I fucking love how dedicated Puppet Combo is to the loudest fucking jumpscare sounds ever. Night of the Nun is one of the intentionally loudest games I've ever played.

Love Puppet Combo games!! It’s crazy how VHS esque things can be a source of childhood nostalgia but somehow also a very unsettling and creepy medium for scary games and videos. Have to watch this after I get done chowing down on this thanksgiving dinner.

One specific Creator that I like that makes games similar to puppet combo is Chilla's Art. They focus more on Japan horror, and myths. They also focus more on story and puzzle but less on jumpscare even tho they do use them. One of my favorite games they have made was The Conveneice Store.
-If any body wants to see these games, I suggest watching Gab Smolders playthroughs since she also talks about the culture and translates some japanese that is in the game.

This retro talk reminded me of one of my favorite most interesting developer. While I dont know if they are exactly "retro horror" the games by KittyHorrorShow are some of my favorite horror games on the internet. They have stuck with me the most and leave me thinking about them for days after completing them.

It's worth noting that Puppet Combo doesn't only draw inspiration from American slasher films of the 80s but also largely from the Italian horror of the 70s and 80s which has an extremely unique vibe of it's own.
Nun Massacre is Fulci's Demonia mixed with Argento's Suspiria, while The Night Ripper is Fulci's The New York Ripper.

I think retro horror in general was mainly born from a certain method of deriving fear from viewers and players, that being to twist childhood nostalgia into something familiar, but unsettling. A perfect example of this outside of games and movies is "dont hug me im scared", which imitates older children's shows and up until the last episode or two only has moments of unease or something being off for the majority of the episodes. That distortion of what we remember as something fun and innocent makes retro horror more personal because you subconsciously associate the aesthetic and feel of the game with good memories, which makes when it descends into creepy and disturbing stuff all the more impactful. It's sort of like the uncanny valley effect, but for media instead of people or animals.

PLayed Murder House 1 year ago-ish on the PS5 (ps4 native in this case), remember having this unsettling vibe the whole game. Then I just decided to re-download it last night and give it a go while using noise cancelling headphones. During the first part of the game ("Mall incident" / 1985) I could hear my own breathing clearly unsettled. And this was a re-run of a PSx like game. This is what atmosphere looks like. Last time I had this was with P.T

*edit: grammar (p.s. - I would love to hear more of your thoughts on horror media from the grindhouse era. There were a lot of silly, charming, and occasionally grotesque films made by low budget studios back then, each with their own neat little history. (Though maybe neat's not the right word . . . ))

The original Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are two very slow, tense horror films. Halloween has next to no blood in it, but it’s effective because of the way The Shape blends into the darkness, appearing suddenly to attack. TCM is actually not very violent (with only one really graphic death) but it is viewed as such a disturbing movie for how the sound design and snuff-film-esque presentation paints a mental picture of violence. TCM is a perfect example of fear of the unknown, but not for the reasons you expect. I’d say that Puppet Combo’s games are less like those and more like Halloween II, or, what Halloween inspired, Friday the 13th. Films that do have a lot of tension, but rely more on the shock and surprise. I do love Halloween, and I do like Puppet Combo, but I think it’s less of a direct connection and more like a grandfather relationship

i like the location you chose for filming, it feels like an improvised setup with the painted brick walls and the carpet looking like poured concrete in a basement or parking garage that happened to have an outlet, which makes for a type of liminal space that feels like a story happened here, but you cant make any sense of why it did or what it was. the door kinda betrays that though, but good vid nonetheless

I know I'm a year late to this video but, holy shit, re-watching your video essays REALLY makes me wish you'd do a retrospective series on Silent Hill! I know there are a few channels out there that have done their own versions-- if not outright dedicate their entire channel to the series and the lore (TheGamingMuse, TheBritishGamingShow kinda seems to be doing a retrospective although I think so far they've only covered 1 - 3, Nitro Rad has his videos, Jordan Underneath seemed to have set out to do one as well until he completely pivoted the direction of the channel, and while lesser known, Dena Natali and her show The Game Den put out one of the earliest Silent Hill retrospectives for Blistered Thumbs back when Channel Awesome was known as ThatGuyWithTheGlasses and had their two subsidiaries, Blistered Thumbs for game focused channels and one focused on anime although I can't remember what it went by), but I would love to get your opinion on the franchise because I just really enjoy getting others perspectives on one of my favorite videogame series, especially finding out what differences others might have picked up on or different interpretations of theories and subtext of the games! (Except for maybe the way more outlandish "interpretations" like "All of the games featuring (cis) male protagonists are DEFINITELY about circumcision - no, I'm not "just projecting my weird agenda onto them"!", "The Silent Hill games were inspired by the city of Centralia! I'm not just lazily quoting that because I have the videogames conflated with the movies because I've only seen the movies and had a surface interaction with the games!" or "James Sunderland is totally a misogynist that murdered his wife, murders Maria, and would totally murder Laura too because I got the Bad Ending of the game and I can't comprehend that there are other endings that are possible to see because that just complicates my simplistic view of the world of Silent Hill 2!")

My brother and I bought Nun Massacre on the PS store because we thought it would be funny and it looked like a neat little game and we lasted like 15 minutes before getting too scared and tapping out LMAO. Personally I think Fnaf 4 is at least pretty good about its scare factor. It's just jumpscares and loud sounds yes, But I believe its the best use of the "Basic jumpscare" formula. Useing audio forces it to be quiet and focues and even then the chance you're wrong builds a basic sense of tention and unease very well. Its formulaic and jumpscare heavy, but it DOES at the end of the day at least make most people tense.

In a world where 90% of modern media horror games are absolute garbage, Puppet Combo and PS1 styled horror games are by far my favourite ones because they don’t hold back. From atmosphere, to startling jumpscares, to the intense difficulty balancing… it really reminds me of a time when Horror games used to be good and not just Jumpscare Simulator 3000

  • @sushisuke
    @sushisuke Рік тому

Really old video, but I wanted to defend Power Drill Massacre's "cheap jumpscares" because, to me, they're really not cheap at all.
The game is incredibly quiet so the fear is set in you knowing the killer is lurking literally *anywhere* - there are so few (if none at all) scripted events that it is pure chance and use of caution on whether or not you'll be spotted. Once you are spotted, you can hear his footsteps slamming towards you, those footsteps leading into the climactic and aggressive horror sting that sounds like rotten guitar feedback. It's an incredibly unique vibe, and it's not cheap so much as it is shocking.
Later Puppet Combo games absolutely can feel cheap with the jumpscares, or just extremely cheap in general. This shouldn't be defended, but definitely don't dismiss the clear intention behind the scares, and the build-up or context surrounding them.

I watched RE7 and that's what got me into the Series but never watched the Fixed Camera games. And now that I'm playing em. I want them back. Now RE9 Might be the ending of Ethan's and they can chill with First Person but honestly I just wanna see Fixed Camera again. Honestly the way they can do it is by remaking old games with the Fixed Camera. Fuck. I just wanna see it again.
