When first released the S1 w 24-105mm lens combo was way too big and heavy coming from Canon prosumer 6D 24-105mm f4 L and wanting G9 IBIS. So went M43 and loved it. With Canon releasing MILC too small for it’s lenses and lacking fxn buttons. I came back to S1 series. Finding adapted EF glass and now S 85mm prime the way to go keeping these feature rich photographer dream bodies nimble. I fear we wont see cameras like these again. I now have both S1 and S1r w no regrets and pine for more Panasonic S primes.
Hey Sulanto, thanks for the video! I'm a hybrid documentary shooter - I do a lot of portrait and event photo-stills but I also create a lot of video work. Do you think the S1R would be a good hybrid camera for me? Or would you tell me not to get excited about all the extra pixels in the S1R and go for the S1H? Because I have read that the S1R has pixel binning when shooting at 4k. But it also has only x1.09 crop on 4k.. and I like that
I think the S5 is a really good option, because it's so affordable and very capable. I think 24 Mp is enough for most photography, but of course more pixels are seldom a downside. Anyway, my choice of Lumix for hybrid work would be the S5.
Hello, dear Matti .. how are you? I always follow your you tube channel you are a really nice person and very helpful. Can you explain me a little thought I have? Let me explain better, today the battery grip for my fantastic S1 has arrived, but the primary ignition of the machine takes place only from the machine body and not from the battery grip ?
Hi! Such a nice discovery this video. It made my decision clear. I was wondering, as I’m a CaptureOne user cause I used to have a Canon6dMarkII, which software do you use for portraits in studio…
@@mattisulanto which software do you use for portraits in Studio? CaptureOne doesn’t support Panasonic unfortunately and I used to use as I had a Canon
Yes, of course, but once you get the basics dialed in, it's not that much extra. Make a preset or two and that's it. No RAW is 100% perfect straight from the camera anyway and I think that's the whole point of RAW, that you can fine tune your photos the way you like.
@@mattisulanto Unfortunately, the ICC profiles (ex. Flat, Natural, Standard, Vivid, etc.) found in camera are not yet present on C1. But there are in LR. Do you have any news about it?
@@bcomebilly I don't use C1 so unfortunately I can't help. The profiles in LR are made by Adobe or maybe Adobe has some collaboration with camera manufacturers. Maybe PhaseOne has no resources to do that, because it takes time and effort to make profiles for all cameras.

I'm thinking in My first full frame camera, the price in the s1 and s5 are near 1000 dollars... What do You think?
I have the S1R since it came out, doing photo and video. From fashion to landscape photography, I have more fun than my canons. It s how the camera feel for you .. i personally hate sony they feel cheap to me.. I got the S1R because it is very close to the LEICA SL2 as far as sensor and look. My only complain, is the promised v-log for the S1R they said they'd have at the begining, and never got it. But .. I use a ninja v and the footage is fantastic.. The autofocus WORKS! but dumb rumors follow... its been fixed and a lot quicker in continuous. But you 'll always have the know it all that will think it s still a problem blah blah blah.. Great camera to me serving my purpose. like I said i couldn t afford the like and peripherals.. so I switched to Lumix S serie
I have the S1R as well I love it BUT the auto focus is horrible with the sigma lenses .. at least the 35mm 1.4 and 100-400mm dg dn L mount version I have .especially with video . also do you have an idea when the 85 1.8 will be available for purchase ? trying to get one and everywhere have them for pre order .
Thanks. Yes, some Sigma lenses are unfortunately not great for video. I have no idea of the availability of the 85mm. I thought it's already available, but maybe not.
Dear Matty, Many thanks for your usual most informative videos. I am a S1R user and I am having difficulty finding out how you achieve a 1.5 APC crop in photographs, this will allow me to magnify the reach on my lens. Could you kindly think about using this topic on a future video. I would also hope that you can feature how to use the teleconverter option on both S1 series and also G9. Many thanks MJS Photo
Thank you! I don't think there is any user selectable APS-C mode. You can just crop in post and get the same result. I may cover the teleconverter in the future, but meanwhile take a look at the manual, S1R page 129 and G9 page 150 (English manual).
Hi Malcolm and Matti, APS-C is selectable, but it’s not straight forward: in menu “others(photo)1”, set EX. Tele Conv. to TELE CONV, which is super35mm/APS-C. Then, go to the picture size setting, now see that size M and S become exM and exS, remain on size L won’t activate APS-C, instead, choose exM size. One could assign the picture size switch to Q button, now switching between size L and exM represents the switching between FF and APS-C. If ExTeleConv. is off, picture size change won’t activate crop. Check the manual, there are more variations of crop ratio.
@@mujianxiuxi You can use the EX Tele Conv. option, but it's only for jpeg, the RAW file is still 47Mp even though it will show the jpeg crop. So, if you'd like to have smaller RAW file size, the Ex Tele Conv. is not a real option. If you shoot jpeg, then it may work for you.
I have this camera since it came to the market and I use it with Leica SL and M lenses. I like it and I completely subscribe to your review. However, I also use the Leica SL 2 and I prefer the colour rendition of the Leica in the raw files.
Thanks! Sure, those Leica colors are slightly different and a matter of taste, but fortunately RAW is malleable and relatively easy to adjust to taste.
It's not that this system is bad, but Canon, Nikon or Sony do similar things with better AF while being smaller and lighter with a better lens selection. Because of this, the depreciation is very high, so you may be able to get some nice deals on it, at least that's how I got the S1 but I think I am going sell it as I don't need extreme durabiliy. With more lenses, better AF and a smaller form factor like the S5 (but with the EVF quality of the S1 series), they will be on the right track.
@@insideoutshots4394 I'm not familiar with the latest Canon cameras, so I'm not 100% sure what you mean. However, on Lumix you have to press the AF mode button and choose the AF mode.
My S1R landed four days ago. I was shocked to discover it's heavier than my 5Ds. I've bought used, on eBay. I hae the 20-60 and 50mm for it, and an adaptor for Canon EF lenses is on the way. I intend to use it mostly with TS-E lenses. They don't do AF, so that's not a concern. It's not as like the G9 as I expected. I am glad to see the REC button is on the back, I agree with you about the power switch.
Since it can shoot 6k I would like to ask: if I shoot video /picture without zooming with 6k and crop later, is the quality same as those non-6k shoot with zoom in 100mm or 200mm?
@@mattisulanto let's say I have a camera with 4k, I zoom in 100mm to take 4k video. You have S1R taking 6k without zooming then later crop to 100mm. How will they compare in quality?
I'm really happy with my s1r works great with my old lenses and fantastic with a 28mm f2 distagon lens with a nikon to l mount adapter. Can't say anything about the auto focus as I don't use it even with my old nikon d610.
I want Panasonic to provide in-camera HDR mode instead of the useless HLG photo. It absolutely doesn’t make sense they didn’t provide HDR in S1R. Also, I want more megapixels. 47MP is NOT always enough for my landscape photography.
@@mattisulanto I often need to do heavy cropping in post production of my landscape photos. I know the trend for 2020 was 24 MP full frame cameras and I hope Panasonic doesn’t head that direction.
@@mattisulanto Good question. I’m a casual shooter. I might plan an epic shot or two throughout the year where I study the location compositionally, focal length, etc and return back for the good light. In that situation I avoid cropping in post. But the rest of my photography happen during road trips in the mountains where I shoot without planning and end up adjusting the composition in post. Of course I could improve on getting the composition right in camera but I’d hate not having flexibility in post when I need it.

My personal opinion: I think, Panasonic is smart/clever to have a second mainstay with MFT + FF. Unfortunately MFT sells not so much for years. It sinks down. Olympus has more or less give up. The market ist put on FF. But for me especially the Pana FF seems to big and heavyand the concentration only of contrast autofocus doesn't convince me, although I only had a Pana GX 8 formerly. I am absolut happy with this brand and the results are amazing. Before I always use Nikon and change one time to Lumix, and now I don't want miss my cameras. For sure Nikon is one of the leader on the camera market and there is no discusion obout the quality, but we are talking now about the Lumix and there is reason to hide behind other brands. It is everyone's photographer preference. I work also as a Press Photographer and there you get exactly this point of view out, if you see the different results from all photographers whats coming out. Also for the Sports-Photography there are the Lumix Cameras absoluty Competitive. It would be really a pleasure if you cold visit me onetime Austria and we can make some Phototrip together, we have amazing nature and very beautiful historical citys. With me you found a really big fan, thanks and all the best. Liebe Grüße Ronny
Thanks! I'd love to travel again, but as you know, right now it's a bit restricted😀 Maybe some day in the future. I've been to Vienna once and it was really beautiful.
@@mattisulanto thanks for your answer, I am very glad about it :-) yes maybe in the future, hopefully, you are always welcome
Thanks for sharing.
@@mattisulanto Mati, enjoy your UA-cam reviews and am a subscriber.
Sigma 14-24 is not impressive with AF, but maybe there are some recommendations on settings to improve it, it would be much appreciated..
Thanks for those kind words. I'm afraid I have to disappoint, because I have never used the battery grip and I'm not familiar with the settings.
@@mattisulanto Don't worry Matti dont't worry , you are welcome
Hi! Such a nice discovery this video. It made my decision clear.
I was wondering, as I’m a CaptureOne user cause I used to have a Canon6dMarkII, which software do you use for portraits in studio…
Thanks.
@@mattisulanto which software do you use for portraits in Studio? CaptureOne doesn’t support Panasonic unfortunately and I used to use as I had a Canon
I did not realize it was an actual question. I use Lightroom for everything, but also DxO Photolab is good.
@@mattisulanto do you use it in tether mode as CaptureOne allows to see the real time image while shooting and do the adjustments you need?
Thanks for these fast answers🙏
That is of course true, but it requires more work in LR, or C1 which is my preferred application.
I think $1000 for any FF camera is good.
Thanks for sharing.
I am surely gonna get that new 70 to 300 MM Lumix lens in a few months when it`s available.
Yes, it looks really nice.
Dear Matty,
Many thanks for your usual most informative videos.
Many thanks
MJS Photo
I think Sony nailed the card slot problem. Two card slots, each accepting either Cfast or SD card.
Yes, that's the way to do it.
Thanks.
is there a way to have dul focusing Methods? if so how? there is only one af button on the back
What is dul?
@@mattisulanto like having one for one point af and another for eye af and to switch between the two af modes like what they have on the canon cameras

I’m not quite sure what you mean. However, for example, if you crop to 4k it looks like you filmed 4k.
@@mattisulanto let's say I have a camera with 4k, I zoom in 100mm to take 4k video.

I don't know if I should purchase this, or the S5.
Great video anyway :)
I want Panasonic to provide in-camera HDR mode instead of the useless HLG photo. It absolutely doesn’t make sense they didn’t provide HDR in S1R. Also, I want more megapixels. 47MP is NOT always enough for my landscape photography.
Thanks! What do you use your pictures for, if the pixels are not enough?😀
@@mattisulanto I often need to do heavy cropping in post production of my landscape photos. I know the trend for 2020 was 24 MP full frame cameras and I hope Panasonic doesn’t head that direction.
@@aviatorman8 That explains it. May I ask why you need to do heavy cropping?
@@mattisulanto Good question. I’m a casual shooter. I might plan an epic shot or two throughout the year where I study the location compositionally, focal length, etc and return back for the good light. In that situation I avoid cropping in post. But the rest of my photography happen during road trips in the mountains where I shoot without planning and end up adjusting the composition in post. Of course I could improve on getting the composition right in camera but I’d hate not having flexibility in post when I need it.
@@mattisulanto I also have one lens that is the kit lens which combined with 47 MP has worked well in most situations.
Now that you are a Sony user you should make a video comaparing the S1R to the Sony A7IV.
I don’t have the S1R any more. Comparisons can be interesting, but fanboys always get too upset, if their favorite is not the best😀
Agree on all. The switch is ....well, I forget to switch off very often. And autofocus is not an issue as I mostly shoot landscape

@@mattisulanto I have 4 batteries, and experienced that on most, and one replaced by Panasonic, and still have issues. It is not every time, so kind of weird issue. Do you think that this will replace their micro four/thirds? I really enjoy my G9 and excellent quality of pictures.
I don't know what will happen, but my opinion is, that MFT is not going to disappear quite yet.
So many rumors right now but rumors say 3 versions if GH6. Hybrid, photo, and video centric m43 bodies
@@mannypvd2296 Rumors are rumors😀 Let's hope we'll soon see the real GH6.
My personal opinion:
I think, Panasonic is smart/clever to have a second mainstay with MFT + FF.
In some videos I have seen, that Panasonic users do have problems with pumping autofocus. Could be or not - therefore it were smarter to choose another one for example Sony or Canon if you like FF.
But: I don't have the money to invest in a second system next to my MFT.
Nevertheless it is an interesting video of you👍
Thank you.
