Certainly a round pot tree to me Peter, I would rotate the front each week. The sign of the master teacher is speaking while working, so many stop and talk, then work, their videos seem long and laborious and you cringe to watch them twice, never with your video, I have watched many over and over. Thank you for creating this wonderful legacy that I am sure will instruct for generations.
I seen my neighbor removing small cedars form his front yard on my way to work one day and wished I could have grabbed one. They trunks were pretty big. I am going to have to keep my eye out as winter is coming soon and people remove these things around now. Thank you for this video, you have transformed something hideous into something beautiful.
Bonsai yg bagus. Dan saya beruntung bisa mendapatkan ilmu dari anda tuan. Ilmu dari maha guru bonsai , semoga sukses selalu untuk anda. Terus berkarya dan tetap berbahagia...dari indonesia.
Beautiful work mate. Although here in Australia I wouldn’t be putting my hand into voids in the trunk like that. My Ficus has a large hole in the trunk which is a perfect home for all spiders, snakes and lizards. As soon as I evict one species, another takes its place. I’ve learned to wear gloves now.
So glad you did the privet. I have a couple of them, I see their potential but they are growing too slow and their color is too weak. I'll hit it with some miracle grow and see what happens. Sometimes my plants will get nematodes from being on the ground. Beautiful tree, thank you.
great eye. silly question once the privet is done how long can it be maintained before you must let it rest and become vigorous once again? As I understand from previous videos Bonsai can only be maintained for a while before there health deteriorates and they must be permitted to regain strength before re training.
I have just finished watching the over presentation you did on the repotting the beast into a drum pot. How happy to see the before video. Keep up the great work. Cheers, Dick from Vancouver.
Master Chan, when spoiled for a front, is there not an opportunity to make a tree that serves to be appreciated from all sides? Perhaps on a plinth as a centerpiece? I realize it won't work for every tree, but when you have a unique specimen such as this... and with the expertise you have, i'm sure you could make it work. My Wife suggest you should call it the Privy Privet considering its history.
I've just started watching all your videos through this lock down. I love them. I'll be goin to the garden center tomorrow to look at purchasing my first bonsai. Thanks for your videos. From Australia.
Pro tip: put the mic UNDER Peter's shirt and tape it to hit chest with a large "plaster" or some medical tape and you'll get crystal clear audio from him without all the wind noise, or fabric rustle and branches rubbing on the mic.
I really like the smell of privet, especially after the late summer showers, also I like the flower, So will the privet still flower and give off the fragrance? really like your videos.
@@davidryle1164 Thank you David, quiet possibly cloying, it does remind me of the strolls myself and the wife took. She is no longer alive, till I smell that privet fragrance. So yes it could be sentiment. But I really do like the fragrance.
This is a a fantastic specimen, much better, than the one I have. I love the hollow trunk! Would you not treat it with lime sulphur, to stop it rotting further?. Is this for sale? I never see stuff like this on your website?
Those before and after pictures really do wonders to accentuate your purpose of these pruning videos. And the HD pictures you add really capture some amazing, inspiring visuals that you sometimes don't catch during the videos in motion. Amazing job!
The two words that echoed in my mind as I watched you reveal the heart of that tree, "Merlin's Lament," have inspired me to begin writing again. I hope I can one day manage to find such a prize. Thank you for sharing!
I tried something similar with a large old escallonia, but in the process of lifting it I realised the plant had several different interesting sections at the base so I (probably rashly!) divided it into four plants. I now wonder if this was a bad mistake and whether any of them will survive. Does anyone know of the likely failure rate in dividing a shrub like this?
Yes - Escallonia has the same habit of growing multiple stems from the base. They also form thick trunks. You should have kept yours as a single trunk tree.
It’s funny, in the American southwest this is one of the most invasive species, if you have some in your yard you will ALWAYS have some. But now I know what to do with the giant stump I’m about to dig up!!
@@SuperKrats I have about 80 bonsais and proyects.... know Im talking of the next 5, 10 years but I hope to be there and sure following this channel!!!!!!!
What an awesome bonsai you have made, sir! I'm watching your videos every day now. I guess that wouldn't be in keeping with the tasteful nature of your website, or your demeanor, but you are the Superman of Bonsai to me :)
Never seen a Privet with a trunk like that..or caliper. I had a Bougainvillea that was something like that..and of course it just had to rot and break in half. I miss the hollow it had..was a nice look.
Also go on my path of learning about bonsai one disappointing thing when deciding on your styling you pick a side if I went to see trees I would walk around them I want to see the whole tree nothing but the tree so help the tree if you're only showing me one side that makes me believe you have sacrificed something for this site don't impress me do I 360 tree what I mean is can be viewed from all angles and sides and it's still as appealing it's like the old man with a comb-over he might look good from one angle but I guarantee you there's three he looks like shit
That's a beautiful thing Peter.
When he revealed the trunk I gasped... what a gorgeous and striking tree!!
This tree looks like it has a face. The opening is the mouth, then a nose & finally the eyes are peering out above. Nicely done.
I love how you have such a long range, future focus.
You certainly need a long term view for bonsai
I turned our monstrosity of a privet in our front garden into quite a decent Niwaki over two days after watching your video on the subject 👍
Pictures ?

Stunning
Such an eye!
Too beautiful
Awesome 👌

Holy cow, didn't expect that giant trunk. The leaves remind me of forsythia.
Very nice.
it reminds me of the great deku tree in the orcarina of time when he open his mouth
I was just about to comment this! Totally miniature version!! Haha
Cool Shirt, Peter!
Awesome.
"privet" in russian means "hi" :)
Yeah, pronounced privyet
privyet ;)
pree-vyet
Neat to know.
Здравствуйте (Zdrav-st-vuy-té) also means "Hello" in english but it really roughly translates to, "I wish you health"
Absolutely stunning, from out of that jungle is born a beautiful bonsai. Thank you for sharing this with us Mr Chan most enjoyable.

I will now keep a close eye on the branch and ramification development . If looked after well it will live for many many more years
The natural hollow is awesome
Nice reference to baobab in secunderabad
I'm very curious anf want to know why you have a W-40 can standing on your Bonsai workbench. So the trees come out of the pot easier?
More than likely it's for tools.
We clean our cutting tools with that.
To clean off the sap that sticks to the scissors..
I always use it on my garden tools when I’m done with them. Keeps them oiled and resistant to rusting.

Simple for the gifted is genius for the rest of us! Would this tree benefit from a round pot and a pedestal that allows 360 degree observation?
I am going to plant it in a round Drum pot
Amazing 😁
how much would that cost?
I hear a bit of toilet humor, I click like. Men of culture prevail 😄

Privet has a distinctive odor? Maybe your mistaking for boxwood?
You're one of the few who do. I think the adjective that best describes the fragrance of privet is 'cloying', and I'm being generous.
