Honestly, no matter how cliche'd or memed or overexposed they get, distorted faces are always going to freak me out or at the very least make me uncomfortable. I mean, I think the actual story and character of Jeff the Killer are complete and utter garbage, but the actual picture STILL gives me shivers every time I see it. I can't even make eye contact with it. So sure, they're cliche, but distorted faces absolutely do still scare me and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. The one that gets to me the worst is the image of the giant shadow with only eyes standing in the corner of a bedroom. That thing still haunts me from time to time, on late nights when I'm by myself in my dorm.

Personally I think the Mandela Catalogue should've leaned in more with the Christian cartoons. Not that the PSA format should've been completely abandoned, it just seemed very interesting to have this spin on the analog horror genre. I love the idea of Alternates or just the whole of what is happening in Mandela County to finally be the return of Christ. That these victims are not abandoned by a god who loved them, but being embraced by a god who sees them as just their toys. I think it would be a neat take, especially since most analog horror focuses more on godlessness.

Yeah what I really like about the Mandela Category is that I am on the autism spectrum but when I was a kid I struggled with it a lot. The part with the Christian Cartoon really took me back to like a dark mental place as a kid when all words were just kind of a blur and everything was scary or incomprehensible.

The Mandela Catalogue's main problem is that the series on the whole relies on very shallow, almost lazy creepypasta like 'jumpscare' to terrify people and i doubt that leaning more on Christian Cartoon would've solved anything as long as this fundamental problem was not solved although it would make a unique aesthetic

I honestly like the spooky faces, the uncanny valley part in your brain signals off. Even if the faces don't do it for you, the idea of a doppelganger is horrifying, sometimes the being copying you can't get it exactly right.

    • @MR-cx1mg
      @MR-cx1mg 2 роки тому +9

The idea of a doppelganger with a detail or two being 'off' enough to feel uncanny to your brain is creepy to even imagine... I think that's part of what makes the trope of your reflection smiling back at you on its own so unnerving. It looks just like you, but you're not smiling... *shudder*

For the part at 15:18, where you talk about Squimpus McGrimpus and the Fnaf VHS tapes, Squimpus wasn't the first to start the Fnaf VHS genre.
That was Junior0437, and they started it way back in 2017. But most people tend to falsely believe that Squimpus was the one who started the VHS trend.

You should make a video on ALEXKANSAS' Analog Horror series. Although it's not EXACTLY analog horror, it uses creepy imagery very rarely and mainly focuses on it's story rather than horror. I've watched the entire series and it is absolutely amazing. To sum up what it is about in a short manner; Imagine a world where supernatural phenomena is a natural and normal thing. He really knows how to make an analog horror series without using the overused qualities like creepy faces or long dark hallways etc. I really suggest that anyone who sees this to watch it, I promise you WILL enjoy it.

Thing is, not every 'analog' recorded video looks like a distorted and static inducing TV. Take Into account that there's other aspects that can count as 'analog', such as:
      1. Film Grain
      2. White Noise
      3 Dirty Lense
      4. Blurred Sections
There's many other types of old-like editing options that can be used instead of the overly used VHS overlay that everyone uses repeatedly in every video. There are ways to make something look old without making it look like it came straight out of a VHS/Old TV. Maybe make it look like it came out of a film reel, or make it look like an old cartoon. There are more options. The only way I can see this not being true is if the definition of analog is strictly to stuff like: Broadcasts, radio, VHS settings, and other items in that certain time period where it all collects together like that.
I do kind of agree with da boy here.

Something interesting I noticed that this series manages to do well is have constant suspense and dread.
One trope I see horror doing too much is what I like to call the three-step scare. The first two steps, you show something normal and unsuspecting until the third one has something spooky happen. This series manages to play on that trop where the first two steps are either a little bit scary to becoming something horrifying, or something suspenseful to the scare. Two examples would be thehe three categories of alternates (something unnerving, something evidently disturbing, something that can't even be named), and the build up to the distorted Gabriel (two short sentences to the distortion).
While I for some reason still find the distorted Gabriel to be the scariest image of the series for me (and I'm not even Christian enough to know who he is, lmao), the scariest scene was the cameras. You know something terrifying is going to happen, and there is barely any reassurance or breathing point until you see the open door. While the image is just that, the context is what makes it a lot more unnerving to see. Exhibition is also all just suspense; you have no idea what is going to be seen or if anything will be seen. The slight turn of the light on the door knob made me think for a moment an alternate was moving.
While I still think Local 58 is the best Analog Horror series on UA-cam, Mandela Catalogue is easily the scariest for me.

As someone who has been studying angels and theology for a little bit this series has been an interesting trip. Something to note for example is the difference between Samael and Satan (though some sources denote them as the same entity). Samael is an archangel at the service of god who is tasked to tempt and punish humans, he is also known as the serpent who tempted eve in Genesis. Now rather than this being something that is more powerful that god, I feel it's actually god himself carrying this punishment through his servants.
Another thing I wanted to mention is that it is common knowledge that angels are made of fire, and the higher ranking the angel the more they burn (with Seraphim being the highest in ranks besides God himself) so when I saw that flash of light in that church picture I immediately thought it could be an angel. Angels are abstract beings so that explains why there wasn't any noticeable shape.
So yeah, I'm not Christian or catholic but I have always found this fascinating and I hope to see more Angelic lore in the future of this series. I also feel this is why we haven't seen any "Satanic" imagery, because the prince of hell isn't involved.

The trouble with the internet making independent art so much more accessible and easier to spread, is that now everyone is trying to make their own hot new webseries, but being original and bringing something new and interesting to the table is HARD. It requires more effort and practice than a lot of people are willing to put in. Even the people who are willing to change with the trends and keep their art feeling fresh are going to wind up behind the curve at some point because the internet just changes so damn fast in this era. Things that start out as new and interesting become stale and overplayed in mere weeks, something that used to take years. I'm not saying that not everyone should produce art, because I believe anyone who wants to make art should feel welcome to try and to create what makes them happy. I'm more so just trying to say that people should not go into art expecting to hit it big, because that just doesn't happen to everyone. It simply can't happen to everyone. I think people should make what they want to make, rather than trying to just cash in on the latest new trend and running it into the ground within days. And I'm glad to see that at least this series is willing to grow and change because the creator wants it to, rather than to just stick with the same safe formula that got it noticed in the first place. It feels authentic. And the best kind of art is always the stuff that was made authentically, with a genuine desire to make something good that won't just generate clicks but will stick with the audience.

Analog Horror is really interesting to me mostly because of how it is presented. While certain series kind of don't really consider the logistics of the origins of their lost footage (in the sense that at times there isn't an explanation as to how and why there is a video of a certain thing happening, and sometimes there are certain aspects that contract the era in time that is being depicted), what keeps me coming back is still how they present what they want to say. The amount of creativity that creators pour into their series is truly inspiring in my opinion.

I feel like the distortion of faces can be really effective when giving people a sense of dread or eeriness. Taking something you know and see every day and warping it to a point where it’s just familiar enough is what makes a lot of people unsettled. Even though I don’t find Slender Man scary, it’s hard to say that there isn’t something uncanny when your brain doesn’t see something that should look one way but isn’t. That being said, it can be over done to a point where it’s just kinda goofy looking, but it’s kind of a staple in analog horror that just needs to be done slightly differently to give people that dreadful feeling again. Maybe a different set up or pay off could breathe some new life into it.

I really don‘t see how analog horror is oversaturated. From it‘s birth with local 58 it has so much potential still and is incredibly new. Every analog horror series so far is very good and all has something of it’s own. All I see is that it might be starting to gain it‘s own tropes however this is no sign of it being oversaturated. Also it has nothing to do with unfiction or args and I don‘t see how diminish could be a good inspiration for analog horror. It is much closer to petscop.

Distored faces in my experience are always used effectively cause the channels I watched always use them with a purpose, Martin Walls uses distorted faces to show gruesomeness. Mandela Catalog uses distorted faces well, it plays into the story of demons trying to look human but are imperfect. Or they are mocking us, this is the most interesting way that demons are portrayed, this series deserves this praise.

I think that analog horror is probably going to top off with Mandela catalogue, unless some people have something cool and innovative in the works, the whole genre is entering into the “deconstruction/meme/satire” phase that all cultural things go through and which occur when a medium is dying off.

My favorite analog horror series by far has to be gemini home entertainment. The plot is well developed, each video is diverse enough so it doesn't fall into the same "hehe spooky face scary" trope, the creator made a fucking *VIDEOGAME* to accompany the series and give us a better understanding of the lore, and the fact that the tapes aren't "corrupted" by a secret entity but are completely intentional gives it a little bit of uniqueness that stands out from the others. Instead of being a broadcast being corrupted by a mysterious entity, they are tapes that were *DESIGNED* to be the way they were.

I would love 3 rechrospectives on the 3 seasons of the ARG. Think about it, I recommend watching it if you haven't yet.

the reason it's so effective for me is because it takes two of my worst fears and goes crazy with it. That being that these are strange interdimensional beings that can show up basically anywhere and just psychological torture you until you want to die, and intruding into your home. I'm not really scared of ghost or demons or whatever what I am scared of are people because god knows what they'll do to you. Nothing will freak me out more than that fear of one day turning on the lights and just seeing someone there not knowing what they'll do to me. Plus the sounds and other stuff of analog horror is just nah man! No idea why but my brain just gets tingles from the sounds of all of that.
Plus knock on the amogus sus faces all you want something about them creep me out. It's the uncanny valley feel really. Plus, paired with the atmosphere and music just makes it worse. Like, It's a face and you know it's a face but it's just so distorted and weird that it isn't a face? I don't know it's weird. This is the only series in a while that has made me not go to sleep because I fear that when I go to sleep some thing or someone will just be watching me. Also is it just me or is the whole "oversaturation of analog horror" thing kinda odd. I'm the exact opposite where horror in general is over saturated and analog horror is still fairly new? I haven't gotten a good scare from horror movies in a while because after a while they're all just the same. It feels like every month we get a new one and i'm just at the point where I can't tell you the difference between them. Let's be honest here, nothing innovative has happened to the horror movie genre for a long time. The last movie I would say genuinely terrified me was the blair witch (1999)

  • @jacksstruggle6888
    @jacksstruggle6888 2 роки тому +20

Speaking about that angel that the series showing, it reminds me of this verse in Galations chapter 1: "7Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! "
So it seems that whoever made this knew about that verse. That would be pretty scary wouldn't it? A devine being trying to force you to do something, even they are evil, but they use the guise of a good thing.
And yes I am Jewsih. Praise Jesus our Lord. Thank you for reading. Shalom and amen.

Big fan of the genera, tropes and all. It's the same with any horror genera really; after they get oversaturated with a particular "trend" or whatever, people will try and milk that. But then people are introduced to the genera from that and start doing their own thing- sometimes surpassing the thing that inspired them.
Analog horror maybe a little trope-filled right now, but just you wait, I'm sure we'll be having some fresh faces making fresh content...
Then those videos become tropes in of themselves and the cycle continues.
