I'm sorry you lost your mom. I lost mine Feb 21st, 2015 and I can relate. My mom wasn't a planner but she did write me little notes and I cherish them. She didn't think her handwriting was all that special either but.. it is. :)
Functional planner for me means to decorate in it and write in it. Otherwise, if decorated only, it is just a sticker book. I think writing slower, not quickly scrawling, is the best tip.
Perfect timing! I'm sitting here writing in my planner using different lettering to make it look different and what video pops up? I just keep practicing and my planner looks better and better but I experiment, don't freak out if I make a mistake and just keep on going and growing. Thanks Heather for continuing to talk about lettering! It's a process!!
I must be weird because I like writing in my planner. My handwriting is abysmal, but I hope that over the course of the year I can work on it. Practice makes perfect!
I do not mind my regular handwriting but really not a fan of my cursive so I am practicing it. I am using an extra Classic planner just for handwriting. Great tips Heather!
Hi Heather! I’m a new follower to your channel and somewhat new to planning, especially when it comes to decorating my planner. I started really getting into planning back in September 2018, and initially purchased a Recollections planner. At that time I began to realize that there is a large community of Planning and Planner Babes. However, I’ve recently switched over to The Happy Planner and absolutely love it. I just want to say every time I watch one of your videos I come away learning something new. I even get out my planner and write down notes as I’m watching your videos. Thank you for being such a great inspiration!
Thank you Heather for some new ways to use my Erin Condren pens! I love watching your videos...never too much talking and your videos don’t take up too much time!!!!
My lifesaver is the Frixion erasable pens!!! If I dont like what I write, I can erase and do it again. Plus, they come in all sorts of pen tips... .38, .5, .7 and tons if colors! And, they have erasable markers and highlighters too!
Perfect timing for this video! I have been putting off writing in my planner for a week now until I can practice my lettering. Now I’m going to use my planner to practice! 🤗. I noticed how slow you write. I think that makes a difference too
I'm trying not to scrawl in my planner! I jot things down so fast! 🤦♀️ I'm excited to slow down and practice. Thanks for the reminder! This was on my list to do. 😊
Love your videos. I wish you would do some videos on lettering and show how to do the lettering small steps at the time and talk us through it. I bought books and looking at them just doesn’t give the instructions I need. I love your lettering and have tried the practicing but it just doesn’t help to practice if you’re doing it wrong.
She actually has done a couple hand lettering videos, look at her playlists. There are also tons of people who do hand lettering videos. I've started watching a couple. :)
Planning lead to hand lettering. Because I wanted my planner to be ‘pretty’ I learned hand lettering. Now I’m getting paid to work on projects. #sidehustle. Hand lettering is a hobby that stemmed from planning. Who knew? 🤷♀️
The King's Daughter Sure! I started watching a lot of videos on UA-cam from Kelly Creates, love Leigh Loops, Ensign Insights. I bought the book Heather recommended on her channel Maghon Taylor’s Happy Handlettering. I like this book because it teaches you a whimsical style. I also bought 2 of kellycreates books. I love them because they teach you the structure of copper plate lettering (thin upstrokes, thick downstrokes) my favorite style of lettering. Also Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy by Eleanor Winters is good one for learning the history and fundamentals of copperplate lettering. This one is my favorite. Very tedious but informative. Lastly I plan to get Cindy Guentart- Baldo’s book this spring. I’ve watched a lot of her lettering videos on UA-cam. I like her lettering styles too.
Maybe start to write with the CORRECT position of your fingers on the pen, NOT as in this video (and in too much other videos!)- one MUST SEE what they write, when they write, not only guessing what is happening below their fingers! - by the way, search on UA-cam calligraphy tutorials, at start they even explain the right way to handle a pen (although this must be usually done at children 3-4 years old!!!)
I really don't understand why so many people use print for their normal handwriting. It's SO slow and clunky and hard work compared to joined-up writing.
I agree! I've tried many times to convince jr. high students of this fact, but they just simply do not see it. Now so many are typing on these devices!
Thank you Heather for some new ways to use my Erin Condren pens! I love watching your videos...never too much talking and your videos don’t take up too much time!!!!
I lost my mother October 2018. Her planner with her handwriting is a treasure to me. I will forever cherish.

Remember your planner is for you, not anyone else. Don't compare your planner to others.
And if you don’t have an old planner, photocopy a page of your current planner and use those photocopies to practice.

I'm old and shake, lol, but I find if I slow down and concentrate on what I'm doing it gets better.
Great tip to pull out old/unused planners and practice writing in the space!
I do not mind my regular handwriting but really not a fan of my cursive so I am practicing it. I am using an extra Classic planner just for handwriting. Great tips Heather!
First view! Heather Kell! I love you so much! You are such an inspiration. I just started planning this year!
I find the most useful thing like you said is just doing it! Practice makes perfect!

Thank you! I am new to planning. I will practice my printing first.
love you so glad I found you!!! I've shared you/your channel/information with friends and family!!! this is 1 of my top 10!
I'm trying not to scrawl in my planner! I jot things down so fast! 🤦♀️ I'm excited to slow down and practice. Thanks for the reminder! This was on my list to do. 😊
Thank you . I don’t like my handwriting so this helps a lot.
I love your writing but that’s not cursive lol I need to learn lettering! Haha thanks for the video
Haha I said the same thing to the screen.. in cursive you don't pick up the pen at all until you are done.
Practice, Practice, Practice!! Amen.. 👍🏾👍🏾
Pilot frixon erasable pens save my life when writing just doesn’t look right!!

@Agentfelicia, may I ask what you used to learn lettering? Books, classes, videos? 😊

Way cool! That's so super! I love it when misc skills turn into extra streams o' income! :) I hope you're enjoying the projects you get to work on.
Great video. My 2020 to do list includes learning how to lettering. BUT, how do you handle mistakes, especially one colored paper?????
On colored paper I suggest adding a sticker that yo can write in. Hope this helps. A colorful box would be great!

Do you always use just black ink???
Can you post your cursive abc?
What do you do when plans change? How do you change it or do you?

Cursive writing?
Yes, joined writing is SO much faster for taking notes than printing, but our elementary schools have stopped requiring them to learn cursive.
