Kim, love watching your videos. What you have described in this video is what I call the “modern day dilemma “ ! Digital cameras have made it more difficult to capture unique photos of iconic locations. Everyone now carries some form of camera with them, the only difference now to getting that unique shot is being at a location at “the right time”. Each iconic location has had millions of shots taken there .... but the upside of the modern day dilemma is that because we don’t use film any more, there is no cost involved in capturing images 😃. This means, as you have pointed out, you can now wander around taking photos of “other” things. You can experiment with different types of subjects to satisfy your creativity. The digital era now gives you instant feedback and doesn’t cost you any extra financially. You have freedom to explore many other possibilities 😃. Cheers. Derek. Sydney.
Being a crusty old bugger, I still can't qualify phone pictures as "real" photography. Not all pictures should have EVERYTHING in focus.. give me bokeh!!!! Give me different lenses to make the picture look special. I miss shooting Tri-X at 1600ASA and seeing the killer grain it made, but for sure I am so glad to be able to go out and take 250 pictures in a day with no thought to cost. I WOULD like an 80mp sensor though..... : )
@@extremelydave you crusty old bugger😉. I’m a member of that club as well! But 80 Mp .... you’ll need a caddy to carry your lenses not to mention winning the lottery to upgrade your computer 😱
@@echotube2000 That's what the hired help is for! Carry around the beast!!! With 80 mp you can crop in on whatever you like and it will still look awesome full screen or printed......
Thank you very much. Yes - it certainly is more difficult it get unique images nowadays but that's all part of the challenge I think. Photography is about personal enjoyment so if you enjoy the images you take, that's all that matters. Life is full of pros and cons 🙂 This would make a great debate topic!
What makes a great photographer? It's not experience alone, it's for sure not equipment ( but it does help) .... it's vision and passion and you have that in busloads Kim. To hear you speak about your ideas and passion for doing your own unique view of locations to shoot makes me think you have your head firmly where it needs to be. I WILL be one who says "I knew Kim when she first hit the scene...." Stay safe, happy and passionate!!! : )
What a kind comment. Thank you very much Dave. I have certainly seen a shift in my creative mindset this year and my photography has definitely improved because of it ☺️
I have enjoyed watching your journey as you develop from taking photographs to being an artist and will continue to follow your journey. I think the need to take the "iconic" shots is just part our our learning and development and looking for and wanting to create images that speak to you is really artistic aspect of photography. Many, nay most, aspiring photographers never make the corner to being an artist and that is fine as well. I look forward to following your journey long into the future. One of my favourite things is to produce an image people would not normally see, in a way they would not otherwise have seen it. The joy of photography is more than just the image. It also encompasses me seeing the world in a new and wonderful way.
I think the best and most satisfying photographs are the ones that speak to you rather than taking an iconic shot just for the sake of it.
Very true Daryl.
Hi Kim.,
What a stunning location.
As you say, get the iconic images to satisfy yourself and then look for other potential images that other people just disregard.
Awesome images in such a great location which really shows it justice.
Kim i enjoyed watching your new video, your voice brings peace on this lockdown sunday morning. Beautiful images from nature and waterfall. You encouraged me taking my camera today and driving to the coast to take some waterbirds pictures.
That's lovely to hear Dirk. I hope your trip to the coast was enjoyable 🙂
Another beautiful, amazing video and photos, Kim. Well done. Thanks for all you do.
Thank you - really glad that you enjoyed it 🙂
That bridge is spectacular.
What a beautiful location and some awesome photographs! I agree with you that the main attraction isn't always the best subject. Thanks for sharing Kim.
I'm extremely envious of the so many photographic opportunities you have in Scotland.
It certainly is a beautiful country 🙂
I'm Australian, but of Scottish descent, I'm a Campbell and my mum is a McDonald. Found you and now I'm feeding my curiosity for my country of descent. Love to come over once Covid lets us with my camera of course. Love the accent lol.
Wow Kim. Cracking Photographs in a stunning location. :-)
Thanks for this vlog Kim this makes staying in for awhile worthwhile. You must enjoy travelling by car a lot.
I enjoy a good drive from time to time but also enjoy shooting close to home too. Great to have a mix ☺️
Great video and pictures well done Kim thanks for sharing cheers
Hello Kim, great video as always. Lots to think about to try and get my unique photographs. Continue to give inspiration. Thanks for sharing and continue to stay safe 😷
Hey Kim,
Just started watching your video after hearing about your work from another UA-camr I watch.. I really enjoyed and connected with your comments about finding that unique shot... It's something I try and do myself because you are right seeing the same shot after shot while nice can get boring.
Thank you Philip and welcome to the journey 🙂
Splendid video Kim, 👌👌
Thank you Kim your photo's were amazing they certainly had the WOW factor , I live in the central part of Scotland but don't drive , I retired ln October and loving the fact I can get our more. You are very inspiring loving your locations
Inspiring for sure! So many beautiful images in this video, well done!
Simply wonderful as always! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Kim, beautiful pictures.
NIce location. I enjoyed the music you used for this one.
Another awesome morning. Having seasons is a gift. I was wondering how you managed on the swinging bridge, but the shots worked well! Awesome.
Kim, I just discovered your channel and have watched a few of your vlogs. I really admire your approach to photography and the images you make. I look forward to watching some of your earlier videos. Please keep making these inspiring videos!
Great video, Kim!
I think this video is really “iconic” well done
WOW, Kim, these images are incredibly beautiful!! The shot you got of the overhanging tree in the beginning, I think, is spectacular! Autumn here in Texas USA is pretty much past peak, but you HAVE inspired me to get out and search for the color and compositions that are left!!
All the best with the search Gary 🙂
Lovely images
Hi Kim. My wife and I have had two visits to Scotland cancelled this year because of Covid-19, so we've had to rearrange for next year. AGAIN!
We were so looking forward to our first ever visit to what looks to be an absolutely beautiful part of the country and you've portrayed it so well over the last few months. So thank you for that.
We're now paying a visit in April and again in May or June and can't wait. I think these falls etc, are definitely going to be added to our list.
Thank you for the wonderful job you're doing, you made our decision to visit Scotland so much easier.
Take care and stay safe...😊👍
Sad to hear your trips this year have been cancelled but gives you something to look forward to next year (3rd time lucky). I'm sure you'll love Rogie Falls 🙂
Hi Kim oh my what a stunning place from my point of view it's a painter's paradise, your images were just awesome and after watching this it was a case of oh my God Clive you need to get out more. Until next time take care and stay safe.
Beautiful location and great tips and insights, Kim!
Just discovered this channel love the way you look for different images friendly presentation style going to have to view some more thank you
It's nice to witness your growth as an artist🙂.
Kim i took up landscape photography and living in Kinlochleven near Glencoe taking iconic i have got tired of as well. Loch leven and loch linnie are great locatios as you say its catching the light Bonnie Lass
A great video Kim Grant beautiful images and have a beautiful day ...
Amazing images Kim your so lucky to have such amazing places to go and photograph that are relatively close to where you live I normally go to Scotland at least twice a year and I'm really missing it this year, it's such a beutiful place. 📸👍
Thank you Niel. A real shame you weren't able to come up this year but hopefully next year everything will return to normal. We're very lucky up here not to be in lockdown like the rest of the country too.
stunning images again Kim,thank you just keep them coming Kim ,great work as all ways ,take care and stay safe
Another beautiful video Kim. Lovely shots, the last one got a Wow factor 👌. That's for you talk as well.
Great video Kim, just love the autumn colours, and the waterfall. So much to photograph, spoilt for choice at that location.
Certainly was Mike - it's a lovely spot.
Loved watching this vlog Kim, beautiful. The images are stunning, the colour in the trees and even the sandy brown colour in the water as well. Going to make a cup of tea and watch it again. Take care and stay safe 💜
Thanks Martin. Glad you enjoyed the video once again 🙂
If i had to pick ill pick the vertical shot of the waterfall at 6:58 in the video !!!!!!! stunning shot !!stay safe n GOD BLESS !!
Some lovely pictures there and interesting observations about photographing iconic places. I like to do this for several reasons, whatever picture I take is mine and I got it by engaging with the place so I own it in a different way than looking at someone elses version. I also like to get a different take on a place (like your red tree picture) and finally it is quite a good learning experience to emulate a classic picture. I only take pictures for myself and enjoy finding my own locations but I can see that if your pictures are your livelihood you need to keep finding original subjects. Keep posting and stay safe. PS I wonder how your image stabilisation handled the moving bridge!
Thank you Keith. It's always good to take images for yourself and enjoy a mix of subjects too. Great mindset to have 🙂
Amazing
Loved the colors!!! Any post processing enhancements?
Thank you. Excellent video
Another wonderful vlog Kim, I was up in the highlands the week after this on October 18th week and it rained all week but the waterfalls were amazing. We went to the falls of Falloch and Inversnaid falls and Glencoe Lochan and the pictures we got were amazing but we didn't know about Rogie falls, but now we know where to visit next time we're in Scotland thanks to this video. 😘👍
Sounds like you had a great time Graham. Enjoy Rogie Falls when you're next able to visit 🙂
I think that's spot on Kim. It should be personal and you should express yourself in the photographs you are taking. We're all different and all see different things. How much better to look at things with different eyes.
I love this place Kim I last had the chance to visit here in 2018 and we saw the salmon leaping ; ) Thanks for sharing your trip and photos Take care : D Teddy
That's lovely to hear Teddy. It's always a joy to watch the salmon leap 🙂
What a great location Kim. I've just found it on the map, and see that it's on the main road to Ullapool and Lewis that we will be taking next September, so it's another one for a stop off on the way.
Sure is Neil! Enjoy when the time comes 🙂
Lovely Kim, I was lucky enough to shoot here in October a few years ago and I’ve wanted to revisit it ever since, you nailed it 👏
Thanks Daniel - it's ace in October 🙂
If you dont mind me asking, how do you calculate your exposure? Do you bracket? The 40mm shot at 30 seconds was dead on and especially with all the shadows. Good Job!
Ooh, I stopped there back in February on my way to a workshop on Skye, didn't have long, and my shots weren't amazing as the light was so harsh, casting strong shadows but I did manage to get a nice shot from the suspension bridge, literally clicked the shutter and held my breath to stop the bridge swinging! 😂
😂 sounds like a real challenge. It's a great location of the light is right but it can be very harsh during the day too. Great you took the time to visit and experiment though. Sounds like fun on the bridge!
@@kimgrantphotography it was a great few days, would love to go back!
Visited Rogie falls several times but always in summer when its just very green. I must go back next autumn.
Totally agree about the iconic shots - the best angles were discovered years ago.
BTW I love hearing you pronounce Moray as it should be - I hate hearing newreaders pronounce it Maw-ray or Moe-ray...!
Was brought up in Moray so that makes it easier. Can understand why so many mispronounce it though (easily done) 😅 hope you make it back in the autumn sometime 🙂
Lovely. I was there over a year ago slightly later in the morning. Not good on the bridge. Dog walkers and walkers.
It can get very busy during the day. A real gem of a place before all the people arrive though 🙂
Hello Kim, nice images. You are lucky, here in the New England we lost all leaves 2 weeks ago ...
One more question, do you have another lens for the Nikon, or all images are done with the 24-70/4 s ????
Currently all my images are taken on the 24-70mm. I do also own the 14-24mm but mostly use it for interior shots or astro
@@kimgrantphotography
Thank you for your response. Kim, just got the Z6ii with 24-70/4.
The combo deal was just irresistible. Today is holiday here, but I am going to take it out. We will see ...
go for it Kim . gairloch i lived there for a spell summer isles ullapool all over you lucky lucky sod 😁😁😁😁loch maree rogie falls the wire bridge 😊😊😊 my rest point
It certainly is a stunning area 🙂
Yup Kim. Not happy with the iconic shots anymore. That means you are now an official photographer. A tortured artist. You are going to look for more detail and depth. Your work will start to take on a different meaning. Some ima6you take you will love but not real be popular. Those are your images. Those you will cherish forever. I think I have a handful of those in 30 years. But I wouldn't trade them away. Love your work. Keep shooting and showing. Now the growing starts.
Thank you Simon and a very true statement.
I think you are taking about 'making' photographs rather than just 'taking' photographs
You have shown some stunning work in this video. Enjoyed them greatly. As usual, I did not enjoy the back and forth movement of your selfie stick. Nausea inducing, and couldn’t really see what you were pointing out. Please use the voice-over technique so we get to see those great shots for a longer time. Don’t really want to listen to long narratives while you speak into the camera.
Glad you enjoyed the photos Edward. My channel is more a vlogging channel than a film/cinematic channel. For me talking through my thoughts is what my channel is all about and reacting in time to what's going on. I do experiment with cinematic film and voice over from time to time but much prefer vlogging. Sorry if this isn't your chosen style of video.
@@kimgrantphotography We should all do what our inner self requires. I wish you well. As I said, I thought your photos were great.
You want different? you shoot the obvious, nothing original. Perhaps looking at photographers work would help, Ansel Adams wrote the book kid. The bridge was interesting, the colours were interesting, you stood right in the middle of the bridge, sadly you didn't impress on this occasion. Enough said, very poor for someone who runs workshops. Keep trying.
I'm glad Kim ignored your very rude comment. As for the "rookie" comment shooting from the middle of the bridge. Upwards of a MILLION people a year stand on the overlook where I made this 5 image pano, however the snowy conditions in this image were gone in a matter of hours. It's NOT "where" one stands that makes a good photo--and good photographers know it. :)
photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-nR65kNL/0/4fc8f103/XL/i-nR65kNL-XL.jpg
@@FloridaPete1948 Stand where you like, if the composition is right for you. Not being rude, either you say you are different, then be different. Or as you say be one of the million. thx for agreement.
You and I are not in agreement because I believe your comment to have been rude. Many great images are made by good photographers standing in the same spot at a good location.
This is another location 100's of thousands visit, but NONE on the windy, freezing cold late Sept. dawn when I made this 7 image pano. It's not the location that matters, it's what one accomplishes when there. photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-5sfTd5s/0/d0b8aaf5/X2/i-5sfTd5s-X2.jpg
@@FloridaPete1948 Hat's off to you getting that image from the bridge, you are a genius. Did you use a long telephoto lens. Seriously, a beautiful panorama. I will amend my comment as it is clearly upsetting you. ;)
@@derekgillan7314 I don't object your criticism per se. I just think that sort of criticism should be made "privately". :)
It would be nice of you to amend your remarks :)
Kim has a point about getting something different from popular locations--and I do that. I spend a lot of time hiking and climbing in the park to get shots that maybe aren't "unique", but pretty rare. Not easy at age 72! The weather and sun conditions make the panos close to unique because those conditions very rarely obtain, AND someone is there to make the photo. :)
Cheers

Both panos are from Glacier National Park near my home in Montana.
As for my panos, the snowy mountain scene, it was made from an observation deck for "tourists".

I never go to where the herds go , I try and go places where there are no paths or public footpaths ,luckily for me I live around 30 miles from this location. I've never been at this location and I wont be going either . Sorry Kim I'm not knocking your vlog . There are too many stunning locations around this area have been DESTROYED by the bloody NC500
