The most fun I've had in years: 2024 BMW F900GS on-road and off-road review

- The new-for-2024 BMW F900GS has had a 15kg diet, gained 40cc and has some serious off-road options. Join me with Dakar legend Simon Pavey in Portugal for a surprisingly speedy on-road knobbly-tyred ride, followed by some of the best off-road riding I've ever experienced, all on a bike that makes it feel very, very easy. If you're into trail riding then don't sleep on this bike…

All versions of the BMW F800, 850 & 900 GS have been great bikes. However, they don’t weigh much less than the big GS. And, the GS has the engine bulk lower. Making them “feel” about the same weight. I’ve owned multiple versions of each, and that’s my experience. Bottom line, off-road they are both beasts to pickup. So? Don’t drop’em
Living vicariously through you on this one Tim! Gutted to have missed this! Looked incredible 👍🏻
Next time Easyjet will lose my bags instead!
The F series GS (and GSA) has always been known as "the thinking mans GS".
… yeah, thinking I bought a 1250 😂
@@martyn_g What do you mean? You buy this thinking you bought a 1250?
Bloody good video Tim
A good video is one that makes you either want to actively avoid a bike or consider it as your next bolide
And this video does the latter in spades 😀
It is a beautiful bike in my eyes, was looking at a secondhand low km F800gs & then RE released the Himalayan450 at a price & mpg I couldn't resist. Still think the F800gs/F900gs is a sweet spot for 60/40 tar/dirt touring. I'm planning for 25/75, so the Himalayan should suit me better. Thanks for the review & cheers from Downunder.
PS: I always end up adjusting the gear shift up a spline or two.
got mine last week, absolutely a beast. loving it, can't wait to get it on offroad
Congrats, is it top heavy or light. And doesn’t get a cruise control ?
@@AlYassi77 cheers man. I would call it's on the top heavy side but it feels light for a 900 cc bike. I have cruise control on mine, it was in the package. I got the fullest package in my country, with the enduro pro
I think I found the bike BMW designed them rear lights for. Although unsafe, they look smart on this
I like your Amsterdam better then mine , cheers from Holland
Haha thanks!
I was going to say - Amsterdam and hills in the same sentence? Not unless you’re talking about the wind!! It’s at least 5-6 hours ride to find somewhere decent to ride around here!
This bike looks great.
Beautiful bike!
If the UA-cam recommendations that pop up for me is anything to go by it seems that taking something like this to Morocco is currently in vogue.
On this type of offroad, I can easily ride on my cbf600 🙂 Good job.
Of course! Thank you
Coming with a pack means that it doesn't come as standard...
I think it's the other way around for the brake pedal.
The headlight comes straight from the GS 310. In Australia we’re call off road tyres “ knobby, s “ I always find it a bit funny that you Brits call them “ Knobblies “
We’re too shy to say knob I think. You’re right about the headlight, and thanks as always for giving us Bluey
I was born in the RSA, and we always referred to it like our Pommie "mates"(NOT) as: Knobblies. Since I have being in NZ for 15 years, I now referred to it as Knobby's JUST LIKE OUR NEIGHBOURS WE LOVE TO HATE. I just haven't figured out what the effect of sandpaper will be on a knobby, I did see what it did to a cricket ball.
@@2631Fred , what effect do you Kiwi,s have on the poor sheep 🐑
Expensive in denmark but damn it looks sick 👌
The (famous) hills outside Amsterdam??? (0.42) 🤣
Update video on the MT10SP vs the SAS? Happy with the switch?
So far yes, but I've still not done big miles on my MT-10. I've a tour booked for end of May...
I would like something like this but with a 800cc boxer engine.
That’d be neat
Like BMW made with the first GS….the 1982 R80 g/s I owned…40 years ago they got it right 👍
Interested to know if it’s better than the previous 850 GS. That was probably the least interesting bike I’ve owned
I've not ridden the previous one sadly.
the hills just out side amsterdam hahahahahaha
🤣
The hills just outside of....Amsterdam?
😂😂
“just outside” is a subjective measurement. So Portugal is technically just outside Amsterdam, in Tim’s subjective assessment of the distance.
distance isn't the same on the new F900GS ;-)
Rear taillight set up is super confusing for traffic behind. Why would you put indicators inside brake lights🤯
100% agree
KTM did the same stupid thing now....
@@dannygernaat9961 being rear ended is the worst fear. On and off the bike😂 For me anyway
@@twowheelin7361 ikr this is the stupid part of engineering. Only to save a couple of bucks. Those rearlights stop me from buying that bike.
@@dannygernaat9961 yeah same here. They are the same on the bigger GS.
2:38 60 mpg?! No way, that's what i am getting on my Versys x300, with aftermarket sprockets.
The NX500 gets something more, but a 900 getting as good mileage as a 300 makes no sense.
To be fair nearly every 800-900cc parallel twin I’ve ridden gets 58mpg easily!
Did he say "outside the hills of Amsterdam"...dude...that whole intro...it must have been a tough night.
It's been a tough life tbh
@@timrodierides well, you hang in there, you're doing a great job and your reviews are excellent!
Is this a bmw engine or Chinese derived?
Tenere wibes
Where's the rear tail/brake light. Stupidest idea BMW has ever had deleting it.
It does my head in, especially following one and realising last minute that they're indicating...
The 2024 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro is just a much better bike, and you get all the options already in the package.
Why? I'm seriously trying to decide between the two. I currently have a Triumph Explorer 1200 and I'm looking to downsize and be more nimble.
debatable ... :)
Does it look 15k , meh
Is it built in china?
Horrendous looking back end and exhaust
It's certainly... erm... minimalist
Man this exaust is completly out of place ..
I can’t help but be suspicious of all the simiysoinding sound bites from the journos and influencers that have tested this bike
What're you suspicious of?
Pretty good, although a little boring. Thatr sort of riding doesn't say much about the off road capability, norr the road manners. You would have a chance at a lot more subscribers, if you forgot those stupid sexist jokes. Were you sent off to boarding school a little early, maybe?
Sounds like you went to boring school, Steinar. Did your mummy not love you enough?
Great video on the bike - but let up on the gay+lesbian jokes, it's 2024 and you're not doing yourself any favours.
Erm, what gay and lesbian jokes?
14:05 is the point I switched off. I'm not your editor - listen to your own script and grow up.@@timrodierides
@@timrodieridesI reckon the vast majority of people watching your channel are normal individuals mate. Not over sensitive social justice warriors that wipe their arses with Aloe Vera bog roll and think anyone gives a flying about their virtue signalling bollocks .
OK, now I’ve got to go and google pegging? Am I the only one who doesn’t know what it is (but assumes it’s some kind of hanky panky)?
My advice is don't😂
If you don't already know I don't think you want to know..
