I actually never care what people wear, as long as they don’t care how I ride my bike wether a racer or a commuter bike, let people wear whatever they want, pretty sure any normal person knows how and what clothing they need for their daily missions. This feels like a bad commercial trying to sell you shit you actually don’t need.
I bike to work just about every day. I'm fortunate that my current employer has a very nice change room (with nice clean showers) and I have my own spacious locker. I wear shorts, t-shirt, etc, in the warmer months and parka, jeans, long-johns, in the winter. We even have an in-door bike lock up. Probably the sweetest deal in Winnipeg for cyclists.
Thanks. It is largely based on the conditions of the road. I prefer to cycle on the tertiary roads, but they get the least love from our snow-removal team. Temperatures and such are manageable by dressing properly (I'm old enough to put function ahead of form).
Northern New Hampshire here and I have to hang it up after a few snow falls. They plow it all to the side of road but don’t remove it frequently. The snow banks build quickly and I just run out of room.
Do the jeans last okay? They’re what i wear mostly and almost always for work and so prefer to cycle in them but find I wear through the crotch really quickly. If you’re not having the same problem, could you let me know what saddle you are using! Thanks
Hiking gear is perfect for urban cycling, I use a lot of my Montane gear for my bike. In fact cycling and hiking are very closely related, the only major difference between them is fit and weight. Hiking pants work well because they're designed to be breathable, designed with movement in mind, water resistant/proof and adjustable at the ankle, if needed. My waterproof jacket is perfect as well, it has pit zips, reflective details and breathable. You could add toughness and durability, hiking clothes are designed to be tough and reliable in foul weather, nothing worse than cycling in damp clothes. If you look more towards the fell runner's type of kit, you can find some surprisingly useful clothes for the road.
This video would be a lot shorter in The Netherlands :-).... Just take your bike and go to work, done. No special clothes needed, if you need to wear a suit and tie at work, no problem, you will even look stylish on your bike. Also no helmet needed here because of our great road safety and cycle paths which are separated from the roads... and flip flops are actually great to cycle with in summer...
Very nice tip. Doubt it works properly on actual denim (not the crap, elastane-riddled "denim" in her video that retailers are pushing these days) but useful for trousers/chinos, certainly. Will give it a try :-)
Yep, I've ruined trousers getting caught in the chainring. Also, riding in white jeans on a bike with a poorly-maintained chain was a bad idea! Well, *two* bad ideas but you get my drift, lol.
Sometimes, it doesnt matter what colours you wear or even if youre lit up like a big christmas tree... Someone will still hit you or pass you close enough to whisper 'SMIDSY' in your ear. The overall standard of driving is pretty low in the UK. While not all drivers are bad. A lot of them pick up bad habits or drop their standard of driving and drive however they want regardless of risk to other road users because once they have their license there are no further checks and the police fail to protect the rights of cyclists every year on the road and hand out paltry fines or 'warnings' for offenses committed and thats *IF* they can even be bothered to investigate the evidence.... I have known other cyclists with camera footage of vehicles passing so close they were clipped by wing mirrors but the MET still says there is "Insufficient evidence" to warrant any action taken. And failure to uphold road laws/rules/regulations has even ment that bad drivers getting away with murder or attempted murder in the past. Yet... the government jumps hoops when they can bring laws or Legislation where cyclists can be charged with 'death by dangerous driving' --- Now compare the yearly figures of the deaths caused by cyclists to those caused by people behind the wheel of a 2tonne vehicle....
Cargo shorts in summer, cargo shorts and leg warmers in autumn and cargo shorts with running tights in summer. Some of the online retailers have Dutch (bright orange) or Brazilian (bright yellow) football team tracksuit tops at heavily reduced prices. I paid less than £20 for the Dutch one and it comes with zip pockets. Waterproofs and overshoes added where necessary. I use m520’s and mountain bike shoes.
Rain, sun, sleet or snow, if I'm exercising (gently or not) I sweat. It's a gigantic pain because whenever I cycle anywhere that requires decent clothing and not smelling awful I have to be early. For someone who finds being on time a struggle, that's hard. On the upper hand, I can't remember the last time I met up with people so I don't have to worry about this very often.
Yeah, most people sweat when riding, unless everything is flat, you have perfectly paved separate lanes and you ride a granny bike granny fast(Netherlands). What most people don't realise is that if you take a shower and apply a bit of deodorant before leaving, all you need to do is change out of the t-shirt you arrived in and, I guarantee, you'll be odorless as much as the next guy in the office. Literally takes 30 seconds to wipe the sweat off with a paper towel and change your shirt. It's a very commonly used excuse though, but not really a valid one for most people. Source: A sweat prone, perpetually late, 15km in one direction commuter through a not completely flat area with infrastructure so bad, just thinking of it would make most cyclist from developed countries break into sweat and give up before even leaving.
It really depends on the bike you're using. To get to work or just generally around the city I use a dutch style roadster and with that I can basically wear anything I want. I can wear a suit or even long coats reaching over my knees and still ride comfortably without getting any dirt on my cloth.
Ok , I’m not sure what was the funniest. Simon giving himself a wedgie. Emma being rained on . Or Emma talking about what has probably happened to every cyclist ever at some point of time . Hilarious 🤣
I once tried a trail adapter for a kids bike. Despite doing bolts up tight, my son overtook me on a bend. Never used it again, but did buy a dutch bike with a double carrier cart in front, like an ice cream bike. Great fun. www.christianiabikes.com/product/26/
Anthony, Check out the Xtracycle Hooptie, I have one and my granddaughters, age 3 and 4 LOVE IT!! Xtracycle has a website and they have been selling complete bikes, some with electric assist for years now. My old Gary Fisher has the original Freeradical with the Hooptie and Magic Carpet. The girls ride it regularly with me on roads and trails, my wife follows on her bike when we are on the road for safety. It beats the heck out of a trailer, and I have one of those as well. The trailer collects dust!
@@gcn. It's what I'm aiming for, once I've upgraded to sram eagle 1x12 group set and Rockshox trekking forks, I'm hoping I'll have a hybrid that I could go where I would normally hike but use it as a daily driver in town.
Even if I'm going through the city, but it's a training ride I wear normal kit. Otherwise if it's a leisure ride I just wear whatever I have on at the time
Just my opinion, but wearing dark clothing (like that worn by the presenters during most segments in the video) is simply not best practice. I know wearing light colored clothing runs the risk of showing dirt and grime. But it is SOOOOOOOO much easier for drivers of cars (especially senior drivers) to see cyclists wearing light clothing.
I hate when other people tell me how to dress when riding my bike or to wear a helmet. It's my business what I do, when and where I do it, and nobody else. Some people need to learn to keep their opinions to themselves because really people like me are not interested in what you have to say if all you can do is pick and criticize. I like the dark clothing because I actually believe you can see it better plus it's an extension of my personality.
Charles Rush I really wasn't trying to tell you what to do. Just trying to be light-hearted. But as is often the case, humor can be tricky on the internet. Apologies. I live in a fairly rural area and I can state without doubt that riders on the road, wearing dark clothes like those in this video, are incredibly harder to see...especially at dusk and dawn. Certainly, the cyclist getting hit by a car is getting the worst deal. But, the driver of the car, who simply didn't see the cyclist has to live with the trama of that event too.
If you commute daily on your bicycle to work, having a pannier rack and good pannier bag as you don’t get a sweaty back, it was the most useful thing I bought for my commuter bike.
My problem with those lovely wind and water resistant jackets is that I end up sweating like crazy when wearing them, so I´m saved from water from the outside yet tormented by water from the inside.
Higher quality ones (I have goretex) help shed excess heat, you can also try a wind jacket for more breathability but less water resistance if the commute is short or lighter rain.
Another tip for women cycling, some leggings can be see threw when your wearing them. I always feel like I should say something but am worried about someone reacting badly to a guy telling them that their nickers are on show
It's really not. When it's a man, I don't need to be seeing flabby builder's bum, and when it's a woman, I don't need to be seeing whale tail. Christ on a bike, it's not difficult to dress with a bit of modesty. smh.
I live in a suburban area and its nearly summer here. During my daily commute, I will be biking at around 1-5pm in the afternoon and people will be wearing yellow vest and jackets and have 2-3 bike lights on, flashing in my face when the sun is at its highest point and its 70 degrees or 21C outside. Which is straight up ridiculous.
I wear For hot day's : shorts low cut socks regular shoe's ( sorry not riding clipless yet ) workout shirt with wicking material ( works the same as cycling jursy with out the hi cost ) and fingerless gloves Cold day's : almost the same just add more long sleeve shirt with wicking material wind braker sweater over that full finger gloves work out long pants I call them leggings ha ha ha ha sounds funny but yeah and shorts over for my head/face just a ninja mask or face/kneck mask my face mask also works as head cover 8 ways to use For rain : rain what is that ?????? Sorry I live in California rain is rear here but I guess I will be the same as my cold gear So thats my biking wear it work's o and yes this is to work and at work I ride my bike for my line of work only difference is I put a uniform over it
MB shorts and a 1x up jersey top with the obvious helmet and gloves and as a scot i can promise you no body cycles in kilts very heavy wool skirted fabric is not something you want to take on a bike
Rolling up your right trouser leg is a massive commuter expression of style. Sock choice is also very important. Also that was a magnificent lunge from Si.
I wear my running/hiking gear with my mountain bike baggy shorts to go with my, erm, mountain bike. No way I'd trust the whoppers where I work ragging their bikes out after a shift around my fragile carbon road machine.
5:58 here you can see the futile attempts of the common male cyclist to attract potential mates. Unfortunately, the female is not interested in such behaviour and looks for a more sustainable relationship.
What do you wear when cycling through the city?
I don't care about clothing but Not going to forget to wear helmet!
Mostly school uniform because way to school is the most I ride for commute.
That's something we never condone, so we're right there with you, AlastoroidTNC.
Would have liked to see some links to the clothes that you recommend.
I cycle to school with an extra flexible and crumple resistant school t-shirt
Great to see such topics covered - makes GCN live up to its name, after all not all Cycling is racing!
Thanks Frazer!
Where can I buy that gray bike with the fenders at, online?
Speaking of wasps and bees, i've had a horsefly get caught up my shorts before so there are dangers there too.
That doesn't sound fun
cycling underwear w/ a gel pad and any old shorts or jeans.
Who makes those shorts he wearing!?
As an official dude on a fixie, I actually have a contractual obligation to be in lycra at the supermarket on the way home

Can you all wear socks please, this isn't GTN commuting.
😂
All right, I'll stop wearing my skinsuit to the market. Yeesh.
I won't
how about speedo?

Winter cycling in Winnipeg! I salute you, sir!

Sounds like you have an ideal set up for cycling to work!
Do the jeans last okay? They’re what i wear mostly and almost always for work and so prefer to cycle in them but find I wear through the crotch really quickly. If you’re not having the same problem, could you let me know what saddle you are using! Thanks
we could all use more exercise, says travolta, while being in incredible shape....
Kyle Okamoto I was thinking the same
GCN: Ladies, consider a high-neck t-shirt
Me: to avoid flashing?
GCN: goodness no, you do you, it's to avoid things like bees and wasps
Me: 😮
yesssss so wholesome!
still nobody from the Netherlands in the comments saying you can wear your business suit just as well and it ain't no big deal...
This is an dutch invented artform
They also don't wear helmets. Fuck 'em.

really wish the UK was like that.. it sounds like a dream
Emma looks like every supply teacher I ever had 😂
Loving this urban series!
Cheers Jon!
Flies always end up in my eyes, I wouldn't be able to see much with a neckline that high
More of this please.
Glad you are enjoying the urban series Scott
New channel: Global Commuter Cycling Network. Can you do all NCN routes, please?
Nice idea!
wear what you want, ride what you want
Chrome Industries makes some very cool cycling friendly clothing. Their shorts are super high quality.
Anyone else tuck their pants in their socks (rather than clip or rollup)?
pinch and roll perhaps? ua-cam.com/video/Nn5HyRpA_q8/v-deo.html
I do, the one day I forgot to do so, my pants split pretty badly at the bottom from getting stuck
youd have trouble doing that in the uk

sweat =/= smell
This also speaks of an infrastructure issue. In the Netherlands, for example, they dress for the _destination_, not the journey.
Yeah, most people sweat when riding, unless everything is flat, you have perfectly paved separate lanes and you ride a granny bike granny fast(Netherlands).

Mr. Travolta's "baggy" shorts fit him like damn lycras... How much does he squat? :D
My commuter/ everyday bike has toe clips and strap and I couldn't do without them. Plus you can wear your normal shoes!
It really depends on the bike you're using. To get to work or just generally around the city I use a dutch style roadster and with that I can basically wear anything I want. I can wear a suit or even long coats reaching over my knees and still ride comfortably without getting any dirt on my cloth.

I'd like to suggest a video topic I've not seen. Safest/best ways to cycle with a toddler. Love the content! Safe riding and cheers!
I once tried a trail adapter for a kids bike. Despite doing bolts up tight, my son overtook me on a bend. Never used it again, but did buy a dutch bike with a double carrier cart in front, like an ice cream bike. Great fun. www.christianiabikes.com/product/26/
Please DO NOT do this video! Don't need ignorant advice from sports/racing cyclists on how to bicycle with toddlers
Just let 'em stand on the bars and enjoy the breeze :)
The best way to ride with a toddler is to use someone elses
Anthony,

I'm always struggling to find reasonably priced commuter cycling gear...stuff that is neither road lycra or baggies but is still comfortable.
Need to know what that bag holder on the front of si's bike is called, I'm looking for one of those.
@Siv Porteur rack
Excellent tips and yet another awesome video by GCN. It would be great to have a list of the gear and clothing featured in the videos.
I could add hiking shoes and boots as well, waterproof, tough, good grip on the pedals.
Nice choice, is that what you go for?
@@gcn. It's what I'm aiming for, once I've upgraded to sram eagle 1x12 group set and Rockshox trekking forks, I'm hoping I'll have a hybrid that I could go where I would normally hike but use it as a daily driver in town.
My waterproof hiking boots are what I wear everytime its raining. Luckily mine are all leather and can look nicer in a casual office.
Even if I'm going through the city, but it's a training ride I wear normal kit. Otherwise if it's a leisure ride I just wear whatever I have on at the time

Charles Rush Your bike shirt, that says "Old People Suck" may have something to do with that. 🤣

Always lycra! Got to get the QOM/KOMs
Always? I like lycra, by it's appearance and by its function. But my weight is 105 kg and height 175 cm. It will look very weight, didn't you think?
2 in 1 bibs. You hide the lycra. Removable chamois shorts have pockets; wear a casual shirt.
Nice commuter clothing choice!
meanwhile in a tropical country near the equator...
Brooks on GCN? I never thought I'd see the day, but it makes me happy. Getting it wet at 5:21 though? 😱
You beat me to it!
Nice video but use of the word “aesthetic” as an adjective in that way really gets my goat. It’s like describing something as being “appearance”...
If you commute daily on your bicycle to work, having a pannier rack and good pannier bag as you don’t get a sweaty back, it was the most useful thing I bought for my commuter bike.
Si's sock game is STRONG!!
You never talk about having a bell on your bike?
Certainly likely to be of use when riding in the city!

Thanks for taking the time to write that out! :) I guess I'll just have to try some different types of jackets.
luckymouse1988 now you will still sweat with all of them eventually, but I do find a significant difference.
Another tip for women cycling, some leggings can be see threw when your wearing them. I always feel like I should say something but am worried about someone reacting badly to a guy telling them that their nickers are on show
" see threw when your wearing" missed the four-word-misspelling bonus by spelling 'waring' correctly #ffs #mansplain
John O'Brien Dude! get with the program and stop acting like a woman, they know what they’re doing and it’s ok.
It's really not. When it's a man, I don't need to be seeing flabby builder's bum, and when it's a woman, I don't need to be seeing whale tail. Christ on a bike, it's not difficult to dress with a bit of modesty. smh.
Thus John's worry is fulfilled. Talk about 'no good deed goes unpunished'!
Yes especially in bright sunshine!
Living in Phoenix, AZ I don't think there is such a thing as a seemless transition without having to shower.
Schindelhauer is simply an awesome bike. Looks cool. Paired with Automatix just makes it even better.
Why is Emma the one talking about safety when she's the only one with the murdered out bike?
I just wanted to see if I should wear jeans or joggers for going on my bike lol
I sweat, therefore I am
This must be the bit of Grease where Travolta dresses like a dweeb to win back Sandy.
I think the most important takeaway from this video is the necessity of getting a pair of Si's socks with the bicycle print.
Emma, could you tell me about the "Wasps and the bees"? My mother never had that talk with me. :\
Wasps and bees - YES. It happend to me once and it literally ruined my whole day. Good that I wasn't on the open road, coz that could end up worst.
Cycling runs on fat and makes you money. Driving runs on money and makes you fat. go figure. .
What size in Liters backpack is the man in all black wearing for his cycling commutes.
I just wear a hoodie and stretchy jeans and a bmx helmet when cycling a road bike
I wear
For hot day's : shorts low cut socks regular shoe's ( sorry not riding clipless yet ) workout shirt with wicking material ( works the same as cycling jursy with out the hi cost ) and fingerless gloves
Cold day's : almost the same just add more long sleeve shirt with wicking material wind braker sweater over that full finger gloves work out long pants I call them leggings ha ha ha ha sounds funny but yeah and shorts over for my head/face just a ninja mask or face/kneck mask my face mask also works as head cover 8 ways to use
For rain : rain what is that ?????? Sorry I live in California rain is rear here but I guess I will be the same as my cold gear
So thats my biking wear it work's o and yes this is to work and at work I ride my bike for my line of work only difference is I put a uniform over it
Can I ask you which shorts brand/model you use in 0:45? Thanks a lot in advance 😉
Wearing a skin suit, in the general public, is a good way to get a stranger s hand on your bum. Talk about awkward.
I like how they talk about bright colours, but in a same time they are wearing the blandest stuff they could find. Do as I say, not as I do, I guess.
What men’s cycling shorts are worn @ 36 seconds?
Working in a production plant, I’m going to get all sweaty at work anyways so I still cycle hard in my normal work clothes
I wear a bib underneath a skirt, much more comfortable.
Cool video !
Thanks Killer -Gamer!
MB shorts and a 1x up jersey top with the obvious helmet and gloves
and as a scot i can promise you no body cycles in kilts very heavy wool skirted fabric is not something you want to take on a bike
kyeeesh. ill stop wearing my mogul clothing.
I bike to work every day. I don’t own a car so I go everywhere by bike. Lycra everyday. Lycra everywhere.
Fist bump to Si for that belt drive commuter bike 🤜🌟🤛
What size backpack in liters is the man using for his bike commutes?
the most replayed portion is when he pulls up his undies LOL!!😄
What company was that rain jacket? Please and thank you.
What nice bikes to the fellas riden? Schindelhauer?
Cycling in big cities is crazy dangerous. Don't do it.
No amount of reflecting material can make you noticed to a driver looking down at their phone.
My sister tore off her big toe nail as a kid whilst riding her bike with flip flops on and I’ve never worn open toe shoes on a bike since!! 😩
😵
Someone is enjoying pouring that water a little too much.
I’ve never seen this woman in any uploads before
Rolling up your right trouser leg is a massive commuter expression of style. Sock choice is also very important. Also that was a magnificent lunge from Si.
Thanks, he's been practising
Heyy bees wont be a problem, what are the chances, leave the girls alone 😂
I never wear lycra and cleats anyway. It's cringe.
Which shorts is travolta wearing?
They look pretty good, whatever they are
OfficialJulianM pedaled.com/products/kyoto-gravel-short/black#7315
They are all wearing PedalEd clothing
Can i wear cycling short under loose shorts?
I wear my running/hiking gear with my mountain bike baggy shorts to go with my, erm, mountain bike. No way I'd trust the whoppers where I work ragging their bikes out after a shift around my fragile carbon road machine.
Nice 👍
5:58 here you can see the futile attempts of the common male cyclist to attract potential mates. Unfortunately, the female is not interested in such behaviour and looks for a more sustainable relationship.
Manuel Deubler Pretty tough to find. Skirts are common-culottes much less so, and not much choice if you did find some.
Should you wear underwear or does the no underwear rule also apply
Can you write on what models of bikes were you riding on? Because they look really cool especially with belt drivetraines :)
Which helmet is the guy with the khakis wearing?
'true scott man, please take note" 🤣🤣😂😂
What brand of bikes are they riding?
Posh boys get real don't believe the hype
Also, Si and (especially) Travolta's bikes are stunning!
Thanks :)
what is Emma's bike called?
Why are cycling shorts so long?
What is the brand of these bikes please ?
