Strong winds and a letter of warning in the Cook Islands

  • Our feelings about the Cook Islands are a bit torn.
    Aitutaki was beautiful! So was Rarotonga, but because of all the bureaucracy we did not see much and basically just wanted to sail away from that port as fast as possible. We even got a letter of warning, since we did not send an email before we arrived..
    It is not always easy to sail around the world (all sailors do not have internet onboard).
    We hope you will enjoy it!

    I'm sorry you had the bad memories from Rarotonga,it all sounds very confusing,almost corrupt,charging you so much money.
    Anyway,your next stop looked much more pleasant.
    Nice to see you again,Hilda seems to be going well,no more problems 👍😊

      So are we, but in the other hand. We loved Palmerston, which was our next and last stop in the Cook Islands 😊 We were in the Pacific in almost a year and sadly, in some countries we felt that there was a lot of corruption. Of course we want to pay, but we want to know that the money goes to the right purpose.
      We had the problems a few moths after this episode, but we are now in the Philippines and everything is fine. Thank you! 👍😊

    Excellent. Loved the footage. The anchoring sounded scary. Wendy and I once motored around for 4 hours until daylight when we didn't know exactly where we needed to be. That was the longest 4 hours I can remember.

      @@HilmaSailing It sucked, but we were glad we did it after the fact. Hope you guys are doing well. We're literally packing for our return to Greece right new and Wendy and I are sewing sunshades and curtains madly in advance of our departure. There's going to be a pile of boxes at the marina when we get there too. It'll be like Christmas!

    Part of the reason for the 24 hour advance notice is that there is a height restriction as the airport flight path is also directly over the port and anything above 27 meters high ( I think that is the limit) is put in certain places so that there is no obstruction of the flight path. There is supposed to be a new area being built that will eliminate that problem. There is also a problem with typhoons at certain times of the year and the port is closed to non-commercial traffic. The last thing is the custom's people want to inspect your boat prior to your arrival in the port proper.

    $350 ...wow..we went the ought the Pacific 2008-2013, and we were put out when a place charged money at all! Sounds like things are changing even there. Just checked in to South Africa and not only did they not even want paperwork from prior country, but no charges. I hope all you guys in the Pacific will express some resistance or at least annoyance with these charges so that when we go again, it won’t be a million bucks! Enjoy your videos!

    • @HilmaSailing
      @HilmaSailing  5 років тому

      Oh, it seems like it have changed a lot then! We think it had been quite frustrating in a lot of countries the last year and in many countries we have paid so much. In some (many) places you also have to pay extra if you want to go somewhere els than to the main port of clearance. It is different everywhere and it seems to change from day to day almost. Hard to keep up ☺️
      Thank you! ☺️

      @@HilmaSailing haha, Europe is no picnic either, my friends got caught speeding in Switzerland on bmws1000rr and lost license for 6 months, 8k euro fine. Ouch ☠️🐒, I say come to Alaska, no sales tax,no state income tax, $40 register car, boat, etc. If car is 7 years old you get permanent registration. But things are changing globally, nowhere will be safe from progressive tax,fee Nazi's. Fair sailing to you and your beautiful wife.😁👍❤️

    The problems you had in the Cook Islands especially Rarotonga worry me and should not go unreported.They have a self government but in close association with New Zealand.Please lay an official complaint about your treatment and your payments with the New Zealand government.Love your photos and actual sailing content.

    • @HilmaSailing

      Yes it is sad and from what we have experienced the last year, it is not uncommon 🙁 Of course we want to pay, but we want to know that the money goes to the right purpose and we want to know what we are paying for. Yes, we will look into that and hopefully it will be an help for future sailors.

    It’s encouraged not to chase after whales in Australia there are strict rules preventing this
    However if you just stop moving - drop the sails or stop motoring
    The hump back whales will often come to you
    So just chill and they can become very friendly it seems like they are very inquisitive and almost want to say hi

    • @HilmaSailing
      @HilmaSailing  5 років тому

      We always try to keep distance and leave them space so we won't scare them, but thank you for the tip and we will be extra careful in the future. We have had some close encounters when we have sailed and also stayed at moorings so that is probably why. ☺️

      We are afraid of that too. If you know for sure the money goes to the right place it's most often ok, but usually we have no proof at all and it feels a bit sad.
      Last time we asked "Why does it cost this much to stay here for 5 days?" we got the answer "Because you are white".. This was in Pohnpei in Micronesia where we paid 150USD and that was the cost only for that state... They said it was the same in every state but in Yap we only payed 55USD in total.. Wierd ;)
