Hi Maangchi! i just made this for my family tonight. It was marinated overnight, and the taste is heavenly!! we all agreed no more korean restaurant Galbi for us. It's much cheaper to make this at home :) Happy happy. Thank you for your recipe :)
Are the pears making the short ribs tender? I did mine without adding the pears. And it came out tough. I bought the ribs from Korean supermarket. Any suggestions on how to make it tender?
I love this recipe! As a meat cutter, we call thin sliced short ribs "flanken" (not to be confused with flank steak). Just wanted to pass that along to all the viewers. I can't wait to try this recipe out. I've been wanting to try my hand at Korean cooking and I now have my new teacher! Thank you, Maangchi! You are awesome!!!! -Dan
I make this about once a month, my family loves it!! I just need to get your cookbook. Next I'm going to make your Kimchee. I love watching your videos, they're very easy to follow. Happy New Year!!
Your recipe s simple, easy to follow and combines a fantastic set of ingredients. I taught in Korea in Kang Nam Ku for almost two years and this is one of the BEST recipes for me thus far......! Well done Ajumoni!
Winner…good kalbi!!! I made this and cooked it at the beach for picnic lunch…..that was the best tasting food along with kimchee and rice ball thank you. You are the best!!!!! I love your personality…very meaningful and respectful to your cooking….
Pan-frying should work well, but cook it over high heat (gas). Heat up your pan very high heat before cooking. The grill was given by my friend when I lived in Toronto Canada. Check out any Asian grocery store. Happy cooking!
Making this for the second year in a row for our Korean BBQ party tomorrow for New Year's Eve. Thank you so much Maangchi for being such a huge part of my life and cuisine!!!!
I've been going to a Korean Resturant at least twice a week and if I order this dish, my meal is easily over $20. Thanks to you, I can save a little money now and make some on my own. Not to worry, you can still count on me going out for Korean Food. Thanks again!
Thank you! I am such a big fan and have been watching for years. There is nothing wrong with the current videos but I watch your videos sometimes because I miss home and I just want to feel like my mom is closer. It would be great to have your current editing and video quality to some of your older and very important work. I just moved to a city with very little Korean food so these videos have become so important now! Thanks Manngchi!
That was awesome!!! I enjoy how you aren't afraid to put your hands right in your food when you are cooking and also not afraid to eat on camera. You are very entertaining and I enjoyed very much!
The LA style galbi was a hit with the family! The marinade for the short ribs was really easy to make and delicious, but I have to say that the ssam-jjang was particularly tasty. During these times when we can't visit our regular restaurants as often as we would like, it's been great to try out your recipes. I would say that they are better than restaurant quality!
Maangchi, I keep noticing that you’ve used the same knife for almost 10 years and it ha held up perfectly. I realize your skills with a knife are superior, but I am in need of a good knife, something like the one you use. Would you mind sharing what the name of that fantastic knife is? I’d appreciate it it greatly. And thank you for introducing me to Korean cooking. I’m in love with nearly every recipe you share. You’re a fantastic chef!
When I was about 5, my father worked for a Korean family in NYC. We were invited to a feast I still have pictures of. They graciously gave him a recipe for Calbi. It's been about 30 years and we make it every summer.
Hi, everybody, thank you very much for your encouraging comments! I'm working on my written recipe now. The detailed recipe including the dipping sauce, photos, ingredients, and tips will be posted soon on my website. Thank you again!
Actually I've watched this video so many times and I've tried also so many times the way Maanchi shows us to marinate the beef for babecue and believe me it is sooooo delicious. Thank you Maanchi.
I made your recipe today and it was SO good! I broiled it. It turned out so tender. I just wish the LA galbi meat wasn't so expensive at the store. Great recipe, thanks again!
Bulgogi is beef sliced thinly, marinated, and cooked. LA galbi is LA style cut beef ribs, marinated, and cooked. Both use the same marinade. So you can use this marinade for bulgogi. Check out the recipe on my website please.
she mentions in the decription that you can use a pan but i'm sure a normal grill will also works fine, just buy some sort of grill mat first so the meat doesn't fall through. If you really want to use what she is, you should be able to find it at a large asian grocery store like H Mart.
Oh wow, Korean BBQ beef is one of my favorites but I never knew how it was made. You are such a good cook, I'm sure that you have a very happy family if you cook like that for them, and I knew that you would bite into the pear core as that's what I would have done too. Thanks so much for the great post :-)
I made this for my roommate to celebrate finishing her MCAT. She is Korean-American. It was so good she said she felt like she was eating at home :-) Thank you so much!
i love eating Korean food! I'm living in Korea at the moment so Im in heaven haha....I seriously don't understand how people just don't like Korean food....it's so delicious!
in my opnion, galbi source also used to make pork barbeque in Korean. actally in korea, korean restaurants have many soy souce fork barbeque menu. so you can apply this receipe to general fork dish
Hi, do you know where I can get the perilla leaves, and do you know if they are purple or yellow perilla ( think it's the flower type).need it for a medicinal reason also. Thank you. Love your show. Makes me smile and your recipes make my hubby smile😁
Maangchi, what is that song I keep hearing in the video? I think this would make a fantastic song for dancing while the ribs chill in the refrigerator.
Randall, I was thinking the same thing. I used to sell Mexican foods in street fairs when I used to live in LA, so much work and preparation. My idea is to sell the BBQ Korean ribs or beef sticks with Korean sauce. We've been buying the meat from Costco put without the bones and the fat, you should try it, it takes pretty good.
easily found on Amazon using "Korean bbq grill", you might have to scroll down a little bit to find something that looks similar or you could go to a korean grocery store like H Mart and try your luck there.

That galbi looks soooooooo good! The hose is also very charming with a TV personality. She reminds me of Karen Walker (Megan Mullally) from Will & Grace, the Korean version. haha.
Maangchi! It's so nice to watch you cook, thank you for uploading videos on youtube. Your spirit and excitement makes it fun for me again. :) Thank you thank you!
You said in your blog post that Koreans "innovated" this cut of rib. This cut is a common beef rib cut called "flanken". It's commonly used in Mexican cuisine long before Koreans started making their mark on American cuisine. I actually get mine "LA Kalbi" ribs from my nearest Mexican grocery store (because it's closer than the Korean one).

yes, I think most pears would work well as long as they are soft ripe.
Are the pears making the short ribs tender? I did mine without adding the pears. And it came out tough. I bought the ribs from Korean supermarket. Any suggestions on how to make it tender?

Yay, I'm so happy to hear that! Continued good luck with your Korean cooking!
Not only do I love your recipes but I admire your cleanliness! Thank you for emphasizing each time!
if you rub a little vegetable oil on the sides of your measuring cup, the honey doesn't stick. It just pours out ^_^
Wow you are really clever!
Non-stick spray it basically just oil.
^_^
Or if you measure out sesame oil first? :D
I like her finger better!
Pan-frying should work well, but cook it over high heat (gas). Heat up your pan very high heat before cooking. The grill was given by my friend when I lived in Toronto Canada. Check out any Asian grocery store. Happy cooking!
Thank you so much for your interest in my videos! Cheers!
It should be tender. Marinate it overnight or even longer. The crushed pear from the marinade will tenderize meat.
Making this for the second year in a row for our Korean BBQ party tomorrow for New Year's Eve. Thank you so much Maangchi for being such a huge part of my life and cuisine!!!!

Wow! Made these tonight. Best short ribs ever! 11/10. Thanks, Maangchi
I made your recipe today and it was SO good! I broiled it. It turned out so tender. I just wish the LA galbi meat wasn't so expensive at the store. Great recipe, thanks again!

I made this today, it was very tasty! I had a lot of sauce left over; can I use it for other dishes? It seems a waste not to reuse it.
it could probably be used with other meats too but i'd worry about contamination if left alone too long. you could even try it with vegetables.
Hi, do you know where I can get the perilla leaves, and do you know if they are purple or yellow perilla ( think it's the flower type).need it for a medicinal reason also. Thank you. Love your show. Makes me smile and your recipes make my hubby smile😁

You wash and handle things like a real cook or as I say my mom. I love the way how you handle the ingredients
I love this woman.
They are about 1/4 inch thick, so they will cook quickly.
Maangchi, what is that song I keep hearing in the video? I think this would make a fantastic song for dancing while the ribs chill in the refrigerator.
JiraiyaNoSannin I want to know too. I think the artist is Casker.
Song: Casker - Doll (캐스커 - 인형)

Can I use regular apple instead of Asian pear?
Yes you can , and it taste great
Abdullah Hafiz You can, but carbonated sodas or a kiwi would make it even more tender because of the acidity
Some korean folks i know in usa just pour 7up on it instead of fruit juice
I recommend you to use Kiwis instead of Pears. Both make meat tender.
Hello from Guam!I love this recipe and can't wait to try it out. This is my favorite to eat with korean potato salad.I wanted to ask you if I can substitute pear juice for the fruit.

Hi Maangchi! When I tried the onion taste was too overpowering...in this case, may I know how I can rectify it to make it better? Is it suppose to taste sweet? Because mine didn't taste sweet at all.
