I primarily study from the Reformation Study Bible, but I also will utilize the ESV, Ancient Faith, and Life Application study bibles to get a well rounded perspective.
I will be the different one here. For my physical Study Bible, I love the Open Bible (KJV, NKJV, NIV). It only has around 120 short notes on basic topics - but has NO exegetical notes. It also has an extensive topical index. It helps me to dig into the Scriptures for myself, without relying on someone else’s thoughts and explanations. When I want or need explanation, I consult the notes in my digital Study Bibles. (The older I get, the harder it is to read the notes in a physical Study Bible)
I’m fascinated by the Cultural Backgrounds Bible since I’m studying the history of Israel during the divided kingdoms before the exile & the corresponding prophets this year. Thanks for this good information. ❤️
I love my cultural backgrounds study Bible. I also have the ESV archeology, NIV archaeological, and CSB Holy Land and the cultural backgrounds in NKJV is my favorite. In addition to all the awesome content I love the red shiny hardcover.
I can't say that I rely on a singular study Bible, however I do find myself reaching for my ESV Study Bible more than any other. I would absolutely love to see it in a two volume set (premium or otherwise) with a reference Bible as one volume and the study notes in the other. It would be great to take the reference Bible as a daily carry, and be able to leave the notes at home.
I just wanted to mention Thomas Nelson’s KJV Study Bible: Full Color Edition and their NKJV Study Bible: Full Color Edition study Bibles. Both are excellent with an appealing format and lots of color and visual appeal and surprisingly they have different study notes.
That NET full notes is interesting to me, thanks for mentioning it! I've been enjoying the Thompson Chain Reference NASB '77 version, the possibility for deep dives in the word is pretty cool there.
Hey Tim, this video came on the heels of my email to you just last week inquiring about the New Inductive Study Bible. Hope to see that on your channel soon.
Wow! I'm renewing my faith and trying to find a excellent study Bible that will help me to understand how the Bible was written. I thank the 3 of you for your input. My conclusion is that I will need to find at least 2 study Bibles to help me with my journey. Peace.
THIS is crazy!!!! I have that Bible too, and 5 Schuyler bibles and I keep going back to this one because of the size!!!! It is so wild that you have ALL those bibles to choose from, as do I, and we keep going back to the cheap one because it truly has the best size 😊 Thank you for the reviews of bibles… they are very informative!
The ESV Student Study Bible is a good middle ground between the standard ESVSB and the ESV Concise SB. One of my go-to tests to see whether a study Bible is trying too hard to be a one-volume commentary is the first page of Genesis. If the book can't fit at least five verses on that first page, it's going overboard. If it can fit the bulk of Genesis 1 on the first page, then it's too light. The ESVSB has a paltry two verses, the Student SB has 8 1/2 verses, and the Concise SB has 23 verses.
For the pentecostal, folk, I highly recommend the KJV Life in the Spirit Study Bible, its counterpart MEV Fire Bible, and Jack Hayford's NKJV Spirit Filled Life Study Bible.
Always good to see the three Tims together. TN’s full colour KJV Study Bible remains my favourite. Slightly surprised Tim N didn’t mention the LASB, I recall him saying that one had a big impact on him, as it has on many others.
Still waiting on all the NET premium bindings to drop. Thinline, full notes, etc. Paste-down can only get you so far when you bring it everywhere and use it all the time. Dont think I'll wait up on the NET study bible though, thats an eternity away
I have tons of Bibles/study Bibles but the 2 I've reached for the most I think are Life in the Spirit and Nelson NKJV Complete Study System -- Life in the Spirit is now fire Bible but I like the format better in the other and NKJV is now Nelson NKJV Study Bible. ESV study Bible I use but it's a chunk and a TON of info - usually more info than I can absorb LOL!
I looked at the NET full notes and really disliked the layout. I bought an electronic copy with full notes, and I use the notes all the time while reading ESV, CSB, and LSB. I admit I do not care for the NET text, but the notes are awesome. I wish I could buy a hard copy of the NET notes only as a one volume commentary.
How about Thompson chain-reference before zondervan, the original King James version Thompson chain-reference kjv, do you have a video review on the original Thompson's chain reference before zondervan.
The reason I ask is because after zondervan bought Thompson's chain they took out things and added things they ruined the Thompsons chain-reference Bible.
I’ve been trying to find the NRSV cultural background study Bible; however, I’m having quite a bit of difficulty. Do you know of a company who I can send an e-book to that will both print and bind?
Great video, thanks Tim… Would you happen to know where to find an audio version of the NET Bible, or if one is in the works of being recorded? I’m a visual learner and love when I can listen to a (non-dramatized) version of Scripture as I read along. I can speed up the time, and it helps with learning names of people and places.
what are the thoughts on the Reformation Study Bible?.. there are a ton of less popular ones out there such as The Rock Of Ages the Ryrie The Dake's the Scofield the Open Bible Criswell Bible Believer's Study Bible Ruckman Bible Common Man's Falwell's Farstad's and countless others... how does one decide when so many of these have very good notes...? just some ..more notes than others... oh yes.. can't forget John MacArthur.... the list is too vast to mention all of them..
I won’t buy any vanity study Bibles, that is, ones with peoples names stuck on the outside. It advertises that one is by their biases along with their knowledge. I prefer a more universal study Bible like the ESV.
The Old Scofield always gets forgotten-and yet there’s a reason it’s still in print a century later when hundreds of other study Bibles have come and gone!
@Vicki H You can, but if the passage is translated poorly, then everything that follows from it will be affected. But hey, the NLT is better than its predecessor, The Living Bible, which really isn't even a translation. It's a paraphrase. I actually have an NLT Life Application Study Bible in my collection, but I wouldn't recommend it as a primary, or even secondary, study bible due to the weakness of the translation.
@Vicki H I apologize if I came across as condescending. That certainly wasn't my intention. I do think that the NLT is an objectively bad translation, though. It's pretty clear to me that you and I aren't coming from the same place on this subject, so let's just agree to disagree.
I love the NLT Application Study Bible. NLT is a legitimate translation as 90 bible scholars worked on the it. It is NOT a paraphrase like 'The Message'.
isn't the N.E.T. bible by default a study bible already?.. I do not care for the Full Notes edition as this was a let down for me since it was in single column text... UGH... If I was using it to preach from... OK .. but for normal reading?.. the double column... I have found the N.E.T. bible with its 59,000 + notes has way more notes in it as it stands than many of these so called study bibles that are out there already...I use the N.E.T... when I want to read a passage with a dofferent take on it.. since the N.E.T.. pretty much is a stand alone translation on it's own..
No I don't like zondervan Thompson chain-reference King James Bible they take things out that we liked in the Thompsons chain it's not the same, if anybody out there listening don't by zondervan by the original Thompson chain-reference Bible it's much better to buy the old version at least the 4th edition or 5th edition but anything else it's a zondervan and I wouldn't buy a zondervan Bible.
Love it when the Tim Trio makes an appearance
I primarily study from the Reformation Study Bible, but I also will utilize the ESV, Ancient Faith, and Life Application study bibles to get a well rounded perspective.
Love the Thompson Chain Reference and the life application bible
As you should

It sounds like a good one!
I love my cultural backgrounds study Bible. I also have the ESV archeology, NIV archaeological, and CSB Holy Land and the cultural backgrounds in NKJV is my favorite. In addition to all the awesome content I love the red shiny hardcover.
Where do I get started studying things like this?
@@kevvy22 Can you be more specific? Or do you literally mean “where do I begin (in the Study Bible)”?
I'm going to have to agree with Tim on this one.
Yes!!! Thank you….oh wait…
🤣😆😂
Love the “Timity” 😄😇. Thank you for sharing this clip Tim. 👍👌
Thanks for sharing this segment, Tim! I love interacting with both of you and hope we can do it again some time!
Absolutely!
I can't say that I rely on a singular study Bible, however I do find myself reaching for my ESV Study Bible more than any other. Hey Tim, this video came on the heels of my email to you just last week inquiring about the New Inductive Study Bible. Hope to see that on your channel soon.
I love the MacArthur Study Bible and the ESV Study Bible!
Yes! Those are excellent Study Bibles jammed packed with good information. A distant third is the Reformation Study Bible.
Wow! I'm renewing my faith and trying to find a excellent study Bible that will help me to understand how the Bible was written. I thank the 3 of you for your input. My conclusion is that I will need to find at least 2 study Bibles to help me with my journey. Peace.
I think I might have to get that Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible. Every mention of it has been very positive. Many thanks The Three Tims. 😀🇦🇺😊
Go for it!
THIS is crazy!!!! I have that Bible too, and 5 Schuyler bibles and I keep going back to this one because of the size!!!! For the pentecostal, folk, I highly recommend the KJV Life in the Spirit Study Bible, its counterpart MEV Fire Bible, and Jack Hayford's NKJV Spirit Filled Life Study Bible.
Absolutely agree, Anthony. The Fire Bible is by far my favorite study Bible. It has a Biblical, balanced Pentecostal commentary.
I’ve been considering getting the Fire Bible. Good to see some recommendations for it.
I have been eying the Fire Bible for some time. And in the MEV version. I may give it a try.
The Spirit filled life Bible is the BEST
Always good to see the three Tims together. TN’s full colour KJV Study Bible remains my favourite. Slightly surprised Tim N didn’t mention the LASB, I recall him saying that one had a big impact on him, as it has on many others.
The LASB should have been mentioned... I know soooooo many people who love it.
The Life Application Study Bible changed my life, however at this point in life and us only having time to share two each it’s not at the top for me.
(1) ESV STUDY BIBLE
(2) NIV CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS STUDY BIBLE
(3) NLT LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE
I just bought my daughter that Foundation study bible... it's pretty much the same size as an average bible which is great... notes in it are good.
The Spirit Filled Study Bible and the Life Application Study Bible get my vote. (The NIV Study Bible has been a long favorite of mine).
💯
Definitely depends on what you're looking for in terms of the type of information you'd like to study.
I got The niv study Bible about a month ago and I am loving it .
I love when you 3 are in a video together
Reformation Heritage Study Bible has lots of helpful features.
Still waiting on all the NET premium bindings to drop. Thinline, full notes, etc. Paste-down can only get you so far when you bring it everywhere and use it all the time. Dont think I'll wait up on the NET study bible though, thats an eternity away
I'm about to take matters into my own hands and get some rebinds made.
Reformation study bible...my fave😊
What about the esv reformation study Bible by RC
ESV is really good and lots of information.
I am learning a ton from you guys. Thanks!
Glad to hear it!

Any of you reviewed the "Modernized Geneva Bible New Testament Boxed Set" yet.
Can you recommend a study bible with the deutercanocial books or a Catholic Study Bible
I’ve been trying to find the NRSV cultural background study Bible; however, I’m having quite a bit of difficulty. Do you know of a company who I can send an e-book to that will both print and bind?

Great video, thanks Tim…

Not that I know of, sorry!
Longprimer, 7, Concord.
I like Dake's Annotated Reference Bible.
what are the thoughts on the Reformation Study Bible?..
there are a ton of less popular ones out there such as
The Rock Of Ages
the Ryrie
The Dake's
the Scofield
the Open Bible
Criswell Bible
Believer's Study Bible
Ruckman Bible
Common Man's
Falwell's
Farstad's
and countless others... how does one decide when so many of these have very good notes...? just some ..more notes than others... oh yes.. can't forget John MacArthur....
the list is too vast to mention all of them..
I like the John MacArthur Study Bible, myself.
So do I
Me too
Ancient Faith Study Bible. Very interesting comments from church fathers. CSB version.
Add to these Adam Harwood's Christian theology and Köstenberger/Goswell's Biblical theology !
Thank you for this vedio
Our pleasure!
What about the grant Jefferies Study Bible ?????
Never heard of it. 🤷🏼♂️
Life Application Study Bible
To many study bibles insert their personal doctrinal stances
Like the Spice Girls, there’s a Tim for everyone.
Ha!
Nice! I actually have all the full versions of these. No need to bleed my wallet more lol.
I won’t buy any vanity study Bibles, that is, ones with peoples names stuck on the outside. It advertises that one is by their biases along with their knowledge. I prefer a more universal study Bible like the ESV.
I thought I owned them all, but apparently I need one more. 😂 #foundation
You all missed: MacArthur, Scofield, and Ryrie!
The Old Scofield always gets forgotten-and yet there’s a reason it’s still in print a century later when hundreds of other study Bibles have come and gone!
The dispy Trinity
♥️♥️♥️
Well, I went into this feeling the ESV Study Bible is the best study bible and that seems to get a strong endorsement.
So many Tims, so little time
Ha!
I dont see a link to the full video..
It was about 3/4 of the way down in the video description and information:
ua-cam.com/video/IuTy8MgO55s/v-deo.html
It’s below the list of bibles.
The Triune Tims
NLT Illustrated Study Bible? and New Belivers NLT Bible?
The NLT is too far on the dynamic equivalence end of the translation spectrum to work well as a study bible.
@Vicki H You can, but if the passage is translated poorly, then everything that follows from it will be affected. But hey, the NLT is better than its predecessor, The Living Bible, which really isn't even a translation. It's a paraphrase. I love the NLT Application Study Bible. NLT is a legitimate translation as 90 bible scholars worked on the it. It is NOT a paraphrase like 'The Message'.
I'm thinking about starting a channel that reviews Bibles called, Not Tim Bible Review.
😂
The open bible and the Fire bible
isn't the N.E.T. bible by default a study bible already?.. I do not care for the Full Notes edition as this was a let down for me since it was in single column text... UGH...
