About This Video:
I planted a yam in a large basket like enclosure and then 6 months later harvested, cooked and ate it. My previous attempts at growing yams were stymied by wild pigs and scrub turkeys. On learning that yams are in the area, these animals will seek out any tubers planted and eat them. So my solution was to build a large basket like enclosure to protect the growing vine. 13 wooden stakes were hammered into the ground (an odd number being important in any weaving project) and lawyer cane harvested from the forest was woven between these uprights. The basket was about 1 m in diameter and about 75 cm high.
A large yam, partially eaten by wallabies from a location further down the creek, was dug up and carried to the site. A small pit was dug in the enclosure and the yam simply placed in it. The enclosure was then back filled with dead leaves for fertiliser. As time progressed the vine grew above the basket and a long pole attached to it so it could climb into the canopy making full use of the sun.
After 6 months and no maintenance, weeding or watering the yam had grown into two large tubers whereas the original yam had rotted away leaving a thin husk. The new tubers were dug up using a digging stick. As carful as I was, the yams sill broke off with more tuber still under ground. This portion will probably strike next season anyway. In the canopy, the vine also produced smaller tubbers called “bulbils”. These were collected in a pot to be used as seed yams for a larger garden I’m planning. You can eat bulbils as well but the larger yam is generally eaten instead due to its larger size.
To cook the yam a fire pit was dug about 30 cm in diameter and about 20 cm deep. Wood was piled above the pit and set alight. The hot coals then fell into the pit where rocks where added to retain heat. The coals were scraped aside and the large tuber was broken up and thrown on top. The coals were raked back over it and a fire started on top. This cooked for 30 minutes before being pulled out of the coals. The outer layer of the yam was charred black and burning but the inside was soft and well cooked. The yam was eaten while steaming hot and tasted similar to a potato but with a crunchier texture near the outside much like bread crust. Although bland, yams provide a good deal of carbohydrates and are eaten as a staple in certain cultures. The remaining large yam tuber was tied up in a tree where rats could not eat it (hopefully).
This form of farming is a good way to get around the conventional farming practice of clearing trees to make fields. Instead the yam vine uses the trees as scaffolding to climb on, allowing it to reach the light in the forest canopy. The basket enclosure worked well to keep forest creatures from eating the investment. It also formed a good in-situ compost heap to nourish the yam as it grew. In future, I’d add sand to the mix as yams tend to do well in sandy soil and I expect it would be easier to dig up. Yams do well in dry conditions but will yield more if well-watered so digging a water retaining pit might help. Despite the large size of the yams I grew relative to ordinary potatoes, much larger ones are possible and are indeed routinely grown. The largest one from my research was 275 kg, grown in India. Yams have 116 calories per 100 grams compared to potatoes at only 93. They store well in the dry season as they are adapted to having a dormant period during these conditions. They are versatile in that they can be cooked into chips, roasted, boiled, mashed and made into a type of dough called “fu fu” typically eaten with stews.
To clear up confusion in the nomenclature of root vegetables, a true yam (as seen in the video) belongs to the Family: Dioscoreaceae. The "yam" in north American language refers to an orange sweet potato which belongs to Family: Convolvulaceae. The "yam" in NewZealand language is actually oca (Oxalis tuberosa). Hope that helps.
Would be interesting if you were able to do a video where you collect some salt from rocks or wherever. Which in return you could saltbae onto the yams or whatever in a later video.
It's possible technically. In arid areas if you remove the trees and raise the water table, dissolved salts rise to the surface and concentrate when the water evaporates. I've previously seen a salt like crystal form in the mud I mixed when it dries but it didn't taste like salt. Thanks.
If in indonesian this is "Ubi "
If from west java indonesian is " Hui "..😁😁😁 nice job.
Hey I was wondering how much calories do you think you burn
O Balls yes! Or if there’s anything you can forage for seasoning.
I've eaten yams from the wild before but had never properly cultivated them in a cage like this (pigs usually eat the ones I've planted before). They can get bigger than these too, the largest yam on record was 275 kg grown in India. They have more energy than calories weight for weight than potatoes and can be eaten as a staple food. Also, you don't need to clear forest to grow them as they use the trees themselves for scaffolding to climb into the sunlight.
you are legend
Can you make a large monoculture around your house with this?
You can sell them at Rusty’s 🤙
Are you planning on a "cooking with primitive technology" video, showing how to make them taste like actual food? Maybe add some local herbs, or a pig.
Why don't you boil them? Don't the skins retain a large amount of the calories and nutrition?

Revisiting this video, it really hits home why and how humans developed to function in groups, rather than alone. Because yeah, he CAN do all of this stuff by himself, but look at how much time and effort it takes to set up one yam enclosure, to forage leaf litter for compost, make fire, make storage pots. You're constantly spending calories to make them. Even one additional person is a game changer.

I mean, cultivating yams could provide necessary calories.
On average, yams (not sweet potatoes) weigh 2.5-5kg (5.5-11lbs), containing 2950 to 5900 kilocalories.
Assuming he is off average height and weight (although maybe heavier with those muscles), he would need ~3200 calories a day to mantain his bodyweiggt with a very active lifestyle, such as building structures outdoors and cultivating yams.
Even if only 1 harvest of yams could occur each year, and assuming each bulb planned produces 1.5 yams on average with an average weight of 3.75 kg, only 176 bulbs would need to be planted.

One of my favorite aspects about this channel is it's consistency. This channel, at 8.3 million subscribers is just as it was at 3 million, and the same as it was at 500 thousand, all the way to how it was at 20,000 when I first found this channel. That is the mark of a channel that has found it's niche and fit into it perfectly. Also (as shown by the success of this channel) it is very, very good at putting out content that appeals to and captivates a general audience, while at the same time being informative, and original. I hope everyone who watches can recognize the talent and skill that this channel is endowed with.
What a self sustaining wonder nature is.
Thanks JP. You're a lege.
Thank you for Korean subtitles!
People wondering why they love these videos? Deep inside we have a dream of running from the rusty city, from the office work, from noisy parties. Sometime we want to breath fresh air, eat simple things like yams, casavas and such, we don't have to worry about life. But it's just we can't fulfill the dream ourselves, so here we are, watching others fullfill the dream for us that's why.
Not true? Try to get mature and think twice about it. I just wanna block you.

When my family first moved to rural West Virginia I would see stacks of tires with a small plant growing on top. These are potato "trees." A piece of potato is planted in the ground and when the plant is taller than the width of a tire, a tire is placed over the plant and filled with soil. As the plant continues to grow upward, more tires are added. This process exploits the fact that if soil is placed against the stem of a potato plant, it will produce tubers. In the fall the tires are removed to harvest the tubers. Potato farmers, of course, do not use tires, but instead use a plow to stack soil against the stems, a process called hilling.
I'd like to do this sort of thing in some of my survival videos, think i'll need a few more clothes though in UK. Very good videos man!
