      The Grenadier Guards are one of the five regiments of foot guards that stand guard at the Queen's palaces, but they are also an active combat regiment. Every year they have a remembrance day where past members of the regiment get together and remember those they've lost. This is either the start or end of that - they assemble at their barracks and march down to the Guards Memorial for the ceremony, and being soldiers, they really march.

      nein nein I’m no expert but I know a thing or two about the Cadet Programs in the UK and Canada, as I belong to a similar program in the USA, as an adult. The adults are not Cadets but rather escorts/supervisors/facilitators/instructors. In the organization I belong to, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), it’s the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary and we have a Cadet Program that participates in the International Air Cadet Exchange, where similar programs from several countries have their Cadets visit other Cadets from other countries. I’ve interacted with some adult escorts from the UK and Canada, as I was a CAP Cadet before I enlisted in the U.S. Army for ten years. Upon my end of service with the Army I rejoined the CAP as an adult. In CAP we are called Senior Members and some hold command/staff positions, some are pilots or air crew, as we have aircraft funded by the U.S. Air Force, and fly mostly search and rescue missions as well as others for them, as non paid volunteers. I’ve been a Squadron and Group Commander, hold the rank of Major and I’m both ground and air search and rescue qualified. My current assignment is as Deputy Commander for Senior Members in a Composite Squadron that consists of 38 adults (mostly Officers, some non-rank and two Non-commissioned Officers) and 56 Cadets. We provide support for the Cadets and are their escorts, facilitators/instructors, etc., and do the command and operational functions as needed. So I’m thinking these adults with the Cadets marching do the same as the CAP adults. And yes many of us are older, sometimes overweight, wear beards (although in CAP, if we are then we wear a different authorized USAF uniform), but we are treated with respect as officers as we wear rank insignia. Here’s a link where you can check out CAP if you like; gocivilairpatrol.com.

      @@neinnein9306 They are CFAV, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers. They are civilians who give up their spare time to Instruct the cadets on week nights and weekends. They don't bar anyone from service for medical or fitness reasons. They are super dedicated, working with little to no remuneration and are woefully understaffed.
      Every interaction I have had with regular soldiers at the national training center, the regional cadet training teams and the regular safety adviser attached to each battalion/county is that of awe and respect for doing what they do with little to no thanks.
      But every time they get the chance to participate in a parade like this, someone like you has to come along and belittle these great people who don't get more than a few drill lessons unless they chose to specialise. It is always "their uniform doesn't fit" or "they look shoddy". Shameful

      There is frivolous parade tradition in Europe, I think. I don't want to hurt anyone, skill of marching isn't important skill for modern soldier, but when I was a conscriptor in Russian armed forces, after 3 month of service we had so much better skills in it. Also I served in parade battalion during 5 month and we marched better than any professional soldiers in Europe. There are no any direct lines in their formation, thir legs aren't string, there is big intervals among them. It isn't formation of brother-in-arms, it isn't marching, it is just a walk. My marching-trainer give us a 10 extra-duties, I think, if we marched as that men (who are good men, I think, even they haven't marching skills).

      They have a bad marching skill. Because they so young. I have a bad marching skill. I just can marching in formation, because i train just marching in formation with rifle for a Victory day parade at Red square. But that man, i think, haven't any marching skills. Some of them cannot keep formation lines. I don't know how good they are as soldiers, may be they are good soldiers, but as parade participants they aren't exist, because they can't marching. @@ADogNamedStay yes I know. We Lear to step in one time with direct lines at one day with a right "motivation" by the instructor. But it isn't marching. I think, when you keep formation, lines, columns, and step in one time, you just walking like a soldier. Marching mean, that you are straight as a string, your foots straight to and raise up for 45°, or more and this angle is equal for each lines. Marching means that every men in formation doin the same as other - every rifle have similar position on your body, shoulders nake a direct lines without angles, footsteps make really military noise of sinchronic beat, as a war trumpet make. It is marching, I think, and you cannot do it one day to week, or just by train. If you want to get marching skill, you must to reform your mind, to learn become part of the formation, unindividual. It is real purpose of marching in army now - learning of collective mind. If you are individual 6 days at week and only 1 gay at week you train marching, you can't get really skill of it. I think it is a real reason of difference between Russian and European parade tradition. European soldiers are so individual.

      My grandparent lived almost on the doorstep of RAF Woodbridge, so not a million miles from you. So got used to seeing the A-10s flying overhead ...
      At first, being about 9, in 1983 -- yes, I am old -- I used to think of how the hell could that damn thing fly ...
      ... now I wish our RAF, instead of the F35, instead invested in the once experimental twin cockpit (all -weather/night attack) version of the A-10, especially in the current Thunderbolt II upgrade, plus a few AC-130s (a version with twin, 20mm GAUs, plus the Bofors and the 105 ...), and definitely an upgraded version of the F111, since we no longer have medium to long range strategic bombers anymore, all for, quite possibly, the same amount of cash, whilst keeping the Harrier (hey, we invented the bloody thing ... just upgrade it to AV10a ...) ...
      But, despite all that, thank you for being at the sharp end, when, especially during the '80s, my classmates and I kept thinking of when, not if ... and, having learnt of Able Archer '83, and how Andropov reacted, if the merde did hit the air-conditioning (especially as he deployed all SS-20s in the Soviet Block states, into the field -- along with nuclear CnC -- plus raising his readiness to, iirc, the Soviet equivalent of DEFCON II ...), I can well imagine you, being on QRA, being loaded with WE 177s, and hoping for the best ...
      So I wish you a pleasent return visit to our shores, abet, sadly, for the last time ... If I didn't live so far away, first pint would be on me ...
      Finally, thank you for your generous words. The Anglo-American relationship, especially from Eisenhower onwards, as always been unique, and all the better for it. Although I have seen many a pissing contest in UA-cam comments, as my maternal cousin (Royal Marine, deceased), may well have said, a Marine is a Marine is a Marine, no matter which side of Yon Pond they hail from; I would say the same about our Air Force, and yours ...

      @Squishy Potato
      Remembrance day
      veterans day
      ANZAC day
      they all have an "after party" of sorts which the veterans conduct themselves where you drink all night and get up to shenanigans it helps make a very painful day for most a bit more tolerable you're also drinking for those not around to drink themselves
      here in AUS one ANZAC day was was positioned at the start of a 4 day weekend i can't remember any of that 5 days just waking up in a mansion on the last morning with my section commander standing over me naked going "you me two birds upstairs ready lets go"
      i said something along the lines of "i'm not fucking infront of you" and he went into the next room and i just hear "fuck yeah!"
