brand of pastel pencils do you recommend aside of these professional grade? I had to take a gander at their prices as I DO love trying new products. I must save that purchase for when I feel confident enough in my skill to rate such quality! 😳
Hi Taira... thank you... for many many years I only used conti a Paris they are not expensive but are professional grade as the light fastness is really high. So if you are on a budget please check them out. I have a link for amazon in my description. ☺
@@DavePortersArt thank you for your fast response! Yes, I do have a nice stash of that brand. Being a little older and financially established than most young artists, I am blessed to dapple with some fine quality supplies. I "want" to afford those listed. Haha!! I better stick with the nicer university grade first. I was just uncertain of the next best thing. I'll check out your amazon list though. I know I have the chalk pastels. Hi i have been watching your videos and i realised you use more than on type of pastel pencils which are both quite expensive, its my birthday soon and looking at budget i can only buy 1 of them, which one do you prefer or recommend
Hi Sana... thanks for the comment... I would just buy the Carbothello ones, then just buy a white Caron d arche pencils. If you are concerned about lightfastness I would also buy a couple of blue pencils single from the conti d paris range... with these you would still achieve the same results. hoep that helps

It seems like I try your method and I always end up with mud. Am I applying my color to thick? As I watch you it looks like you’re not even applying color at times.
Hi Mike... too much pigment causes loads of problems not only with mixing but getting the texture... so lightly apply. I would recommend a sanded surface too... it is magic to work on and worth the cash. I use Pastelmat board. 🙏

Thanks Dave for your expert tuition ,I’ve only ever done one portrait and now I realise why it looked so flat.
Hi Ros, thanks for the kind words... thrilled that you are getting value through watching them. Take care and all the very best with your artwork. ☺
Absolutely brilliant Dave, so easy to follow 🙏xx
Cheers Rose! 🙏🙏xx
Just found your channel and so glad I did, I’m just starting out with pastels coming from a digital art background. Your work is so inspiring and informative. Thank you so much. Would be mad not to subscribe. Off to binge on your videos. 👍🏼
That awesome Karl... thrilled that you are finding value in them 👍 enjoy the binge watching 😀
Just found your channel, amazed by how you attain the colours and terms and also find your voice very pleasant to listen to! Thank you!
Hi Deryl... thanks for taking the time to comment... glad you find what I do interesting 🙏 good to know that you find my voice ok too 😀 it was hard at first to hear it myself... Cheers for the kind feedback! 😊🙏
I am so pleased I have found your channel, such lovely helpful videos!
Thank you so much Amy for taking the time comment... appreciated. So pleased that you are finding value in the videos. 😊🙏
again, thanks Dave
You are very welcome Jimmy! 🙏
Cheers!
@@DavePortersArt I saw the color numbers in the next video, thank you so much!

Amazing! Thank you for the tips. I love working with pastels and portraits and this is helpful. I'm in awe of how something like that can be made from so few colors.

Thank Frank... to this stage it took I reckon around 4...5 hours. It is a steady technique 😊🙏
Thank you so much sir 😊😊😊this really helps
My pleasure my friend... thrilled that you are getting value from it. 😊🙏
Thanl you!

thank you
Wonderful to watch, I wonder if I will ever understand the sequence of colours your using,
What is the size of your drawing?
Hi Lynne... thank you for watching... I will be producing an in-depth video for Patreon regarding that. This drawing is 12 "×10" 🙏
@@DavePortersArt thanks Dave, I still have to draw quite large to get the details right, was curious how big your sketch was.
@@lynnemcnab76 the size is 12"×10" Lynne 😊🙏
Yep just like my art teacher used to say "love on it" & "stay attached to it"
These saying stick with us 😊... I keep getting the message in my awareness from my past art teacher... "persevere just keep persevering it will come". That was way back when I was around 13 years old I received that jewel of inspiration. I am so grateful for all the pointers I have received over the years. 🙏🙏

Beautiful work! Question, how does one erase mistakes with pastels???
Hi Jennifer, thank you so much! It is very straight forward to change mistake, I talk about it in this video as I made a mistake with the size of the eyes and I show how I fixed it... here the link for you to check it out... ua-cam.com/video/a0SUjxdZLpg/v-deo.html 💕🙏
@@DavePortersArt Thank you so much Dave!!! I just purchased some pastels and plan to follow along with your videos to learn. Thank you!
Thank u so much, definitely helps! Learning so much from u. Have you thought about doing patreon? X
@@victoriabaxter-ashworth6219 my pleasure Victoria, I've almost finished my 4 hour (exclusive to my Patreons) close to real-time Narrated video of my Lilly video (how to mix skin tones of a child) so anyone who pledges on my Patreon page would be able to stop at any point on the video and see every stroke I made to create the pastel painting. Will be doing the same with this one of Olivia too. Would joining my community on Patreon interest you? Still having tech issues that I'm working through so looks like it could be a few weeks away from launching.

muito obrigado 🙏💕
I definitely want the pastel pencils though. You make this look so easy and are very encouraging! Thank you again!

Hello
Thank you for the tutorial/video.
Could you tell me the make/number/names of the colours you have used for this work, please. I had tried to access this information from the links below but only saw entire sets rather than the individual pencils used, I would appreciate your help ( I am just beginning.) Many thanks.
Hi Ohanzee, you are welcome... that is one of the benefits supporting me on Patreon... I list all the pencils used and brands. Here is the link to find out more. www.patreon.com/daveportersart thanks for watching. 🙏

What do you use to sharpen your pencils? I have tried a number of sharpeners but haven't found anything that works well.
I use a knife to sharpen my pencils... if you check out the eye video I show you how... here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/Okz-XbSs5Ys/v-deo.html time stamp 5.01 🙏

Yes Amanda, just give it a go 🙏
I am interested to know why the pastel dust does not drop down your paper when you work upright?
Hi Alison, the the surface I use... Pastelmat, the pastel clings to it so that it is not so dusty 🙏
U r great
This is very much useful for me
Can you please the name of paper
Hi Dherendra! Thank you for taking the time to comment... thrilled that you find them useful. The paper/board is Pastelmat. 😊🙏
@@DavePortersArt thanks Dave, I’ll try that.
