That last shot is spectacular. The long exposure helps with the depth of field to keep the focal point on the branch. Well done!
Here we are in spring but I never tire at looking at bright Autumnal colours. I especially liked the last picture. Thanks for taking us on your journey through Autumnal Scotland.
Remember film is cheap. So shoot shoot and shoot. You are doing a great job perfecting your craft! Nicely done!
Thank you Vincent :)
Thank you for sharing the beautiful woodland in the Fall. Another version of the serenity you find in nature.
Beautiful photos. Your shutter speed on the water worked perfectly, especially in the first shot.
The over hanging branches turned out very nice. Good for you on taking a chance and trusting your creativity.
Yes Kim this video was much better than the last one. The compositions were better and the pictures looked sharp compared to the last video. The last video was a windy day though. Nice work though on the finni as we used to call it. I was never there at autum though. Nice colour starting to pop. Best time of year for sure.
great images Kim ,well done , your doing a great job , nice to view on a Sunday morning , roll on the next video
Beautiful photos as usual Kim. i love Autumn. Heavy rains and strong winds knocked most of the Autumn colored leaves down in central
Yeah we have very little left here now too. Thankfully this video was filmed early on in October before the storms hit.
Thanks Kim. Super video. I loved that final square crop 👌
Good Sunday morning Kim Grant enjoyed your video as always the color in the tree by the river is so beautiful awesome image ...
Beautiful shots all round, the last leafy square crop in particular!
Lovely shots Kim. Looking forward to the next vid also. 👍
Oh Kim, these are gorgeous images! Well done!
Thank you Karen :)
Watching this with my morning cuppa and laughing at the gimpy run at the beginning, summarised my whole personality in one clip! 😂loved the images, amazing to see the different takes on scenes that two photographers can achieve. Looking forward to the next vid! ❤️
Beautiful photos as usual Kim. i love Autumn. Heavy rains and strong winds knocked most of the Autumn colored leaves down in central Pennsylvania. I did manage to photograph the Autumn time, Sorry for the double post,, dumb computer. Always enjoy watching your videos. Take care and be safe. The virus is bad over here again. Two of my family have it. I keeping to myself. Bless You...
i
Great pictures and video Kim, we usually see you at the sea but now nature has something beautiful with those autumn colors
Thank you Dirk - always nice to try different locations :)
Nice video and great photos Kim. 👌👌
Just recently found your channel, inspiring springs to mind. You're like Brian Cox, everything explained in laymen's terms. Look forward to next vid. Keep up the excellent work
Thank you very much Mike and welcome to the journey 😊
Lovely photographs Kim, I would have been happy to get results like that. Looking forward very much to the next instalment. Take care and be safe out there. All the best, Graham👍📷♥️
Thank you Graham :)
That last one was particularly good with an interesting background to the focus on the patterns of the leaves.
7:07 wow. 10:16 Success Kim. ❤️ For your photos.
An excellent video 😊 from Kim,
thanks very very much, keep safe.
The colours and images from this video are absolutely beautiful. My favourite image was the one at 7:03 such a beautiful shot. Thanks for sharing Kim. Take care and stay safe. ❤️
You got some cracking shots there Kim
Thank you Andy :)
Beautiful autumn colours this year
It has been a great season!
Kim
In 2013 I toured New England states( Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine) for fall foliage I got pictures of lots of changing colors and covered bridges. Your photo shoot so reminded of that trip. There are so many photo opportunities it's hard to decide what to photograph.
Lovely to hear I reminded you of a lovely past trip :)
Great shots of the River and Autumn leaves. Fred in Texas
Great work. Watched a few of your video. Like how you have so much passion for photography. Great shots thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much Dave :)
@@kimgrantphotography your very welcome. Keep up the great work and keep these videos coming. They are very inspiring. Stay safe 👍👍👍
That's a crackin good shot of the rapids. Stunning. Consider a shower cap (the cheap kind) for covering your camera in the rain. Works great. And lightweight. Someone else mentioned the 1:1 ratio in the image shooting menu, I checked my Z6 and it is there. I am running firmware 3.10. Happy shooting!!
Gorgeous Scottish Autumnal colours. Cheering up a dreary morning in lockdown Wales. Thanks Kim
Very nice Kim lovely time of the year 👍
Hi Kim, When I am shooting in bad weather I use a plastic shower cap to cover the camera and lens. Works well and it's cheap.
Thanks Jack - have used one in the past. Sadly I left it at home on this day.
Gorgeous photographs , stunning colours I love this time of year thank you for sharing
A cracking video some lovely images. Really like the one at about 07:14. Thanks
Brilliant river images with the autumn colours on the leaves.
I think that if you see a potential image you should take it and if you are not happy with it on your computer screen then you haven't lost anything, it's better to try than not.
Very good advice Tim - thank you :)
Love the long exposures with the gorge and leaves. 90% of our leaves are now on the ground in my part of Canada, but I put together two lovely videos. Finally I caught the peak! (Still chuckling about your glove cam)
Excellent vid with some excellent photos. You could carry a clear shower cap &, a small micro fiber hand towel (the kind they sell in auto parts stores) to cover & keep dry your camera equipment. It is also good when your waiting for nightscape photos to keep the condensation off of your equipment. Stay safe.
Great point about out not walking past a scene that catches your eye. I to have been terribly guilty of regretting passing up a shot, and am trying to correct that mind set.
Great video. Love the images and how you tried a new form of your photography.
Thank you Conor - a bit different from my seascapes ;)
Nice vlog! And very nice photos for someone who doesn't do this that often. Even for someone who would do it more often. Keep it up!
Thank you Peter :)
Kim, I believe you're shooting with your z camera. In the menu settings you can choose regular, AP-C, 4x5, 1x1 and 16x9 aspect ratios. I never had this flexibility on previous cameras and it is something that I have found can really bring out ones creativity to get it right in camera. All of a sudden, I'm shooting and enjoying 1x1 photos. Some stunning photos you made here. Good luck. Jim
Thank you Jim. Sadly I couldn't find this on the day and google didn't help much but a few people have told me how to find this setting now so all good :)
The square image at 10:32 is really beautiful. I can't change aspect ratio either but I have got better at visualising square crops recently. Thanks for the video.
Super Awesome! This could be a big seller! 11:32
Particularly liked your last image.
Watching your videos for the last couple of years.....it struck me today how watching you has been like watching a child grow up.... touching things, growing in knowledge, getting braver.... rather good stuff Kim. NOW I have a question.... when you mentioned your camera limitations.... I would have thought the Z6 could do a square crop!! For sure be on the lookout for a firmware update!
Thank you for the kind words Dave. With regards to the square crop - apparently I can change it. I just failed to find it on the day *embarrassed face*
Kim - i had a thought about your aspect ratio dilemma. You could use a piece of cardboard or paper, make a cutout to the ratio you want and size it to the screen on the camera. You can put the paper on the back and compose. If you cut the overall size to match the screen, put the cutout in the middle. Just a thought....
I enjoyed the colours and the movement in the water Kim, especially the final image.
I have read the comments below about your intention to not pass by possible images.
There is a fine line to be drawn between the "it doesn't cost more to shoot more images" mindset and the ability to "see" a composition. While I would never suggest passing by a possible composition, it is a question of degree, I have a friend who comes back from half a day's photo trip with hundreds of images. You have seemed to me Kim to have a natural ability to see the composition.
The use of a tripod encourages slowing down and considering what you are taking: with water of course, several exposures at different shutter speeds are advisable so that a choice can be made later as to which is the best effect.
It's all about balance I guess. Taking shots you think will work well but trying not to over shoot. Slowing down and enjoying nature is what it's all about.
There must not have been any wind. The last picture was very sharp with a thin branch with leaves in the foreground and the water beneath the branch had good motion blur. You picked a good spot for fall photography.
Very fortunate not to have any wind that morning. Was calm and beautiful
Hi Kim. Beautiful Photographs and a really nice location. (which I think is Randolphs Leap?) :-)
That's correct Peter - great spot.
The great thing about digital photography is that it doesn't cost more to take more photos... Snap away! You got some wonderful shots! I was going going to suggest a lens hood while shooting in the rain, but your filter system wouldn't allow it. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!
Look at the Choose Image Area in the Photo Shooting Menu for a Square crop.
Thank you David :)
Hi Kim I have to say for someone who is by your own admission new to this type of photography you got some really beautiful/stunning images great work I will look forward to the next instalment but until then take care and stay safe.
That's very kind Clive - thank you :)
Great advice, I myself have been guilty of driving or walking past potential images and having regret that I did not grab a shot , I just need to slow myself down and focus what I have in front of me and not what I could have
All the best with slowing down Jeff - it's great what you can achieve :)
Hi Kim , i really find woodland difficult , you got some lovely autumnal images here , i recently shot an image in a square crop on my 5Dmkiii , thinking i could change my mind in post if i wanted, turns out you cant. I actually did not like the 1:1 crop on the image and wanted more a 4:5 but i was stuck with the 1:1 . Its a lesson i learned that while its nice tool to have in camera to frame up the image maybe but in hindsight i was shoot natively to give me more options in post.
I too fall guilty of giving up on potential image opportunities. I guess it would be a good exercise on challenging oneself tosses the scene and find a shot within it.
A challenge is always a good thing - all the best with it :)
a cheap shower cap ,you know the see through things you used to get in hotels ,lol ,handy for covering your camera lens in the rain, have used them myself on occasion.
I usually have one in my bag but left it at home on this occasion. Thanks for the tip Mike
If there is on photo hacker tip to pass on from someone who has dealt with unpredictable climate photography, it is to always pack a plastic shopping bag or bread bag or two in your camera pack, for many reasons, but mostly for "wet" shots.
covering your camera and cutting a whole for your lens front to peek out has saved me many times.
I thought of this forty years ago as a teen when shooting a rugby game when it started to lightly rain. The best photo I got earned it to get published the next morning in the local sports front page. All thanks to a plastic bread sack I had put over my Nikon FE and 135mm lens
Another great vlog. Cracking images too. I’m surprised than the Z series doesn’t have the aspect ratio option as my D85O has it . I thought Nikon would have continued with that option . 👍🏻 Dave - Brisbane 🇦🇺
Apparently it does and I just couldn't find it *embarrassed face*. All sorted now :)
Round about the same time you were enjoying the autumnal riot of colour I had the pleasure of enforced isolation through Track and Trace. This focused the mind and I had to get all creative with my limited view on the world so I filmed an episode of autumn unfolding in my garden.
Now that we are all in Lockdown for a month maybe you could do something similar to inspire and stop us all going stir crazy?
Another stunning video, lovely to watch. My I ask, can you add which filter you are using on the photo you shot. Like, PL +ND 64. Look forward to your next well edited video. It's really relaxing to watch your style of creativity. That also goes for PM.
Thanks Roy - I will think about this or get better at talking about it between shots. I only used a polariser in this video :)
On my Z6 I go to Photo Shooting Menu>Choose Image Area and I have the choice of FX, DX, 1:1 ans 16:9. Pges 106 and 119 of the User Manual. I hope this helps.
I have that set into my info menu for speed of access. :)
@@carlb401 Still getting to grips with my Z6 so pleased to help, I look forward to your vlogs. I live in East Lothian.
Thank you Keith! Wasn't able to find it on the day and a google search didn't help either but you have :)
@@kimgrantphotography You're welcome Kim. I recently got a Z6 and I know how complicated it can be in setting it up to one's liking.
Cheers
Keith
Shower cap 👍
Henry Turner had an inexpensive solution to your problem, rain cover for your camera in his last video (or 2). I commend you for being out there in the rain. Great images.
Thanks Patrick - I have looked at those rain covers in the past. May need to invest in one for the future
The Z6 and Z7 are able to shoot in different images sizes. Look for Image Area in de settings. See here for more info: onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z7_z6/en/09_menu_guide_03_04.html You can even customize My Menu and add often used features in there. That is what I do.
I am new into photography, so my question is when you find a subject/ image, do you take several pictures and change your settings say in manual mode or any of the other modes? and pick out your favorite later while editing?
No I set my camera to the settings I want to shoot at and take one image. I will take more if shooting a moving object such as crashing waves so I have a choice of action shots. Sometimes I will also shoot the same scene using filters and take one image with and one without so I can choose my favourite. 90% of the time it's choose the settings and take one shot though 😊
So fortunate you didn't have wind conditions so you could make those long exposures of the leaves. The last shot is a stunner for sure, Kim. However, please give me less of you walking. I've been walking quite well for 78 yrs and don't need any coaching on that. Love your presentation of the scene and your thoughts about composition.
Thanks for the kind words regarding the photos Larry. The walking shots are all to showcase the scene and tell a story of me moving from location to location. I often get comments saying "less talking, more film clips". Trying to get a good balance :)
lovely images and colours, especially with the background of the burn / river blurred in the background.
Other than the polariser, what filters were you using to allow a 30 second exposure in the 1st couple of images?
Thank you for the kind words. It was before sunrise when I shot these photos so the light was pretty dull in the gorge. I therefore didn't need any other filters (the light allowed me to create the long exposure effect naturally) :)
Thanks, my bad, I assumed there were filters on but must have just been the holder.
I too walk away from potential shots. They are missed opportunities. I vow to improve. Thanks
All the best with it Steve :)
As to your point to stop passing by potential compositions - good decision - "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" (quote from Wayne Gretzky)
My Canon T6 (1300) allow me to set view in live mode to 1:1, but the is just the view, the RAW image is 2:3
It's not only Nikon, with my Sony camera I can only choose 3:2 or 16:9.
Apparently I can choose my aspect ratio...I just couldn't find it on the day *embarrassed face*
Bring some shower caps next time. Or better: put some in your backpack... ;-)
Really? You can’t choose Square aspect ratio with the Z6? You can with the Z7 because I’ve done it before for portraits.
You can choose a 1:1 or 16:9 crop with the Z6. Only difference from Z7 I believe is that the Z6 doesn’t have the 5:4 option. You need to make sure the crops are selectable though the custom settings.
