- Is the Dodge Demon 170 no competition against the Lucid Air?
After watching @Hagerty video about the Lucid Air Sapphire destroying the 2023 Dodge Demon 170, some things about the video appear to be off. Once you really pay attention to the video, you'll see some massive glaring issues that set up the Demon 170 to have no chance. From the settings to configuration to even the fuel are all issues I found. In this video we'll see all the screenshots to show how the Demon 170 was setup from the beginning to fail and made to look bad.

Fun fact. The demon driver is a well known driver and dodge representative on the side. A all wheel drive 1400hp car is supposed to beat a rwd..less hp car smh.

My name is Anthony Esposito. I direct all of the content featuring Jason Cammisa for Hagerty. Simply put, this race was not rigged in any shape or form. We worked with both Dodge and Lucid directly to source the cars and maximize their performance on both surfaces. Dodge wanted to give the 170 its absolute best chance at beating the Lucid and went the extra mile to put us in contact with Tom Bailey. They chose Tom to represent them and extract the best time from that car. They did not have any press cars to offer us, so they sourced one through the Radford racing school. The Demon showed up on the carbon wheels (as you will see if you freeze frame at 11:34 in our episode) and with a full tank of E85 fuel. It’s important to understand, the race you’re witnessing was run 20-30 times in order to A) establish a clear winner B) collect data from which Jason can pull to aid in his storytelling and crucially C) to film the action from as many angles as possible. This is how you’re able to watch from a drone’s perspective for instance without seeing any mounted cameras on the car. When you’re pausing on the insert of the tach, the 170 had already run through an entire tank of E85 fuel racing the Lucid and we did not have access to E85 on site to refuel it. The fastest number of the day had already been captured during a run where the Demon was on E85 at full power. Regarding the runs at the drag strip, we were only planning to have Tom run down the track 3 times against the Lucid. He could not get anywhere near Dodge’s claimed figures (of course running at full power on E85) which is why we allowed him to run another ELEVEN times. He tried every trick he had throughout the day to lower the 170's times. Please understand, our entire team did everything we could to give the Demon its absolute best shot at beating the Lucid. Hagerty has nothing to gain or lose from rigging the race. In fact, it should be fairly obvious that had the cars run closer together, it would have made for a more compelling story. But unfortunately that’s just not what happened on the day.
Thank you for the easy to understand explanation and for answering the questions in the video. I don't believe y'all tried to put the Demon at a disadvantage. In fact, even with the few changes Butter is claiming necessary, I doubt the Demon would've stood a chance either way. It's clear that the Sapphire is just that damn quick.

Lies and your a paid bullshitter, it’s supposed to say E85 on the dash, not E20 fool. The gauge is in real time, Doug demuro review it. Go to the same drag strip dodge used, and look at the screenshot it’s says E20. It can’t unleash the full 1000hp

Hagerty worked with Dodge and Dodge doesn’t care so it’s not like any of this matters.
I was definitely expecting the 170 to do better than it did, but let's call a spade a spade. Even if they'd has the Demon in optimal settings, it wasn't beating the Sapphire. Them being at Willow Springs at 2500 ft doesn't help for a drag race either. Temps are regularly over 100 at that track during the summer (currently 104 there rn). The road surface isn't great for launching a high hp rwd car either. These are things I noticed that I didn't like about this versus because those are all in favor of an EV that isn't affected by any of that. That said though, unless you've got close to perfect conditions, the 170 isn't beating the Sapphire. The Dragtimes video was definitely a much better representation of real world conditions and results in this heat. Still waiting to see someone with a Sapphire link up with Demonology.
Exactly. Mopar in their feelings. The demon149 isn’t even going to break the 8.9 because that was just a unicorn run and it wouldn’t happen again anytime soon.
The fact is you have to do too much to the Demon to get it down the track. All wheel drive is the ticket with big horsepower. Blame it on editing for video discrepancies. Quit crying about the Demon loosing. 😭😭😭😭 On the street your going to line up at the light and start changing tires, get E85 fuel, take out seats, lower air pressure, etc… in order to run a race. The air will take flight and leave the Demon wanting. Also you can drive the Air to and from the track with room for 5 folks.

Stop making excuses. The Lucid didn't have slicks and weights 1000lbs more and it would beat ANY 170s period. Settings and amount of gas in the tank won't make any difference. Dodge is the one that lied to you.
Is all wheel drive and being heavy helps it off the line because if you have garbage grip you still get traction if there’s enough weight on the tires like this Race on paper maybe makes more sense but in the real world it’s not fair honestly a more fair race would have been a 2020 gt500 and even then it wouldn’t be close because in the real world’s any hellcat and demon needs to be on a preped surface to run its fastest times 🤷🏽♂️

Fixing all of this stuff would not have made a difference. The reality is the Demon 170 has to have absolutely perfect conditions, on a absolutely perfectly prepped surface, and driven by an absolutely perfect driver to get anywhere near its claimed 8 second quarter mile lol. Just like its predecessors, it's a massive engine strapped to a rental car body with horrendous engineering. It is what it is. Cool ass car, but will never be fast in real world conditions.

@SilentStorm21 when I say fast I mean in comparison to it's peers which are production vehicles that makes similar power. They aren't many and while most of them are significantly more expensive, it shows in their engineering that they are actually able to put the power down. Is the Demon 170 actually slow? Absolutely not. It just can't compete with its peers.

Not sure about his demon149 can actually perform. He said his car doesn’t feel right at high speed. I would bet his demon would never ever race at all given the issues most of these lemon149s have.

Took my challenger to the dealer I purchased it from because of the backup camera being glitchy or "not available ". Told me it would be a 2 hour job. That turned into 2 days. I left after because I had to go to work and I live an hour away. I started asking about a car to drive while it's being "diagnosed". Which they said they didn't have any. A car lot with no cars. A tech said there is a recall coming for the "radio" that could be it.... Complete waste of time. Hello Capital CDJR of Indian Trail. Seriously thanks to TK, OC, and Butta for doing what they do. Seems like the 170 was almost a second slower than Dodge claimed. And it also seems that no matter the driver, prep, or track, it's almost impossible to get one in the 8s, which would have dragged the Lucid, though it still wouldn't have mile an houred it.
Whatevers, whatever.. no matter what you guys say the Lucid WILL beat the Demon 170 in 99% of situations. All this whining is crazy. It was a BAD INVESTMENT..
There's a few things that could do with a rebuttal here :
the car choice.. Jason (the host) has gone on record saying manufacturers are unwilling to lend them cars for this kind of comparative racing ,. which resulted in them needing to source cars form elsewhere. (If dodge wanted to have the best possible results they should of supplied a demon with the options you listed)
As for the fuel, the crew try to insure the viewer never sees the camera in the video s, which means more takes for essential B roll. (the shot of the gauge cluster,), so filling the tabk with regular fuel for less important scenes and transport would be a way of cutting costs, You said it yourself that a few passes would drain the tank and the shoot would most likely take multiple days and several runns.
I cannot explain the use of auto mode other then maybe a requirement by Radford to not break the car. I will freely admit i have no clue there.
My final point is just a question why would they want the demon to lose in the way it did? it's already well established that electric cars are dominant in the quarter . from a narrative perspective a closer race would be more compelling..
I will point out 3 things so you don't just assume my bias . I think hagerty's black ghost video showed a severe lack of research, the video on the cyber truck seemed to gloss over several issues and lucid do sponsor Jason's,(the hosts) podcast which could result in a vested interest in the lucid performing well but that could be done without rigging the test.

When I watched the Hagerty race, I didn’t see a clip of the Demon 170 with a head start to show how fast the Sapphire is. I wanted to know how capable the Sapphire would be to catch the Demon 170.

Let’s be honest here demonology even said out of his own mouth that car is really fast lucid air. You can do all of the things to the 170 and it will still lose why because of the offline. Plus the lucid air weigh a 1000 pounds more and you speaking on some things the 170 have to do to take away some weight

Racer X ran his Demon 170 with a stripped out interior and still could only do a 9.3 at best.
His engine also let go and his was trapping far less than other 170s. It’s a data point but I don’t think it proves anything.
Racer x also doesn’t have the carbon fiber wheels which Dodge said is a key component to run the advertised 8.9
Hagerty was paid by Lucid to promote Lucid. Hagerty 3 years ago compared a aftermarket bolt on fuel injection/ Throttle Body injection conversion system to a carburetor. The fuel injection made significantly more power EVERYWHERE. But.....the carbureted engine was not running good needing plugs wires and it was neglected. That was the baseline. When bolting on the FI system all the worn ignition parts were replaced at the same time the CI system was installed. Simply put Hagerty gets paid to promote a product and this they sabotage the performance of the side that is NOT PAYING THEM.
I don’t think Hegarty set the car up to fail, I think they just didn’t care. The point of the video was to get views not to determine bragging rights on who makes the fastest 1/2 mile car.
This ain't the first time the Demon 170 has gotten its ass kicked by an EV. The Lucid has every advantage it could've had. It's AWD, it has 1200hp, it has instant torque.
And it's not just EVs, less powerful ICE cars have raced the Demon and gapped it.
Auto mode is actually economy mode in my Demon 170. In my Hellcat Economy mode is only 500hp. Under E-75 it FOR SURE drops down to 900hp. But why would Radford a Driving School that bought 3000 drag racing school experiences for Demon 170 owners participate in slandering Dodges name?

Yes, you make a valid point and an argument, but I am sorry there is no situation with the demon 170 would’ve beaten lucid. The sapphire is the only production car that out run a Tesla plaid. I am a car guy. There is no way the demon could do it. The lid has more torque and more power and more drive wheels and everything you may have found some details in the videos, but it would not have mattered, any weather condition any track the lid would stomp it?

Lucid still wins. Its been proven time and time again that the 170 is incredibly difficult to run the claimed times by dodge and pass after pass they run slower.
Demonology will give us a great opportunity to see what a real race will look like between the two. If there’s anyone that could beat the Lucid it’s him.

Good catch I watched the video too and thought it was fraudulent. Although the EV has 200 more horse power and AWD I think it would have won any way the races would have been closer.

1. Extra seat weight
2. Heavier wheels
3.fake E85, screenshot of E20
4.auto mode on.
5. No test runs video by itself, showing them trying to get the best times
6. Auto mode has traction on, no need for traction control on a real prep surface.
7. Why would dodge lie about numbers? It’s billion dollar company, that’s only making 3300 of these muscle cars, no need for them to lie about their numbers!!
8. That drag strip sucks, they sprayed oil for the demon to slip off the line.
9. Too many promotions and ads on the demon advertising so bullshit racing shop.
10. Bare any details about this version of demon wasn’t talked about.
That race was a hit piece on the demon 170. The demon was already at a disadvantage racing in the heat against an electric car. Why not just let the demon race at it’s full potential. That’s lame as hell
Most of these comments are ridiculous. He never said the Demon170 would beat the Lucid. He’s saying that the car was setup to fail which is why it was running low 10s on half the passes at the track. Anyone who knows what they are doing runs these cars below half a tank, with the chiller on when its warm, and in Custom mode. Watching that video, the Lucid is faster, but the Demon170 should be running at least 9.30s/9.40s.
It doesn’t really matter. Sapphire would beat muscle car like that. Challenger isn’t even in production anymore and Stellantis is on the brink of bankruptcy anyways. Lol

I'm not into hot rods of any make so I'm not into super fast cars for the eightth or quarter mile. Top end msybe. But most anyone knows shaving weight off makes a car faster. Reducing the spinning weight makes the car faster. Colder air makes a car perform much better. Fuel also makes a large difference as well. I used to get high octane fuel from the air port for those i knew who liked to race. Fuel makes a huge difference.
One question i have is why he did this? What did he get out of doing this?? Did he sell out?? Something is sure smelling fishy for sure. Once someone does something like this then everything they do and have done comes into question.
Enough of the 170s have run the track to know what it runs time wise. So what was the time the other car ran?? Was it faster than the other 170s ran?? I didn't hear how fast either car was on that race. So what was the times?? That alone will say volumes about the race.

I watch the video, yea they for biased in favor for Lucid. However they mention that they weren't on a prepped surface they may have mentioned that it isn't running on e85. The 170 from 0 on the street isn't gonna hit single digit times. I would go as far to say that it would run peak stock 1320 times at best.

If you only going to race in perfect air perfect prep I’m sure more two seat demons was sold than one seats I’m willing to beat most of them don’t have carbon fiber wheel option maybe you have somthing with the fuel. First and foremost, I don’t like EVs. I’m an ICE guy forever.
With that said, the 170 got smoked by train lengths. I don’t think a full tank of gas, a seat and some carbon slicks would’ve made a difference. The chiller mode, E20 and everything else is prior to running the lucid because the E gauge was blue at the time of race.
Too many excuses tbh.

You're making claims based off of screenshots, which some were proved false, like the Demon not having carbon fiber wheels, which it did. You weren't there, so you're making claims based off of a screen shot. The screen shots that actually show the vehicle being raced, show it having E85 in the tank. The guy who was actually there left a message refuting these claims. Will you apologize after having clarification? The fact that people just instantly believe you based off of a screenshot, whether through their own bias or whatever reason, is sad. You have to be able to drive. Not once was there a good launch. Not once did you see the front wheels come off the ground which good drivers do in a 170

Saphire isn’t setup for drag . 170 will always lose to the saphire regardless of what other excuses are ou have . Couldn’t manage better than a 9.7 and ran 10s repeatedly . It also go out trapped by 10mph . That’s not even a race . Just accept the fast that the lucid saphire is a faster car .

The demon was never going to win anyway, Dodge’s magical 8.9 quarter mile is almost impossible to replicate in the real world, fastest i’ve seen a Demon run is like a 9.5, which is still really fast but you can’t expect to get that time without having a drag strip all to yourself and programming the launch control to perfection which takes countless runs.. to still be beaten by a Model S Plaid, which is SLOWER than the Lucid! Im sorry there just isn’t a chance on stock rubber, even with those special mickey Thompsons, it needs to be on superglue to launch properly and even then it’ll only help so much..
