Charles Yun well I can speek for my car, Timing belt & water pump is changed at 172K miles at Lexus dealer( $1100), spark plug changed at 210K miles($350). Rear driver side door actuator went bad at 212K miles ( i changed it myself - $10 fix, dealer wanted $560 for that ). Only expensive thing that went bad is AC evaporators core, changed at dealer for around $1000. My local Lexus dealer offer 10% off on parts and Labor for 10 year older vehicles
I have had a 2005 gx470 and now have a 2008 gx470. best SUV ever owned, awesome driving on a beach and up and down mountains. tows nice too, up to 6500lbs. my 2008 just hit 202k miles and still looks and performs like new, I'm hoping to take it to 400k miles =)
Kirk, no heated steering wheel on 1st gen Gxs was available. 2010 GX Premium package was the first to introduce heated steering wheel (only the leather covered piece is heated though). Great review!
04 with 330,00 miles. Everything functions as new. Minus the air springs , not shocks. They have been replaced with coils to avoid imminent failure. No squeaks or rattles , with factory struts and shocks. Absolutely solid and planted at all speeds. Nearly silent , even at cold starts. Best vehicle I have ever owned , and perhaps favorite ever driven. Oh , and It hits the trails without missing a beat as well. If you are considering one look for a good carfax , and go for it. I did , a d have had no regrets. I fully believe it will do 500 k before it becomes any type of a problem. Oh , and it still looks extremely presentable , in and out.
I agree with you on all the points you make The mid 2000s of Lexus vehicles do have a different sense of class to them They seem more luxurious and has more presence than the newer ones And they don't seem to date as fast as the newer ones Ever since Lexus started to drastically change and trying to be like the Germans in a Lexus way The vehicles have a different feel...
Ahmed Moosaji I agree with you. Got a ls430 recently. Amazing car that I would not trade for most modern véhicules. The build quality is there and the look is timeless. The only changes for cars since that area are downsized engines (can understand) and more and more electronic gadgets (the only luxury factor it seems now) . Lane assist ? Good way to remove responsibility of the drivers who don’t really want to be behind the wheel.
I bought a 2008 GX470 last year (2019) with just 42,00 miles on it, I took a 13,000 miles road trip from Chicago to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada and Alaska without a problem.
I'm looking at picking up an '05-'09 GX470 myself. I rode in one the other day that had 223k miles on it, on a 5F day no less. It started from cold right up and there wasn't a squeak or rattle to be found. It did NOT feel like it had that kind of mileage, maybe 50k tops. Oh and I'm always amused at all of the fancier cars like this one not having a heated steering wheel. I still drive an '02 Maxima that actually has a HSW! Still works perfect and there's nothing better on a very cold day.
I've been on the hunt for a similar. In Mass, for example, the 05 to 07 can be had with anywhere from 145 - 170 K miles for $7-9 K, Seems like a good deal for an over engineered vehicle that'll lasts a while (I have 222K on a 2005 Pilot). The one thing that I'm nervous about is the inevitable expense to deal with the air shocks. Some people do the one time expense of replacing the system with conventional shocks, others go with replacing with new air shocks, but cost can be north of $2 K.
@@Chernabog123 Don't be scared of the air suspension, 9 times put of 10 they only need the air springs replaced. A pair of aftermarket bags can be purchased for less than $75 and if you are able to do basic auto repairs yourself, it's a 1-2 hr job to change them out.
I actually considered buying one of these as the number of off-road features which people don't know about and good prices you can find in the used market for these. Nice review, makes me want to look at the market again 👍
The GX460 is a great truck, but I would much rather have the 470. I’ve been working on finding one but every one I’ve found is sketchy. I did drive one the other day, and I can say first hand, it is an absolute pleasure to drive. No rattles, super smooth, and the 4.7 V8 sounds amazing.
Another thing you can do, which I did and was able to. If you don't use those two rear jump seats, they are super easy to take out. I store mine in a bedroom closet. You have a a lot more space back there and the less weight would equal better mpg. Just a thought.
If you drive reasonably you can get like 17.8 mpg, honestly not that bad for the size of the vehicle. I put to you open country a/t, 33's on mine and still get like 15.5 mpg.
I used to have an FJ Cruiser and know what you mean by smoothness. Not only was it smooth but reliable. I abused the hell out of it and absolutely loved it. So many memories...I am now planning on getting me a GX470 within the next month or two. Great review!
These are amazing off road vehicles most of them are just mall crawlers and hauling the kids around. You can get an amazing deal on a used one that’s never seen any off-roading There hidden jems 👍 great review on the gx
That’s cool. I have been looking for about 6 weeks and missed a few because they were selling like hot cakes! I just purchased a black 2006 with 177k but the owner just had timing belt, water pump, alternator, and newer tires. So that’s a relief. It’s also a southern truck with no rust. Looking forward to it.
8:37 for the pre-facelift models, the CD changer is actually in that center console. For DVDs, that is. Although you can slot audio CDs in there and they'll work.
i rode in a 2001 GS300 once after a party and for about a half hour i was like hey are we gonna get going yet? My buddy goes hey were on the highway cruising already and i didnt even feel it going along it was so smooth. Plus i couldnt even hear the exhaust when the car was idling
If you are serious about "Visibility" then Sir, you need to drive a Subaru Forester XT Touring. Why the XT Touring? Because working at a Lexus dealership, I am sure you are used to creature comforts. The main reason though is because of the excellent outward visibility. PS: Thanks for taking the time to review this Beautifully appointed GX.
thanks Kirk for a very proffesional review Im looking seriously for one in Canada here and like you I prefer the older type grill design ,I know the toyota lexus brand for these type of suvs are long lasting and strong, Ill keep looking and am now convinced towards the 470 rather the 460 both price wise and design thank you very much it was a great help in a final decision Bill
My wife has one, 07 GX 470 with about 110K miles. Not as reliable as it should be IMHO for a Lexus. (new radiator, new front half shafts, new drive shaft and new air springs in the rear) awesome road trip vehicle though.
5 років тому+1
Well that will be issues with all newerish vehicles. Nobody build anything to last anymore. Lexus does have issues with certain things radiators is one of them as well as alternators. Overall yes they are reliable, but crap breaks and they build it that way no matter what manufacturer you buy
@ I'm comparing the two that are in my family..and if a ISB Cummins needs a rebuild at 140k miles have you ever though about oh, oil changes on them every once in awhile?
I love this era of Lexus and I would love one of these, though my one hang up is how some of the climate controls are buried and controlled via the touch screen. I’d greatly prefer a manual dial or button to control fan speed, in particular. Have you found the screen to be awkward or cumbersome? (I noticed it took two tries to take “dual” off at 4:36.) Or has it been a non-issue for you?
I have a 2007 GX470 with 160,000 miles. It still looks and drives like a brand new car. I plan on driving it until either it dies or I die....whichever comes first!
I agree. The GX is actually a Land Cruiser rebadged (Prado I believe??). It’s natural environment is off road in a dusty desert with a 50 cal machine gun turret mounted in place of the sunroof!!! :)
I just bought a 2006 Lexus GX 470 with 135K, and it’s the best driving car I have ever owned. They changed very little between my 2006 and this 2009. It sure loves premium gas (lol), but I don’t mind. I expect this engine to last 500K, at minimum.
The only thing I don't like about this SUV is the poor space management, especially the third row. I wish this didn't have the third row so that the second row would have a little more space.
I LOVE that it's SIMPLE- funcitonal-- and doesn't have all that COMPUTER "info-tainment" BUL>>>>T to make it useless.. Nobody needs infotainment.. the driving and where you are going is plenty-- not that computer crap.. and STICK for changing the 4x4-- PERFECT!!!! IT IS JUST THE BEST period!!!
@@asmith7094 I'm very sure I've seen a video review where the front was raised. Just can't find the particular video now bit I guess, you're right with that.
I would also have POWER brake upgrade done.. (power being the larger- stronger MUCH BETTER braking system)... with that much weight- you NEED that- especially offroad.
@Jacqueline C It’s a lot like the GX, but it has more leg room, and a bit more of a premium feel, The GX feels more like an extended Rx. Hope this helps!
I have a 2006 sequoia with 259k same engine and it also runs like new My 2003 sequoia same engine slightly different also has 260k and also runs like brand new
I'm really interested to get a 470 GX but I don't know how expensive could maintenance and spare parts are, I have a Bmw5 series but I wanna change by a 4,x4 car and I think Lexus 470 GX is an excellent option. What do you think about maintenance and spare parts are too expensive?
I recently had to replace my 2005 tundra which was like new and i sold for 50% what i paid new. I wanted something that i could still haul with like my tundra. I wanted same reliability, but Seqouia too huge for wife, highlander too small to haul with. Learned about the GX470, and oh my gosh! I bought a 2007 here in Minnesota and paid $15k. There was some deferred maint on it so i replaced the timing belt, water pump, serpentine and it had 1 torn cv boot for just under another 2k at a trusted toyota svc dept. Virtually verything on this truck works and i absolutely love it. Everything he says is true. Mine has 119k miles now but drives and feels like brand new even in freezing temps here in minneapolis. I only commute to work 2 or 3 days per week so i would admit it would be wasteful and painful to fill the premium fuel for long daily commutes. Oh, also new set of michelin mud and snow and its like a 70k vehicle for 20k that with the few miles i drive will hopefully give me 5 - 10 yrs!
I bought my 2006 GX 470 in Minneapolis last year as well & replaced all the same things you did including the one cv boot! Mine has 100k & absolutely love it, especially in the cold & pushing through the snow. The size is perfect, the sequoi was too big.
I just got a 2008 GX470 in white that only has 21000 miles. All it needs is new tires. Do you know where to get touch up paint for the snow white color?
@@KirkKreifels what's your opinion between a LX470 or GX470? I know gas mileage will be worse in LX, but man is the LX line desirable. And I am not a fan of the rear gate/door on the GX.
@@KirkKreifels Yeah, a newer, lower mileage gx can be had for less. And are easier to find. A clean, low mileage 2003 or newer lx almost pushes me to a lx570. The GX might be a smart conpromise.
Yes. The LX will run on regular. For best performance and long-term engine health, premium is preferred. Likewise, you can put regular in almost all Lexus vehicles and it should be just fine. The NX turbo would be a bit concerning - unless you lease it :P
Lexus SUVs have become outdated. They were good back in the day, but outdated now. The older RX350 had a premium feel to them, but no more. Same feel for GX and LX. No one wants to drop +$85,000 on LX570 when there is not much difference between a 2010 LX vs. a 2018 model. Lexus has become so obsessed with this sporty car design bullshit that they have forgot what made them successful in the first place. Poor sales in LS, GX, LX, and lower than expected sales in IS are a living proof for it. I suspect they will revert to their roots one day.
Not sure where you are getting your numbers, but all Lexus SUVs have been steadily increasing in sales. The GX has been steadily increasing in sales since 2012.
Would love to see some numbers. I live in a medium sized, mostly blue collar city in Ontario and everywhere I turn, I see an RX350 driving by. Both older models and brand spanking new.
They go fast! I just pulled the trigger on an 06 today! Hard to find everything you’re looking for: no rust, good history, not on the other side of the country. I bought site unseen so hopefully I don’t regret it
@@slashtrio With a GX, you can never regret anything. Just maintain good servicing and add some coating underneath your chassis against rust and it'd last forever. The just never die when you care for them.
@@dermotwallace5533 awesome. I have had it for about 18 months or so and it’s been flawless. It’s got 182k but the engine is still smooth and powerful. Solid truck for sure
If you're not willing to put premium fuel in a Lexus like it's called for you should just buy a 4Runner instead :-) I really believe using cheap fuel in this vehicle will be bad for the long term use of the vehicle. I get better MPG and a lot better performance using premium Shell Fuel.
As far as I'm concerned-- the DVD crap could be left out-- when you're out in nature or on a trip- you DON"T NEED DVD crap.. that's for AT HOME. and I don't have kids under 40 so they can do whatever the heck they way- NOT going to "entertain" them any more.. ha.

At 11:03...to funny. I about peed in my pants, I was laughing so hard.
Nice job on the review.
Air suspension raises both front and back ride height. The similar 4Runner only had rear air suspension
Really? The Gen 2 GX only raises the rear...hmmm
@@KirkKreifels 03-09 did front and rear. I've never driven the 460, so I don't know
Actually you are right... I think. It seems to raise the front as well somehow. Does anyone know how that works?
Nope just rear airbags
@@asmith7094 I'm very sure I've seen a video review where the front was raised. Just can't find the particular video now bit I guess, you're right with that.
I would also have POWER brake upgrade done.. (power being the larger- stronger MUCH BETTER braking system)... with that much weight- you NEED that- especially offroad.
Choosing this week to buy an 09 GX 470 or an 08 LX 570. Thoughts?
Both are great!
At 95,000 miles- it's just getting "broken in" good.... and I AGREE- it's the BEST- much better than the newer ones--
The only thing I hate is that 3rd row seat like why are they just bolted on the side like that ?
They fixed that issue in the GX 460. They fold flat into the vehicle.
But much more bed space in the 470 with those “child seats” fully removed.
I have a gx 470 and LOVE IT. Awesome cars, luxury enough to take the wife out and strong enough to pull out a Tacoma our the mud(which I’ve done) lol
Great review I like the lx 570 better but still a good car
Aviation Tutorials what did you like more about the LX570? Buying either one this week
@Jacqueline C It’s a lot like the GX, but it has more leg room, and a bit more of a premium feel, The GX feels more like an extended Rx.
Hope this helps!
I have a 2006 sequoia with 259k same engine and it also runs like new
My 2003 sequoia same engine slightly different also has 260k and also runs like brand new
I wonder how good was the driver seat, every one I have seen for sale has normally this seat very damaged.
I have a 2004 GX 470 love it!!!
I'm really interested to get a 470 GX but I don't know how expensive could maintenance and spare parts are, I have a Bmw5 series but I wanna change by a 4,x4 car and I think Lexus 470 GX is an excellent option. What do you think about maintenance and spare parts are too expensive?
The GX and the LX are the last real Lexus vehicles. Period.
Yes Sir
I just got an 03 GX. Glad I did before they're gone.
Agreed. They’re TANKS.
As a 90s kid, I have an obsession about boxy SUV. Honestly can't stand the sloppy design.
You're not helping my restraint from buying this GX! Congratulations on your awesome Lexus and I wish you many safe miles to come.
wow low miles.
I bought my 2006 GX 470 in Minneapolis last year as well & replaced all the same things you did including the one cv boot! Mine has 100k & absolutely love it, especially in the cold & pushing through the snow. The size is perfect, the sequoi was too big.
I wonder if you can modify the front end with a 2010 body
This seems to have some features of an LX.
I love this vehicle, gx 470,i am 37, would you advice to buy it please reply.
Most definitely. I just got one too.
I just got a 2008 GX470 in white that only has 21000 miles. All it needs is new tires. Do you know where to get touch up paint for the snow white color?
GREAT FIND! I'd got to your local Lexus dealer - to go their parts department OR you can call their parts department and place an order for it.
Will you ever buy a GX470?! Seems like you really want one!
Time will tell! Man I want an LX and a GX 470!
@@KirkKreifels Stop procrastinating and just go for the GX470 mate.
Well not having a heated steering wheel...now that's a deal breaker! 😜
Looks great
Geese. I can't handle all of the criticism in this video..
Yep that's pretty usual for UA-cam.
Hey, I understand the love fest. I'm dreaming of an LX or GX, it's why UA-cam fed me your video...
@@KirkKreifels what's your opinion between a LX470 or GX470? I know gas mileage will be worse in LX, but man is the LX line desirable. And I am not a fan of the rear gate/door on the GX.
They are both awesome. Drive both to see which you like better. I like the LX better, but the GX can be had for much less money
@@KirkKreifels Yeah, a newer, lower mileage gx can be had for less. And are easier to find. A clean, low mileage 2003 or newer lx almost pushes me to a lx570. The GX might be a smart conpromise.
The Manual for my 2006 LX470 says 87 octane or higher.....
Yes. The LX will run on regular. For best performance and long-term engine health, premium is preferred.
Likewise, you can put regular in almost all Lexus vehicles and it should be just fine. The NX turbo would be a bit concerning - unless you lease it :P
@@KirkKreifels NJ
Everyone hating on these are just jealous they don’t have such a reliable vehicle
Fact
Did you just recommend 04 model of GX470?
They rock.
What KW office are you with?
Very nice car brot. ..
Good to see you!
Can you make a vid on 2013 is250? Thanks
I'll put it on my list
17:14 I'm willing to bet in 9 years the GX you are driving will be worth more than that Raptor.
Subbed!
I agree the new ones feel outdated today, but this gx470 feels like a brand new car and is a heck of a bargain today!
Would love to see some numbers. I live in a medium sized, mostly blue collar city in Ontario and everywhere I turn, I see an RX350 driving by. Both older models and brand spanking new.
Hard to find 2009 one. Almost impossible
Does GX460 and GX470 really require premium fuel?
Yes. All Lexus V8s require premium fuel. It might run on regular, but I wouldn't want to take my chances.
Been running my 07 gx on regular for 6 years. No issues.
87 is fine on my 2006 lx 470 per the owners manual.
I just brought a GX460 2019, this is the question in my mind for a long time. I am using regular now, but I will switch to premium.
If you're not willing to put premium fuel in a Lexus like it's called for you should just buy a 4Runner instead :-) I really believe using cheap fuel in this vehicle will be bad for the long term use of the vehicle. I get better MPG and a lot better performance using premium Shell Fuel.
Story about the nametag?
Kinda looks like a 4th gen 4runner.
Take it to Hennessey in Sealy Texas I Wonder How Much Horse Power they Can Get Out of it although I Would Prefer More Torque than Horse Power .
301 HP and 329 Torque
As far as I'm concerned-- the DVD crap could be left out-- when you're out in nature or on a trip- you DON"T NEED DVD crap.. that's for AT HOME. and I don't have kids under 40 so they can do whatever the heck they way- NOT going to "entertain" them any more.. ha.
is it still for sale? How much?
It sold quickly. Sorry!
Found an '08 with 68k 😁...great review
Congratulations!
What was the asking price?
Awesome, yeah what did you get it for?
@@theVRpilot 15k from a Lexus dealer! It's worth so much more
amazing! I picked up an 08 4runner with 52k miles two weeks ago for only 8500. minor issues but one owner, clean title, man am I feeling lucky. excited for you too!!
Nice
so good
This can't be a 2009 with a tape player
lol
😂
The junk space sucks in this vehicle
explain please?
Justin West I meant the trunk space. If you use all 3 row seats there is literally no junk space
@@kevintillack1396 just hitch a trailer and you haul a house ;)
sell it to me please!
The backseats are USELESS weight as far as I'm concerned-- I'd never put anyone back there- kids or anyone else. I'd sell those- or give them away..
