Taiwan and Hong Kong coped surprisingly well, because they didn't waste time. As soon as they recognised the potential of the virus, they started testing and isolating, and the people listened.
Honestly (and I'm Australian saying this), I think western countries were just overconfident. Leaders didn't think it would reach their country and citizens didn't think they needed to follow the directives to reduce contact with others.
@J Its a good point. Clrearly some Countries have dealt with this better than others so there may be lessons to learn there. Also, although we might not be able to have physical items in store we could have adaptable manufacturing facilities (like 3D printable parts and designs that can re-use items from other things like vacuum cleaners, etc... All readied to go...) Plans can be created and stored no problem.

UPDATE 27 March:
Unfortunately the deaths increased again, today they were 969 (919 the real data plus 50 not signed yesterday) and I fear it's not even the peak.
The new cases has slowed down a little (5959 against 6153), but we made a few less tests so it's almost the same of yesterday. The new case percentage on the total amount anyway decreased to 7,3% (lowest number ever).
New ICU recovered are 120 (yesterday 123).
Generally speaking about new cases, things are slowly getting better in Lombardy and slowly getting worse in other regions. In the province of Lodi, where I live and where everything started, the cases are continuosly decreasing.
There's still a long way to go :-(

Italy cases per day are still on the rise aswell as the deaths. Naturally lockdown helps but with so many people still going around even in a lockdown with the police doing nothing it really is not stopping. That goes for the entire world. We are all in "lockdown" yet we are still free to go out if we choose. The word lockdown has lost it's meaning really.

@Jay Devine Yup, Italy did some research and found out that 99% of the people that died ( do keep in mind, this is about 1 week old now) had 1 or more preexisting health issues.
This news episode is in an heavy Asian locality outside of Manhattan and in an outer borough. I live in NYC. I am witnessing the many ways news is faked. And for your info. Most Asians are NOT overweight nor diabetic in that locality shown on this video. I have a college alumna friend that resides there. I know the area.
Not to mention the overall stupidity. I mean, the corona challenge that's going on over Tik Tok, the spring breakers, the hoarders who are actually just making it more difficult to contain the virus.

Are they still letting planes fly in and out of NZ? I think these 'lock downs' are not very effective when the countries still allow people to fly in and out. The entire world should restruct flights to cargo only for a while and see how that effects the spread to new countries. The UK's handling of flights has definitely caused a lot of the problems with the media saying there would be checks at the airports, but in reality passengers reported they could fly in from China in the early days without out any check and not so much as a leaflet advising them to issolate.

At this point, I feel like we deserve it. How is every country working this late in lockdown and quarantine, we knew about this since January. January, we knew it was spreading like wildfire, and our countries sat around trying to protect the economy.
Many western countries were simply too arrogant to admit they needed to do what China was doing. It was a "Chinese problem" until it was uncontrollable in their own backyard.
Even now politics is playing with people's lives. Case in point, Boris Johnson refusing to join the EU procurement scheme meant for bulk buying medical equipment quickly and less costly... Because "the UK is not part of the EU". The EU invited Britain to join.
When it was first lockdown in China, I was thinking if the virus spread around the world, only the Asian countries will follow the lockdown. Because they value family and others. Recently some European countries start following the rules, which will saves so many people.
It was already to late in January, remember the first cases in china were November, that's all of Xmas in which tonnes of people flock to NYC, and many other countries!

Remember over two weeks ago when Ohio said that it takes two weeks to have symptoms and that they had at least 100,000 people currently carrying it? They only have 1700 cases confirmed and 29 deaths at the time of this writing. Where are all of the selfies and livestreams of victims or family members if this is such an epidemic? Why did every single country, even the smallest ones in the most remote places, suddenly report having at least one case, all at the same time? The economy's getting screwed right now. The US government signed a $2 TRILLION relief bill because a lot of people are barred from working. How is the country going to pay this back?
