    Finally someone acknowledges the Rocksteady “Shaky” “Jello” footage. It’s been driving me nuts and no UA-camr seems to mention it in their reviews! I also reached out to DJI and they were like we don’t know 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thank you for this!

      @@GreatDayForAHike In my own tests turns out the lowest shutter for Rocksteady to work in 24p is 1/240. I know the 180 degrees rule for a cinematic look to double the shutter speed by the frames, but there is no other way for the Osmo 3 to make it work without jittery. Turns out the results are almost really good to my surprise. Normal motion blur, normal cinematic look, when exporting with the editing software you should choose Optical Flow render and everything is fine!!! Try it! Not all rules are permanent.

      With low light if the shutter speed is not high enough (typically at least 1/192 is needed) this will introduce motion blur and RockSteady cannot work properly with too much motion blur/too low of a shutter speed. I recently explained this concept as it pertains to a GoPro in this video and the same principles apply with the Action 3 as well: ua-cam.com/video/e5Sx3s94syw/v-deo.html

    I had wondered just how ND filters would suit the OA3 given best video is attained with bright daylight and they deplete that light.
    Often time I pondered wether there was something else at play with poorly defined leaves on trees etc in lower light , not just a focus issue , if a focus at all.
    The advent of each filter having the rotatable PL is a top idear . My mini 3 Pro footage with PL filter is a leap forward in colour and definition.

    Great Video. If I'm not planning to use gimbal does that mean I pretty much shouldn't be using ND filters unless i'm 100% still? Can i just use the filters to reduce how much light enters without messing with the fps and shutter speed?
    Also does the 180 degree rule also apply to the CPL filter? Hoping to get some nice videos of the sun, beach and water but I'll also be moving around. Thought these filters would be helpful :(

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  Рік тому +1

      Great questions.
      You can still use the ND filters if you’d like to force the Action 3 into using a bit longer of a shutter speed. Example: You film in 4K 30fps and set your ISO range at 100-200. With an ND filter on in bright light this will force the camera into a bit slower shutter speed to properly expose the footage (keep shutter at Auto). You can also keep RockSteady on provided you do not force the shutter speed to a value slower than about 1/192. When the shutter speed is slower than this the frames are not sharp enough for RockSteady to function properly.
      The 180 degree rule would not be relevant with the CPL filter unless it is an ND and CPL combo. The CPL or PL is great for getting deeper colors and you can use this with RockSteady on and no need to adjust shutter speed.
      Hope this answers your questions!

      You’re welcome. So there is this debate that is still raging as to whether or not the Action 3 has focus issues. Some say it doesn’t and some say it does. Some say it’s only older production months. Some say they are all the same. I will say I have purchased three different Action 3 cameras. One in September 2022, one on November 2022, and one in January 2023. Thus far with all three running the same, newest firmware update I do not notice any difference. I believe the production date may be stamped inside the battery bay on the camera but it is likely hard to see down into there to read it.

    the problem with cinematic motion blur is the need to use a gimbal for every shot, and having digital stabilization Off otherwise the footage will get really shaky. I've lost tons of footage because of this, since i don't have a gimbal hahaha so now i just set my shutter speed to 1/240, at 30 fps. No motion blur, but no shaky footage either, ever! xD
    What i notice in the Action 3 is that it doesn't handle dynamic range well. Sometimes the shadows look too dark and the sky too bright 14:54 for example. Maybe bringing up the shadows in post would make it better? From what i've seen the Gopro handles this much better.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  Рік тому

      Yes, the GoPro overall handles dynamic range better and has better detail in the highlights and shadows. Also, the GoPro has gyroscope data so it makes it possible to use it without a gimbal and then stabilize in ReelSteady afterwards. The DJI Action 3 does not yet have gyroscope data available. Insta360 also offers gyroscope data. DJI should add that feature for the Action 3. It would increase the value of this camera.

  • @Ankit._Sharma

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  4 місяці тому +1

      In this situation I recommend setting a static shutter speed of 1/240, turn Hypersmooth on to the standard mode, and then an ISO Min of 100 and ISO Max of 800. Then balance the exposure with the needed ND filter. Doing this will still give appealing motion blur even if it isn’t precisely the 180 degree shutter angle. A shutter speed of 1/240 will still allow Hypersmooth to function properly.

      @GreatDayForAHike  11 місяців тому

      Great question. Unfortunately since the Action 3 does not have gyro data there isn’t really a workaround. You can still use ND filters of course but you would not be able to use the 180 degree shutter rule without RS making the footage have jitter and ghosting.

  • @gangs0846
    @gangs0846 4 місяці тому +1

    So do you need a nd filter indoors or at darker areas as well for motion blur?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  4 місяці тому

      Motion blur relates strictly to shutter speed and having a slower shutter speed relative to frame rate. An ND filter is a tool that limits the light reaching your camera’s sensor. This then allows for slowing down the shutter speed to let in more light. Indoors and darker areas generally have low enough lighting that an ND filter is not needed in order to get a slower shutter speed.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  Рік тому

      You could potentially do this. If your camera is securely mounted and doesn’t move this might work. When/if DJI makes the gyro data available in the footage from the Action 3 this will make stabilizing in post production possible as well.

    • @LosLocosTacos
      @LosLocosTacos Рік тому +1

      23.976fps is used in NTSC regions. This frame rate is a derivative of the broadcast 29.98fps standard, which was created when color TV was invented to prevent the chroma signal from interfering with the audio. So yes I could have clarified a bit more on that 😃

  • @terryshrives8322
    @terryshrives8322 Місяць тому +1

    I’m not sure, but my action 3 doesn’t like filters if rocksteady is on at all. I always use the 180 rule and my evo is perfect. I get jitters so bad it’s not even funny. It’s all the way down to an nd 8 and it’s terrible at that. Of course if I take rocksteady off it goes away, but without stability, my footage is completely unusable.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  Місяць тому

      That is correct. Rocksteady is a type of EIS (electronic image stabilization) and EIS need sharp enough frames to work properly. This requires a shutter speed of about 1/200 or faster. This is why a gimbal is required if one wants to use the 180 degree rule. However, if you don’t want to use a gimbal there is a way to use ND filters and get some motion blur. I outline this in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/ynGDPGiWwXU/v-deo.htmlsi=3W5dSkF_hd50o5m7

    Does the Stabilisation works with ND Filter on?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  Рік тому +1

      Most of the time, no, because the shutter speed is generally going to be too low. Without those crisp, clear , sharp frames the EIS on this camera will not be able to properly stabilize the footage without a jittery appearance and artifacts. If the lighting allows for manually setting the shutter speed to about 1/100 for 24 fps, 1/120 for 30 fps, and 1/200 for 60fps the stabilization will then tend to work better. However, the main reason to use an ND filter is for the 180 degree rule in order to get motion blur in footage. Therefore, setting the shutter speed to a value higher than twice the frame rate would negate this benefit.
