Fun fact: The army green color which old man in riding was banned by the government of India for a very long time. This particular green color was made by royal enfield was supplied only to military personnel. Any civilian who choses to change their bullet to this particular color, would have their bike seized by cops and later the owner would be prosecuted. At that time Royal enfield could only sell the battle green outside india.

I have both a Classic 500 and an Interceptor, and any time I can get away with riding the 500 it's the one I take out. The interceptor is a great bike, but for putting around on the back roads, taking your time and just soaking in the view and the pure riding experience the Classic 500 is such a winner. Another thing.....although I didn't buy it to please anyone but myself it's still quite gratifying that it attracts so much interest from the general public. I've had old ladies who'd have to be in their eighties come up to me and say that their first boyfriend used to own an Enfield......stuff like that. This bike just exudes a friendly, easy going charm that seems to be irresistible to everyone. I just get a warm fuzzy feeling from owning and riding mine, I just love it, it's silly innocent fun.

Truth. I had a 535 continental GT and also a 650 continental GT. The 650 is leagues better in quality, freeway speeds, etc but I still prefer the looks and feel of the 535 without a doubt. I live in an area with a high concentration of Indians and can’t even tell you how many times I’ve came out of a store and seen them taking turns sitting on my bike smiling and really reliving a moment of their past, people that came up to me and showing me photos of their family in India on the ‘family’ royal Enfield they’ve had for 30 years, etc. It was amazing how much commotion that cheap (in price) that royal Enfield created. Even showing up to bike events, people would walk passed expensive Italians to come see and hear the thump of the Enfield. It really made a statement!

I bought my Classic 500 new in 2013. I rode it all over Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana in the mountains. I now have over 17,000 miles on it. There's nothing else like it, unless you can find a '40s or '50s bike for sale that doesn't break the bank. I wish you luck with yours!

I was heartbroken when I heard the RE 500 was being discontinued. I've wanted them for as long as I can remember. I managed to snag a used one from 2011 this year by absolute chance. It's a real dream come true. Wish I could still buy a brand new RE 500 and break it in from scratch, but something is absolutely better than nothing. I love my current RE 500. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Hey Ronin, I said the same thing on Freddie Dobbs RE 500 Video, about what this bike is.
    So as to say, if the Classic 350 is a Privet of an army, then the 500 is the Veteran Black Commando, its a serious yet simple machine, you can tear it down and put it back yourself with just basic tools, almost anywhere, it can take heavy loads and can probably tow a house ;) if there is a difficult task to be done, it will do it with confidence, if you need to transport a load of supplies to a remote village in the Great Himalayas, in difficult terrain, uphill, gravel, rain, mud, snow, slug, the motorcycle will reach, it will not stop, it will go, and in all the mess and madness of harsh weather and unforgiving terrain, you might find yourself surprisingly in some sort of comfort, and the warmth from that good old 500 cc engine in that "cold and fog and landslides and what not," and its in that moment you see the true character of the motorcycle, them viberations that quirkyness, its feels like its kinda alive, it kinda feels like the bike is telling you,...... "Nuts!, we will take this head-on!" and then you have that smile on your face, in those kinds of adversities against you. Mate, nothing like it. Places to reach where there are few to non-maintenance shops or little to no help, heck, when you are on the 500, you are the help! Simple. Seriously ;}

An astonishing versatile machine. I love mine , riding since 2019 in Portugal and Spain, with minor problems; the worst one:- The fuel pump. Not a fast bike and it shows their limits in highways, but the torque at low revs is fabulous making it a proper offroader and easy commuter.

A few years ago I started motorcycling again. Ended up with an EVO sporty, but I first wanted a classic 500. First royal enfield I saw and I fell in love. Then the 535gt came out and as someone who’s cut up a few Hondas to make cafe bikes I was very into it. Once they stopped making them I lost my chance. Regardless I own a Himalayan now along with my Harley’s and I love it. May go KLR650 sooner than later just due to my needs, but I will never hate on RE after owning that little 411.

Hi , got a Himalayan because my bank account’s a bit like your and the himalayan comes stock standard with centre stand, bash plate and even front bars you can hang bags or extra tanks too, most other bikes that would all be hundreds of dollars of extras, mostly very happy with it. Few little niggles though had the carbon fuel recycle unit replaced under warrant, he n later totally isolated as it kept giving grief, and the side stand isolating switch kept playing up making it hard to start. Still a wee niggle with starting, have found the fuel tank tends to pressurise and gives a big hiss when you open the tank, which could be part of the starting problem, any idea what could be causing that or how to fix it?????? Any tips appreciated!

Saw one with the military boxy panniers in-back, years-ago. That looked really authentic. You'd need to wear a pistol belt with a canvas holster with either an Enfield or Webley revolver, a Mk I Dispatch Rider's Helmet, some gauntlets, and a pair of those bent-lens MkVlll goggles, so you can motor-past the Jerries, without so-much as blinking!

Hi, if you could get a stainless steel pipe (about the same size as the handlebar pipe) - welded between the curve, it would reduce the vibration a alot. After that, you can cruse at 62 mph all day. No stress at all. (vibration is the real charm of royal enfield bikes, though. It gives you that raw experience.)
I have the 2014 desert strome. I had used different kinds of handlebars on mine. It did cost me some extra bucks but handlebars somehow didn't do well. One gave me some serious lower back pain. Then one day, I was riding my bike and this thought popped up in my head. I got the stainless steel pipe and had that welded at a local welder shop. This is really working. You gonna love it. If you are planning to keep this beauty with you, then you should try that idea. Love your work. 🙏

This summer, returning home from a weekend away, I stopped the bike on a remote hillside to check the map. Bike wouldn't restart on the button! Headlight permanently on + electric start & (it turned out) a duff battery = it won't go. Eventually I got it restarted with the kickstarter & got home.

15 km short of 60 000 mine got smashed at a crossroads. But I'll spend whatever it needs to get it fixed, that's how much I love it. I have two RE Classic 500s (and two Triumphs) I ride the REs everyday. So much fun. I rag them to the rev limiter in every gear and still get 90 mpg. I overtake more on these than my Triumphs just because you have to be so much more involved and plan more. Have to keep an eye on the speedo cos I keep hitting the limiter in third, just as im alongside the car😬 and lose foward momentum and have to snatch 4th😁. You have to add 30 minutes to any journey. Not because its slow (I criuse at 75/80mph) but because someone ALWAYS wants to talk to you🤣

As the Irish would say `you couldnt kill it with a stick`
a wise biker said about riding ANY bike - `its the way it makes you FEEL` there is no other criterion!
I have a riding history similar to yours - we are about the same age, and this bike (i have a 2014 c4 500)
makes me feel great, I really want to ride it almost every day. (I did over 5000 miles last year, none of it commuting as i am retired now) I threw some camping gear on it and went to the classic isle of man TT, and I loved every minute, she never missed a beat. `if its not broke - dont fix it`
ps I know you will, but please run her in properly, these engines really need it done right.
pps - the rear drum brake pivot is self-centralising, ensure the pivot backing plate is free to slide as they are usually painted over and dont move like they should (you do like quirky dont you ;)

Entertaining as always. I had two of these, I loved it & I hated it! What I loved was the old fashioned simplicity & laid back performance, what I especially hated was the prehistoric clutch, man - if you forgot to warm the thing up before pressing the gear lever down, you almost launched into space! Sort it, RE, so it would add a bit to the price but would be so well worth it. Also, I didn't like the wire wheels, great to look at as they were, too easy to punture the tube.
Having said that, the bike was just great for slow cruising.
Wish I could come down firmly on one side or the other, you described it well, Ol Man, 'quirky' as hell!

RE will soon relaunch Classic 500. But enthusiasts in India says it'll be more expensive. Classic is a work horse in India, it can pretty much do everything with little bit of customisation, it shouldn't go in niche category.

I love riding my various 2:50 BSA singles around. They are such good slow road motorcycles. I have the Enduro version but the street bikes are so light you could take them off-road without any worries within reason. I love my BSA Enduro bike on the sand trails north of my home in Florida and all the guys with the water cooled wonders and their ridiculous amounts of horsepower can't understand how I can keep up with them with such a slow old motorcycle. I laugh and I tell them I'll wave at you as a peel you off a tree that you hit at a hundred miles an hour. As for chain maintenance you guys are lucky you don't have to disassemble the clutch and the primary chain in order to put a new front sprocket on, but all the British motorcycles outside of vilaset were built the same way and so that taught you how to service your own motorcycle. I am bemused by people who will not even change their oil on their motorcycle because they don't want to get their fingers dirty they might ruin their mani pedi and have to take a shower with body wash. Hahaha!

By the 500 classic it will do everything the 350 will do plus not be so pushed when you go run it at higher speeds plus you will love having to have the kickstarter as well as the electric start because they are a low compression 500 single and they are not hard to start with the kicker. Plus you could impress all your friends while they push their pussy buttons to start their motorcycles.
