Thank you for this. I just got my first Bible ever at age 58 and it’s the Life Application NIV. I have been reading the scripture then after, the translations below it. I’m loving it so far. Thank you for your insights!
Every night, I have a fancy cambridge kjv wide margin that my grandpa gave me, a macarthur study, a reformed study from sproul, and the NET full notes.. I read a chapter, compare commentary between macarthur and sproul, and when needed, look at specific things in the translator notes from the NET.. I then sum up the information I took from those three studies, and make my own commentary in the KJV from what i learned.. It's slow moving, but every single day, I read passages I've heard over and over since I was a kid, and come to understandings that, honestly, blow my mind.. sometimes I feel like I'm cheating, the way that the passages just unlock for me.. it also helps to pray for discernment through the Holy Spirit, of course. I honestly look forward to this study routine each day.
Hey Steve, nice to see you upload again, I can vouche for two of them i have used: The CSB Apologetics study bible and the ESV Reformation study bible. The former has a unique apologetics themed study notes and articles which are very informative for a curious Christian and the latter is great for verse by verse systematic study of the bible. Getting through them takes a lot of time but at the end of the reading plan you are guaranteed to be a well informed mature Christian not shaken by every wind of teaching.
One not mentioned that I have found very beneficial (to me anyway) the past several years has been the Charles Stanley Life Principles Study Bible NKJV
I'm not sure the availability where you are but Bibles like these are always going on sale on sites like Christianbook.com and I'm finding discounts like that all the time.
I agree with your ranking of available study Bibles, but I have never discovered a study Bible that did not made several glaring errors. I have read the Bible through dozens of times and continue to see these errors repeated. I use the ESV but honestly, there are few places where it has answered my questions. 1) There are often too many notes at places where most people already understand the verse, and very few notes where people have questions. 2) Too often notes do little more than restate the verse while not commenting on the word or location in the verse that would be an obvious area for further discovery. At least 1/3 of all study Bible notes could be deleted since people do not need restated verses, and add notes on verses that have clear unknowns in a verse. 3) Study Bibles need to seek the advice from the reading audience. Gear comments to what is needed. Also, column width and references need to be based on reader desire not the desire of theologians of expert level readers.
In most of my SB reviews I try to remind viewers that the “commentary” in them is the authors opinion…educated opinion…but opinion and to understand it as such. Making sure to remember the word of God…is what’s important. I prefer full volume commentaries if I have the option but I do think SB’s are a good option to have around.
This was an excellent succinct overview of best study Bibles, THANK! I have the apologetics Study Bible, love it. Thank you for your transparency explaining MacArthur and the reformed Bible coming from reformed theology. I absolutely love John MacArthur, Sproul, Vodie bachmann, Paul washer, but do not hold to the predestination theology. However they are all amazing brothers in Christ and absolutely fantastic preachers. GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER ! 🙏
@@zackross5896Yes, they are excellent preachers who truly love the Lord! However, when I've tried to listen with an open mind and heart to their doctrine of predestination, none of them could fully explain it and back it up with lots of scripture (maybe one or two verses and can be understood differently taken in the entire context). However on Christian living and most other things I'm in full agreement. We can admire men of the word but must always remember they are human and therefore fallible. I always pray for discernment before reading the bible, or listening to a sermon or Bible lecture. 🙏🙏🙏
@@ArmyScoutMom Have you ever read Sproul's book Chosen of God? If not I suggest you read it. Once you understand election you see it everywhere in scripture. God chose Abraham, he didn't choose God. God chose Noah, He chose David and Jacob, He chose Israel, He chose Isaiah, and on and on it goes. If you are "in Christ" then you too were chosen before the foundation of the world. If you think that you chose God then you may be lost because then you're saved by work and not the sovereign choosing of God. I say "may be" because only God knows for certain. You could be saved and you're just holding on to faulty doctrine. God has mercy on whom He has mercy. We have to let God be God as He is revealed in scripture even when it goes against our feelings. No one comes to the Father except through Christ and no one comes to Christ unless the Father draws him.
I've really enjoyed the Life Application Study Bible using the NLT translation. I've been thinking of getting the ESV study bible as well to get other point of views. Thanks for the video...
I agree, the ESV Study Bible would be my 1st choice. I use it primarily when researching within Logos. My 2nd favorite is the NET, their notes are great. I do research for my pastor and these are my "go to" resources.
Logos is an amazing resource. I kinda wish I had the opportunity to check out the full suite. But alas...it's kinda pricy. But I agree with you...the ESV SB and the NET are fantastic "go to's" for research. Thanks for watching and the comments!! Soli Deo Gloria
The info in the ESV study bible whole slightly reformed in nature is still SOLID. And it’s only slightly reformed leaning. I think that’s why it does so well
The reason I like the ESV study bible the most is because although it leans right, it gives other interpretations of the passage along with it. I am MacArthur caliber reformed, but still want to understand the different views in order to defend the scripturally sound views. I go to the MacArthur when I want to dive deeper into the meaning of the text.
I love the NET. Whenever I compare verses in different translations I find that the NET seems to be both accurate and understandable. Of course sometimes I think the phrasing is more beautiful in another translation but that's a matter of taste. As you said, the notes are some of the best I've seen.
The ESV Study Bible is my main Bible. I supplement with NKJV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible and the CSB Ancient Faith Study Bible. I also have The Word on Fire because some of my Catholic friends don't spend much time in the Bible. It is beautiful (masterpiece artwork). It helps inspire them to get into the Word. You provided a few more for me to look into! Particularly the NET. Thank you!
Really liked your presentation style and must admit that I own 3 of your top 5 Study Bible recommendations. I would also agree that the ESV Study Bible would be my #1 choice. Will be looking into the Open Study Bible and Reformation Study Bible to see if I need to add them to my library. Like you, I too use all of my Study Bibles as references, not reading Bibles. Thanks for an excellent video. God Bless.
I am on the fence regarding study Bibles and you were quite helpful. I love John MacArthur, frequently listen to him and RC Sproul, however, I do not follow all of their views. I think the ESV will be my choice for my first study Bible. I wish I could read all of them ! Thanks and my prayers ...
Oxford Annotated Study Bible is all I ever used until after college. It is all we ever used at my Presbyterian Church. Have since made up for my lack of options. A box of most of my newer study Bibles disappeared in a move earlier this year but still have the Ancient Faith and Tony Evans Study Bibles both in CSB along with the Ryrie ESV in calfskin. It may not be a study Bible but my favorite of everything right now is the NIV Larger Print Compact Bible in blue buffalo leather from Zondervan. Would love it in NLT and/or NASB.
I own the MacArthur Study Bible which was the first Bible I bought as a born-again Christian. I don't know if it's the best or anything, but it has a special place in my heart.
I’ve just purchased one. It’s a hardback with indexing. I’ve used several study bibles through the years. Ryrie Study Bible in NJKV, Life Application Study bible NLT, The HCSB Study bible, The Baker Illustrated Study Bible in CSV, to name a few.
My one and only study bible as of now is the MacArthur. Although I may not agree with all of his insights, his notes are helpful. I think I will have to buy another one which is probably the ESV study bible.
I've benefitted a lot from the Ryrie Study Bible and the Macarthur Study Bible; now gradually adding the Study Bibles you recommend as the Lord provides 😊
Yeah. They’re great tools to have. I use them as reference a lot. Not a horrible thing to have a few different opinions as we study. As long as we remember the text…is the text.
I found a TNIV with leather cover in great condition for $3 at the op shop a few months back. That’s the one I take to work. I have a Jerusalem Bible and the Interpreters Bible at home. Love them all.
I personally use and prefer a study bible which you did not reference or discuss. It is the CSB Study Bible. I have long been a student of John MacArthur's work and own his latest study bible. The notes in the CSB Study Bible are better, I think, than John's notes. I use them both together in my work as teacher and my private work as well. Thank you for your work--may God richly bless you in all you do.
I agree on the ESV. That is my favorite study Bible. The only thing I do not like about it is single column. That’s only because I’m a dual column guy. So I read my Allan reader and refer to my study Bible if I need to dig deeper.
I hear ya. I happen to kinda like both but in all honesty. I don't find myself sitting and reading the actual Scripture part of this all that often. It's really supplemental study so the single column doesn't bother me. I'm using my Allan or my NKJV classic VBV for the scripture mostly. (side by side kinda thing). These are like you said...the "dig deeper" resources. Thanks for the continued Love and Support Brother!
Our church gives out the Life Application Study Bible in NLT. That’s the only one I currently own, but I’m researching others. I have been considering the David Jeremiah Study Bible in NKJV and the New Inductive Study Bible in NASB. I’d not seen the ESV Study Bible, so I will need to do a bit more research on that one.
Great video. I was wondering if Spurgeon made it to the list.😀 From the 5, I have digitally the ESV, Reformation and MacArthur. I definitely agree the ESV study bible is solid. It’s usually my starting point. I need to track down an electronic version of the Spurgeon One. It definitely looks interesting.
I love this Spurgeon Bible. Since the note really are sermon notes...it's not strictly a "study Bible" which is why I like it. If you can't get it digitally...you could prob download a few of his "sermon books" which are amazing and would serve basically the same purpose. As always my friend! Blessings! and Thank you for the continued love and support!
For me, ESV Study Bible, Reformation Study Bible (ESV), Systematic Theology Study BIBLE in ESV (my preaching Bible). I also enjoy the Geneva Study Bible in NKJV, Open Bible, the Apologetics Study Bible in CSB and the HCSB (study edition). Thanks for your video. Durban, South Africa
I don't know that I have a problem with it. It's just not something I've spent any time with and to be honest...there are a few of "all star" study Bibles out there that I tend to recommend more then anything else.
Steve! Really enjoyed this video. I too am a BIG FAN of the CSB translation. I own a CSB Study Bible, the Spurgeon edition and the Hebrew-Greek Word Study Bible in CSB. Also own your #1 choice-ESV Study Bible. I think both of these translation study Bibles truly compliment one another. One concern I have about the ESV is that their study notes ignore the doctrine of the premillennial rapture. This is evidenced in the notes in 1 Thess 4:13 where Paul is describing the Rapture. The study notes in the ESV say it is the 2nd Coming of Jesus, which I believe is not correct. At the 2nd Coming of Jesus, HE WILL COME TO EARTH. In the Rapture, HE is in the AIR. That particular issue is concerning. However, I am very impressed with the basic doctrine articles in the back of the Bible, and very much enjoy the in-text MAPS. Again, thanks for your endorsement of the CSB editions---like you, I am a big fan of this translation. Bruce in TN
From the study Bibles mentioned here in your video, I have the Apologetics Study Bible, the MacArthur Study Bible, and the ESV Study Bible (Personal Size, one in a brown TruTone and one in an Olive Trutone)
@Robbie Cupples I bought the ESV study bible in genuine cowhide leather about 6 months ago.. I have... 3 other copies as well.. including 1 in the large print....tons of notes.......
Recently started using a Thompson Chain Reference Bible in the ESV from Zondervan. Not sure if it is considered a "study Bible" ? But, what a resource. 8,000+ topics and it seems to allow the Bible to interpret itself.
Thank you guys for watching! If you haven't subscribed already please do. Subscribing, commenting and hitting that thumbs up really helps the channel...which means more people can be encouraged and equipped along the way! Thanks for your continued support!
The holy spirit depart from me 9 months ago I feel numb and no remorse no feeling no conviction no nothing what to the holy spirit kept leaving it probably left for good permanently maybe reprobate and conscious seer with a hot iron ........
Probably a silly question but asking for your honest answer lol. If you have the kindle version of the MacArthur SB, would you get a hard copy of it too?
I like the Annotated Dake Study Bible. This is my book of lists and some good translation notes at times. The Reformation Study Bible by Sproul. good solid information in the notes to get some detail information. Ancient Study BIble to read what the early Fathers writings on the various passages.
Hey Steve, I have to agree with your choices here. I own each of the study Bibles you recommend except the Open Bible. I would recommend the ESV Church History Study Bible and the CSB Ancient Faith Study Bible if you have not tried those.
I love the Oxford Jewish Study Bible and the Jewish Annotated New Testament, which allows me to get a Non-Christian view of the scriptures. Although I do love the Complete Jewish Study Bible as a compliment to them both from a Messianic Jewish perspective. This gives me an excellent view of the interpretation of the faith out of which Christianity sprang. This feels very important as we see our interpretation of the Bible through the Christian theological lens which can differ from the Rabbinic Theological Lens. Although, you can probably guess that I abhor replacement theology. It feels like an offence to the God of Israel to think he gave up on his people despite the misquote of scripture in Hebrews (or "Septuagint translation"). Great video though. Most informative.
Those are all texts I've never really had the opportunity to look through. I'd be interested in hearing what they have to say. Thanks for the encouragement and support!
I ended up with csb study bible as my current & only bible and don't like the way my favorite psalms were completely changed. 91 & also as I walk through the valley of the shadow of death... Also a verse that asks what is the deal with the piercing on your chest (CSB)? KJV says hand, NKJV says arm... Which 1 is right? The word of the Almighty God shouldn't be changed unless you are translating petty words to a more modern English language. Still ESV as #1? I'd love to hear anyones opinion on this. What matters the most is that as many changes/rephrases of verses are pointed out to me asap.
We’ll…unfortunately languages are hard to translate literally. Often times they have words we don’t or vise versa. So the translators have to do their best to capture what is meant with their knowledge of language and culture and context. So something like the difference between hand and arm is usually not “all that important”. I don’t think they are changing the words. They’re doing their best to accurately translate Hebrew or Greek into modern English. And differences like that don’t change the intended meaning of the passage. So they don’t bother me much. I have a lot of friends who speak Spanish and see this same thing happening verbally all the time. They use a word or words they know to express something in English that doesn’t have words. Hebrew is especially hard as it’s a real “gut” language that involves emotion and feelings. Thanks for the comments. Hope you are loving that CSB. They are putting out a great product. I hope my comments made sense. Maybe this is a future short video.
I love the line up! You and I have similar taste in study Bibles, translations, and theology. Have you ever read the Reformation Heritage Study Bible? It is my number one, and honestly, by a pretty wide margin. If you like RC Sproul and John McArthur, I think you will really, really like the Reformation Heritage Study Bible.
@@ClaimingChristianity You should totally check it out. It is available many great covers-Dane K Johannsson has a great comparison on his UA-cam Channel. The notes and articles are different than in any other Study Bible, and it is printed at Royal Joengbloed (sp?), alongside Cambridge, Schuyler, and some Allan’s. I assume the calf split is the exact same calf split cover Royal Joengbloed uses for Cambridge, and it’s only $55! I opted for the brown Valenta cow hide though. The paper is high end too, solidly landing the Bible in the upper semi-premium category. A lot of it is reminiscent of TBS, and they even thank TBS in the acknowledgments. I can’t believe how inexpensively they sell these Bibles for-they must be selling them at cost. The size isn’t too crazy either. Anyway, if you like nice Bibles, good values, and are reformed, I would suggest that this is a must have. God bless.
I don't think pidgeon holing one's self is advisable. Would have been nice to see some other leaning view in the list at least. Otherwise you are just programming yourself to tunnel think...
I'm sure everyone that's familiar with John Macarthur's ministry know this but as a reminder he is Reformed concerning the Doctrine of Salvation however he is Pre-Mill, Pre-Trib in his Doctrine of Last Things.
This is true. And thanks for pointing that Out. He’s a dispensationalist (which I am not) and is non confessional…which really means he’s not “reformed” per definition.
What's a good Bible translation and possibly with commentary for normal Christians (Arminians, if you wish) that don't push calvinism or any other agenda and/or heresy? I am originally from Ukraine and all Christians had available there (and Soviet era) was Synodal translation (which is amazing!!) and we used sometimes Scofield's commentary (although i am not a big fan of it, it's good tho). Thank you for any feedback. God bless y'all!
Great video brother! glad to hear that you are reformed in theology NET is amazing! did not expect the CSB apologetics to make it to be honest! but I like that!! ESV is amaziiiiiiiing, changed my life NLT illustrated is fascinating, I think it makes any top 5 in my opinion I like Macarthur, I have it in arabic, too dispensational for my taste, but a great brother in CHRIST and great study Bible!
We have the same top 3 study Bibles! 1. ESV Study Bible (Crossway) - lots of world renown scholars -> very reliable 2. MacArthur Study Bible - hands down, the best study Bible written by one single individual; has the most exegetical, comprehensive notes out of all the Study Bibles in the world today (~25,000 notes!!!) 3. Reformation Study Bible - love Dr. Sproul and his teachings are gold; Confessions on the back really handy!
My top five are: 🎉 1. The ESV study Bible 2. NLT Life Application Study Bible 3. NKJV Illustrated Study Bible, 3rd edition 4. ESV John MacArthur Study Bible 5. NET Study Bible, Full Notes edition MikeInMinnesota
The MacArthur study Bible, the ESV study Bible and the NET full notes all have apps also. MacArthur and ESV are paid versions but they are full notes. And cheaper than getting hard copies for budget concerns
I know this is old, but I’m wondering about the John MacArthur study Bible - is this basically a very condensed version of his one volume Bible commentary? Trying to determine if it’s worth it to purchase his study Bible also.
If you have the single volume commentary. You’re fine. I’d say no real need for the study Bible. I have a video that kinda compares the 3 versions of his biblical commentary.
Thank you for your reviews. I would like to mention: The Evidence Bible NKJV, commentary by Ray Comfort. It is VERY GOOD! I love his Living Waters videos as well. If you already reviewed then no problem. I looked at your list and I did not see it. I have several Bibles, as I am a Big Fan of God’s Word.
I like Ray Comfort! He's a legit guy and love his videos. I don't happen to have The Evidence Bible...but if I ever get one I'll be sure to review it! thanks for the encouragement!
While I have all these and enjoy them the Reformation and MacArthur are both hardcore Calvinist in teaching which does effect their interpretation (or misinterpretation) on several text. They are both excellent references otherwise. The ESV is my favorite (also leans toward theistic determination0 but less noticeably). The NIV study Bible and the CSB study Bible both contain a large amount of useful information as well and while I am not a huge NIV fan at least that one does not take a dogmatic minority viewpoint of soteriology.
also I do not know why... but the regular print crossway ESV study bible comes in single column bible text.. and color maps.... but the Large print comes in double column text and greyish / olive colored maps..Not color...... do you know why this is...?...
I don't really use study bibles much other then the TCR but, of these bibles i would like to get the NET full notes someday and also the Holy Land illustrated
There’s a new TCR coming out in the next year or so. I’m hoping to get one. And the two you mentioned would be breast additions to your study!! Thanks for commenting
I am as well and it's great! I'm also use my father's commentaries from his library along with it. He's a minister so fortunate to have that recourse because those books aren't cheap! After I finish the NIV, I'm moving on to the ESV by Crossway and a few others.
Which one do you have? It’s a real decent resource and I have a couple of them. You just have to be careful when you’re reading any study Bible that you’re being discerning about the commentary. Because of course in the commentary you’re going to get one person‘s opinion. That’s why I usually go to the ESV or the reformation study Bible as my kind of number one go twos… But I’m reformed in my theology and those two happen to be reformed in their theology. Just something to keep in mind
Yeah…this is a legit tool. I have used it a bunch and once you get the hang of navigating around…it’s really nice to have the information if you don’t speak Greek or Hebrew. Lol.
My long-favored Zondervan NASB Study Bible was dethroned a few months ago by the ESV Study Bible. My only issue is, I actually like to haul mine around, so my Pastor will be finding someone who can benefit from my Large Print, and I am now a happy owner of the much handier Personal Size! Great all-rounder.
I never knew of your channel until today. The video was great, so I subscribed. My list in different than yours except that we both agree the ESV Study Bible is the best one. 1) ESV Study Bible 2) The Lutheran Study Bible - ESV (Concordia Publishing House) 3) The Reformation Heritage Study Bible - KJV 4) Tie: 4a) The Reformation Study Bible - NKJV 4b) The MacArthur Study Bible in ing Why a Confessional Lutheran Study Bible? Because I would line up with a conservative Reformed Anglican Theology with some classic Confessional Lutheran overtones. I would be in the minority of Confessional Lutherans who don't accept the 19th Century doctrine of Objective Justification which teaches that all humans are Justified by Christ, even those in hell for eternity, and that only those who accept and believe the Justification of Christ are actually saved. The Lutheran Study Bible should not be confused with the Lutheran Study Bible used by the ELCA. I'm not a fan of the CSB translation. But, if it works for you, that's good.
Thompson Chain Reference Bible, a Concordance and a Dictionary. But it doesn't make much difference what Bible or how long you Read It! If you have Not been Washed by The Blood of The Lamb, you will Not understand It because you will not have The Holy Spirit
Not missing…and not specifically a collection. I don’t happen to have one so I never ended up reviewing it. Pastor Jack is a legit guy…I just never happened to come across it.
I've used my Crossway ESV study Bible for 10 years now, it's highly worn and my most prized earthly possession...I almost can't read it from all the notes I've taken from online sermons over those years. Totally agree with you!
Hey Brother I really want to get the RC Sproul study bible hardcover. I see a lot of reviews saying that the quality for the hardcover RC Sproul study bible is very low. They say how the pages are so thin and low quality. Are these reviews true? Is the hardcover RC Sproul study bible really bad quality?
I agree. The hardcover isn’t the best quality. Kinda small print and paper is thin. I use mine as a reference so that doesn’t bother me or get in the way. But I’d say the other reviews you saw were pretty accurate.
I just came across your page with this video. I have many of the same Bibles you recommend. ESV Study Bible Reformation Study Bible MacArthur Study Bible NET Full Notes Study Bible Are all in my collection. I also own a few others. Thompson Chain-Reference Bible by Kirkbride in 84 NIV. Updated Thompson Chain-Reference by Zondervan in NIV The NIV Study Bible I have looked at picking up a Charles Spurgeon Study Bible. The Apologetics Study Bible looks quite interesting. I have not seen that before. Anyway, it would seem we have many of the same views on Study Bibles. You have a new subscriber. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Thanks for the comments!! And the Sub! You’ve got a good collection of wisdom and knowledge going there. Both the Spurgeon and Apologetics are great resources if you ever come across them…I’d say…snatch um up. Soli Deo Gloria
@@ClaimingChristianity I am planning on picking up the Spurgeon when they come out with the goatskin version later this year. I will have to look for the Apologetics one also now.
I used to be a huge fan of study bibles. I’m not so much anymore. You have to be so careful with them as they often use “man’s words” to twist and push an agenda upon God’s words. All one needs is an actual Bible “King James” and The Holy Spirit. Spend some time in prayer and reading The Bible. It’s a MUCH better way.
I still think that the use of the term apologist has a negative context even though it is meant to be giving s reason for our hooe. That is not the understanding of the word today and therefore it's usage is negative as seemingly making an apology for the Christian faith I wish the word could be scrapped because it conveys a completely different meaning to the majority of people hearing it or reading it in a book summary .
Esv study bible is my primary go to bible too! NIV Zondervan Biblical theology study bible with Don Carson as the general editor might be a good rival to the esv study bible.
I wish I had a good answer for you. I only have the NLT Study Bible but not the NLT Illustrated...so I haven't been able to take a look at it. When I get it...I'll let you know. Thanks for watching!!
There’s a lot out there that don’t. And technically MacArthur isn’t strictly reformed. He’s really a dispensationalist…lol. But that may be splitting hairs. Either way…he’s a gifted theologian and preacher for sure.

Glad it was helpful! And I like the Life App notes too. I use them in lesson prep.
I have the MacArthur Study Bible and I love it! I’m waiting for my Reformation Study Bible 😊
Those are two great Study Bibles!!
Seems like everyone ranks the ESV Study Bible highest of all even by non-Calvinists
Thank you!
The Net full notes is different and awesome. Glad it was helpful! SDG
God Bless.
Glad it was helpful. They’re good references…that’s why i keep a few different ones around. Just to see what different views are (if that occurs). SDG
Glad it was helpful. Can’t go wrong with the ESV SB!
Sorry to hear about the loss. But glad you still have a few to read and study!
Thanks for your excellent recommendations. I have all but the Open Bible. The ESV Study Bible is my favorite as well.
It's a good one! SDG
I own the MacArthur Study Bible which was the first Bible I bought as a born-again Christian. I don't know if it's the best or anything, but it has a special place in my heart.
It’s a great SB! Glad you’re tearing it up!!
I've seen over and over His commentary is good, but not application.
MacArthur is a heretic. Stay away from his dangerous Lordship Salvation Theology. It is modern day Phariseeism.
I’ve just purchased one. It’s a hardback with indexing. I’ve used several study bibles through the years. Ryrie Study Bible in NJKV, Life Application Study bible NLT, The HCSB Study bible, The Baker Illustrated Study Bible in CSV, to name a few.
I need a Baker a illustrated…but those are all great Bible’s.
My one and only study bible as of now is the MacArthur. Although I may not agree with all of his insights, his notes are helpful. I think I will have to buy another one which is probably the ESV study bible.
Both good choices. I agree...his notes are very helpful...as long as we remember they're just his notes and the Word of God...is the Word of God.
Nice Bible for $3! That’s a good find!
I read the CSB study bible a year or two ago. I use it regularly. It just barely didn’t make the list. Solid tool though. I agree.
Large print edition of ESV study bible is double column. Only drawback is pictures are not full color as in standard edition but two-color.
I was wondering if Spurgeon made it to the list.😀
From the 5, I have digitally the ESV, Reformation and MacArthur.
Thanks for sharing Ashley! That’s a solid line up. And I’m excited to hear from South Africa!!! On the wall you go!! Soli Deo Gloria
I am in search of which to buy, but I'm surprised that the Tony Evans SB isn't on anyone's suggestion list
Bruce in TN
Thanks Bruce!! For the encouragement and the comments!!
Yeah…the TCR is kinda in a category all it’s own…and it’s a great Bible to have! Read it well my friend!
I have 4 out of 5. I have never heard of the Open Bible. Thanks for your take on these!
It’s a good one! Thanks for watching! Soli Deo Gloria

Nice list!
Hey Steve, I have to agree with your choices here.
I own each of the study Bibles you recommend except the Open Bible.
I would recommend the ESV Church History Study Bible and the CSB Ancient Faith Study Bible if you have not tried those.
Yep. Those are all good. I’ve reviewed most of the modern SB’s
Thank you for this list. This is the second time I have watched it.
Glad it was helpful!
The ESV Study Bible’s layout is so easy to use and read. I haven’t found another Study Bible that’s better.
@@ClaimingChristianity Maybe check out Artscroll Stone Edition Tanach for extra insights.
I haven't but it has the word reformation in it so now I'm curious. I'll have to see if I can find one. Thanks for watching!!
This is a great video brother!! Seriously!! Spot on, on all points.
Thank you my friend!!! Soli Deo Gloria!
Great video brother!
glad to hear that you are reformed in theology
NET is amazing!
did not expect the CSB apologetics to make it to be honest! but I like that!!
ESV is amaziiiiiiiing, changed my life
NLT illustrated is fascinating, I think it makes any top 5 in my opinion
I like Macarthur, I have it in arabic, too dispensational for my taste, but a great brother in CHRIST and great study Bible!
Thanks for the encouragement and the comments!!
We have the same top 3 study Bibles!
1. ESV Study Bible (Crossway) - lots of world renown scholars -> very reliable
2. MacArthur Study Bible - hands down, the best study Bible written by one single individual; has the most exegetical, comprehensive notes out of all the Study Bibles in the world today (~25,000 notes!!!)
3. Reformation Study Bible - love Dr. Sproul and his teachings are gold; Confessions on the back really handy!
They’re good ones!!
I recently purchased The Jeremiah Study Bible and The Tony Evans study Bible. Like them both.
My personal favorite that I've been using for over forty years is Bullinger's Companion Bible.
Thanks for the video, I recently picked up an ESV Large Print Study Bible at my local thrift store for 10 CENTS! I almost fainted.
Nice find!! And yea…hahaha. That thing is huge!
My top five are:
🎉
1. The ESV study Bible
2. NLT Life Application Study Bible
3. NKJV Illustrated Study Bible, 3rd edition
4. ESV John MacArthur Study Bible
5. NET Study Bible, Full Notes edition
MikeInMinnesota
That’s a good list!
Great review and Tony Evans study Bible is Good one
I haven’t had a chance to review the Tony Evens yet. I gotta try to get one. Thanks for the comment!!
@@ClaimingChristianity the Tony Evans study and bible commentary is awesome
The MacArthur study Bible, the ESV study Bible and the NET full notes all have apps also. MacArthur and ESV are paid versions but they are full notes. And cheaper than getting hard copies for budget concerns
Yes! They do. Thanks for mentioning that.
@@ClaimingChristianity also the ESV digital has other resources! Though I’ve not done a huge deep dive into them
I know this is old, but I’m wondering about the John MacArthur study Bible - is this basically a very condensed version of his one volume Bible commentary? Trying to determine if it’s worth it to purchase his study Bible also.
If you have the single volume commentary. You’re fine. I’d say no real need for the study Bible. I have a video that kinda compares the 3 versions of his biblical commentary.
@@ClaimingChristianity
Okay, I’ll check that out. Thank you!
Thank you for your reviews.
I would like to mention:
The Evidence Bible NKJV, commentary by Ray Comfort.
This is helpful. Thank you. Im looking to get the Macarthur and the esv study large print - watching for an ebay deal.
You’ll like um!!
I don't. They (the publishers) seem to change this up from time to time and I don't know if there's an actual reason. Or just to switch it up.
I recommend the Companion Bible from E.W. Bullinger.
I don’t have one. I’ll have to check it out
Great suggestions! Another great video 📸!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for the encouragement!!
The NIV Study Bible is the bible I'm currently studying.
How are you liking it? the layout...comments...are they helpful! Thanks for sharing!
I am as well and it's great! I'm also use my father's commentaries from his library along with it. He's a minister so fortunate to have that recourse because those books aren't cheap! After I finish the NIV, I'm moving on to the ESV by Crossway and a few others.
I use the CSB Study Bible
I read through that this year and I LOVE it! The CSB translation as a whole has become one of my favs! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hi! What do you think of the NKJV Study Bible?
Which one do you have? It’s a real decent resource and I have a couple of them. You just have to be careful when you’re reading any study Bible that you’re being discerning about the commentary. Because of course in the commentary you’re going to get one person‘s opinion. That’s why I usually go to the ESV or the reformation study Bible as my kind of number one go twos… But I’m reformed in my theology and those two happen to be reformed in their theology. Just something to keep in mind
Thank you sir. I use the Heb-Gk Key Word Study Bible (ESV) is it considered a good one?
Yeah…this is a legit tool. I have used it a bunch and once you get the hang of navigating around…it’s really nice to have the information if you don’t speak Greek or Hebrew. Lol.
My long-favored Zondervan NASB Study Bible was dethroned a few months ago by the ESV Study Bible. My only issue is, I actually like to haul mine around, so my Pastor will be finding someone who can benefit from my Large Print, and I am now a happy owner of the much handier Personal Size! Great all-rounder.
Yeah. The bigger they are they more difficult it becomes to EDC. Glad you found one that works a little better for that.
I never knew of your channel until today. The video was great, so I subscribed.
My list in different than yours except that we both agree the ESV Study Bible is the best one.
1) ESV Study Bible
2) The Lutheran Study Bible - ESV (Concordia Publishing House)
3) The Reformation Heritage Study Bible - KJV
4) Tie:
4a) The Reformation Study Bible - NKJV
4b) The MacArthur Study Bible in ing
Why a Confessional Lutheran Study Bible? Because I would line up with a conservative Reformed Anglican Theology with some classic Confessional Lutheran overtones. I would be in the minority of Confessional Lutherans who don't accept the 19th Century doctrine of Objective Justification which teaches that all humans are Justified by Christ, even those in hell for eternity, and that only those who accept and believe the Justification of Christ are actually saved. The Lutheran Study Bible should not be confused with the Lutheran Study Bible used by the ELCA.
I'm not a fan of the CSB translation. But, if it works for you, that's good.
The MacArthur Study Bible should be NKJV. My Kindle Fire miscorrects what I type. 🙂
Thanks for the encouragement and the sub! I do my best. And you have a good list there! Soli Deo Gloria
I use the SOTR , Reformation Heritage Study Bible, NASB Study Bible.
What's your fav?
All three of them!...
It would be beneficial if you mentioned which study bibles were Calvinism vs. predestination based.
I do kinda talk about that in some other videos. The ESV SB, Reformation SB and MacArthur SB all lean reformed.
I use the companion Bible. It’s my go to Bible
I don't think I've ever checked it out.
Thompson Chain Reference Bible, a Concordance and a Dictionary. But it doesn't make much difference what Bible or how long you Read It! If you have Not been Washed by The Blood of The Lamb, you will Not understand It because you will not have The Holy Spirit
Hi just see your video, what about the spirit filed life bible Jack Hayford 3rd version seem to miss in your collection?
Not missing…and not specifically a collection. I don’t happen to have one so I never ended up reviewing it. Pastor Jack is a legit guy…I just never happened to come across it.
I've used my Crossway ESV study Bible for 10 years now, it's highly worn and my most prized earthly possession...I almost can't read it from all the notes I've taken from online sermons over those years. Totally agree with you!
Very cool!! Thanks for the comments!!
Why don’t you get an ESV Interleaved Bible for all of your notes? I have one and I love it!😊
John MacArthur Study Bible! Wow! That's what I would like to replace my Open Bible with. The Second Edition Thumb Index Legacy Standard Bible ❤️💕
It’s a good one!
Have you ever seen the Criswell? Is it good?
I have not...so I dont' have much of an opinion sorry.
Curiously no mention of the most influential reference Bible of all time.. the old scofield reference bible
The Open is great particularly for newer converts
Yep...great starter. Just the right amount of info
I just came across your page with this video. I have many of the same Bibles you recommend.
ESV Study Bible
Reformation Study Bible
MacArthur Study Bible

Thompson Chain-Reference Bible by Kirkbride in 84 NIV.
Updated Thompson Chain-Reference by Zondervan in NIV
The NIV Study Bible
I have looked at picking up a Charles Spurgeon Study Bible.
Soli Deo Gloria

why study magical thinking books?
My first permanent Bible was the Open Bible which was a gift from my Pastor and is now all these years later is falling apart 😢
No sad face. Put it on a shelf and get a new one! It was well loved,
What happen to the Dake's Study Bible?
I don’t happen to have one. I don’t even think they’re really in production cause I haven’t seen it around.
I recommend RVIC for translation accuracy
I don’t believe I have one of those. I’ll have to check it out.
I only use KJV because the other versions don't say the same thing. They have to start with the King James and make 200 changes to make a new version.
I like the NLT Study Bible and the NIV Study Bible
The Jimmy Swaggart study Bible large print in the best for me.The Drake Bible has more study notes than any other.
Orignal 1611 kjv is underrated what is unicorn in bible In isaih in 1611 will answer for you in side notes .Will tell you where it came from in front.
I still think that the use of the term apologist has a negative context even though it is meant to be giving s reason for our hooe. That is not the understanding of the word today and therefore it's usage is negative as seemingly making an apology for the Christian faith
I wish the word could be scrapped because it conveys a completely different meaning to the majority of people hearing it or reading it in a book summary .
Are the notes in ESV the same as the KJV study Bible?
Notes meaning actual textual foot notes. Those would be similar. Note meaning "study notes"...no.
Esv study bible is my primary go to bible too! NIV Zondervan Biblical theology study bible with Don Carson as the general editor might be a good rival to the esv study bible.
I actually have the NIV Biblical Theology on the way!! So I’m looking forward to reviewing it

Reforms theology is something that I don’t fully agree with that being said John, MacArthur’s Bible is one of my favorite Bible ever!
There’s a lot out there that don’t. And technically MacArthur isn’t strictly reformed. He’s really a dispensationalist…lol. But that may be splitting hairs. Either way…he’s a gifted theologian and preacher for sure.
