    The professional say it is dumb to use a hybrid when fuel saving is negligible. I once thought the same thing but now I know better. Even next generation corvettes will have hybrids. Fuel saving is not even part of the discussion, only performance!

    i've driven both engine options as well and i was really hoping the hybrid was gonna feel night and day performance w/ having 100 more lb-ft of torque. Because of the added weight from the battery pack it really just evens out. it does give more initial torque off the go and also when cruising, the hybrids just perform much smoother in daily driving conditions. the hybrid definitely gives that more luxury feel like a lexus would. if someone wants the hybrid for more acceleration, don't bother. its really not quicker than the regular iforce. it is intended for a high-end premium driving feel and more torque. not for quarter mile speed.
    what would really be next level performance out of a hybrid Tundra is if Toyota ever does a plug-in hybrid version like the Toyota Prime vehicles. that would have a significant acceleration difference for the tundra.

    This is helpful as I am drawn to the iForce Max for the added power but wondered if it really makes a real world difference. I occasionally pull a 20' 10k rated dual axle trailer hauling a compact tractor and/or off-road toys. The couple of times I've had the trailer maxed out on 2-3 hour trips, it was everything my '21 Tundra could pull while achieving 7mpg.
    I am very put off by the high prices Toyota is asking for there trucks - they are all about $10K over what they should be. I like the Platinum Tundra 4x4 with 6.5' bed and iForce Max engine which is '70K compared to $66K for the standard iForce engine.

      I'm starting to see dealers selling under MSRP so they might get closer to what you want to spend and you'll have no trouble selling your 21 either if you decide to go that route.

    I'm still debating on purchasing a 2023 (or 2024) Tundra Limited crew cab TRD off-road, and have considered that the iForce MAX has great numbers, but adds a good bit of weight to the Tundra (500+ pounds). Does that offset some of the extra power and torque, and keep the increase in fuel mileage down? I was concerned that the auto start/stop feature would be much smoother with the iForce MAX, but you mentioned in a different video that unless you really push down on the brake pedal when stopped the start/stop function doesn't engage.
    Since I don't want the sunroof at all (rules out the 1794), it came down to needing the iForce MAX to get the all digital instrument cluster/display... and I don't need to pay several thousand more for a tiny bit of horsepower/torque number and the digital instrument cluster.
    Looks like I'm closer to seeing if my dealer can get the Tundra exactly the way I want it. And I'm sure you'll have more videos of cool aftermarket products that will keep my wallet empty. 🙂

    • @DrivenCompanion
      @DrivenCompanion  Рік тому +2

      The start/stop is definitely unimpressive in the standard iforce. Foot needs to be fully depressed but even then it won't engage unless there's no climate control on and the truck has been driven for a while. Start/stop as well as the engage/disengage of the hybrid system in the iforce max is impressively seamless and smooth

    I have a 22 sr5 tacoma. I check tundra's out of interest in them. What I saw from the factory specks, is that the max is now worth the extra money or maintenance cost.

  • @HuntsT

    Towing capacity is usually limited by suspension and braking components. With the i-force max extra weight from battery and electric motor, that makes sense. Towing comfortably is a different story, not having the power to maintain speed or pass fast enough especially around semi trucks is understated in this review video.

    I’m interested in buying a tundra to tow a boat. Was thinking the i-force max would be helpful because of the added torque.

    I wish they would come out with a non-hybrid Sequioa that had the ability to fold all the seats flat without having to use the shelf system in the back. That is such a deal-breaker for me sadly.

    In the truck, the Hybrid is faster than the regular gas engine. I have the Hybrid version and there is absolutely no way I would switch to a non-hybrid. I climb a 6k mountain pass between where I live and the city. The engine will turn off on parts of the hill and the electric will take over for a bit at about 40-45 mph as I pass through a small town. The transition between gas and electric is smooth, I normally notice because the tac drops to zero.

    I am not sure but I think the video is misleading on the similarities of performance between hybrid and non hybrid. I am currently driving though West Virginia mountains in passenger seat) and our 2012 sienna struggles going up hill. So I think the video is correct that there is not a noticeable difference when driving or tow capacity but I think it would be wrong to assume that is true when going up hill, passing or the ease to tow. Tow capacity and ease to tow are not the same.

    • @alexsmba
      @alexsmba 9 місяців тому

      The hybrid 2.5 on the Sienna, Highlander, and RAV4 is a different setup and probably makes a difference over the non hybrid version. On the Tundra, the twin turbo 3.4 is already really torquey on its own.

  • @qdllc
    @qdllc Рік тому +1

    To me, this is a fail for Toyota. They kept talking about making a hybrid pickup, but it doesn’t offer anything to justify the higher cost and maintenance concerns. Buy a nicer Tundra for the money you’d be spending.

  • @SSYoung125
    @SSYoung125 Рік тому +2

    "Max" just means hybrid.
    Also Toyota is.... being misleading about there horsepower and torque numbers. They are just adding the power of the electric motor on top of the gas motor and thats not how REAL horsepower and torque work.

    • @alexsmba
      @alexsmba 9 місяців тому +1

      They only add it on the power side, not the torque side. The torque from the electric motor is 184 lb-ft, but they rate the peak combined output of the Tundra iForce Max about 104 lb-ft higher than the non hybrid, and I believe it’s about 150 on the Tacoma. Either way, you still get all that 184 lb-ft, it’s just filling a bigger gap somewhere else, in the rpm curve, where the ICE is deficient, and less of a gap when the ICE is producing its peak torque. My point is they didn’t just “add it on.”

    Having owned an IForce MAX Tundra (2023 1794 Edition) and as of 1-2-2024 owning a 024 1794 NON-Hybrid I can speak on this very well... In the Hybrid version the electric motor AND the V6 ICE engine are DIRECTLY connected mechanically... I'm not sure how this VooDoo Black Magic is accomplished but I can tell you that after putting 24K miles on the Hybrid the power train ride quality is TOTAL CRAP!!! There is a very serious "shutter" in the drive train mainly at very light acceleration or at highway cruise levels. I'm convinced that the drive train just can't decide which has control (ICE 0r Electric) and therefore results in a terrible shuttering... not so bad when you are romping on it but daily driving is terrible and I'm convinced it is actually tearing itself apart internally as mine got MUCH worse over time. I also had the air suspension system which was also terrible. The pressures could never stay adjusted correctly (1 TSB and 2 trips to Toyota) and literally every time I took it in the pressures were all wrong... felt like the rear axle was bolted directly to the frame. My 2014 (which my son still owns) was a MUCH better ride! Literally just picked up my new truck 1 hour ago and it is 1000% better driveability. No shuttering in the drive train and the suspension won't make you want to wear a mouth guard to keep from chipping your teeth. Please go back and drive your Hybrid again and really look for that shutter... and trust me... it gets MUCH worse with time and miles. I'm convinced Toyota will be forced to eventually recall this entire power train. I encourage ANYONE considering a Hybrid Tundra to test drive it and pay VERY close attention at light acceleration and highway cruise speed (76-78mph). I promise you will regret buying a Hybrid!
