    Kinda fun fact: Blair Witch was filmed in my home town, it was like a mile away from my elementary school and house. I’ve even walked around in the woods that they filmed at. One time I even said “HEY! I’ve seen that log!”

  • @rubixdude1067

    The guy in gray must of actually been pretty terrifying. Considering how that wasn't actually apart of the crew it was literally some random dude in the forest. That's just creepy. What would happen if they actually caught up to it?

    Though I knew this movie wasn't real found footage I still felt deeply for the characters, the mental anguish they go through, the fear, the hate, it all felt very real to me. That's what makes this film so terrifying.

    • @njdotson
      @njdotson 3 роки тому +7

      Yeah even if it's clear a film is fiction it can be realistic. Watching this reminded me of the "this house has people in it" because of the unconventional filming style, with that video being even more wacky. The security cameras filming everything misleads people because of how they're used for real-life purposes, unlike movie cameras filming fictional productions, identifiable with their smooth movement and high quality of video and audio. Knowing the media isn't real doesn't completely detach it from the real-life context. Also, the two films are made using a medium that makes the audience somehow involved in the context of the film, where this house has people in it is displayed as a video feed from the location, and the blair witch project is shown filming the events as they happen from their own camera's perspective. Movies usually act like the camera doesn't exist, even sometimes being removed in reflections.
      (Also, this comment might not make any sense)

    Honestly? Mike & Josh essentially making a snuff film of sorts with Heather as the movie star is far more horrifying than ghosts and witches.

    One of my favorite things I learned watching panels with the actors was Mike talking about getting to the house. That day when they received their acting direction, his was something along the lines of "when you get there lead Heather up, then go back down leaving her behind". Obviously he was confused because they had only been in the woods this whole time and apparently this was the only time any of the actors used the walkies they had specifically to talk to the directors for clarification...and the directors brushed him off told him he'd know it when he'd see it. This lead to what Mike has said was his most in the moment line, him looking at the house and going "Oh shit. *It's a house*." because in that moment he realized what his direction met. This is why some people (for example MatPat with his theory on the movie) believe Mike was weirdly familiar with the layout of the house despite him never being there before.

  • @cthulhluftagn3812

Freaked the neighbor out so bad he threw up. A week later my parents decided to mess w him by making the little stick people and tying them outside his house and acting like they had no idea.

    This is a great video, I had no idea the actors improv'd so much of the script. And I'm also glad we never saw the man in the suit. I'm curious about what you'd have to say about Cloverfield (if you haven't talked about it). I've seen the Blair Witch Project but Cloverfield is my favorite found footage film. But it does a lot of the same things that Blair Witch did, eg leave you with very few answers. And it had its own viral marketing campaign that was incredible and added new layers to its story!

    The story behind the Blair witch is a folk tale from Leicester, England, in which there was a woman called black Annis and she would come and take kids at night if they lived close to her cave (which is a 15 minute walk from my house) and would like eat them and until recently it was a ritual site, but they blocked off the cave entrance so now it's not, look up "Black Annis Cave" on Google there's a whole wiki page about her and everything

    Commenting mainly to help the video circulate better (algorithm), but I was one of those people who found it to be boring. Not bad, just not scary. It's like the Exorcist: a good movie with an interesting plot, just a little dull. Of course, that's probably because I didn't watch it until like a decade later lmao EDIT: Also I really love the "it's the boys screwing with the girl" theory. There's just something even more realistic feeling about it? I dunno.
    It's so revolutionary, though. Like I can't imagine what horror would've been like without Blair Witch existing. I mean, we'd probably have a lot less shitty found footage films, but we'd also be missing out on the delightful deceit that BW brought to the original viewers.

    I was a naive teen on the internet when this came out, and...I think modern retellings of the marketing overstate it. The hype wasn't "this is a scary documentary." The hype was "have you heard about this horror movie that pretends to be real? They even made a website about how their lore is real. The actors aren't even doing interviews!" There was some vagueness around if there might be a real urban legend the witch was based on, but everyone knew the film itself was fiction.
    There were reports around the time that people had been taken in, but it seemed to be coming from the Marylin-Manson-is-causing-mass-killings crowd. It had that tone. The Blair Witch crew fooling people into thinking these kids died in the woods, was itself a boogeyman.
    Someone was probably fooled--or more likely just unsure what to believe--but in reality that person was probably not in the theater with you.

    As a horror film enthusiast and someone who went into this film genuinely wanted to enjoy this flick, this is perhaps the single most overrated horror film of all time. It's an opinion, but the fact that it is a film thst boils down to literally nothing happening throughout the film aside from some college kids being terrified and screaming at the camera out in the woods, I think it has credence given its impact. Especially considering that it inspired an entire GENRE filled with lackluster copycat films.
