- Killer whales have been ramming into boats and even causing some to sink in a spate of recent attacks off the coast of Spain and Portugal. But the reason for this erratic behaviour by some orcas remains a mystery.

It would also be wise to make sure these vessels are not carrying the means to destroy these orcas.
I simply think the rudder, which moves ( key info) is the easiest and most attractive target. End of story. I would bet my life the orcas do not have any idea on the boats engineering and its steering mechanisms... cmon dude
@@mondop5270They might not get the 'engineering'; but they definitely understand rudimentary causation- evidenced by the tricks they learn to do in amusement parks. they've learned to flip sharks on their back to induce paralysis, so they can leisurely eat their livers. They know how to beach themselves and wait for the tide to pull them back, how to capsize small ice caps for seals.
If they wanted anything other than to shut the boat down (ie sinking the vessel or a people snack) they would, COULD do it.
@@mondop5270 Orcas know that the rudder steers the boat simply by observing the boat change direction as they swim behind or underneath it, same as observing a car turn left when the steering wheel is turned left. Mako sharks are aware of this also as they swim up from underneath and bite the tails off swordfish..
Orcas know that fin like protrusions are essential for most fish and marine mammals. The rudder of the sailboat is just the thinnest and most fragile part of the hull. They probably just realized it was the only thing they could tear off. People trend to anthropomorphize far too easily.

@@mondop5270 Why not? Give me facts, backed up by proof they are not aware on a cognitive level. That they cannot recognize a treat, that they are not highly intelligent. That a predator does not realize when another is taking their food source. That most animals would not notice you throwing stuff they don't want in their area, even dogs will move things they don't want on their bed. Do orcas look outside the water to analyze how to get to food when they escape the water? Your education is the topic that is humorous.

They' are not attacking boats, Orcas are really intelligent creatures that are constantly learning new things, so the reason for approaching boats and causing damage, is that they have learned something new, that being that seals constantly get away from them by jumping into boats, they are trying sink the boat the same way they flip glaciers when they know a seal is resting on top of it..
Yes. But they only seem to be attacking the rudders of sailboats, not the motor powered boats that seals typically try to catch a ride on.

The reason is probably increased military presence of ships and submarines in seas, which heavily use underwater sonars, disturbing maritime life.
Our boats are hurting them, the whales are telling us

It could be one of the many long awaited consequences of abuse and mistreatment in the previous decades like the Sea World incident and many other unrecorded harassment apart from accidents towards them. It is only a matter of time when nature will strike back at those who harm it. It is time for mankind to realise that they do not own nature but are just stewards and stewardesses of it.

This is an entertaining idea but it's more likely that there is a food shortage and they've figured out we feed on the same things.
Typically when this happens in nature competition begins and two predator species initiate conflicts in order to eat and thus survive.
Mankind has a very fantastical view of itself but this is likely no more different then wolves and bears fighting for a meal.
I believe the whales remember everything that has happened n has every response to trauma and survival instinct like any other live human/ animal for example when marineland wanted orcas they captured one n orcas travel in family pods so theyd feel the sadness pain of losing their member , n fishermen aswell since orcas have almost disappeared due to that cruelty, n there are some aquariums that let orcas back into the ocean now since it seems to be like they are thriving and growing in numbers its like they are in traumatic response and protecting themselves
Because they see the boats as enemies trying to kill and hurt other whales so now they are killing the boats in coordinated attacks. Smart mammals

Maybe they’re getting smarter and associating boats with the capture of members of their pods. Whales, like elephants, have intricate family structures. Man has caused them years of sorrow by tearing their families apart.
In the 70s i think itcwas , the robertson family sailing the globe was sunk by 3 orcas and spent 38 days adrift on a dinghy sfter their attacked yacht sank. Only thru having a few industrious thinkers and a helluva lot of luck on that dinghy did they survive... 38 days! Its a story that deserves to be more well known.

It's almost like animals need large swathes of territory in order to survive and it's almost like they need to protect that territory from any Intruders like a certain two-legged hairless ape

If I remember anything from watching the 1977 horror film “Orca,” it’s that killer whales always remember bad incidents involving members of their pod. Sometimes movies aren’t just simply pieces of fiction but actually mimic real life.
Gee…: I can’t imagine why a creature that is being decimated in the wild due to humans overfishing salmon, would want to defend their ocean from the species that’s single handedly destroying the planet….

This report should have mentioned the absolute global slaughter over centuries that humans have caused to whale populations with their boats. The whales are on to us!
I think they have learned to associate the boats with decimating fish populations which literally feeds them as well as a lot of the other things they eat.
Also this could pick up in southern waters..
Some of the tuna fishers bomb.. shoot at and try to kill them.. as they take bites of the tuna on the line.. they’re too smart to ignore being attacked..

These orcas ( one pod) are intilligent animals. They are not geniuses! They simply have enough intillect to know that boat hurt johnny- johnny now hurt boat! The most attractive part is the moving rudder... just like for a cat, it goes at the easily accessuble moving part! Its not assessing the structural integrity of a ship and deciding that its steering capability must be disabled. And for those suggesting such a thing, the orcas are still ramming the hulls. They are not waiting around trying to eat the occupants.

Orcas NOT killer whales. It is expected of journalists to at least have a very vague idea of the subject they talk about and use appropriate terms describing things. Same as NOT hippo but hippopotamus and NOT chim but chimpanzee.
Make sure your material including biology is consulted with someone who knows the subject if your jurnalists are incompetent enough not to know proper names of animals

Yes I agree with the first part. They just see these things consuming massive amounts of fish which are orcas main food source, but also a food source of the other things they eat. It could be as simple as they have learned to associate more boats with less food so boats = competition.
Put an electric charge on the bottom of boats. They'll learn real quick not to be doing that.

I actually think this is literally correct. Just commented that I believe they view the boats as competition for food. They perhaps connected the dots that these things are removing a LOT of the sea life from their waters.

I'm a long ways from the ocean, but round here we use what's called a cattle-prod for big critters. Just sayn.
