How Dune Leveled Up What A Blockbuster Should Feel Like

  • Theres no question, when it comes to Dune and Dune Part 2, something just feels different. The cinematic experience you feel, especially in 70mm IMAX, is unlike anything else in today's cinema landscape. Denis Villeneuve achieved something special with Dune. A novel once thought to be unadaptable, has become the biggest movie in Hollywood. But what exactly makes Dune and Dune Part 2 stand out above the rest of the sci-fi offerings in Hollywood?

One thing I like about this movie is that fact that you can clearly see what's happening, even during battle scenes.
No quick cuts, no overused shaky handheld camera, no forced confusion to make it look like everything is fast paced.
You can see who is who, what is happening, why it's happening, sense the scale of it and it still fits with the rest of the narrative.

Theres alot of them. Sadly, people don't show up to see them alot of the times.
It's the same with people complaining about Hollywood only making sequels or IP we all know.
      1. Those things make money. So, of course they are doing them.
      2. There's hundreds of movies and series made a year. SOO many original IP made each year. So many. People just don't talk about them or don't know they exist. Instead people complain rather than actually pay attention to what's actually happening.

Follow that by the shut down about involvement in fair governance. And not one good guy in the whole show. Even Alan was abandoning his pregnant wife. I kinda felt the same with the first movie, since it looked and sounded amazing, but didn't actually have much of a story arc or anything at all. The second has definitely relieved some of that and made me less hesitant to call it pretty good, but the story still doesn't feel complete, so it is on that line of feeling like it has some substance to it.
The story has been building this entire time though, so the third movie coming will definitely be the deciding factor for me, as to whether what it has built so far has been worth it and fulfilling, or if it was all useless empty nonsense. I am sure book readers would disagree, but since I haven't read the book and don't plan to before seeing the third movie, I can't see the bigger picture to see if everything that is being built and set up right now actually has meaning or was a waste.
It is like there is a bunch of Chekov's guns lying around. In most stories if the Chekov's guns don't go off, it is a disappointment to the audience, so generally if a story sets something up then something comes of it. Right now, so many major Chekov's guns have been set up but nothing has come of them, so for the third movie we need to see what becomes of them or it will make what has come before truly a disappointment instead of masterful build up and foreshadowing. Though since this is really only part way through the original story, this is all probably to be expected.
Can't wait for the third movie.

I wouldn't say these films leveled up, but instead are in the same league of other truly great epic movies from the past. Saying that it's levelling up blockbusters implies it made something that has never been done and that's not true. That bar has been raised already long ago. I get the hype, it's a great adaptation and all, brings very interesting themes to the table, but I think people are overrating it a bit.

So many people forget that a director is the one who shape the movie and no one should copy his style.
Blockbuster can't have "identity" shaped by the director because every other blockbuster will copy the style just because "it works"
Denis Villeneuve didn't "leveled up" blockbuster, he did the same thing as Scorsese or Kubric during the new hollywood. "independant" movies with enormous budget.
Denis Villeneuve has his own style of filming and you can see this easely. He doesn't know how to film a knife fight. However he is the best at filming location and places (this is why blade runner 2047 is my favourite movie btw)

Dune 1 was decent, Dune 2 sucked for me.
I think Villeneuve got so caught up in trying to make this film "feel" real that he forgot about a compelling dramatic arc or character development.
Paul is dull, Chani is dull, Stilgar is a meme, all the Harkonnen are idiots (especially in the second movie) and the emperor is a nobody that nobody cares about. Jessica is the only one that's interesting even in the slightest.
It's cool that you make such an effort to shoot in the Desert for the perfect shot but if you make a film for humans about humans in the desert with the mindset of leaving the humans out of it as much as possible you might as well just film the hot air there because frankly that's all that remains.

    • @hardworkingslacker7233
      @hardworkingslacker7233 16 днів тому +2

@@senantiasa I would have liked to see Paul struggle to become a Fremen, not stroll through the trials like he did in the film (or any challenge presented to him during the 166 Minutes of runtime). He shouldn't have been allowed to have a romantic relationship with Chani before successfully riding a sandworm.
Chani should have been more than his love interest. If I recall correctly, she worked to become a reverend mother in the books and that should have been in the film two. That would have created some tension between her and Jessica and by proxy also Jessica's son.
Frankly, asking why I want character development in a movie about humans is like asking me why I want sauce for my pasta or cheese on Pizza.

    • @hardworkingslacker7233
      @hardworkingslacker7233 16 днів тому +1

@@senantiasa It all seems rushed because the film takes on the last two thirds of the book at once if I recall that correctly.
Splitting Dune 2 is two separate films would probably be the best solution because runtime would indeed become a problem.
If I had to cut something out it would probably be the whole Giedi Prime subplot and the emperor and Irulan scenes besides the last ones where Paul usurps the galactic throne because all of these characters are either nobodies or not relevant after the film concludes.
And Chani had no tensions with anybody other than Paul in the end (and that mainly for marrying Irulan, not because she is a skeptic). The whole skeptic faction among the Fremen is underdeveloped anyways, Villeneuve just said so and that's it.

According to whom though? This is why many people feel a backlash against critics. It's snobbish to assume that simply because you like how a film is made that your tastes should apply to everyone else. Who are you to say how a Blockbuster *should* feel? What if someone else thinks it should "feel" differently?
I personally like the 2000 version a lot better, I think it balanced the different aspects of the story to a much better degree where as Villenuve left out huge parts of the story that dealt with the metaphysical aspects of Dune and just made a war movie basically.

Once again I have to disagree - a lot of directors have read books and fell in love, a lot of directors shot on remote locations (Fury Road, The Martian), a lot of directors use real light (Barry Lindon), and a lot of Nolan's movies look exactly like this one (which isn't a compliment). Nothing in this movie stands out over other movies.
Speaking of realism, how come the desert folk always look so fresh, having never showered once in their life?
And why are the bad guys so impotent and unthreatening? They pale in comparison to the Harkonens in Lynch's version (which has its own flaws, of course).
But again - I know I'm not a part of the herd, that's just my opinion. All I'm saying is, it's a nice and visually stunning movie - but it's not the end of an era and a beginning of a new one. It's just hype.

Which also why I love the end of this movie when Paul is stabbed,
honestly I legit thought that the Paul might die because the dude he was fighting was a forbidable, insane adversary.
Regarding how they look, and their cleanliness, I did'nt think they looked clean all that much and I thought the clothing and costumes
helps with conveying the fact that their environment isn't particularly a clean one.

Chani has become a split personality. They forgot about Jamis's character who was the prophecy critic and sacrificed himself to test Paul and Jessica. They took Jamis's prophecy challenge, removed the dueling part and strapped it to Chani's character, splitting her and making her a pure hypocrite.
Part 1 forgot to use Piter's name. Part 2 forgot to use Irulan's name. Were their priorities visuals and as little dialogue as possible? What main character will they forget to name in Part 3?
