How Dune Leveled Up What A Blockbuster Should Feel Like

- Theres no question, when it comes to Dune and Dune Part 2, something just feels different. The cinematic experience you feel, especially in 70mm IMAX, is unlike anything else in today's cinema landscape. Denis Villeneuve achieved something special with Dune. A novel once thought to be unadaptable, has become the biggest movie in Hollywood. But what exactly makes Dune and Dune Part 2 stand out above the rest of the sci-fi offerings in Hollywood?

One thing I like about this movie is that fact that you can clearly see what's happening, even during battle scenes.
No quick cuts, no overused shaky handheld camera, no forced confusion to make it look like everything is fast paced.
You can see who is who, what is happening, why it's happening, sense the scale of it and it still fits with the rest of the narrative.
I can'T Understand how this Overhyped Movie is so beloved. Visually it was ok. But It is a Dull Movie. Please stop shilling and hyping.

Dune will be like LOTR in that 20 years later, it still won’t feel old. It’s well done, but hardly the 1st time something has been well done. It’s just been a long time.
I hope note LOTR feels very outdated
@@nazapadu02 it doesn't though.

@@nazapadu02 LOTR is less dated than most blockbusters releasing in the last few years.
This film had so many incredible, jaw dropping moments for me, but “Hey Muad’Dib! Don’t embarrass us. Call a big one!” was honestly among my favourites.
Part 2 really nailed the moments it needed to, like Feyd's intro, Paul summoning the worm, the water of life, "Duke of Arrakis!!", "SILENCE", and the knife duel. All those scenes and more gave me goosebumps
Having everyone laugh at the quip and be jovial only to have everyone shift into horror when they see how big a worm he ended up calling really sold it.
I agree, I had a very similar moment with your mum. It was brilliant.
Hollywood needs auteurs like Villeneuve more than ever
Theres alot of them. Sadly, people don't show up to see them alot of the times.
It's the same with people complaining about Hollywood only making sequels or IP we all know.
1. Those things make money. So, of course they are doing them.
2. There's hundreds of movies and series made a year. SOO many original IP made each year. So many. People just don't talk about them or don't know they exist. Instead people complain rather than actually pay attention to what's actually happening.
And less Disney/ Marvel pandering and lecturing soulless garbage.
Yeah, it does😏
Why can't youtubers pronounce the name though
He’s the director, not the author.
Dune is one of the most renowned sci-fi novels of all time, so I'm glad that its movie adaptation has been regarded as positively as it has 😊
Too bad the director didn't actually adapt the novel, but instead took some parts of it and rebuilt it in the image of 2024.

It's not that difficult to build a road 😆
But it does show dedication to the project.

@@FabledGentleman Roads generally cost about a million dollars a mile.
That being said, since these only needed to last a year or two over the course of the film, it's likely that they didn't do the proper ground prep necessary to make a long lasting road, which greatly reduces cost and time. That's just a guess on my part, though.
@@Descriptor413 Of course, you don't build something that isn't needed, all they need is a way to bring crew and equipment to location, and that's it.
Denis Villeneuve, Matt Reeves, Christopher Nolan, Guillermo Del Toro, Greta Gerwig, Yorgos Lanthimos. These are just a few of the directors whose movies I will watch in theatres regardless of what they've made, purely because I know they can be trusted to not compromise on their vision and to make something unique.
A list of the best directors working today minus Greta. They’re keeping cinema alive!
I think greta's pretty great tbh. I like Barbie and I think Little Women and Ladybird are excellent
@@jamesbell1186 I know too many women who felt insulted by Barbie's portrayal of them to think it was doing anything. What's worst is it really took away from America's great monologue. Outside of that, women were portrayed as simple minded individuals overcome by a single more simple minded individual's bad idea, when they were already in power and held smart positions in their culture. Follow that by the shut down about involvement in fair governance. And not one good guy in the whole show. Even Alan was abandoning his pregnant wife. The bulk of the reviews on this one were 2-4 stars and what the women had to say in those was pretty hard hitting. I'm surprised it has such a loud fanbase.
Lol Greta Gerwig and Denis Villeneue in the same sentence?
@gurratell7326 Love how I mention 1 female director and that's the one people have an issue with lol

Oh, don't worry, if Villeneuve wants to make a Part 3 he will. Part 2 made good money, so he'll definitely get the OK from the studios for a third movie.
He's just taking his time. Messiah needs time to be done right. And it will be done right
There is no way in hell that Warner Bros won't let him do part 3, I'm pretty sure they even want him to very much seeing how good it has been doing.
Denis is proof that Auteur directors must be respected and honoured more than they actually are.
Don't worry, he'll take all the Oscars this year (why else would anyone do a Nolan film?).

@@deebuggeryou're so obnoxious. Nobody cares if you didn't like it.
@@deebugger Not liking the movie is your choice. But since the majority of them liked it I'm saying Auteurs like Denis need more praise. Denis himself now gets universal praise after dune while his other movies like sicario, blade runner 2049 and arrival were just as good.
@@shaanvinoth9277 on the contrary my friend - I think those three movies you mentioned are exactly the reason he's already praised worldwide. Indeed those 3 movies are (in my opinion) far better than Dune, and they're the reason I was excited to see how a Villenueve Dune would look like, only to find out that it's actually Villenueve's Nolan version of Dune (and I really can't stand Nolan movies anymore). My problem is that now al movies will look like that.
@@deebugger I do agree with you sir. You are right

That's possibly the worst take I've ever heard. Dune Part Two is my favorite film of the year and will no doubt remain so, and I don't think I'm even going to see Rebel Moon Part One let alone Part Two.
Dune has substance, depth, quality, and I've never heard any of those things attributed to Snyder.
Why have so many UA-camrs failed to learn how to pronounce Villenueves name. It was understandable 4 movies ago. His films weren't that big. But he has done 3 hundred million dollar scifi blockbusters in the last 6 years. He isn't an unknown indie director anymore.
That's not how you write his name though... it's Villeneuve, not nueves.

The vfx in these movies makes so many high budget movies look amateurish
When Paul is being tested and is atop the dune crest, awaiting the approaching worm, the vfx sun keep switching from one side of the sky to the other. If you watch that scene and pay close attention to the light and shadow on Paul, you can see the sun switch several times in that sequence. I myself find that to be a bit too amateurish. Anyways.

This was spot on. I loved this movie for one reason: it felt real
Visually felt real, physically felt real (the fighting and motions of people/machines/worms), and the story felt very real. It wasn’t “sci-fi”, it was “real-fi” and felt like it was taken directly from real world events but changing out the planet
I was astonished how for a sci fi movie it never looked like typical sci fi movie.
It looks grounded and habitable.
Ive only Watched Dune Part one ..and I Can Safely say Its One of The Longest Cliff Hangers I Truly Ever Seen !
Greatest theater experience I’ve personally had. Fantastic film based on an equally excellent book.
Sound is huge to me in movies and Dune is up there with the Lord of the Rings trilogy as a masterpiece of sound.
The soundtrack and sound design is incredibly immersive and perfectly captures Dune universe
Can't wait til dune 2 comes out on dvd so I can watch 1 and 2 back to back

Thank you for a wonderful video!
Glad you enjoyed it!

he's amazing
If the best picture oscar does not go to Dune again...
Having gone through the gamut of "It's really good, but..." to "It's a masterpiece", having allowed the dust to settle I've finally arrived at a concrete assessment of Dune. It's a wonderful, thoughtful experience and a future classic. I just wish there was a bit more meat on the bone, as it were. As the Emperor said, "More, more!"
I agree - and I hate to be that guy - but the book was still way better, and as good as these movies were, they still didn't come close to really doing the book justice. I know... I know...😂

Dune part 2 underdelivered for me. Can't yet formulate in what way that was, but I left the theatre slightly dissapointed while everyone else was raving on about how good it was. Now I'm watching several movie essays to get a better idea as to why it didn't work for me despite the great technical aspects of villeneuve's work.
Interesting. I though it was pretty amazing. Was there something you were looking for specifically? Or just that it didn't seem to give you a feeling the first film did?
I was a bit disappointed that there was yet another cliffhanger for another film twice now I've thought it wasn't going to be a sequel, but apparently so. Still good movies though imo, just need the last (?) one to know if it was truly good!
Natural light in movies are now a greatly underrated factor. I really hope it is embraced by more Auteurs like Denis.

Hey can you do a video of what killed the movie titles
What do you mean? You mean as in 2, 3? Like why the sequels dont habe numbers or what?

To me, part 2 felt a bit lackluster in the story, dialoge and sound departments when compared to the exceptional part 1 (still overall great though)
you can tell that Villeneuve really loves, and gets lost in, perfecting the pictures
in which he succeeds
I still left the cinema a bit disappointed
I've heard so many people say after streaming it... Is it still on IMAX ?when can we go!!!
Great video, thanks. By the way, it's pronounced veel-nerve. Veel-nerve.
It didn't level up it just met the requirements, everyone else has just been dropping the ball in hopes that the bar lowers and mid becomes the acceptable standard.
nah fr
Nah, the usual garbage nowadays is really REALLY garbage.
Denis is an astonishing director. Quickly became my favourite. He knows his stuff.
We're experiencing classics like we have with LOTR and Dark Knight trilogy. It's rare
Also Disney/ Marvel is too busy with pandering, lecturing and dumbing down their garbage with godawful attempts at humour
"Met the requirements" perfectly fits the movie. It looks like a regular Nolan movie (which, sadly, is the current standard for getting an oscar), has no "offending" stuff (like sex or a single mention of the word "Jihad"), and feels like modern-day retelling of the bible.
We root for the underdog, the bad guys aren't really a threat, and the girl is the real hero (which a complete 180 from the book, which Denis loves so much..).
We're left with a dull and soul-less adaptation. Bummer.
@@deebugger you were rooting for paul??.... interesting...
I wouldn't say these films leveled up, but instead are in the same league of other truly great epic movies from the past. Saying that it's levelling up blockbusters implies it made something that has never been done and that's not true. That bar has been raised already long ago. I get the hype, it's a great adaptation and all, brings very interesting themes to the table, but I think people are overrating it a bit.
Masterpiece, the Sci-Fi version of Lord of the Rings

i've only just thought how hard it must've been to "reset" the sand between takes. I can only imagine having to recreate exact footsteps and brushing away marks and having to recreate sand mounds/dunes... i've just gained even more respect for this crew
The scale of those little decisions is crazy
I love Villeneuves movies, and I loved the aesthetic of both films and of course I think that the filmaking is awesome, but in this case, both films felt really 'empty' for me...
Like an lbum with a really good looking cover, but no songs inside
I kinda felt the same with the first movie, since it looked and sounded amazing, but didn't actually have much of a story arc or anything at all. The second has definitely relieved some of that and made me less hesitant to call it pretty good, but the story still doesn't feel complete, so it is on that line of feeling like it has some substance to it.
The story has been building this entire time though, so the third movie coming will definitely be the deciding factor for me, as to whether what it has built so far has been worth it and fulfilling, or if it was all useless empty nonsense. I am sure book readers would disagree, but since I haven't read the book and don't plan to before seeing the third movie, I can't see the bigger picture to see if everything that is being built and set up right now actually has meaning or was a waste.
It is like there is a bunch of Chekov's guns lying around. In most stories if the Chekov's guns don't go off, it is a disappointment to the audience, so generally if a story sets something up then something comes of it. Right now, so many major Chekov's guns have been set up but nothing has come of them, so for the third movie we need to see what becomes of them or it will make what has come before truly a disappointment instead of masterful build up and foreshadowing. Though since this is really only part way through the original story, this is all probably to be expected.
Can't wait for the third movie.

Can't wait for Dune Messiah to come soon 🙌

2 excellent films!! Part two especially amped it up as a blockbuster, Denise and Chris Nolan are our best today!!
So glad these movies are getting the hype they deserve. The hype should have started with Bladerunner 2049 though, absolute masterpiece!
2:50 remember, there is still no way that they didn't fix a loooot of the lighting in post. Not that it matters that much, but it's good to know.

(every single scene is a punchline to a hilarious joke).
this was a quote from bill burr talking about goodfellas. and it honestly changed the way i look at some films including and especially dune 2 . all i can think of watching the film unravel in the theater is how every single scene is either a dramatic or an action punchline. there is no fat everything feels right and satisfying.

Idk about that
Dune 1 was decent, Dune 2 sucked for me.
I think Villeneuve got so caught up in trying to make this film "feel" real that he forgot about a compelling dramatic arc or character development.
Paul is dull, Chani is dull, Stilgar is a meme, all the Harkonnen are idiots (especially in the second movie) and the emperor is a nobody that nobody cares about. Jessica is the only one that's interesting even in the slightest.
It's cool that you make such an effort to shoot in the Desert for the perfect shot but if you make a film for humans about humans in the desert with the mindset of leaving the humans out of it as much as possible you might as well just film the hot air there because frankly that's all that remains.
@@senantiasa I would have liked to see Paul struggle to become a Fremen, not stroll through the trials like he did in the film (or any challenge presented to him during the 166 Minutes of runtime). He shouldn't have been allowed to have a romantic relationship with Chani before successfully riding a sandworm.
Chani should have been more than his love interest. If I recall correctly, she worked to become a reverend mother in the books and that should have been in the film two. That would have created some tension between her and Jessica and by proxy also Jessica's son.
Frankly, asking why I want character development in a movie about humans is like asking me why I want sauce for my pasta or cheese on Pizza.
@@senantiasa It all seems rushed because the film takes on the last two thirds of the book at once if I recall that correctly.
Splitting Dune 2 is two separate films would probably be the best solution because runtime would indeed become a problem.
If I had to cut something out it would probably be the whole Giedi Prime subplot and the emperor and Irulan scenes besides the last ones where Paul usurps the galactic throne because all of these characters are either nobodies or not relevant after the film concludes.
And Chani had no tensions with anybody other than Paul in the end (and that mainly for marrying Irulan, not because she is a skeptic). The whole skeptic faction among the Fremen is underdeveloped anyways, Villeneuve just said so and that's it.
@@senantiasa Yes, the Bene Gesserit plotting and scheming is important but if I really had to stick to one film for part 2 no matter what I would cut that out to have more time for developing the other characters.
But splitting part 2 into two would be my prefered solution.

To each there own, but I think it's pretty impressive work. Both from an adaptation perspective and just a pure 'movie watching' experience perspective.
Masterpiece of a film. I enjoyed this adaptation, but I don’t think the emotion of love between Paul and Chani worked. She was very skeptical in the movie.
Finally felt like I got what I paid for from a big blockbuster hit. Dune, especially part 2, felt like watching true artwork on screen again instead of the typical mind numbing eye candy or propaganda films that are called movies these days.
Imagine how much better it would have been without Chani's "I am the only smart one, you are all dumb. Religion is fake!" shtick.

@@lordcrunk4790 You can't adapt a 900 page book to a movie, not even two movies. With reasonable length that is. Something has to give. I'm one of those people who would have rather seen Villeneauve adapt Dune into a 10-12 part mini series with 1 hour length each, then we would have gotten the full story. But it still works the way he did it, just like Lord of The rings, which also removed so many elements from the films, most notably removing Tom Bombadil entirely, and thank goodness for that, that character would've destroyed the films 😂

So many people forget that a director is the one who shape the movie and no one should copy his style.
Blockbuster can't have "identity" shaped by the director because every other blockbuster will copy the style just because "it works"
Denis Villeneuve didn't "leveled up" blockbuster, he did the same thing as Scorsese or Kubric during the new hollywood. "independant" movies with enormous budget.
Denis Villeneuve has his own style of filming and you can see this easely. He doesn't know how to film a knife fight. However he is the best at filming location and places (this is why blade runner 2047 is my favourite movie btw)
