Wonderful work Dave, you're a treasure, thank you for sharing. I've dabbled with pastel and pencil portraits off and on for the past 20 or so years. Hi Dave, I like your portrait very much! 😊 Do you use the fixative to protect your portrait? Some artists don't use it, because sometimes it can alter the hues of the pigments, especially with soft pastels. Thanks, Silvia
Hi Silvia, I don't like to use fixative as it dulls colours. If I am storing the work I wrap it in Glassine paper. I also frame under a mount and glass. Take care... all the best 🙏
Excellent, but what finish can be used(like a fixative for ordinary pencils),is there something like a transparent finish, that gets hard and protects them?Bc pastel is pretty fragile and 'catches' a lot of dust, hair etc.I am talking about soft, oil pastel, like i use.
The surface we use makes all the difference... I have an allergy to dust, Pastelmat seem to grab the pigment and hardly any dust is created. I frame my work under glass /mount or store them wrapped in glassine paper. thanks for watching🙏

How do you sharpen your pencils? Thanks so much for this wonderful portrait and all the instruction. Could you do this portrait with Stabilio Carbothello alone (and just the two white pencils) or do you need Caran D Ache ones also?

Hi, thank you so much for your kind words, they are all chalk and soft pastels, there is a list of brands I use in the description below this video. All the very best... thanks for watching🙏
I think we can use some powder to make the painting more realistic. Just like make up. The liquid form of painting mixed with power finish, a fusion new way of painting. Benefit? More even painting plus quick dry.

Thrilled you love my videos Julia... yes the technique would work the same for coloured pencil if you use pastelmat as your surface. I would recommend the CarbOthello set... than buy a single Carand'Ache Chinese white and a Faber Castell 101 white. All the very best 🙏
Just amazing brother. One question : when you feel like your finished with the detail stage would you say that all the little grey holes of the pastelmat are gone ? Sometimes i keep going until all the paper is covered and sometimes that looks plastic
Hi Dave, because I work in layers, the grey colour of the pastelmat acts as a desaturation for colours in some of the midtone and the shadow areas. All the pastelmat is covered... there is more pigment in some areas than others. The reason it might look plastic is that the tooth of the pastel mat has gone... I always leave enough tooth for the subtle details to grab on to. All the very best 🙏
