    I’m a firm believer in using gymnastic rings for the upper body. Some people are afraid of the instability of the rings but I say that’s the fun of it. Especially when you take into account that you’ll be using much more strength just to keep the rings stable.
    Plus people seeing you work out with rings, they’ll know immediately that you don’t joke around with your training. I live in a state where weight training is the most popular form of exercise especially with the Polynesian community. I know a couple of friends of mine who are big Samoan dudes (I’m Filipino by the way) who look like they’re related to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. They saw me working out with rings while they were pumping iron and they were super interested in trying them out.
    Long story short, those dudes who can powerlift an entire bus suddenly become “weaklings” with the gymnastic rings. In their own words, gymnastics style training is a completely different animal compared to powerlifting style of training.
    Edit: I am NOT talking down on powerlifting by saying this. In fact, I do like to lift iron for my upper body very occasionally. It’s just that the meat and potatoes of my upper body workouts largely consists of bodyweight and gymnastic style of training. Also those big friends of mine also do bodyweight training every now and then. It’s just that lifting weights is what appeals to them more and honestly, I see no problem with that... Except for the financial downfalls.

      Yes they are great tools to use and yes you can be big and strong but the rings can humble you. They work the muscles often neglected. With the bar ones you only focus on 2d movement but the rings can move in any direction and I think people don’t realise how much strength , stability and body awareness it takes to be good at it. I’ve ha da similar situation where a dude was doing 140kg bench for reps, saw me on the rings and thought it was easy, he had a shock and it was like his body was having an earthquake . He felt silly after .

      @@LeeDowningKeat Lmao that goes to show to never talk down on gymnastic-style bodyweight warriors. They almost never lift weights (except for special cases like doing a Maltese hold) and yet they’re jacked as hell and have more muscle definition than a dictionary.

      @@LeeDowningKeat I’ve thought about skills training from time to time. But I personally feel like I’m not quite ready for them.
      Edit: Although I am greatly inspired by gymnasts with their skills and most especially their physiques, I’m not seriously into wanting to learn what they actually do on a daily basis. But I am open to the idea of training for skills every now and then.

    I just thought I'd mention that sometimes people obsess on straps more than necessary. I bought a set of 12-foot lashing straps from Harbor Freight the other day ($4 for the pair). Then just used a Sharpie to mark the spots where I like the rings to sit for the exercises I commonly perform (push-ups, body rows, dips, support hold and inverted pull-ups). This might not be practical for beginners if they are adjusting the lengths over time as body strength increases, but I've admittedly plateaued and I'm okay with maintaining.

    I really love my pullups on the rings. It's way more comfortable for me and feels more natural, going from hands pronated to supinated in the pullups. Dips are harder on the rings in the beginning, but you feel how all the stabilizers and pushing muscles develop over time. Much more stability in the upper body. And of course I do both excercises on the bars, too. Reminds me that tomorrow's Pullup Dip day for me.

    • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  3 роки тому +1

      Agree with you there Adrian . That’s why the rings feel good like you said you have that natural rotation going on which is just easier in the joints . In the pull ups and dips it’s harder but the stabilisers get turned on more and get stronger so make you more stable and I would safer . Haha have a good day. How many of each

    I have a set of wooden and plastic rings. However, I prefer my plastic ones. They are:
    1. Cheaper
    2. More durable
    3. Will not blow like wooden ones when wet
    4. Feel better than wooden ones, in terms of grip, when wrapped in electrical tape

    Hey, Lee. I know that the unstable component of rings make excercises more difficult... But, I want to know:
    • What are the stabilizers being activated?
    • What would be the difference between 2 veteran trainers which one trained only with bars/stable conditions VS the other whom ONLY trained with rings?

    • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  Рік тому +1

      Hey buddy thanks for watching and your question . First one is depends on the exercises you are doing but you will find muscles you are trying to use and around the joints that are used will have to work harder. They have to contract harder to create stability. This is why typical you will do less when you switch to the rings because they are harder, and the weaker stabiliser muscles , their weakness is more apparent. Second question is it’s depends , if you focus one to be good on the bar the person doing the bar work would be better. My opinion is the work on the risk has the ability to test you more and therefore make you stronger . It’s tests you more. When I solidly did ring work when I went to the bar I did feel stronger, the extra strength I gained from the lack of stability in the rings I was able to use to perform better on the bar

    Is it just me or does it feel like the triceps are activated much less during ring dips vs bar dips.
    I always feel my chest working hard as heck during ring dips but my triceps just slightly get pumped.

    • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  3 роки тому +2

      No your not alone bro It's the same for me. I think it's because you can bring in the rings so you hit the chest harder so they do more of the work. Same as the ring push ups, its kind of a hybrid push up and fly in one so it really hits the chest hard

    • @jimxvx332
      @jimxvx332 3 роки тому +4

      This is probably because you're not turning out the rings at the end of each rep. If you do a full 'ring turn out' (RTO) where you twist the rings outwards & suppinate your palms as hard as you can as you straighten the arm, this will ensure you hit the triceps more (plus it also recruits the bicep). Doing this will increase the difficulty and effectiveness of any pushing exercise.

Definitely need to take a step backwards... • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  3 роки тому

      @@ThatBaldBrownDoctor my problem is I go through phases of what I enjoy to train and because I’ve been doing it for a long time I like to change just for mental change. I know I should dedicate time for both strength training and high rep work. If I spent time doing high reps and lots of volume I’m sure I could get it back up but the SAID principle ,if you want to get better at something you have to test it. Test your endurance and you will get better at it. Yes that’s a realistic goal you just have to work at it. Grease the groove is a fantastic way to improve numbers and maybe one of the best ways if you can do it. And just doing pull ups, maybe setting a target of how many you can do a day and with time try and get that number in as little sets as possible

    • @ThatBaldBrownDoctor
      @ThatBaldBrownDoctor 3 роки тому

      @@LeeDowningKeat Great.... thats a good strategy. The problem is that grease the grove does not work for me as im a medical student and spend most of my day in hospital. Doing pull ups in a hospital is the last thing patients want to see. I use EMOM (every min on the min) working very well for me.

    • @LeeDowningKeat
      @LeeDowningKeat  3 роки тому +1

      Yes that’s what I mean it works but not if you don’t have the time to do it. Yes EMOM would work too. Using inverted rows to add volume and strength to the pull muscles also will help

    • @bassemb
      @bassemb 3 роки тому

      There are a few difference between suspension trainers and rings, some pros, some cons
      - Suspension trainers usually have rotating handles, which can help with exercises such as bicep curls or tricep extensions
      - Suspension trainers usually have foot straps on their handles, which are more comfortable for slinging your feet inside for stuff like hanging mountain climers, pike pushups or various ab exercises. You can do same with rings but they are less comfortable with the hard surface of the ring
      - Suspension trainers aren't built to handle your entire bodyweight (especially the handles). You're meant to always have part of your body on the floor to take some of your weight. Rings and ring straps and clips are built to handle a fully body weight.
      - Suspension trainers aren't adjustable in the same way as rings (space them out further apart or closer together, place one ring higher than the other etc.)
      Overall the two pieces of gear are pretty similar, and ideally you would have both. Suspension trainers are more than enough for beginners like me and even offer advantages over rings, but once you get intermediate / advanced, there's no susbtitute for rings
