Belgrano's sinking was only controversial amongst folk of a certain type. Her captain himself said he'd have done the same. That she was outside the exclusion zone didn't mean anything. The UK was at war with Argentina, she was an enemy war vessel and therefore could expect what she got. Certainly a tragedy, but it was a war.
The exclusion zone existed so the British would not accidentally fire on other ships from other nations passing by. It was basically a "everything inside this zone will be sunk" type of thing. It was never specified by the British government that Argentinian ships would only be sunk in the exclusion zone. It was never intended to be that way either. But some people apparently think that way lol.
The captain also admitted a few years ago that he was ordered and travelling on a course to reengage the British, and agreed it was a fully legitmate target.
@@xxnightdriverxx9576 Exactly the ROE was any vessel irrespective of nationality inside the exclusion zone can expect to be attacked without further warning by British forces. All Argentinian military vessels not actually inside the territorial waters of a neutral country were also fair game.
@@xxnightdriverxx9576 It's because any ship entering the exclusion zone that wasn't british would be viewed as trying to resupply the argentinians, the argies weren't safe anywhere, they'd be attack anywhere, again people need to realize the exclusion zone was never intended for the argentinians, it was intended to keep civilian vessels and foreign countries vessels safe and away from the fighting or they'd run the risk of being attacked, if an argentinian vessel sailed towards the uk and entered uk homeland waters, that vessel would be attacked aswell, the argentinians even tried to attack gibraltar during their failed Operation Algeciras. My father was a conscript, sent to fight for Argentina in the Falklands War. The stories he's told me, from the Argentinian perspective, are legitimately bone chilling. From the fact that a bunch of severely undertrained young adults were forcibly being sent to fight an organized opponent, to the number of broken weapons many were being giving, to the INTENTIONAL drugging of foods being provided to them in order to calm the fear many experienced as they feared for the worst knowing all the odds stacked against them. And all because a deeply corrupt government wanted to curry support from it's citizens. I wasn't born until long after the war, but I still don't get how many Argentineans still care so much for the island, young and old. I can maybe get why people at the time felt so strongly for them (given all the propaganda being spread), but in this day in age, with all the info out there, I don't get it. Even my dad, who admittedly is still very bitter about the war, states that most of his anger now lies more with the Argentine government then it does with the British.

We have human rights organizations like "Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo (Grandmas of Plaza de Mayo)" and "Madres de Plaza de Mayo (Mothers of Plaza de Mayo)" which are dedicated to look for lost children who have been given to other families. Another interesting story from this conflict is the one of the UK's forward air attacks by RAF Avro Vulcan Bombers. They were I believe transported to the ascension islands and then flew to the Falklands, being refueled by Handley Paige Victor Carrier/Bombers - which also had to be refueled in the air in an incredibly complex operation. It's called Operation Black Buck, and it's a really interesting story of Thatcher's desire to keep the island, and of the ingenuity of the RAF engineers and pilots to make it happen.
It was an interesting operation, logistically and technically impressive, and also a really stupid waste of resources :D I love the Vulcan in general and love the style points for managing to get non-naval aircraft over Argentina but it achieved almost nothing, knew in advance it was likely to achieve almost nothing and significantly added to the workload of the sea harriers at a time when they were fairly critical to the overall success of the invasion. As someone who didn't live through it, didn't have to make any of the decisions etc I like that it happened, makes for interesting history to learn about, but I think had I been part of the Navy I'd have been very unimpressed.
I remember once seeing an interview with an Argentinian soldier who defended one of the mountains and his opinion on the British he fought. Loosely he put it., They truly were terrifying, They screamed en mass non stop like a crowd of football fans out for blood coming up the mountain. No matter how much we shot at them they kept coming and wouldn't stop, none of us expected them to charge in close with bayonets but they did. Shortly after that we chose to surrender as they were either very brave or mad. I think they were a little surprised the British had a bit more enthusiasm to fight then them but I suppose that's the difference between hard trained troops and disinterested conscripts.

So what you're saying is, Britain: - Discovered it before the Spanish - Occupied it before the Spanish - Never gave up their claim to the island - Controlled it unopposed for a century - Won a literal war to maintain control of the island - 99% of residents identify as British And Argentina: - Just kinda appointed a mayor out of nowhere - Completely ignored it for a century - Literally invaded the island by force - When that failed their only claim is just saying "yeah but it's still ours lol" I wooonder whose island this is...
The islands were uninhabited for thousands of years by the time the Europeans got there, Argentina's main claim for the Islands is that they are closer to Argentina then the UK.
Well they also sometimes use the "but it was a Spanish Colonial territory" which to be fair it was for a time but for some reason they think that any land close to them that was Spanish =theirs even though it wasn't controlled by them at the time of their split from spain
One thing you have not mentioned is the French discovered the islands one year before the English did, an Island which was then bought and administered under the rule of the Spanish Empire, after the war of independence the argentinians relocated themselves to a land which was part of Spain and THEN the British invaded the Islands "legitimately" claiming a land they did not dicover nor were the first ones to occupy, Argentina also never gave up their claim to the islands. Winning a war against a nation doesn't make it seem more legitimate and although it's fair 99% of residents are British it just makes more sense and would be historically more accurate if the Falkland Islands were part of Argentina
Also most of the men fighting for Malvinas were barely 18 years old, had no training whatsoever and some didn't even know how to carry a gun. Some weren't even given guns. They were sent there knowing they wouldn't come back, that they had no way of winning, food, or even water. One of the argentinian soldiers spoke in my school one day and told us about when he was captured. He said that the british were expecting highly trained soldiers and pilots, but when they saw they were young, starving boys, they all felt bad, and even gave them food and comfort. He said that he hadn't had water or food in days, and tried to drink water from a puddle on the floor. One of the british soldiers ran to him and gave him water from his own flask. I feel like we often forget this wasn't Argentina vs. Britain, it was politicians versus politicians making the soldiers and civilians pay.
Yes, but normally there's a sense of "we're theatened, let's defend ourselves" involved, in this case, according to what i know, no one on either side wanted this war to happen, and even politicians didn't care for the islands, they just wanted to gain popularity. So I guess what I'm saying is that it was more extreme in this case, but yes, that's sadly what always happens
Sofi Mendez Well it was more like the Argentinas were suffering, and not the Brittish. I mean the brits were just defending there own islands and had supplies. The Argentinains on the other hand, as you said, didn't have supplies. So I feel like it was MOSTLY the Argetinas who were suffering from the dictatorship.
Let me then ask, what is the point of actually sending them there if they know they can't win? If you think that it was just to pretend to or try to put up a bit of a fight, then maybe it shows Argentina sacrifices its people for the good of the rest. In war you fight to win, not send other people to fight to defend your honour. Yes you may say it was just British politicians sending soldiers to do the same, but at least they were properly trained, ready to fight to win a war, not just to be sacrificed in order for their country to uphold its honour.

The argentine navy was never safe apart from if they were staying in another countries port but even then they'd have been told to leave anyway.

Honestly, as an Argentinian, we had it coming. Many young, untrained boys were sent to fight. They weren't treated very nicely to say the least. We also should address the political climate in Argentina at the time. People who opposed the government were killed or "disappeared". This war was a distraction from what was going on. The effects of this dictatorship are still felt to this day and people are still looking for their lost family members. We have human rights organizations like "Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo (Grandmas of Plaza de Mayo)" and "Madres de Plaza de Mayo (Mothers of Plaza de Mayo)" which are dedicated to look for lost children who have been given to other families. Our history is, as I like to describe it, a rollercoaster.

@Brisca Legends That's true, you are entitled to have your own opinion. But please remember that the government and the people are two separate things. Don't discriminate or see Argentinians in a bad light because of what the government decided to do, specially considering the people in power at that time were dictators. The people protested, but were silenced; young boys were sent to war where they didn't even have enough food to function properly; and many people lost their dear family members -and this is much more common than you might think, a close friend of mine is still looking for her aunt-. It's a sad part of our history, and many people blame the British and turn a blind eye towards the government, because that's what we're taught in schools.

TheNinjaBoyGamingDoesntDoGaming ThisIsACreativeName what bloody aircraft carriers ?
Another interesting story from this conflict is the one of the UK's forward air attacks by RAF Avro Vulcan Bombers. They were I believe transported to the ascension islands and then flew to the Falklands, being refueled by Handley Paige Victor Carrier/Bombers - which also had to be refueled in the air in an incredibly complex operation. It's called Operation Black Buck, and it's a really interesting story of Thatcher's desire to keep the island, and of the ingenuity of the RAF engineers and pilots to make it happen.
It was an interesting operation, logistically and technically impressive, and also a really stupid waste of resources :D
I love the Vulcan in general and love the style points for managing to get non-naval aircraft over Argentina but it achieved almost nothing, knew in advance it was likely to achieve almost nothing and significantly added to the workload of the sea harriers at a time when they were fairly critical to the overall success of the invasion.

Fatmandoobius The Bayonet charge was at Tumble down right? Do you know which regiments took part? I’ve heard that recount as well, I think it was also tumble down where a piper played his bagpipes on one of the hills after the battle. So glorious.
You know it's not true they were all conscripts, Argentinian marines bolstered by special forces defended those mountains.

So what you're saying is,
Britain:
- Discovered it before the Spanish
- Occupied it before the Spanish
- Never gave up their claim to the island
- Controlled it unopposed for a century
- Won a literal war to maintain control of the island
- 99% of residents identify as British
And Argentina:
- Just kinda appointed a mayor out of nowhere
- Completely ignored it for a century
- Literally invaded the island by force
- When that failed their only claim is just saying "yeah but it's still ours lol"
I wooonder whose island this is...
The islands were uninhabited for thousands of years by the time the Europeans got there, Argentina's main claim for the Islands is that they are closer to Argentina then the UK.
Honestly, in 90% of all of British occupied regions everyone there is considered British
@@TheRedKnight101that’s it, that’s their only defense
Sofi Mendez Isn't that pretty much what every war is? Politicans vs Politicans?
Nat Games But the Argetinians didn't think the Brittish would do anything.
