Awesome review. I recently lost an expensive personally built drone due to lack of flight skill. So I recently ordered a Yi Zhan X4 from Banggood to practice with and hopefully avoid an episode like that again. I've had to retrieve my Bebop from a few precarious situations as well. I think you just convinced me to pick up on of these as well. For the money you can't beat it and having the camera is a nice added bonus too. The Yi Zhan has a lot of good reviews but one thing I noticed after watching videos is it has a very high pitched motor hum where as the Hubsan is more understated which will draw less attention and over all less annoying to fly. Anyway, keep up the good work.
Sam Gunthur An old trick. Nifty right? Another one, use the tape to write on with a sharpie, number the batteries, use them in numerical order so you you can easily keep track of which one's you've used/charged
Blunty, Many Thanks, a well done review. What a refreshing clear description you gave in this well delivered review. I am now a new subscriber! Please keep a photographers sensibility when describing and demonstrating Drones with "Cameras". I'm exhausted watch so many badly done UA-cam videos of so-called demo's of Drones with "Cameras". Most don't understand "Cameras," image quality or stability for a good picture over darting and dashing all over the place - they just want to play with Drones. I want stable images, as good as possible. An image quality that is compared to other cameras used with Drones to get an idea of what to expect. Can I get a reasonability clear picture/video while holding the Drone in a stable position while spending less then $300? What I see most of the time is nauseating jerking flying and equal horrible images and video - pointless (and Oh! Loud obnoxious music and inarticulate babble).
Thanks for this review. I saw in the video 7:25 how people have made additions to the lens of the drone..could you say how that would affect the drone's flight capabilities?
So glad someone who knows about cameras is doing drone reviews...... ALL of the other quadcopter reviewers I've seen know dick all about cameras or how to make video and give out some of THE WORST advice. ALL HAIL BLUNTY!!!!
Great review...thanks! One question....you mention (and show) that it stays level for you, however I am having some trouble with level (throttle) with the copter tending to fly up, then down, then up....This is my first nano (I have a DJI Vision 2+) so I am not sure if i should expect to have to make constant small throttle adjustments or need to adjust trim/sensitivity. Thanks again
Ehrich Weiss The DJI is pretty "dummy mode", a it does a lot of the work for you, this is so you can focus more on using it as a flying camera... THESE quads however are much less sophisticated and you actually have to develop SKILL to fly them smoothly. The "secret" is practice. (And it's your situation that is specifically why almost every self described "quadcopter expert" will tell newbies t start with something like this, to develop real piloting skills, before spending big on "fancy" drones they actually have little idea how to fly properly should something go wrong with the "dummy mode" functions).
Great video! This is so easy to fly, of course with a little experience, you will not want to attach the blade guard, as it adds to the weight and can change the flight characteristics. Ideal price, decent camera, lots of fun. I love mine.
Hi, I have been following your videos for a while, I live in Sedney as well. . could you please make a video to compare prices and performances between mini drones And if you make a tutorial about how to use the controller and basic movement that will be great too. . Also your recommendation for people who want to buy for first time to practice. . And thank you for your nice reviews
I've been wanting to get into the quadcopter hobby for some time. Wanted to start with a mini w/ a camera and work my way up. This might just fit the bill. Thanks for the review.
Hmm, that was a higher quality video then I expected for the price. I do have one question though... why was a river right there and you did not give your drone a bath? I feel this is an oversight ;)
Bought one right after watching this video! It's going to be a great first little drone I think :D I opted for the 500mAh batteries though, should give me 10 minutes for sure. Thanks Mr. Blunty
Where I live there are almost no days without a constant 7-12mph wind, would one of these be somewhat easily manageable in that for a newbie? I want to get something phantom-like eventually when they come down in price some, I saw this recommended as a starter for someone with no experience.
Blunty i'm thinking of getting a affordable drone but i am a beginner and i don't really know what drone i should get. Do you have any suggestions BTW i live in Iceland so i kinda have to order it on the internet.
didn't even finished the review but I have to tell you; it is one of the best review. you are going to the point (stability, handling and the CAMERA) Thumbs Up!
Excellent review, very well-thought out, informative and concise! You seem to be the only drone reviewer who has proper elocution. Most other reviewers just can't speak very well at all. The way you put together the shots with the narrative is also great.
Great vid Blunty. Got my X4C HD at Christmas and been loving it, unfortunately the British weather (mostly wind) hasn't been conducive to the notion of taking it out too often yet. Very much looking forward to the summer and being able to capture some nice footage. Speaking of which, the park you're recording in looks utterly beautiful, really jealous of having somewhere nice to fly at the moment.
@Blunty Very nice video, thanks for doing what you do. Obviously you had trouble with the symas in the past. But would you recommend one over the other for purely video purposes? And was any of the footage from THIS drone stabilised as well as sharpened etc? And I can't request enough your opinion / review on a gameband (minecraft). Seriously, every other review out there is crap and only goes on about its " pixel furnace" :/
The camera on both units is roughly the same, the Syma is larger so physics dictate it's a bit more stable, but the rage on the X4 is VASTLY better (you'll notice I STILL have it for instance), There was no post production stabilisation applied, very minor colour correction was used on most clips, no sharpening. And I'll never review the "Gameband" because I have utterly no use for it.
Blunty Fair enough. I'm still waiting on more money/parts but I loved my hubsan x4. I say loved because I've lost 2 already to my neighbours lush gardens. Waiting on my third from banggood. It's addictive.

Cool tip with the gaffertape!

What's the range on it??

I have one of these, and can't fly it for shit. I'm going to get it outside at some point.
x4 h107c vs x4 h107c hd. Is it worth the extra cash for the HD version?
I've been wanting to get into the quadcopter hobby for some time. Wanted to start with a mini w/ a camera and work my way up. This might just fit the bill. Thanks for the review.

Fishallies I have already sacrificed two large drones to the river gods... I feel that is sufficient tribute.
Blunty for mini drone i think micro drone 3.0 is gonna beat them all. why not make a video about best micro drones in 2015?
Beatiful city you live in :D
Thank you I really enjoyed the video.

Excellent review. You sold me.
Great review! Great views of Sydney!
Blunty, do you have any intrest in building your own quad? I've gone from a x4 to building 250 sized quad and will stick a gopro on it.
MisadventurousKipp Not at this stage. But I expect I will at some point.
