    I also attribute RPGMaker's collection of main horror games' popularity to VGPerson, who translated Ib, Mad Father, Misao, The Crooked Man, Mermaid Swamp, Hello? Hello...?, and some others. Them being made available (and by being made available, curated by) by this translator was probably something that made it more accessible to find good games in the genre.

    On Ib being an example of traumatic themes being particularly clear staples of RPG Maker horror games but not being one of the more explicit examples of it, it starts with a kid getting separated from her parents in a public place and then kind of goes on to be about being forced to navigate (or at least get yourself out of) a stressful/difficult situation by yourself for the first time and, sure, technically having learned and grown from it, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be haunted by how jarring and scary an experience it was, with attention called to it by things like Ib’s innocence at the start being reflected in her inability to read certain words and the differences between her and Garry’s perspectives - and speaking of Garry, even in a situation without parents to protect her, Ib is still able to find a nice adult to help her, but considering he’s, like, a skittish college student also trapped in the museum, even if he’s perfectly well-meaning and stronger and wiser than her, he’s on surprisingly similar ground to her and still doesn’t represent the same authority and safety that a parent figure would; and meanwhile, she also finds herself running into the fact that while there are helpful Garrys out there, the nice-looking people you might run into when you’re by yourself and need help may not exactly be interested in helping you with your problems/getting back home (Mary).

    I notice Omori in the thumbnail, and it makes me excited to see more people learning about it. If anyone reading this is interested in RPG horror games with dark themes and a rich story, Omori is a masterpiece.

    • @angelschair9388
      @angelschair9388 2 роки тому +88

      @@pancakes8816 I personally like it because of the story. The characters are the most down-to-Earth and human characters I've seen, and the foreshadowing in this game is masterful. I also love how the story feels so real (mostly), and it isn't afraid to get really real really fast.
      I do understand why some people DON'T like it though. I've heard the common complaint being the pacing, which I totally understand, as the format of the game does cause the pacing to feel slow, both in story and gameplay. However in regards to the story, I think that's the point. I don't want to go into details because of spoilers but I do get that some people want to be in the fun much more than Omori gives you, since the game has a lot of cutscenes and segments with little gameplay.

    • @pancakes8816
      @pancakes8816 2 роки тому +17

      @@angelschair9388 i get that, and im cool with slow paced games. Some of my favorite games are considered VNs, I just find omori boring cause everything it does has been done before. It showcases anxiety, depression and other mental ailments, like daring today aren't we?

    • @angelschair9388
      @angelschair9388 2 роки тому +77

      @@pancakes8816 Yeah it doesn't exactly tread new grounds in terms of main themes, although I believe the specifics (if you know some of the major spoilers) makes it stand out among similarly-themed games. It's also good to remember that while something may have been done many times before, for some players it would be their first experience with a game about mental illnesses, although that shouldn't be an excuse for people to keep making games like that over and over, as it could saturate the theming.

    Weirdly, my own introduction to this genre was actually a crossover fangame of Ao Oni called Hetaoni, which never ended up finishing bc the original creator lost all the files during an earthquake in Japan. It’s insane because it’s a community within a community within a community, yet somehow there was a huge cult following, to the point where there were full on translation projects, fanmade cosplay movies, animations, music videos,, the list goes on. It’s genuinely incredible the kind of stuff people got up to during this time period, and I wish I was just a bit older at the time so I could’ve participated more actively.

    Saw Omori in the thumbnail and I knew this was gonna be a good video. Idk how much other people may want to see a series of retrospectives on these games, but I know that I'd be down for at least an Omori video, it's a great game that deserves all of the love that it gets and more, and I'd love to see you break it down!

    It’s so great to see a video on RPGMaker horror games! I would watch a retrospective series for sure.
    I have always been sensitive to audio jumpscares (THANK YOU so much for not including them in the video, or without warning) I might have never played these games on my own. But when I saw let’s plays when I was younger, I could sort of laugh it off or turn the volume down. I remember watching Ib and thinking the game, art and music were so good I didn’t want to just watch it anymore, so I downloaded and played it. It was really nice to be a part of the small fandom that came from it, and other similar games.

    I'm a recent subscriber of your channel. Discovered you by accident looking for FNAF lore after forgetting about the game for years. I love your analysis and the spot-on atmosphere you create with your music. Every video so far has been fascinating whether I'm familiar with the subject or not. Great work.

    Theres also endroll, and farethere city. They are extremely underground horror games that disscuss themes of the afterlife, and also challenge players too using ingame mechanics making searching for secrets and good endings require a large portion of player skill.

    not even a minute in and im so glad i Found a video of someone talking about these gamesss 😃 something i love about rpgmaker horror games is how they use the pixel art to their advantage and add as MUCH detail as the creators can. ❤ they’re also lowkey a part of my childhood lol games like witches house or ib were like my first exposure to horror as a genre and im so happy it was 🥹

    Love this video! RPGmaker games are so important to me and almost all of these games were super important to me during my childhood.
    It's also especially nice to see Ib (and others from around that time) mentioned because seeing playthroughs of Ib was what caused me to get super into RPGmaker games in the first place and it seems like not as many people talk about that game as they do other games.

    GOD, YES, _PLEASE_ MAKE AN RPG HORROR RETROSPECTIVE SERIES!
    I practically grew up watching those let's plays, and I swear, there was something special about those games that no horror trend since was ever quite able to capture. Now of course I'd love to see you cover Ib and Witch's houses first, two of my favorite horror games of all time, which I'm absolutely sure is a _completely_ unique opinion amongst RPG Maker horror enthusiasts, but it'd also be really cool to see some more overlooked ones covered, like Mermaid Swamp and the rest of the Strange Man anthology (both made by the creator of The Crooked Man), or maybe even a video about Ann, a far more recent RPG Maker horror game that I'm fairly certain only came out this year. Can't wait to see this series!

    Cool video. The recent spike in 3D pixelated and PS1-style horror games have really squashed the RPG maker horror game in mainstream, so it's good to see a video remembering how we got here.

    Strangely, my introduction to rpg horror was the Hetalia fangame community, where most games are made on rpg maker and many of which are horror games. I think one of the most popular Hetalia fans games was Heta Oni, Ao Oni but with the Hetalia characters. Since then, I've really enjoyed the rpg horror genre and other games that have taken inpsiration from games in the genre!

    As someone who discovered you via the full Five Nights at Freddie's series in a single long video (I should point out I'm not even a FNAF fan but your delivery of the information was compelling enough that it kept me watching for the whole long video then going looking for your FNAF book videos too!) I'm all in support for you turning this too into a longer series, especially if it too ends with a long video I can put on while I'm working. I also think your delivery method for information lends much better to 1 thing at a time (be it a book, a game, or anything else) rather than exploring a whole sub-genera in a short video which I have to agree did result in this video seeming a bit "all over the place" :-) Keep up the awesome work and can't wait to see more in-depth work from you!

    RPG Maker horror games are some of my favorite games. I still remember the delightfully unsettling stories of Corpse Party and Misao, and how tense I was while playing The Crooked Man, Mad Father, and The Witch's House. I'm so glad to see you making a video about them and how effective they were at exploring darker themes. Thank you for another great video! I'd also love to see individual retrospective episodes about RPG Maker horror games.
