      Hi MariJana, thrilled the video has inspired you to dust off those pastel pencils 😊 They are fun to use for sure... I would suggest drawing on Paselmat or any sanded surface, magic to work on... makes all the difference. Thank you for the kind words and watching my video... all the very best. 🙏

      I use grey with Oil Paints too... great base colour. I figured out that every colour can be a grey by adding the complimentary colours together... so I find grey the perfect colour as the surface... also it helps to see the values and somehow the work seems to pop too. 🙏

    You are incredible! I see how you take your time and relax and let it flow. I tend to get so anxious and rush things for no reason. I'm going to emulate your flow and take my time and get the detail I really want in my art from now on! Thank you for the inspiration!

    That's a good lesson, I hope I can put it to practice, I'm new to pastels and I'm still just experimenting with some soft pastels and different kinds of paper, I've had good success many years ago when I practiced with pastels, I'm going to get some pastel pencils, some Panpastel and some other kinds of papers, now I just need to practice the various techniques, but it's a fun pastime and the results are often surprising.

    I am absolutely blown away brave at the simplicity you use to create your wonderfully true to absolute life skin tone colours.
    Certainly , even in New Zealand you can buy single Caran D’Ashe pencils from pastels down to coloured pencils. From a young age I’ve been drawn to pastels though we didn’t have the toothed paper back then s9 I frequently mixed my media’s to get the effect I could see in my mind’s eyes and to get what I wanted. Now it’s different. It’s VERY exciting actually.
    Thank you so very much

      Aww, thanks Margot, I like a limited palette as it makes thing nice and straight forward and it creates beautiful colour harmonies too. Paper plays a very important part... when I started back in the day there was no sanded surface tooth so the paper that was available created a lot of dust, with pastelmat it is like zero dust and it is magic to work on. You are welcome thanks for watching... all the very best. 🙏😊

    Hi Dave, I like your portrait very much! 😊 Do you use the fixative to protect your portrait? Some artists don't use it, because sometimes it can alter the hues of the pigments, especially with soft pastels. Thanks, Silvia

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  Рік тому

      Hi Silvia, I don't like to use fixative as it dulls colours. If I am storing the work I wrap it in Glassine paper. I also frame under a mount and glass. Take care... all the best 🙏

    Excellent, but what finish can be used(like a fixative for ordinary pencils),is there something like a transparent finish, that gets hard and protects them?Bc pastel is pretty fragile and 'catches' a lot of dust,hair etc.I am talking about soft,oil pastel, like i use.

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  11 місяців тому +3

      The surface we use makes all the difference... I have an allergy to dust, Pastelmat seem to grab the pigment and hardly any dust is created. I frame my work under glass /mount or store them wrapped in glassine paper. thanks for watching🙏

    How do you sharpen your pencils? Thanks so much for this wonderful portrait and all the instruction. Could you do this portrait with Stabilio Carbothello alone (and just the two white pencils) or do you need Caran D Ache ones also?

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  Рік тому

      You would need a fresher white, either a Caran d'Ache Chinese or Azurite white. You could use the Faber Castel white I tend to use that more now, then use your CarbOthello pencils with them. Regarding sharpening pencils, watch this video I show you how. Here is the link... ua-cam.com/video/7YGvMZ-N0jw/v-deo.html All the best 🙏

      Thrilled you love my videos Julia... yes the technique would work the same for coloured pencil if you use pastelmat as your surface. I would recommend the CarbOthello set... than buy a single Carand'Ache Chinese white and a Faber Castell 101 white. All the very best 🙏

    Just amazing brother. One question : when you feel like your finished with the detail stage would you say that all the little grey holes of the pastelmat are gone ? Sometimes i keep going until all the paper is covered and sometimes that looks plastic

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  Рік тому +1

      Hi Dave, because I work in layers, the grey colour of the pastelmat acts as a desaturation for colours in some of the midtone and the shadow areas. All the pastelmat is covered... there is more pigment in some areas than others. The reason it might look plastic is that the tooth of the pastel mat has gone... I always leave enough tooth for the subtle details to grab on to. All the very best 🙏
