I'm a 65 year old grandpa making home family videos for my grandchildren and your a great help. Some of the other videos I've watched 😂 I'm lost after 10 seconds. THANKS for making it easy...
The third way, without drawing any volume curves, or adding cut points, is to use side chain compression to duck the music by a specific dB when the VO plays. Kind of like a DJ would set up his mic compressor to duck the track he's playing when he speaks into the mic.
I use side chaining in essentially everything I edit. I can use a Fairlight Preset to pre build the tracks VO, MUSIC, SFX with a few groups and some sub mixes, with the side chaining listening to the VO by default. Then I can edit and have dialogue appear anywhere and never touch a keyframe until the end of the mastering pass to dial things in perfectly.
Yes, audio ducking using the Fairlight capabilities is not only easier, it's a LOT more amenable to making edits after you've added the background music.
Thank you Casey for your great content. You are my go to for learning and refreshing my Davinci needs. Just searched this exact topic yesterday. You read my mind...
Since switching to Resolve, the only thing I really miss from Premiere Pro is the possibility to extend a song endlessly with just a click with the audio remix feature. Maybe there's a better solution, but now in Resolve if I want to have a background song throughout an entire video, the only option is copy/paste the track and manually crossfade in between.
Point to the area on the doll where Jazz hurt you, Casey. Seriously though, cut + crossfade just blew my mind. I always dread using keyframes on my music tracks.
Why didn't you use the side channel method, aka link the 2 compressors of the two audio tracks? 1. Set the compressor output of the voiceover to send it's signal 2. Set the compressor of the music channel to listen to the voiceover track. This way the whole thing is automatic and it is 5 five clicks. You can play with the attack, hold how fast the music should be louder after voiceover. Play with threshold to set volume of the music.
Remember for internet platform to check your mix on different sound devices, not everybody have studio monitor, many people are listening on a phone or with cheap earphones..
I love this video. The equilibrium change was a massive one for me. But I even learned quite a lot outside of sound. Pasting attributes, Alt + \ (omg thank you), right-clicking where two clips meet to add fades (after seeing you do it I was like - DUH Of course you'd be able to do that - to myself). :] Thank you so much for this!
Casey: 1.) Why don't people use (Display Individual audio channels) so the know if they are working with a mono stereo or in my case a 5.1 Surround sound track. Question 2.) when jumping between timelines in the same PROJECT why don't the (DisplayED Individual audio channels) remain individual channels but return to look like MONO tracks.
Thx for this, always learning new things from you! Any methods on how to choose the RIGHT music? I know it's subjective but would love to know how others are thinking about this
Thank you the tutorial. I am newbie to Da Vinci Resolve but have been using Premier pro for over 15 years now. I am unable to drag audio files into the timeline in edit mode, Da Vinci Resolve only allows me to add audio files to the timeline in Fairlight mode. Is this a common thing or a bug?
Thanks for all your priceless information regarding DR. Good Day, Ive reviewed many vids, including most of yours; and I may have missed this paicular effects tutorial; if there is one, but Im new to DR18 and Im trying to make a telephone "ONLY", vibrate as it rings in my clip. can you explain how to do that?
Hi Casey, we are trying to make a music video of our studio recording. I have the video tracks(each of us playing our instruments) lined up with the music on separate timelines and now I want to cut sections from them into the main track, but when I alt+drag the clips up, I want it to stay locked into the timing of the music. Is there a simple way to do this? FYI, this is my first attempt at using Resolve, so I'm very new to the software. Before this, I've only used CapCut to make short clips for our social media accounts. I've learned everything I know about resolve from watching your tutorials, including the 2+ hour beginner tutorial. Thanks for all of those videos!!
I cut a portion of a clip for an intro to crossfade into my main music track. When I tried to play it back, it played the whole track rather than the clipped portion. I'd ensured that I wasn't just selecting a file when playing back. I was on the Cut page. I gave up on it at that point.
Personally I find side chaining a lot better than auto-ducking. Especially since when I used to use auto ducking I would end up needing to manually fix the keyframes anyway. Checking side-chaining for dialogue elsewhere on youtube.
One channel on any of those platforms meaning, I can only use the song for just one of them even tho it’s the same video? If so that’s be hard to pick which one to post it on. 😢

I have the music as an mp3 in my media pool but it when I drag it into an empty track it doesn't work. It doesn't appear in the track. I'm trying to add music to a slideshow of images.
Question::: When I spliced my audio track (to make it end earlier), the place where I spliced it turned into a glitch (jump) in the exported video. Do i need to "smooth out" the part where I cut it? Why did this happen? Thanks to Casey or anyone who could answer this!
i wanted to film myself on my phone reacting to something but when i try to add it davinci it wont work i know iPhone videos are mov files do i have to convert every video every time i want to add it into davinci?
Hi, has it ever happened to you with Resolve 18 that when you add music, any music, and it always sounds distorted? I even tried to record the same music with OBS and it sounds ok but when I add it to Resolve 18, it sounds distorted again.
Some really interesting and useful tips there for working on the Timeline with music. 😀 However I have a problem with the audio settings on my camera which creates four audio channels when I use a mic plugged into the 3.5mm Jack. Is there any way that Resolve can just show the two channels rather than all four which take up so, so much space on my monitor?
Do you need the other two channels? Could you delete the other channels from the timeline? Alternatively if you do need all, you can resize the audio waveform vertical heights independently. So you could shrink the ones you don’t want and make big the ones you do want to see.
hey so im having trouble adding music to my media pool I converted the song I want with mp3 from youtube and resole 18 still wont let me add it ive looked up what could be wrong and tried them all that i could find and it still wont add the song to my media pool, anyone have any suggestions on what to try next?
So I'm trying to make a fortnite montage and I don't have any music in my media pool I don't knoq how to put any song in there can anyone tell me how to?
I just had a look at Artlist. At $9.99 a month for personal creators, it's kind of pricey. That's up in the Netflix range and I'd get a LOT more value per month from Netflix.
Hey Casey I am a big fan of your videos but this video appears to be 'selling' music I enjoyed your video with our Mr Alex tech. I love the trick of the EQ setting to the music to reduce the same frequency! Nice!

Aaron, care to point me in the right direction to learn how to apply this concept efficiently?

Super helpful as always. Thanks homie!
well you can also use the ducking employing the compressor on fairlight
Thanks.
This is new to me and Im happy to know this for my editing.
really easy to understand
Thanks a lot , man for all the tips. Didn’t know about that second trick 🙏
you can use the compressor to set the effect of one track on another, so that the sound becomes quieter during speech
