DIY Wireless Charger Install In Toyota Tacoma

  • New Tacomas have wireless charging built in, so of course I didn't want to be left behind! So I installed my own wireless charger in my truck. It was a pretty easy process and only took about an hour or two to fully install. Make sure to test the circuits you are going to use and ensure that they only give power to the charger when the vehicle is turned on (such as the ACC circuit), that way your battery isn't ran down while the vehicle isn't running. Leave any questions in the comment section down below, and don't forget to subscribe!
    *CORRECTION: Wireless charging has been around since 2012, the Lumia 920 had it, as well as the Nexus 4. My mistake*
    HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED:
    Wireless Charger:
    www.amazon.com...
    Add-A-Circuit:
    www.amazon.com...
    *The Add-A-Circuit should match the same type of fuse that you vehicle uses. The one linked above matched the 2005-2015 Toyota Tacoma, and maybe newer, but verify what type you have before you buy the Add-A-Circuit*
    12V Power Socket:
    www.amazon.com...
    *You won't need the fuse included with the socket as you are already putting an extra fuse in with the add-a-circuit*
    Car Charger (Anker):
    www.amazon.com...
    Extra Wire:

      Thanks! The add-a-circuit fuse should prevent any electrical surges, and the car charger regulates that amperage going to the charging pad. That should prevent any fire causing hazards. It would be just like keeping a car charger plugged into a cigarette outlet.

    Great video brother, FYI the add a circuit needs to be less than the original fuse, so fuse you tapped was 7.5 you should get a 5 amp fuse, the danger is that if it over heats because the original fuse is less than the 10 amp you put it, it may not blow. Just an FYI as it could potentially be a fire hazard. Once again though great video.

    I would use a 5amp to feed the new circuit. Hot glue gun for QI charging case to Toyota plastic? One wrap of 2" vinyl tape for 12v to USB plug. Also run a second. USB cord and leave tucked up under neath the trim for future use. Great project. Be sure to use high speed QI wireless charging to future proof the mod.

    Sweet video. I just got all the parts in to do the install, although I'm not well versed in electric wiring. I was wondering if you could expand a bit more on how you are connecting the new power wire to the existing cigarette lighter wire, as well as how I attatch the grounding wire to the factory grounding point?

    • @BraxenMcConnell
      @BraxenMcConnell  6 років тому

      Yeah! So the power wire comes straight from the ACC fuse (that’s the point where I use the add-a-circuit) That power wire connects to the power wire of the new cigarette outlet. The ground that comes from the cigarette outlet just goes to any ground on the truck, I just used the one that was closest. You can use an eyelet connector or something like that to connect the ground. Does that help?

    • @mylesduncan1532
      @mylesduncan1532 6 років тому

      Ok, yea that makes sense. I noticed you linked 18 AWG wire, however, wouldn't it make sense to use 16 AWG to extend the wire behind the steering wheel since the add a fuse wire is 16 AWG and so is the new cigarette outlet (even though it looks bigger)?

    • @BraxenMcConnell
      @BraxenMcConnell  6 років тому

      Yeah, you could use 16 to match it up with the add-a-circuit and the cigarette outlet if you wanted to. There is a pretty small difference between 16 and 18, so you’ll be fine with either one, I think 18 was just what I had on hand, so I just searched that.

    Why do you need the cigarette lighter? I'm kinda a moron but I do want this capability. You got power coming out of that and a circuit into a fuse why not straight out of the fuse configuration right in to the charger? And I missing something? Also if it were me I'd have that thing always powered. It's never going to be enough to draw too much on the battery, in fact I'm wondering if those things even draw at all without a phone sitting on top of that? And thirdly if you do want that thing powered only in certain circumstances, why not have it in an always hot fuse slot, then into one of the empty rocker switches on the council under the heater in 1 of those empty rocker slots there's your switch then run it into the charger itself put it back together, then your only charging when you flip that rocker switch? Plus they make funny switches like ejection seat or stun gun or rocket propulsion. Lol they make several of those funny ones!

    • @thehamburglar9mm
      @thehamburglar9mm 6 років тому

      Relocating next to the single cup holder would have solved both problems. just sayin...

    • @BraxenMcConnell
      @BraxenMcConnell  6 років тому +1

      I thought about that, but that creates a different set of problems. Yes you could see notifications, but every turn you take sends your phone sliding in a different direction. Plus, a phone only charges wirelessly while it’s on the pad. So even if you get a notification, you would have to remove your phone from the charging pad, thus stopping the charge, just to look at the notification. So it almost defeats the purpose of using the charger because it’s just on and off the whole time, and since wireless charging is so much slower than wired, you’d probably end up losing battery throughout your drive. Sure, I could put a rubber mat or something down to stop it from sliding, but I wanted an OEM look, so slapping a ghetto looking rubber mat on top wasn’t what I wanted. The plastic by the single cup holder is also thicker. So it would have been harder to cut down, and the phone would have a harder time picking up the charging signals being emitted by the wireless charging pad. Especially with a case on it. So I went with the option that suited my project best. And that was putting it where the plastic was thinner, and it could be completely hidden. That way if I removed it down the line, there wouldn’t be any evidence of it there. Also, all the “ghetto electronics” you’re referring to, are actually in front of the air bag control module, not on top of.
