Riley from Inside Out has some iconic emotions, but is it possible there might be an emotion missing? Could there be a 6th emotion waiting to be revealed?

It's weird how Riley has male and female presented emotions while Riley's mom has female presented emotions only and her dad has male presented emotions only. Is that just me?
Edit: WOW! 8 thousand likes and 490 replies! Thanks so much! Wow that's a lot. I'm kind of freaking out. This is MY comment! Wow! Thanks! :)
It's actually ties to her maturity, the older and more mature she gets, the more her emotions reflect who she is, like how her parents work together and pretty much wears the same clothes
Edit: okay I never do this ever, but I want everyone that read this that this theory is not mine, it's a direct answer from pixar when someone ask the same question about riley having both male and female emotions, it was meant as to differentiate the emotions characters, other people except riley has their emotions completely reflect the human characters for visual gags, and the one thing that miffed me off is that everyone who @ me just kept using the boy at the end as an example when they could just use the cool girl with blue highlights in Riley's *class* which is a clear sign of her and Riley's age gap and gender are similar, while the boy could argue that he's one year older than Riley at the epilogue, im not too angry about people keep saying that other characters is the same, but I'm really upset that everyone didn't use the clear much more perfect example that debunk this theory, seriously people am I the only one who watch the epilogue
its fun to speculate any hidden meaning behind this, but its all down to her 5 emotions being the main characters
Riley is trans now
Now I'm wondering what the mind of a trans person would be like, I'd imagine it being down right chaos and disgust as well as anger, and fear taking over everything when it comes to clothes and shit. I'm Transgender so, I would know. Forgot the constant fear of being crazy and not being manly enough because I like plush animals. Or, the episodes of depression and, you get the idea.
riley is enby now, i dont make the rules
i believe that love is within every emotion, because when you love someone, you love them through the happy times, the sad times, when you're angry, when you're scared, and even when you're disgusted XD. i think all of the emotions there can feel love, and that is why with Riley's mom and dad, all of the emotions contribute when making decisions about the spouse. Kind of like all of the mom's emotion's start fawning over the dad at the end of the movie because he had the idea to do the facepaint thing.

The missing emotions is surprise. Joy, Fear, Anger, Sadness, Disgust and Surprise are the 6 basic emotions that can be recognized in all cultures according to Ekman.

those are feelings, not emotions
@@daphnia9664 bruh those are the same things it's in context on what your trying to say
Do the emotions inside Riley’s head know that other people, like Riley’s parents also have little emotion people inside their heads as well? And if they do, do they ever try to communicate with them?
Looking at this from reality, I feel like people do sometimes - whether benevolently or with questionable motives - seek to bring out certain emotions in others, or seek to connect with a specific of another person's emotions. So even if not specifically seen as individual characters like this, that idea feels plausible.
Maybe sometimes? I mean, it's not like we're always aware that other people have their own emotions. We usually have to actively think about it.
At the end of the film, we are shown that all memories, core and regular, can be formed through the actions of one emotion, but also through that of two emotions. I think when any two of the main five emotions combine, the memory is that of another emotion not made into an actual character. The core memory that Joy and Sadness create is an expression of a familial kind of love. They’re memories of more complex emotions.
saddest quote in the film: "take Riley to the moon for me"

Technically, she's missing three: trust, anticipation, and surprise.
tbh anticipation is something all of the emotions feel
@@lusmiipangya-6013 Well, yeah. Emotions can be mixed together; for example, Joy + Trust = Love; Fear + Anticipation = Anxiety; Disgust + Surprise = Shock; Sadness + Anger = Envy; etc.
I think The Lust/Love Emotion in Riley’s mind would contain all three. Maybe? I dunno
I feel like surprise is something like fear and a different emotion working together rather then its own emotion
Trust is a choice, you choose to trust someone. It would be a mix of fear plus another emotion

Pink: love 💕
White: emptiness/blankness🤍
Black: anxiety/stress🖤

HEY ME TOO

If I'm being honest, I just thought that the colors of the flower being in the wrong order was a kid who knew all the colors of the rainbow but didn't know the order they were in.
This may sound fucked up but what do you think the whole cast of emotions will think when Riley gets to the day where she *Coughs* touches herself for the first time
Love is probably a phrase. Like confessing your love could be Joy and Fear, Kissing or performing any sexual activity could be joy and disgust, cheating would be anger and sadness, etc. love is combination of them.
Now years later the orange is came and turned out to be Anexiety, well can't wait for the Sequel tho.
The missing orange is “surprise” . Surprise is the sixth primary emotion. The emotions Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust are also primary emotions too. Surprise isn’t needed in Inside Out, Joy has a little bit surprise sprinkled on her anyway. Surprise was also hard to represent, there is joyful surprise, sad surprise, mad surprise, scared surprise, disgusted surprise, and there is really know "surprise surprise" that really exist.

I think that love is goes in happiness, since when you felt love you felt happy.

Love can be a sad thing too, though. Like if there's unrequited feelings or loss.
When you feel anger you feel disgust
Me who loves someone but it makes me sad: 0>0 imma pretend I didn’t see that-
Love feels like it would influence the other emotions more than being it’s own emotion.
Love can make you feel any emotion (apart from disgust) but mainly it can make you feel happy, bittersweet or sad.
In Plutchik's Wheel of Emotion, there are 8 basic emotions: Joy, Trust, Fear, Surprise, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Anticipation. Love lies in between Trust and Joy
I feel like, love is one emotion that is part of every emotion. You can be disgusted, when someone confessed their love to you
You can be angry if you can’t figure out something about the way you love or smth (this could be like figuring out sexuality, type or smth like that, which is a big factor for love)
You can feel joy when you are around ur loved one.
You can be sad, when you confess your love, but you are rejected..
And you can feel fear. Fear of bonding with someone you love.

@@InitialPC good, it’s technically about stalky serial killing old guy and a kind of stalky dog guy fighting for a teenager’s affections.
.....Surprise!.....
It was Psychologist Paul Ekmans model of "6 core emotions" that was used for the film. Surprise is also the perfect emotion to use for a sequel because the very nature of Surprise explains why it was hidden in the first film. It doesn't interact directly with the other 5 emotions because Fear, Anger and Disgust have a negative relationship with it. So it often hides in other parts of the brain. It's going to be up to Happiness and Sadness (who've made amends) to show the other emotions why it's an important & powerful emotion for Rileys personal development and her relationships with others. And there's many interesting ways they can portray Surprise as a character. Maybe Surprise can break the 4th wall or phase IN(side) & OUT of existence?
Lastly, what better time period to represent Surprise for Rileys life as a teenager than Puberty?
What about Confusion, i always thought that was neccessary since Riley was a child and her parents should make the right decisions for her. So as she grows up, she might gain confusion as an emotion. Ps. In my opinion orange represents emotion well

I don’t think there are any missing emotions. All feelings are composed of the five basic emotions shown. I’ve seen a lot of people suggest orange as shame or guilt, but in my opinion that’s a combination of sadness and fear. Of course it feels more complex than that, but fundamentally it’s just made up of those two feelings. Romance or flirtatiousness on the other hand is sort of a branch of happiness, however I do think that it could do with its own character. Given that Riley is a child she wouldn’t have truly experienced that emotion yet, so it could be introduced as a new character when she’s older.

im pretty sure all 5 emotions each fill in for the missing emotions:
Joy= Excitement, Surprise

I feel the primary emotions we see in the movie might make up the others as secondary or tertiary (we see them at the table in the parents' heads, working as teams, that could make a bunch of groups, that could form a lot of groups, maybe the groups are secondary emotions tertiary if 3 are working together, there might be a few that need 4 and even one that needs all 5.

All that crying, missing her parents before leaving the bus, it wasn't because of love instead because of guilt
If I got my theory wrong you may correct me
Like he said, the love emotion would operate like the desire to want an S/O, or to fall for someone. Riley DOES love people, she’s not IN LOVE with people, there’s a difference. Like the type of love you would give to a spouse, is not the same kind of love you’d give to a parent. If that makes sense.

This's Disney we're talking about ya'know,I'm glad there not making a sequel because they'll just screw it up! I like the first movie perfectly fine on its own.
All I know, the missing emotion is a Love emotion which needs to call "Lovely"
I think that the orange flower petal might represent empathy because when you get older you start to get empathy for people. But I do think that love could also be the orange flower petal because there is an inside out short that is Riley going on her first date.
The missing orange emotion is surprised 😁
the thing that breaks the entire theory is the fact that everyone, even the adults, have only 5 emotions.
he literally explained that too. he said that it's just for simplicities sake, because the movie is targeted towards kids. if there was another emotion, the kids wouldn't understand and/or would be confused about it.
@@abookwing I know he said that, but what he said just sounds like an excuse.
Love is literally all of the emotions mixed together:
Anger from the two of you in an fight on where to go on a date night,
Fear of you screwing up the entire date cause of said fight,
Disgust when someone tries to flirt with them and you're RIGHT there,
Sadness when they start to avoid you, and you think they might actually dump you for them,
But finally Joy when you realized they were secretly getting ready to spend the rest of their lives with you.
I think a missing emotion is love
Watching this 4 years later sometime after the announcement of Inside Out 2 and maybe love will be a new emotion Riley gets since she supposed to be a teen in the second movie. A first love that takes control of her headspace and competes with Joy or just overrides the other emotions on decisions completely would definitely be interesting. Or as some theories believe, Riley finds out she’s adopted and a new emotions pops up there, maybe longing or belonging as she tries to find out more about her biological family.
Sad, happy, anger, disgust (maybe love idk) and fear are the main emotions, and out of these comes out emotions like surprise (depends on type of surprise), embarrassment (sadness(maybe))
Etc
Love has many different forms but there shouldn’t be a separate one for romantic or sexual love, all types of love are equally as strong and important so if there was a love emotion they would probably appear first.
Also love is more of a feeling but that’s more debatable so I get if people disagree with me on that
I just think that "love" is encompassed by Joy since when you feel loved, you feel happy.
