THE LEGACY OF BILLY SHELTON: Untold Stories of Training The Luttrell Brothers & Friends

- In this week’s Team Never Quit Podcast, Marcus gathers up with the legendary Billy “Soupbone” Shelton, of Willis, Texas, an Army Special Forces veteran who, for over 3 decades, has been providing intense physical and mental training for young men, producing Navy SEALS, Army Rangers and other military Special Forces soldiers. Soupbone’s approach is brutal, physically challenging and very successful. He prepares fighting men for the harsh realities of combat.
One of Soupbone’s gems is this podcasts host, Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL awarded the Navy Cross and author of the bestselling book, “Lone Survivor”.
Billy Shelton does it because He wants to see his “sons” come home alive.
(Also joining Marcus and Billy are Morgan Luttrell, Tommy & David Thornberry, who trained with Billy Shelton.)
In this episode you will hear:
• Melanie: In the 13 years that we’ve been together we get asked more about you than anybody else. (5:21)
• Billy: When I’d pull up and go in the front door [of the gym] they’d run out the back door. (13:07)
• Tommy: The new guy’s rite of passage was that they had a harder workout because he [Billy] wanted to put the screws to ‘em to make sure they got it. (25:54)
• Tommy: It’s not that we were born that way, it’s that we were made that way. (29:31)
• Tommy: Billy looked out his window and this kid [after his workout] was hunched over in his car. Billy asked, “Are you ok?” The kid answered: I feel great. I just can’t lift my arms to drive. (31:02)
• Morgan: No matter what shape you were in when you showed up, you’d eventually get us there.
• Marcus: You didn’t wanna bring anybody, but if you did, you knew they were gonna get it. (32:55)
• Morgan: If one of your buddies came down and they were struggling, it always put you in a position that you had to help them. (33:08)
• Morgan: Like in the military, if there’s a weak link, you were forced to get down there and get ‘em. (33:18)
• Marcus: To anyone who’s never seen a human being catapult over a wheelbarrow [full of rocks] while running… (40:58]
• Billy: I don’t look at em like a Marine or Navy SEAL or a hunter, they’re my kids. I love ‘em. (44:50)
• Melanie: No matter what you put Marcus or anyone through, they just wouldn’t quit. (53:09)
• Billy: You CANNOT quit. (53:14)
• Tommy: If there’s something wrong, you know it. There’s help out there for you. (65:27)
• Tommy: I walked in there and there was 8 people. I said “what’s the party for?” They said “sir, we’d like you to have a seat.” I’m like “why? Did you guys find a tumor or something? And they’re like “Oooh” (66:14)
• Tommy: Iron therapy is the way I get through stuff. (67:30)
• Tommy: One of the docs that was part of the surgical team had Covid, with my skull open. (68:55)
• Tommy: We don’t stop - ever. (70:32)
• Tommy: Time to get back in the fight. (72:57)

About TNQ Podcast:
Each week join Retired Navy SEAL and Lone Survivor Marcus Luttrell, Morgan Luttrell, and Producer Andrew Brockenbush as they’ll take you into the “briefing room” to chat with incredible guests who share their greatest never quit stories. This humorous, heartfelt, and entertaining podcast is changing lives and has become a beacon of hope and resilience to those who are facing the impossible. One of the best ways we can support our community is to share their stories so that we might inspire others to Never Quit.
We’re bringing you real-life stories of men and women who took life’s toughest challenges and met them head-on, radically changing their own lives and inspiring others to do the same.
I’ve been waiting for this since Marcus described Billy in one of his presentations.
He’s exactly as I pictured him
and the book
Billy Shelton had been lying to the Luttrell brothers - he’d never been in the Special Forces. According to records, Specialist Five Shelton was a truck driver and a general’s chauffeur at Fort Eustis, Virginia. He was a truck driver while he was stationed in Vietnam, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it doesn’t give him the right to lie to teenagers. There was a single tour of Vietnam, not the three tours he’s bragged about.
Every town & every boy needs a Billy Shelton in their lives!!

Amazing!! Soup, you helped make America great! Thank YOU for your service, not just your own serving, but by creating men who were willing to die for the life I live! Amazing!

30:49 that positive attitude, telling u can do it, u just have to want it, and don’t give up, that’s what it’s about!!
So I can’t put into words just how important it is to have “Billy Sheltons” in the world! Forget the military aspect, I can assure you if we had more Billy’s providing POSITIVE LOVE & ACCEPTANCE for kids today. We wouldn’t have any schools being shot up! - basically all human beings need LOVE & ACCEPTANCE; these kids don’t get it at home, so as a last resort, they go to school looking for it. When they get rejected at school also, it flips a switch where they take on this attitude of “Ohhh HELL NO You wanna Reject Me? Ohh I’ll show you!” - everyone will get rejected at school if your parents make 6 figures one group will bully you. If your poor another group will bully you. So it’s incredibly important kids have Love & ACCEPTANCE AT HOME they can fall back on. Where the problems come in is when they get neglected & Rejected at SCHOOL & HOME simultaneously. It manifest itself in different ways. -- But even in racing from 4-25. I remember having all the old guys mentor and show me the way as I progressed threw series. But sometime around 2003-2005 I noticed that generation that was born in 1960-present they stopped taking care of the youth around them. I have 5 daughters and 1 son between 6-20yrs old. My wife and I had our first 2 very early. Not accidentally. We just knew what we wanted. But all of them race dirt/asphalt both. So we mentor a whole group and they seem to be a lot more confident and sure of themselves. Love & Acceptance is the most powerful forces . We need more Billy’s in the world to solve the current issues!
sorry Klk1900 your wrong about one thing! these kids are not shooting up schools because of rejection. it is to get that instantaneous fame! face on the big screen. do to all the social media stuff people want like and attention on a much bigger scale than ever!
Yeah it’s nice to have Billy’s in the world but you can’t have Billy’s without kids that want it. I live in a small town in the mountains of NC and we have a lot of shitbags around here. But there’s some damn good kids around here. So there’s still hope left.

Billy is the reason these dudes are alive.
My Billy Shelton was Grandmaster Bill Shelton who was my initial Shorin Ryu Karate Sensei, he is the brother of Grandmaster Parker Shelton both who originally came out of Bell County, Kentucky. Either way, a "Billy Shelton" saved my life years later as a police officer when my initial Karate training took over and I was able to survive a horrendous domestic call and I am alive still today.

@@US_ARMY_25_INF._DIV. very true. It came out when he started to write the book. We were all hurt by it and dealt with the truth in our own way. Who cares if Billy’s past is or is not what he claims. He served in some capacity and that’s honorable. Most importantly, Billy Shelton shaped these kids to be Warriors on and off the combat fields. Warrior doesn’t mean killing! Obviously these young men had something special inside; Billy just brought it out! That is special and should be celebrated!!!
The first SEAL I ever saw was a Boot Camp "Pusher" in Orlando when I was a Boot. He was a short & slight built package(Maybe 5'8" or so and 160 Pounds soaking wet, but Hard as the proverbial Rock. I'll never forget seeing him running around the "Grinder"(An asphalt Square that was 1/4 mile on each side, meaning one trip around the Grinder was 1 Mile), ahead of his Company. Only difference was that he Ran Around The Grinder Backwards, Calling them everything but Children Of God, Cussing at them with every breath. Then he'd drop them for push ups.....Maybe 20-25, or 50 if he was pissed, for the Boots, but he'd do 100 two handed Push Ups followed by 50 one handed Push Ups.(First time this Sheltered Farm Boy ever heard one man refer to another as a "Pussy") I never saw him sweat or his uniform wrinkled without sharp creases and his "Gig Line" perfectly aligned.........At least that's what my Scared Boot Ass saw in 1970, and I still see him that way in my minds eye today. He was the First Real Bad Ass I had ever seen. He wasn't Bold, Brash And Loud or telling everybody what he could do and what he had done. Later on I met some Team Guy, Force Recon Marines and Green Beanies, All of them "Serious Individuals" but that Pusher was my first exposure to "Elite Level Troops"
