I guess you've never been to the UK then. Lot's of old Landies on the road. As an example, my dads farm series 2A went round the clock twice before the odometer broke in 1988, and its still hauling bales and feed.
My 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser currently has 950,000 miles with original engine. I am still driving it from San Francisco, CA to Houston, Tx every weekend. It is amazing and super reliable Toyota SUV.
I'm a Lexus guy for life, on my third one now, 2008 IS250, 2010 RX350, 2017 GX460, I can never go back to anything else and will probably do the GX from here on out, I've always loved the 4Runners, especially what's out now and the GX is all that and more, to me it's utter perfection
travel78 I drove a 2017 RX as a loaner before I got the 2017 GX and I have to admit it was pretty smooth and peppy as well. The GX is a tad more sluggish at first but if you romp on the V8 you can get some great power out of it that overall I feel is more/better than the RX. As for the ride, I've always been a fan of heavier vehicles with higher riding heights and thicker tires for an overall smoother ride. I might be biased, but when I'm riding country roads the smoothness, sway, and acceleration of the GX in my opinion is perfect for me and I feel at the end of the day better than the RX. To be fair, the RX is a very mean value and it's neck and neck probably to most people.
Buy a Lexus if you want luxury and reliability. Everyone should know that by now. Yes, MPG sucks but for the quality and the fact you don't spend too much on repairs should makes up for it IMO.
@@ISwearDownOnMeNansGrave That is not bad for an SUV. The V8 Explorer of that year competes with it and is lucky to average 14-15. The V8's from 09-10 may start to compete in quality with the lexus.
Greg I couldn't agree with you more. I just bought a 2013 Lexus GX460 with 89K miles on it and it is impeccable. Everything works, inside and outside look great and I couldn't be happier. The ride is a little rougher than my 2003 BMW X5 3.0i but its a hoot to drive. As for the BMW, what a money pit. Roughly 173K miles on it and everything that could go wrong has i.e. transfer case, oil leaks, etc etc etc. Thank you for the excellent videos!
I once owned a 1982 Peugeot 205 diesel with 410,000 miles - it was formerly the driver recovery vehicle at Silverstone Circuit, and that car took a thrashing which would have killed ANY Toyota.
I have a mercedes e class from that era with 150k, I know someone with a 4runner from that era with 350k, and I think the Toyota is more reliable and certainly way cheaper to repair.
We replaced our Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2009 with a Certified Pre-Owned 2007 GX470 that only had one owner and only 26K miles on it. It was pristine and we got a great deal on it. I had never owned a Lexus before, but I assure that after owning this SUV for the last decade, I will sing the praises of Lexus to anyone and everyone. Our GX has taken us everywhere in comfort and style. Snow, mud, sand, loose terrain, freeways, around town, you name it, it does it! Best things about it is how quiet it is on the freeway, the comfort of the seats, the power, and its reliability. In the 120K+ miles we've put on it, the only thing we've had to replace was the alternator. That's it. Nothing else but regular maintenance, tires and brakes. A great mod that I did was I installed a gas strut on the rear door, so it opens on its own and stays open when I need it to. It was simple to do, here's the video I referenced: ua-cam.com/video/X-n0HpRIOTk/v-deo.html I have friends who ask why I don't trade it in for a new SUV. They say, "that thing's 12+ years old, get something more modern". No way. I'm convinced that anything else I buy will just let me down. Besides, my GX has been paid off for 6 years. If it aint broke, don't fix it. I'm a Lexus believer! P.S. It tows like a champ too!
Similar story - we picked up a 2007 in 2009 with 31K on it. It's now about to become my 16 year old daughters vehicle. And if she ever gives it back to me, I'll drive it forever. It's been a bullet-proof, 100% reliable vehicle. Best buying decision I've ever made.
I bought a 2006 Toyota Sequoia with over 300,000 miles on it based on these videos. I used the tips in his how to buy a high mileage vehicle video and I'm so glad I did. The one I purchased also had over 40 dealer service reports on the Carfax runs and drives like new. The only thing I've done so far is change the automatic transmission fluid ( there is no such thing as lifetime fluid) and added a new set of tires. Greg really knows his stuff. Thanks for the good videos and great advice, keep up the good work.
After watching this video, I had to go out into my garage and hug/slobber all over my 2007 GX470! I have 135K on it right now and I absolutely love my GX. The BEST vehicle I've ever owned and I will be keeping this one until it is totally spent. Bought it in 2011 with 40K on it and today it still feels exactly the same. The only maintenance I've done was the 100K timing belt and had to replace the alternator last year. Other than that it's been PERFECT. I do all of my own maintenance, run synthetic oil, royal purple in the t-case and f/r differentials, and also drain/fill the tranny fluid every 30K. Great video!
I just saw this video, and I own a 2005 GX470 with 170K miles on it (as of 2020). I've owned it since 2013 and have roamed backwood trails, driven up to high altitude ski resorts, and pushed the vast highways of Montana for close to 8 years now. The only maintenance I've had to deal with are oil changes, replacing the running lights, the alternator wearing out after 140k miles, and a few hail storms (which were quite unavoidable.) This review is spot on. Lot's of "big boy" features when it comes to towing, driving off road, and hosting passengers in a luxury setting. My buddies are still "wowed" by the GX when I take them on road trips or golf outings. The GPS is of vintage "2005" tech stock, but the console interface still plays well with the climate and audio controls. As a side note, the cassette deck slot can be converted to a nice mounting platform for modern day devices. Add to that the fact that it was ahead of it's time as far as furnishing additional outlets for multiple power connections (it even has an AV "fork" outlet in the back.) This vehicle has been a dream, and it still looks damn sexy! I owned a Lexus GS300 sedan before this and although I have been satisfied with both, the GX470 is king. A muscular 4.7 liter V8 on a mid-sized SUV chassis with: tow controls, 2nd gear start, air ride suspension preferences with rear axle height controls, toggle enabled traction assist., toggle controlled differential settings (4WD vs. AWD) with an additional stick that lets you dictate between 4 hi and 4 lo... there is even a switch that engages a downhill engine brake... all things you rarely see on any sort of mid-sized utility vehicle to this day without forking out 70-90k. It's like driving a modern semi truck packaged into a mid-sized SUV. This vehicle is still a rare bird and is worth a serious look... Top quality indeed! (Sound system is fabulous, in case you are worried about that!) :)
Thank you for this video, i dont know how many times i might have seen this video before I decided to get my own. Bought 07 with 150k miles on it yesterday, couldn’t be happier with the purchase, i am enjoying the ride 😊👍
@@musaratak only thing i did replace was struts which costed abt 1300$. It was not critical but i felt ride to be bit bumpy sometimes so i had it checked out and my mechanic friend recommended to replace it. Other than that it runs very smooth. I will keep it for years to come :) . Go for it, you would be happy.
By far this is the most reliable and durable vehicle we have every owned. Amazing how well it has lasted, and still is very capable offroad, which we do often.
I just picked up an 06 GX with about 140,000 miles on it for $11,200 OTD. Best used car purchase I've ever made. This thing really is a high quality luxury beast that is affordable. There is also a number off-road communities dedicated to the GX due to it's similarity to the 4runner.
Fuckkkkkk Toyota/Lexus!!! This shit has almost 300k and the interior looks like it's still in the freaking showroom!!! I'm online looking for one now 😂😂😂
Suave House I tell you. My 03 has 175kmi and looks like new! I was just thinking about that yesterday. Headliner and all is perfect. Dash got warranty-replaced by Lexus (in 2016 at 140k mi) after it cracked. Yessssss some extended warranty deal or w/e and I paid $0
lot of consumer product rating agencies have given the most reliable vehicle award to the GX. It's a tank, everyone know that, but thanks for the reassurance.
in response to "Joeys Cleaning Lady" and "Jonathan Nauck" This car does not have KDSS. It was an option in 2004, but they did not put a trailer hitch receiver in the bumper of the KDSS models. They did that configuration, because they were not sure how it would affect the integrity of the kit. I know, because I have had a 2004 w KDSS, since new. That option was on something like 1 out of 10 trucks, or less. The system works admirably. It corners more flatly on the roadways, and gives greater articulation of the opposing wheels in off-road driving. 145,000 miles and climbing.
These cars are amazing- the engines have been around for years, and are totally reliable. I love my RX 450h, but am seriously considering trading it in on one of these! Nice job on the review buddy.
I own a 08 Sport model. Was looking at a LR3 or LR4 (wins the style contest for sure), but really loved the LC's for reliability. I knew the LX's true form. So when I found out the GX was also a masked LC, well that settled it for me. It took months to find a decent Sport model. A good Land Cruiser was one of my "grail" vehicles, I now own one, and I LOVE it.
I remember when I drove one of these. It's so inconspicuous looking you would never how good it actually is just by looking at it. The engine felt so strong and smooth and the interior was so good and luxurious and the ride was so good I was beyond impressed. It drives better then some new cars. I still want one only thing I would update are the tiny wheels. This car is a great used buy.
Perfect used buy and Lexus even warranties them used. I got a 100k warranty on top of the 141,000 miles our truck already had. I'm planning to build mine to overland. So far it's been absolute perfection. And best of all it's so easy to work on. Just like my SC400. My Acura ironically enough is more difficult to work on.
Its timeless too. I dont feel like it is 13 years old. I think the back is sharper than my 2019. but the 2019 460 nose is tough looking. Love both of them
@@shazbot199 Yeah the plugs on the rear bank for the TL were a bitch to change. I didn't even attempt the timing belt, had a buddy who's an Acura tec do it. Wouldn't mind owning another TL someday. First love for sure!
I bought one after this video.. awesome SUV. Mine is a baby at 134k.. I replaced the original rear air bags with coils because one was leaking. Other than that this thing is a beast so solid. Only issue is now I got to find something bigger since I now have 3 kids in car seats and it's a bit tight.. my wife is crying now and regrets having a 3rd kid that is how much she loves this SUV.
The GX470/Prado was also the basis for the FJ Cruiser, which is why they are so tough and valued on he used market. The GX is such a underrated platform.
I’ve had Toyota’s since the 80’s, now I have a 2004 LX 470 with 215,000 miles (bought with 20K miles) and a 2018 GX 460. Zero issues with either. Dependable and built like tanks.
Daniel Pan depends on which type of gas you use. Premium gas gets you more miles but costs more. The suv has the power to pass any big truck easily and you feel safe on the roads. Highly recommended.
This person probably wore gloves and long sleeves driving this truck. When you touch a vehicle you finesse it like it has feelings lol great video as usual
You're exactly right I see people all day specially Asians driving their car with a sun hat on long sleeve on right arm and gloves on both hands and stopping at lights 15 ft behind the last person this does not go to Toyota quality it goes to owners of the vehicle
@Heywood Jablowme can a front loader drop a bucket full of anything into its bed? No? Then it is not a truck. Sorry. Trucks are work machines. This is a car.
I must say this video played a large part in our recent purchase of an 04 with 329,000 miles on it. I just kept saying to myself is this a wise , and or logical decision ? Ran a Carfax , and it was stellar start to finish. All dealer , 3rd timing belt , and oil changes and recommended maintenance galore. Drove from one side of Michigan to the other to get it , and have not been disappointed yet. With in 3 weeks of purchase , had it up north camping , and on the trails. Did wonderfully , and still no squeaks or rattles to speak of. We were on the fence about such a higher mileage vehicle , but after seeing this my girlfriend was on board immediately! It is after all her new daily driver , and she loves it to pieces. Thanks again Car Angel , we love our new used GX.
Awesome video I also own 04 GX470 that has over 300,000 miles and it's still looking great running great it's the best SUV I ever driven I highly recommend this vehicle to anybody.
i dont know why are nt there much people that admits that toyota has become much better than german auto makers, especially when it comes to SUVs.... thank you
Way more plastic in German cars. Take a look at the cooling systems in most BMWs (which is why they fail so much) and even things like the transmission pans on BMWs, Benz's and Audi's...all Plastic.
Belagoun omar ......True true true!I am a European living in California, and I use to be a fan of the German car manufacturers, not anymore!I own 2 japonese cars and one American!
Alex Koch Wrong. Can't have better reliability without better design. Better design leads to better safety. Comfort is subjective and Toyotas are known for comfort.
Alex Koch Cross-stitched leather is your bench mark? You get that in a Kia these days LOL. Volvo used to be owned by Ford and is now owned by a Chinese company lmao. Mercedes sold 2 million, Toyota sold 7 MILLION and is the world's BIGGEST automobile manufacturer. Come back when you actually know what you're talking about.
I have the exact same vehicle... love it . I take it to the national forest every fall and it’s a beast! Off-roading, no problem...such a great vehicle!
In Australia I have a Toyota Prado and it's the same car with a smaller motor. It has a 4L v6 motor. I regularly tow a 5000 pound trailer with it in the Australian outback. It is a wonderful car. Very comfortable and the reliability we need in the desert. It has done 200000 miles with regular servicing and never let me down.
We bought a new Colorado(Prado) in 2002 and its never broken down, never! It needed new batteries last year and and annual service but it still drives like new and quality is outstanding.
Thank you for your EXCELLENT review. It helped me decide between a 2003 Chevy Tahoe Z71 4x4 with 167K miles and a 2004 Toyota GX470 with 287K miles, both vehicles in pristine condition. I guess it goes without saying which one I chose...
I have a 2009 with 144,000. It's really been a great vehicle. I drove the Toyota Prado version sold in the Middle East for years while working in Kuwait. They got run hard in off road desert conditions regularly and were extremely reliable.
I’m still coming back to these videos to advise my friends about how good these trucks are! My LX470 just turned 292,000mi and I drained and filled the trans and did engine oil and filter. It’s not the best example but it’s still quite smooth! And I get 13mpg pushing it over 80mph on the highway. So 15mpg actually sounds great. Now I’m helping my friend find a reasonable 1st gen Sequoia 4WD
The 4Runner is sold as the Hilux Surf in many other markets. The GX/Prado, 4Runner, Tacoma/Hilux, FJ all share the same chassis. The Sequoia is built on the Tundra Chassis which is only North American market.
The Tacoma does not share the same frame. It is an open channel Dana Corp frame that has corrosion issues. The 4runner gx and fj are on the prado platform. Not sure on the international hilux but it is fully boxed not c channel like the taco.
Thank you for this review. I’ve wanted a LC for the longest time and after watching your video think I may look into the GX because it is a bit smaller has a lot more luxury to it and from what I have seen has a lower price tag as well. Keep up the good work!
I own one and it's been very reliable, almost boring, lol. Only had a few minor issues over the years, bad a/c relay, door speaker foam wore out, light switch bulbs burned out, dashboard started cracking but was covered under extended warranty by Lexus I agree, everything in mine still works, engine still runs and idles like new after 130k miles.
That's why you mod it if it's boring. The reliability is great when you're a couple hundred miles in the back country and need your truck to work without missing a beat! Its the only one I feel safe in.
Toyota, the old veteran that soldiers on. The only issue owning these vehicles is that they last too long and you are left with an aging exterior design.. Also It looks GMC was inspired by this vehicle for the Envoy, they copied the whole rear end design!
My thoughts, too. I don't want to own or drive any car or truck built like a tank. Damn, what a back-breaking ride :) And I once stood on the deck of an Abrams that was literally buried in mud right up to the bottom edge of the turret, so wet-ground off-roading can be a problem for tanks.
My experience with my 2004 GX470 matches this reviewers. I purchased mine new on October 1st 2004 and currently have 87,000 miles on mine. It still looks, runs and rides like new. All service has been performed by my local Lexus dealer. I have the oil and filter changed and the tires rotated every 5,000 miles. I have exclusively used Mobil 1 full synthetic oil since the first oil change. The engine has never used a drop of oil. I did have a leak in the water pump at 50,000 miles and had them replace the engine timing belt at the same time they replaced the water pump, since they are adjacent to each other. The batteries last almost exactly 5 years so I'm on my third. The air suspension has never needed work. I had some preventive maintenance done about a month ago replacing the transmission fluid as well as that in the brakes and front and rear differentials. I also had them replace the spark plugs. I have had the serpentine belt and radiator hoses replaced as well, just as a preventive maintenance item not because of any problem. I plan on keeping my GX for the long haul, it's been a fantastic vehicle to own.
Scott Trindl Hi, great to hear somebody else has an '04 with low mileage, I've got same, 04 GX, 66,000 miles, only new rear brakes so far, I used to use Lexus for maintenance, then switched to local independent shop. Today my tachometer went out, needle stuck at 0, please let me know if you have heard anything about this, from what I've learned so far, the gauge cluster board fails frequently with Lexus-- However not so much with the GX. Hoping for easy aka inexpensive fix, Lexus just wants to replace board for $1000+!! :( Thanks
You've got even lower miles than I do. I never had any issues with the any of the gauges at all, so can't give you information on that particular problem. The service from my Lexus dealer has been the best I have ever experienced with any vehicle...by far. The vehicle that I had before the GX was a 2004 Cadillac CTS. I traded that in on my GX after 6 months of ownership with 4,700 miles on the odometer . That car had far more problems in those six months of ownership than my Lexus has had in 14 years. My Cadillac dealer wasn't particularly interested in fixing any of those problems either. Neither was Cadillac Corporate. On my last visit to the Cadillac dealer, their service manager told me "it would take us too much time to track down all of those problems, you just have to live with them". I told him, no I don't, and drove down the street to my Lexus dealer and traded it in on the GX. Best decision I ever made. I did replace the brake pads, front and rear...the front at about 60,000 miles and the rear about 85,000. I consider that just normal maintenance.
The GX-470 is built on the Toyota Prado frame, same as the 4-Runner. I own a 2004 Toyota 4Runner, and it has 214000 miles on it. Like this 470, my 4Runner also is 100 percent reliable, blessed with the same V8 in the later model GX (much better fuel economy), and everything on my 4Runner works "as new". My wife and mother-in law both drive much newer cars - a 2015 Dodge Caravan and 2017 Ford Edge. The Edge has about 54000 miles on it and runs quite well, but the ride quality of my 4Runner is on a much higher level. Any trade away from my 4Runner or this 470 will necessarily be a trade down in quality. I drive mine hard. For several years we lived in the top of a large hill in south Texas. The road to our home was unpaved dirt and rock, and you had to drive down through a dry creek bed to start the ascent up, which was very steep, twisty and very rocky. Tires would spin making the turns on this road. Often, visitors surrendered in fear and would not even attempt the drive up. But my 4Runner handled it with ease, and for years, with never a single malfunction or even protest. These two vehicles are almost certainly the best made, most reliable vehicles made in the history of automobiles.
Nice to see the GX getting some love, but there are a few glaring errors in this review. First off, timing belt is due at 90K not 100K. 2. Not all GX's have the kinetic dynamic suspension system (kdss) it's only on sport models, which this one isn't. 3. Adjusting the "ride height" is only for up to 19mph, at which time it automatically adjusts to the "normal" position. These trucks don't get the attention they deserve, so thank you for a mostly accurate and appreciative review.
Matthew M ... perhaps. Mine has 175k miles and never had timing belt replaced. As he said, it’s built like a tank. Last 5 years I put only gas and oil and it runs like new
I'm replacing the ball joints on my 1995 LS-400. The quality of that vehicle is superb. My E63 amg has wonderful qualities to it as well, however its complicated and has many failure points. Lexus doesn't give you extreme sportiness like Mercedes can, however they build their cars to outlast everything else on the road. Great video!
I really enjoyed your video. I also have 2004 GX, same color with 145K. I so love this vehicle! The other manufacturers can't hold a candle to Lexus. You neglected to demonstrate the interior lighting on the center column and the door handles at night. So classy! You could of made it up that hill if you really tried! haha.
The ML 430 is good if you baby it. The Lexus is good even if you dont. These transfer cases and trans can be a booger at high miles and the airbags on the rear go out at higher miles too. But what car doesnt need a few things at 200k to get it up to 350k and beyond.
@@pacflip10 I am trading my IS 350 in and wondering what to get. I am all over the map. This made the list though but it always does when I look for new car. 2014 IS 350, 2016 RX 350, 1987 944TURBO, 1970 BMW 2002 S54 swap Trading IS 350 for 2016 Camaro SS or 2016 Challenger R/T but part of me wants to get a 2013 (pre spindle grill) GX. The new ones have not grown on me like the RX body style has.
we have a 2004, purchased in 2005, now with over 398k miles. All original, just timing belt, oil, plugs. It is not as fun as our X5s, but they are different animals.
I bought a 2005 gx470 (at 92 K miles) on October 2018 after watching this ad. Brake booster Accumulator VSC module failed last Month. Parts : $ 3450, $ 4900 installed. Timing belt, water pump, drive belt, tensioners : $ 1900 . Maintaining this car is very expensive I'd hardly recommend this car to anyone. Maybe good for the first 90K, but expensive maintenance and repairs after that. Any GM car can accomplish that too for lower price... Oh Mark Levinson amp is dead too another $800 Do not buy any expensive Toyota or Lexus.
I had a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum and traded in for 2006 Lexus GX470 which later i traded in for another 2009 Lexus GX470 and never look back. I love it the GX470. Very easy to do DIY maintenance, spark plug fairly easy to change, oil change is a breeze, driver shaft easy to lubricate, transfer case and differential oil easy to change as well. Fantastic truck!
@@crazyone1067 minor issues with age. I ha and a cracked manifold, my radio had an issue which allowed me to install a backup camera and new Kenwood display, and the headlights. Other than that, some weather stripping needs replacing however mine is 16 years old and a tank.
I just purchased a 2004 Lexus GX470 with 125,000 miles on it. It has been serviced at the Lexus dealer so the CarFax showed lots of service history. The only issue have discovered is the fuel gauge is intermittent . I didn't see this video until after I purchased the GX. Thanks for the "COOL" and encouraging video. I have an 02 LS430 that we love so the GX was a no-brainer I can't believe that the rear door jam still had the protective covering on it. I'll bet the original owner has plastic on their furniture like on "Everybody Loves Raymond". :)
The GX470 is a great platform! Everyday more and more companies are making aftermarket parts for it to make it that much more capable on and offroad. Great Video!
Just came across the video. I have the exact one. It was gifted to me by most generous brother and his wife when they replaced it in 2011 with an Audi wagon. Needless to say I think I got the better part of the deal. They mourn the loss!! I love my car and it’s every bit as good as you said. It’s just shy of 200k miles
Thanks car angel. This is the best ad for the car that lexus never even did. There are next to no commercials for this car. Only a few, mostly when it was first introduced is all i can find on youtube. I just got a white one, highway mileage, all records and convinced dealer down from 12900 to 7999 by it being ignored on lot and overplaying its maintenance which dealer didnt eralize was all available on lexus website. Its lack of public keenness makes it a great way to get a great deal. Id never get a deal like taht on closest v8 4runner of same year. 😁👍i folllowed this video to a t it seems lol
That's right. I forgot that the 4Runner, Land cruiser and GX all used the same Prado chassis in 2004. But bro, they are rebadged 4Runners, not rebadged Land Cruisers. The 4Runner is Toyotas development platform, much like the Civic is Hondas development platform. The 4Runner gets the best new engineering first, and that is subsequently distributed to the Land Cruisers and GX platforms. It's the 4Runner that's King :) The most valuable vehicle in Toyota's fleet.
It's the best used deal because the original buyers usually kept them and kept them well. I just bought mine from my aunt and uncle, who were the original owners. 2006/300000 KM. No rust. Just has a couple small foibles. Couldn't be happier.
Still in love with the look and reliability of my 08 GX470 after 9 years of owning it! I paid $52K for it in 2008. Only 63K miles. Gas was $5/gallon in 2008 but the price has been much lower in recent years which is a huge bonus us, GX470 owners.
I just bought one too. Traded in my 2013 Honda CRZ 6SPD for it. I was told great stories about it too, but the 08 I bought later needed two front catalytic converters. $1000.00. Other than that I changed the timing belt. It has 193k on it. It's a 3rd car so I'll be garage most of the time.
My mom had a GX470 and at 150,000 our air suspension was still working perfectly, we got rid of the car because of the mileage and she got an RX instead
We bought a 2006 GX470 in April last year with 150000 miles on it. Airbags and air shocks had been replaced a few times already. The suspension is not working properly all of the time. Thinking about doing a conversion back to basics. Love it though. Love the V8 power.
I recently got a 2004 4Runner (Prado to all you out of the US) with 182,000 miles on it. It drives like it's brand new. Not a rattle or a squeak anywhere. And it's not like the previous owner was super gentle either. My buddy from OZ remarked "Nice mate. She's just broke in and ready for the dirty stuff". He's not kidding. Despite some issues of cleanliness from the previous owner you'd think it was brand new.
Known issues: Air suspension failure/buggy Drive shaft binding at stop Dash board crack (hopefully you were lucky to get the new one from lexus) Blizzard Pearl white paint peeling! (Ours has about 25% paint peeled off to the primer) this is a known issue that lexus won't acknowledge. The full time all wheel drive is nice but if you enjoy a spirited drive through the mountains WATCH OUT, the traction control system will apply the brakes in a sharp turn!! When the brakes are applied in a turn at high speed this STRAIGHTENS you out! No good when you are on a steep mountainside. That said I just did the front diff, rear diff, and transfer case fluid. And will probably do the timing belt again in 50k or so. Will keep it and strip the paint down and re-spray, but not before I park this $50k car with paint peeling off in front of a lexus dealer a few Saturdays in a row.
I own a 2008 GX470 and a 2004 LS430. Best of both worlds in their own ways. Lovely vehicles. Bravo Toyota for giving these two legendary vehicles to the world.
If you're looking for a Land Rover/Range Rover with similar mileage, check the junkyard.
Land Rovers generally don't even see 120k before the scrapyard, and the depreciation ....

I guess you've never been to the UK then. Lot's of old Landies on the road. As an example, my dads farm series 2A went round the clock twice before the odometer broke in 1988, and its still hauling bales and feed.
Haha Thanks for making me laugh, you are sooo right
can't beat Toyota's reliability.
My 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser currently has 950,000 miles with original engine. I am still driving it from San Francisco, CA to Houston, Tx every weekend. It is amazing and super reliable Toyota SUV.
Are you kidding me!? That’s amazing. Also amazing that you drive that every week haha
I have had similar expirience with my landcruisers , nothing is more reliable and i mean nothing !!!
Series 80 is da shit !!!
Just saw a video ls400 with 989,000 back in June 18’
Just broke half mill on my 98 Cherokee
People don't like giving Toyota credit but they are the best. I'm a huge lexus fan.
MrRanvic I'm a huge fan of 4runner , mdx and the yukon
Love the Lexus, the Tacoma and the 4 Runners..and maybe the Camry...althought the Honda Accords are sweet high mileage quality cars as well.
Agreed, I owned a LS400, a LS430 and now own a LS460L...don't think I want any other type of car as a daily driver.
I have the 2005 version, and it's incredible. recommend for anyone.
I'm looking at a 2005 with under 100K on it. Are there any expensive fixes that are common? The video said the timing belt should be changed.
Watch out of the secondary air injection pump $2k fix at dealer! You can get a kit for like $250 to by pass it.
@@Bada_Boom78 smooth when the air suspension works
Lexus... the Best Ride Ever!
So it's 2yrs since your post..hows has your 2005 been? reliability? issues ? etc
Buy a Lexus if you want luxury and reliability. Everyone should know that by now.
Yes, MPG sucks but for the quality and the fact you don't spend too much on repairs should makes up for it IMO.
CaideN heyyyy. Never thought about it that way. My 03 GX now has 175k mi and still runs like new.
My wife drives one and knowing that it will get her to and from work day after day, rain or shine or snow. The 18.5 mpg is worth the peace of mind
I have a 1998 toyota 4 runner... It has 330,000 plus miles on it and I love my truck.
Dana T.
I once owned a 1982 Peugeot 205 diesel with 410,000 miles - it was formerly the driver recovery vehicle at Silverstone Circuit, and that car took a thrashing which would have killed ANY Toyota.
Jason M thanx...
Dana Terrell is it still running!?
@@ChrisStedman93 yes keep the updates coming
P.S. It tows like a champ too!
timing belt
Similar story - we picked up a 2007 in 2009 with 31K on it. It's now about to become my 16 year old daughters vehicle. And if she ever gives it back to me, I'll drive it forever. It's been a bullet-proof, 100% reliable vehicle. Best buying decision I've ever made.
I had a Land Rover Discovery... Once the engine hit 100k miles, the SUV was basically useless. I love this Lexus though.
Great video!

going to replace my alternator on my
2002 lexus rx300 265k miles amazing vehicle
I owned BMW and Benz before darn money pit
Willy, those are the same small (belt is expensive, but planned) maintenance needs i had for my very luxurious LS430 in over 240,000 miles. Enjoy.
willytrouble88 P
willytrouble88 wonder how much it costs for the timing belt service. Do we need to replace the water pump at the same time. Thanks
Yes, and the package is usually about $1000, including the water pump.
Add to that the fact that it was ahead of it's time as far as furnishing additional outlets for multiple power connections (it even has an AV "fork" outlet in the back.)
This vehicle has been a dream, and it still looks damn sexy!
LEXUS is the best luxury brand

By far this is the most reliable and durable vehicle we have every owned. Amazing how well it has lasted, and still is very capable offroad, which we do often.
I just picked up an 06 GX with about 140,000 miles on it for $11,200 OTD. Best used car purchase I've ever made. This thing really is a high quality luxury beast that is affordable. There is also a number off-road communities dedicated to the GX due to it's similarity to the 4runner.

Lexus GX is actually a rebadged Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

lot of consumer product rating agencies have given the most reliable vehicle award to the GX.
It's a tank, everyone know that, but thanks for the reassurance.
I am always elated when I see these things. They are just built so well!
does this have KDSS?
+Joeys Cleaning Lady KDSS was only available on the sport package and are very hard to find. I think they all have the dark grey maple interior trim.
in response to "Joeys Cleaning Lady" and "Jonathan Nauck"
This car does not have KDSS. It was an option in 2004, but they did not
put a trailer hitch receiver in the bumper of the KDSS models. They
did that configuration, because they were not sure how it would affect
the integrity of the kit. I know, because I have had a 2004 w KDSS,
since new. That option was on something like 1 out of 10 trucks, or
less. The system works admirably. It corners more flatly on the
roadways, and gives greater articulation of the opposing wheels in
off-road driving. 145,000 miles and climbing.
I bought the same vehicle October 2003 (2004 model). 218,000 miles, probably 30% highway, and it continues to be a fantastic vehicle.
Whats the miles per gallon?
These cars are amazing- the engines have been around for years, and are totally reliable. I love my RX 450h, but am seriously considering trading it in on one of these! Nice job on the review buddy.
Keep the RX for Monday-Friday and drive the GX on the weekend.
What's amazing is that I'm watching this in 2022 and this thing is now a full-on cult classic for all the reasons mentioned in this video.
I prefer the J100 Land Cruiser. These are oddly tall and narrow.
Its timeless too. I dont feel like it is 13 years old. I think the back is sharper than my 2019. but the 2019 460 nose is tough looking. Love both of them

YourCarAngel, Thanks for the review. Your inspired review made me to decide to go for Lexus. I bought 2010 Lexus GX460 this week. Love it.
Daniel Pan depends on which type of gas you use. Premium gas gets you more miles but costs more. The suv has the power to pass any big truck easily and you feel safe on the roads. Highly recommended.

Alex Koch Wrong. Can't have better reliability without better design. Better design leads to better safety. Comfort is subjective and Toyotas are known for comfort.

Good to hear somebody in Australia is driving one without a dirty Diesel engine.
I've always wanted one of these but the fuel mileage sucks. The previous owner spent approximately another 48k in gas
opichocal with the money you save in repairs I think is worth it, I prefer reliability over mpg
Lethal Bacon that's because the emissions standards are much higher in North America vs Europe and the rest of the world.
Igniz peace of mind too
opichocal well you don't buy a vehicle this big for gas mileage it's simple. If you can afford this vehicle, you can afford the gas..
Diesel is cheaper here too. It's the stupid EPA emissions. European emissions should be sufficient.
And one year later, we need an update. How's this beast treating ya? Did u hit 300k yet??
I have a 2009 with 144,000. It's really been a great vehicle. I drove the Toyota Prado version sold in the Middle East for years while working in Kuwait. They got run hard in off road desert conditions regularly and were extremely reliable.
I am going to buy one for sure next month..these vehicles last forever
I’m still coming back to these videos to advise my friends about how good these trucks are! My LX470 just turned 292,000mi and I drained and filled the trans and did engine oil and filter. It’s not the best example but it’s still quite smooth! And I get 13mpg pushing it over 80mph on the highway. So 15mpg actually sounds great. Now I’m helping my friend find a reasonable 1st gen Sequoia 4WD
GX is Prado, LX is land cruiser. 4runner and sequoia are not for international market, so they cannot be compared directly
The 4Runner is sold as the Hilux Surf in many other markets. The GX/Prado, 4Runner, Tacoma/Hilux, FJ all share the same chassis. The Sequoia is built on the Tundra Chassis which is only North American market.
You are wrong about the 4runner...i owned one in Africa-kenya but it's called hilux surf..
The Tacoma does not share the same frame. It is an open channel Dana Corp frame that has corrosion issues. The 4runner gx and fj are on the prado platform. Not sure on the international hilux but it is fully boxed not c channel like the taco.

There were more than a dozen GX470's at overland expo west. Including mine.
Has the warranty expired yet for the cracked dash?
If the dash started cracking that's because you're lazy and don't look after your shit. If you can afford a Lexus you can afford some armorall.
@@Noises If you have to park outside in the sun a lot, armorall is not going to do jack shit.
Toyota, the old veteran that soldiers on. The only issue owning these vehicles is that they last too long and you are left with an aging exterior design.. Also It looks GMC was inspired by this vehicle for the Envoy, they copied the whole rear end design!
“There’s no squeaks or rattles. This thing is built like a tank.” Clearly, this guy has never spent time in a M1 Abrams. Haha
lol
My thoughts, too. I don't want to own or drive any car or truck built like a tank. Damn, what a back-breaking ride :) And I once stood on the deck of an Abrams that was literally buried in mud right up to the bottom edge of the turret, so wet-ground off-roading can be a problem for tanks.
More like a Bank Vault. Tank...not so much.
LOL
Back in the 1970’s 4wds were considered tractors with more comfy seats. I’m glad he didn’t refer to the Lexus as a comfy tractor haha.

Hi, great to hear somebody else has an '04 with low mileage, I've got same, 04 GX, 66,000 miles, only new rear brakes so far, I used to use Lexus for maintenance, then switched to local independent shop.
Thanks
In Asia, it's called Land cruiser Prado, but diesel tho
Same in Africa....landcruiser prado turbo diesel
in australia as well. i think its only in america where they sell it with a V8 and call it a lexus gx
That is an ignorant and clueless statement, guy, but I agree that Toyota quality and reliability are unsurpassed by most car companies.

GX 470s don't fucking die man. Best SUV ever built.
Rubbish, the 79 series is the best.
Bought an 05’ with 234000 Kms. Thanks for the tip Mr Car Angle! Love it and will keep as long as possible
these cars will last forever
Also button is not a LSD. It's a center lock diff.
You forgot his skinny pants and long girl hair
Matthew M ... perhaps. Mine has 175k miles and never had timing belt replaced. As he said, it’s built like a tank. Last 5 years I put only gas and oil and it runs like new
Matthew my GX has 175,000 and never changed the timing belt. I’ll probably change it at 200,000 miles.
U better change it before the water pump seal goes.
These are the best off road trucks in the world!
Great video brother... I have an 05 with armor!
"Better than a tank"
that's what I'm talking about!
Good video! I've got the same exact one/color. This truck is bullet proof and drives like a dream.
149k and my 470 drives and looks like new. Unbelievable! Best ever!
So classy! You could of made it up that hill if you really tried! haha.
Scott wonder if yours still has the original air suspension. Thanks
@@tedlu008 From what I've read, it does go out after awhile and you can replace them with Bilstein shocks
I'm on my second GX470. Best all around SUV I have ever owned.
It’s also called a landcrusier 120 prado in other countries
A little bit different. LC120 only has 2.7 Litre L4 or 4.0 V6 gasoline. Personally thinking Prado looks better.
I had a KZJ120 with 3.0 Diesel D4.D. Looks similar to the Lexus, and very comfortable too. Now a have (again) a 70 series HZJ74.. wow..
The most reliable and stress free car ever!! Hands down. !!! Mercedes gave me headaches year after year
The ML 430 is good if you baby it.
The Lexus is good even if you dont.
These transfer cases and trans can be a booger at high miles and the airbags on the rear go out at higher miles too. But what car doesnt need a few things at 200k to get it up to 350k and beyond.
FTN PPG yep, the airbag suspension no bueno. But only becomes a problem around yr 15 of the car
@@pacflip10 I am trading my IS 350 in and wondering what to get. I am all over the map. This made the list though but it always does when I look for new car.
2014 IS 350, 2016 RX 350, 1987 944TURBO, 1970 BMW 2002 S54 swap
Trading IS 350 for 2016 Camaro SS or 2016 Challenger R/T but part of me wants to get a 2013 (pre spindle grill) GX.
Oh Mark Levinson amp is dead too another $800
Do not buy any expensive Toyota or Lexus.
Do it yourself
I had a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum and traded in for 2006 Lexus GX470 which later i traded in for another 2009 Lexus GX470 and never look back. I love it the GX470. Very easy to do DIY maintenance, spark plug fairly easy to change, oil change is a breeze, driver shaft easy to lubricate, transfer case and differential oil easy to change as well. Fantastic truck!
Orly Lens
Any tachometer issues? Mine went out today, for no apparent reason... Thanks
Nice vid man. I think really you found the limit of those all season tires, and not the Lexus.
Agreed
Absolutely right this is my third one in row that i
own GX series, overpass 22 years wonderful strong SUV!!
Oh look I just purchased a 2004 GX470. It's nice the parts are compatible with the Tacoma and 4Runner.
Evan Valek any problems with your GX thus far? I'm in the market for one. Are there any issues to look out for?
@@crazyone1067 minor issues with age. I ha and a cracked manifold, my radio had an issue which allowed me to install a backup camera and new Kenwood display, and the headlights. Other than that, some weather stripping needs replacing however mine is 16 years old and a tank.
Just bought mine. 2006 GX470 and I love it!!
Thanks for you advice, am getting one as soon I live Korea and back to Nigeria.
The audio and picture seems like 2004 technology as well!
Always great content of course.
I just got my Lexus GX just a little over 100k used but so far good😊
Yohena Trejo that’s suppppper low
I just purchased a 2004 Lexus GX470 with 125,000 miles on it. It has been serviced at the Lexus dealer so the CarFax showed lots of service history. The only issue have discovered is the fuel gauge is intermittent . I didn't see this video until after I purchased the GX. Thanks for the "COOL" and encouraging video. I have an 02 LS430 that we love so the GX was a no-brainer I can't believe that the rear door jam still had the protective covering on it. I'll bet the original owner has plastic on their furniture like on "Everybody Loves Raymond". :)
Those still look amazing, in fact better then new
The GX470 is a great platform! Everyday more and more companies are making aftermarket parts for it to make it that much more capable on and offroad. Great Video!
In Africa it is the landcruiser prado turbo diesel...
Turbo diesel!!
I must
Just came across the video. I have the exact one. It was gifted to me by most generous brother and his wife when they replaced it in 2011 with an Audi wagon. Needless to say I think I got the better part of the deal. They mourn the loss!! I love my car and it’s every bit as good as you said. It’s just shy of 200k miles
Why does the GPS think you're in a lake?
Thanks car angel. This is the best ad for the car that lexus never even did. There are next to no commercials for this car. Only a few, mostly when it was first introduced is all i can find on youtube. I just got a white one, highway mileage, all records and convinced dealer down from 12900 to 7999 by it being ignored on lot and overplaying its maintenance which dealer didnt eralize was all available on lexus website. Its lack of public keenness makes it a great way to get a great deal. Id never get a deal like taht on closest v8 4runner of same year. 😁👍i folllowed this video to a t it seems lol
The rebadged Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Gotta love it.
This car is smooth as hell. I was driving my cousin one in Dubai not log ago, it felt like I was doing 60 when I was actually doing 120
Still in love with the look and reliability of my 08 GX470 after 9 years of owning it! I paid $52K for it in 2008. Only 63K miles. Gas was $5/gallon in 2008 but the price has been much lower in recent years which is a huge bonus us, GX470 owners.
Now that we have Biden as President we can look forward to even higher gas prices!
Was the air ride system ever been serviced? That is amazing most air system fail soon after the warranty expires
My mom had a GX470 and at 150,000 our air suspension was still working perfectly, we got rid of the car because of the mileage and she got an RX instead
210k and air suspension still works perfectly.
We bought a 2006 GX470 in April last year with 150000 miles on it. Airbags and air shocks had been replaced a few times already. The suspension is not working properly all of the time. Thinking about doing a conversion back to basics. Love it though. Love the V8 power.
125k and zero problems

I recently got a 2004 4Runner (Prado to all you out of the US) with 182,000 miles on it. It drives like it's brand new. Not a rattle or a squeak anywhere. And it's not like the previous owner was super gentle either. My buddy from OZ remarked "Nice mate. She's just broke in and ready for the dirty stuff". He's not kidding. Despite some issues of cleanliness from the previous owner you'd think it was brand new.
That is amazing.
Known issues:
Air suspension failure/buggy
Drive shaft binding at stop
Dash board crack (hopefully you were lucky to get the new one from lexus)
Blizzard Pearl white paint peeling!
These are very true comments!
@@jrm163 also have to add torque converter "shake" to list.
Any chance your selling this one? The condition is so amazing that I had to ask
Right!? I would absolutely buy this. What an excellent review!
I own a 2008 GX470 and a 2004 LS430. Best of both worlds in their own ways. Lovely vehicles. Bravo Toyota for giving these two legendary vehicles to the world.
