the comments on here are hilarious, seems many of you have turned art into a 'who's best at drawing' competition. art is about having fun so do whatever is fun, projector or not, just draw squiggles if that feels fun to you. who are you to tell someone what they should be doing to enjoy art? great video, thank you.

Leonardo da Vinci did use projection! He used concave mirrors to project and trace his subjects. Many grand masters have used projections, Johannes Vermeer is particularly known for his use of the camera obscura to capture his “photographic” perfect perspectives. To “cheat” is to break the rules, but in art there are no rules.

@@sword-and-shieldThere are plenty of proofs and facts, just take the time to look them up. Vermeer’s use of the camera obscura is common knowledge.

@@sword-and-shield I think you may have an idealized notion of “authenticity” in the arts. Look up the engraving titled “The Judgement of Paris” (1510-1520) created by Marcantonio Raimondi, based on a drawing by Raphael. Observe the three figures at the bottom right corner of the print. Now look up Édouard Manet’s painting “Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe” (1863), do you find any similarities?

This is a great video and really so, so helpful. I am just a hobby artist and have thought about getting a small projector for literally years, but didn't want to spend money getting the wrong thing that wouldn't work.
Now I can get the right thing and get started producing big scale masterpieces !
Well, maybe not masterpieces, but at least something bigger than an A4 sketch.

FYI Leonardo did have and use a projector. It wasn't electric, but using a photographic trick he could project an image. The guy was a genius you know. This was covered in many of my art classes in college.

Thanks for running through this mate. I spent all day trying to upscale my reference onto a large 30x40 cavas yesterday, and I still only managed to get half of the sketch down, need to continue with it today, phew... A projector would save so much time, and cost for time spent on a piece. Could be way more productive.

Camera Obscura - The 15th century digital projectors
Well-known artists who used a camera obscura were Canaletto, Vermeer and Leonardo Da Vinci. But what is a camera obscura? A camera obscura is a tool to create art in perfect perspective and detail.

This is my own personal view on art………
I looked at your work….and it’s excellently rendered and people will love your wildlife art…well done for using the tools available to your best advantage…..I would rather have one of your wildlife drawings which have been traced and well finished than a poorly done one…..
One of my favourite artists since I was young was David Roberts….he travelled to Egypt and surrounds and sketched all the amazing monuments….then his work was produced as etchings and printed……I always thought he was a genius draughtsman…..
Alas!……… I am naive and he used a camera lucida………..bubble burst for me….
I’ve known a few wildlife artists in Cape Town……and I only need to look at the quality of their sketches to immediately see whether they can draw or not……most can’t….
You are right ….these tools certainly speed up the end result….
As you know, when you sketch from life…..there is a different energy in the line….
Good luck with your work and we’ll done to you

Interesting view on tracing. Do you use your own photographs to trace? One of the reasons I left the art field was due to the prevalence of photography and tracing. Clients really didn’t care how the final product was done, they just wanted it done cheap and yesterday. I was in scientific illustration, murals, and backgrounds. Weeks spent in zoological sample and cadaver labs while in college proved to be worthless in the real world. Thankfully, the med school degree was helpful elsewhere. You will do what you want, there won’t be problems unless someone claims photography copyright on one of your pieces. Keep good records on your sources, and make sure they belong to you.

@@StudioWildlife Hey, thanks for letting me know. Very sorry I was wrong. I watched your video then bought the projector hours after. I looked at lots of different sellers and did a dive into looking at lots of other projectors and video's and buy the time the projector arrived my brain had changed my memory of you using your iPad to keystone the image into a memory of you doing the keystone with the projector. I think I also got thrown by the fact that in the operator manual there is a photo of the menue and below the zoom funtion it says keystone. Which got my head spinning. I think I should delete my post as it's not very helpfull to others looking at your video. However I'm also happy to edit the post and write in block capitals I AM AN IDIOT! IGNORE THIS POST STUDIO WILDLIFE DID NOT SAY OR DEMONSTRATE THAT THE PROJECTOR HAS A KEYSTONE FUNCTION. : ) let me know what you would like me to to. I'm happy with whatever you want me to do. Change of subject do you have problems with knocking the projector or the image moving, especially if you have to stop penciling in for whatever reason and come back many hours or a few days later? That was the problem I used to have with my bigger projector. If so do you have any tips for keeping the projector totally stable? I thought I might hang a weight from the center of my tripod to give it some more stablilty. I also want to say thanks for the orininal video as it drew my attention to the fact that they make mini projectors that fit to tripods and that the projector you told us about is just the ticket! If you draw your subject, or you trace it you still have to have the art skills to paint your work .If you draw it and trace it and it's identical to each other then you only saved yourself a lot of time to get the project done ,for your client .No big deal, the master is in the paint work itself.

He said in an earlier comment the fix is to get a tripod that focuses downward.
The projector will project in any direction.

I can't use one. I'm watching now..if you can draw u are not cheating. If u can't draw. If u use a protector must tell people and a sign made by the projector😊

Here's my thing: sure, da vinci and vermeer and rembrandt and even caravaggio used camera obscura to place their subjects in space for general spacial relationships, but they didn't trace details, they traced outlines. They also didn't use the camera for objects or settings. So, they were actually able to draw and create from their minds and relay it to a medium, also known as art. If you are simply and dispassionately tracing and then painting, its literally no different than paint by numbers. 10 year olds can do paint by numbers 😂😂 i aint buying their work that's for sure. This is the same conversation in photography with the subject of composites. Some photographers stay up n out all night, sometimes for days, waiting to get the right shot in the right location. Then some douche comes along, snaps cellphone pic, cleans it up and alters it and pushes it, slaps it into another photo, cleans that up digitally, and everyone thinks they took a picture of the moon fifty times bigger than it ever could be floating directly over the empire state building 100 times closer than it ever could with a lake and an ancient oak atvthe base of the building. And that garbage sells more than a photograph of just the tree, building, or moon. Its trash. Equally, art should be about creating an image from your mind using your talents to display a style indicative of your emotions about that subject. Hyper realist garbage will always intrigue people more than impressionism or any other non-perfect art style. But theres no emotion in it. What are you trying to say in tracing an image? Fuck all. Thats what.
And before anyone yells at me, i use a projector in my pieces. Im not claiming to make art. I make product. I project imagery onto wood, and then wood burn it or paint it. That aint art, kids. Thats product pieces. Don't lie to yourselves.

I get why you do use a projector, it gives you a perfect outline or platform for painting - but it is still kind of cheating regardless of what you say. I know a lot of youtube artists do it but it doesnt make you Leonardo da Vinci even though I think he used the camera lucida for perspective - make of that what you will.
I don't suppose we will ever see anyone using a projector on Portrait Artist of the Year will we, however portable it is!! because your perceived skill level will vanish.
Ditch the projector and do it without the help of a machine, it will not look as perfect as your current crop but it will have energy and character which is what sells if you have a talent.

I understand what you are saying, in that using a projector like this can tighten up the artwork, and freehanding a painting shows more energy and freedom. I do both styles of painting depending on what I want to do. I prefer freehanding and just jumping straight into an expressive painting it’s way more fun and quicker. But most of the work I sell is more refined and my collectors don’t want loose and energetic, the actual painting process can take months, I could freehand it but it would take far too long to achieve the look I’m aiming for, when I can just use a projector to map out the drawing which can save me days of work. The skill in those kind of paintings is in the rendering of the paint rather than the initial under drawing. So the projecting is just a more efficient way of doing the underdrawing. Also there’s actually been a few portrait artists on that show that have used projectors. One even brought a portable printer and traced their drawing onto the canvas, and won their heat I believe. At the end of the day Art and the process of creating art is down to the maker. As long as the artist is happy with their process it shouldn’t matter how they made it. If the finished artwork inspires, and connects with the viewer why is any part of their process cheating (Unless it’s a printed photo with a bit of paint chucked on at the end… that would be cheating 😂)

Wait a minute... So you're just tracing?? That is definitely cheating. The artist is supposed to be the projector.

Scaling your sketch with a projector is obviously cheating. Redrawing at a large scale takes tons of time and patience, and winding up with a perfectly proportioned outline for a painting 4 times larger than the sketch is a genuine skill. Circumventing that for ease is literally the definition of cheating.
I'm not trying to police how anyone does anything, and your art is top fckin notch but it's still cheating even if all the pros do it, even if all the youtubers promise its not.

No it isnt. Its actually optimising workflow and absolutely legit in these times of heavy competition.
It gives you NO advantage except of saving time because you still need so many more skills to produce that painting.
The blueprint stencils EVERY tattooer are the same case: you have to maximise precision on a canvas (an actual human) that isnt reusable or erasable and your working time is limited because of the pain the process causes. You still need a lot of skills, knowledge and fingertip sensitivity to master that portrait your customer is getting tattooed.

@@conny.rapp.tattooit may not be a simple yes or no answer whether it’s cheating or not, but let’s be honest many ‘’artists’’ can’t even draw basic sketches, so they use projectors for everything, and people who don’t know how difficult it is to draw, especially portraits, think they are super talented etc. lolll

@@conny.rapp.tattoo btw I’m a tattoo artist myself but we don’t compare stencils to projectors, we work on human beings so errors should be minimized, and erasing is not an option while tattooing. You can’t compare someone’s body to a piece of paper

    • @Vol4ica
      @Vol4ica 8 місяців тому +5

@macdietz Projector is not cheating at all. Who said that you always have to project the photo? You can project your own sketch as well. It is super messy to do the sketch on the final canvas of artwork (except some specific artstyles that dont use sketches at all), and not all mediums are this forgiving. For example in pastels you fill up the tooth of paper if you draw too much and/or put a lot of pressure, and erasing also damages the paper. So you have to 100% succeed with sketch from the first attempt, and every single line should be perfect (and never be seen through the upcoming layers). But why? For what? You already made a sketch with pencil on some A4, why not just project it? Whom to and what are you trying to prove?
