Plymouth has always been a Royal Naval Service Town, and a town with input into the Faklands war.I'm glad the Lord Mayor achieved his goal in conducting this parade. I did all my merchant marine training in Plymouth, and my ancestors were part of the town too. The city was flattened by the luftwaffe during WW2 . The Navy boys looked great on parade, and never forget that " OGGIE OGGIE OGGIE" was the original cheer of the Devonport Dockyards at Plymouth; Cor bugger Janners.
Historical facts; The Falklands were originally a pirates repair for French and British pirates for attacking Spanish galleons, (who at that time didn't know the Falklands existed) going back to Spain. The French pirates were the first there and later British pirates, the French pirates were mainly Breton who spoke a Brythonic language, the British were largely Cornish, Devonian and Welsh who spoke a very similar language (South West Devonians spoke Cornish and English in the 17th century), in fact the Cornish language was a patois of Welsh and Breton, so they got on very well. The Falklands at first were called Les Malouines after the inhabitants of St Malo in Brittany, France. and the Spanish translated Les Malouines into Los Malvinos (which means Les Malouines) on their charts. In France the Falklands are still called Les Malouines. Malouines is the name given to the habitants of St Malo, from where the pirates came from, they named the Falklands after themselves really. So, the Falklands are not or never have been Argentinian, in fact, France can claim the Falklands but legally it won't as the Falklands were claimed by French Pirates and then shared it with British pirates. The Royal Navy cleared out the pirates and colonised it as an outpost in the Anglo-Spanish wars.
In fact, the islands were used by seal hunters from several nations. The Argentine garrison was broken up by the US Navy after they had seized American sealing ships.
the good old days when we could muster an army at the drop of a hat. i was in munster germany when this all kicked off, all those who went came from forces based in the uk.
In hindsight Britain came dangerously close to losing the conflict it was an 8,000 mile trip. H.M. forces untested since Korea. If Argentina want those islands then I say try and take them again! Hopefully next time we'll see our troops marching through Argentina itself, after all we could do with another colony.
Maybe I'm biased, but I think that the British do things in a very dignified way. Even when we fought a justified war to free our own people and completely destroyed a well trained and equipped enemy in every conceivable way.... we still stay classy! Compare this with the US victory parade for Gulf war 1 (a complete cakewalk), the American troops were loaded onto the back of trucks given a flag each and chanted USA! USA! ......... I'm very glad to be a brit!
Steve, I wish there was more footage of the 'senior rates' platoon. I confess I was in it but have never seen any footage of this event where I can see myself marching. @elargentinounico1982 HOW??? When Britain first made contact with the Falklands it was a 100 years before Argentina was even a country and both Spain and Britain fought for it so goes 1. Britain 2. Spain 3. Argentina
The first colonists on the islands were french, they established a colony in 1764, the next year a british colony was established as well, after that Spain also colonized it and the french left in 1766, the brits in 1774 and the spanish in 1811. 5 years later Argentina became independent and claimed ownership over the islands, an expedition were sent in 1820 but in 1833 the british returned and drow away the few argentinian settlers and colonized the islands.
@MrBillyt12345 Quite. When it was voted for in the referendum a few decades back, it was for the EC. That was purely economic, without the frills of the ECHR and the laws passed which do not govern anything economically.
At the very beginning of the footage, the marching band is playing "The Liberty Bell", by John Philip Sousa. Why is a British band playing an American military march?
I'm argentinian and I definitely think the Falklands are British. Many people here think the same, but we cannot say it in public because if we express what we think then we are excluded from everything. Its taboo even in academic discussion, we are NOT allowed to say "I believe the Falklands are British". It may even cost one's career.
@MrBillyt12345 Sorry, I was a little unclear. What I meant was that we should wait for a few years until it is as unpopular Europewide, as will almost certainly be the case. Then we can pull it apart simply by holding a referendum. Don't get me wrong, I hate the EU too and what it is doing to all the member states. Certainly in the UK the people have woken up to it and it would be nice to get out now, but I think financially it would be slightly cheaper to wait, say until 2016 or 2017.

South American governments do give your country official diplomatic support, but they will not send troops to fight alongside you. Otherwise we might have to abide by many of the EU trading standards when trading with EU countries but have no say in how they are made. But I cannot wait for the day when the EU is consigned to the dustbin of History.
